Just spotted this on the N800 OS download site:

I didn't see this on ITT yet, so thought I would point it out!

-----------------

RX-34_2008SE_1.2007.44-4_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin

Software Edition 2008 version 4.2007.44-4 for Nokia N800

Did you flash through the linux flasher? or use the windows update utility?

EIPI

I have not done it myself yet since I am away from my house. I would think that the Windows utility would work since this is an officially released OS for the N800.

Anyone upgraded using this firmware yet? If so, please provide some feedback on the update process, and impressions versus the leaked N810 OS.

ShyBoy

yes, you are right, but I also noticed that the windows update utility on nokia's website
http://europe.nokia.com/A4305010
it has different size of the file which I use to have for the update utility that I downloaded couple of months ago.

So I guess that this is the update utility as well in addition to the OS2008.

Aw heck, it doesn't really matter...I'm going to try it anyway. :)

Ok...
At the end of the flash, I got this:

100% (128256 of 128256 kB, avg. 5770 kB/s)
Finishing flashing... done
Sending request 0x43 failed!

Bootloader error log follows:
Error reading spare of block 247, page 0
Error reading spare of block 247, page 0
EP0 in RX state, but no incoming packet
Premature end of control transfer

But after repowering it It booted up into OS2008. Everything seems wonderful so far (in the 30s of testing i've given it) except in the "About Product" it still claims that Im using OS2007 Ver: 4.2007.38-2

Weird! Anyone have any ideas what went wrong?

I've got the feeling, that the screen responsiveness is now similar to the old ITOS2007.

Nope, nothing explodes (takes helmet made from armadillo off)...

Back-up went well but what it really needs is a "No to all" button when it asks if you want to replace existing files with newer versions. Without it you have to answer the pop-up for every bookmark or favorite that you changed in your old set-up.

...oh and full map services are still expected in December and are not yet available.

Pretty cool, has anyine tried playing the downloaded file (RX-34_2008SE_1.2007.44-4_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin) with the VLC media player? I did by accident, I guess there's a new song bundled with the OS? Funny..

"The OS2008 final release for the N800 is expected to come on mid December. It will include several improvements based on N800 specific testing and the earliest feedback received from the usage of the N810 in real circumstances."

os08 for 800 was to be with the release of the n810, then a week later than it, then december, now mid december.

better get the beta i guess.

the software side of he NITs really does seem to let the whole thing down release/timing wise.

Anyone know when skype will be available for it? like quite a few 800 users, it's a big part of the use and appeal of the device for me now.

(...) and impressions versus the leaked N810 OS.

What you (and others) call "leaked" is in fact an official N810 image clever people found out how to install contra natura in the N800. What Nokia has released today is an official beta with all the ingredients developers need to make proper Chinook releases and test them in a real, supported combination.

For me the choice is clear.

Nokia has decided to release a beta version of OS2008 for the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. This release intends to help developers port and test their applications' performance and readiness for OS2008. The Navkit is for the OS2008 beta is disabled however. The release version of OS2008 should be available by mid-December. The lucky 500 contributors who received their Nokia N810 discount codes should be able to use them by December 15. Download the OS2008 beta firmware. Read Maemo.org's announcement.Read the full article. (http://www.internettablettalk.com/2007/11/26/nokia-releses-os2008-beta-for-the-nokia-n800-internet-tablet/)

You need the latest OS 2008 firmware. I have RX-44_2008SE_1.2007.42-18_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin and I need RX-44_2008SE_1.2007.42-19_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin to install Skype. At least that's what the installer told me.

Are you sure wlan is working under OS2007 in your setup? Last time I tried, it didn't because of firmware incompatibility between the OS2007 and OS2008 kernels, which is why I went back to OS2007.

Moreover, Eero Tamminen just stated on the mailing list that:

It doesn't have additional features. It's just had more testing,
especially on N800 and many bugs are fixed (as reads in the
announcement).

when asked:

Any chance you can outline the differences between N800 and N810 software releases? IE USB host mode BT etc etc.

anidel
2007-11-26, 17:03
What I don't like so far is that the two devices, are already starting to be different software-wise.
Skype won't install on the N800 with OS2008 and, from what I read in the Eero's statement, it has more bug fixes than Os2008 on the N810:

The N810 one is the 42-18, while the N800 one is 44-4.

I think it's just because we are in the early phases of the born of the OS2008.
And the two versions will be in more sync as the N810 will be definitely available worldwide.

Let's see.

can someone help?

When you first install SSH (server) it creates a new private key for the server. So if this is a new (2nd) install of SSH for some reason, then you can just follow the instructions and delete the first line (line 1)in /home/user/.ssh/known_hosts.

But really you probably don't need to be ssh'ing to the root account on localhost? If you just want to become root, the the "becomeroot" package is probably what you're after and works on OS2008. (Which is the only thing relevant to this thread :D)

This is a standard SSH message warning you that the computer you're connecting to is different to the last time you connected. Since you're connecting to your N800 that's to be expected since you just flashed new firmware into it.

Just delete the known_hosts file and all will be well.

Then run "passwd" as root and change your root password. It's a bit insecure having "rootme" as the password.

Beta OS2008, restored backup files, skype asks for N810 hardware.

No sirius radio either for that matter. Correct credentials but web browser says otherwise. And yes I did try various suggestions from this post (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12237) regarding mozilla and passwords.

Since openssh was added to the extras repository you can now install openssh (or openssh-server) without needing root by using Application Manager (just enable the extras repository), then you can ssh into your device as root using the rootme password - that should (and does) work. Installing becomeroot (or enabling R&D mode) just makes life easier in general... but none of this is OS2008 specific! :)

What you (and others) call "leaked" is in fact an official N810 image clever people found out how to install contra natura in the N800. I think I might have found something...

I am ssh'd into my N800/OS08 and was manually doing apt-get update (faster, IMHO) and noticed some libraries being held back:

libsofia-sip-ua-glib3
libsofia-sip-ua

Hmmm. Now, up until now, I had been one of the ones unable to install Skype. Anyway, I typed 'apt-get install libsofia-sip-ua-glib3 libsofia-sip-ua' and a warning appeard that the file 'osso-software-version' would be removed. I aborted the install, then ran a 'dpkg -l|grep osso-software-version. Here is the description:

Nokia-N800-44-4:~# dpkg -l|grep osso-software-version
ii osso-software-version 1.2007.44-4 Placeholder to support lock-down

Hmmm. So, I reran the install, allowed osso-software-version to be removed. Then, on a whim, I did an apt-get install of skype, and it worked!

Nokia-N800-44-4:~# apt-get install skype

My N800 running OS2008/N800(-18) gives

BogoMIPS : 320.37

So it appears my device boots with a 320Mhz clock but otherwise scales quite nicely once booted. I guess your device scaled up to 400Mhz when booting OS2008/N810 (on N800) thus giving you a higher Bogomip figure, and your device doesn't need to scale when booting OS2008/N800 (installed software difference, maybe?)

Cheers thanks for the help,

So far my only issues with OS2008 is:

Xchat (much better than the other integrated IRC clients, I used Skyhuskers on bora, I have tried doing a standard compile on Chinook SDK and could compile Xchat but it doesn't run correctly and the buttons are too close together and can't connect to an IRC server)

Maemo Mapper is a must for me as well, and I can't seem to get it to work on OS2008

Repositorys don't seem to be compleatly up to date yet ( I couldn't install pidgin till I added a repository for mistral from maemo hackers, I also have a massive distaste with installing repository's for a different distro onto another distro, just comes across as messy house keeping)

No FM tuner (but I would imagine it would be in OS2008 final for N800

Samba browsing doesn't seem to allow me to add in a password for a found samba server and displays a blank folder.

BUT..

most of my issues are 3rd party related and it isn't fair to lay these onto the N800 OS2008 beta, for what its designed to do browsing the web email and all that kinda stuff out of the box its fine.

All that said, I love my n800 and the OS's and wouldn't be here if I didn't!

thanks to all the devs working on the N8XX OS's makes me love it even more.

Did you ever try to configure an MSN (or whatever) transport over the standard chat client? Works great for me :)

My N800 refused to unlock for the first time last night. It's only happened once so far, but it didn't happen to me with the leaked N810-18 firmware that I used for a while.

Has anyone else had that happen?

One thing I have found with the skype issue is that if I flash the new n800 os2008 beta by unpacking and flashing the zimage, inifs and rootfs on linux with flasher3 seperatly (as per hacked 810 os2008 firmware install) then skype will install without issue.

If I just do a straight flash using the bin package then skype complains and says I need a newer 810 firmware.

Previously I have had the 810 os2008 firmware flashed onto my device.

I've noticed during an R&D boot with the info displayed that it reports initfs RX-44
I can't remember what it said before but shouldn't it be RX-34 not RX-44 if mine is an N800...?

Any ideas?

Just a quick thought but I might try flashing back to an original os2007 and then go up to 0s2008 beta to see if that changes anything when I get home later

Greetings:

I installed the 2008OS and here are the following problems:

Skype does not install
Also I find that the actual viewing screen is smaller.

I hope the developers will begin to add their programs in the repository.

All,

I have the problem that my OS2008 on the N800 does not finish booting when I have my internal card with my OS2007 clone inserted. I can use the bootmenu fine and boot into the 'old' OS. But when I choose to boot the 'new' OS from the flash it always reaches the point that the blue bar at the bottom of the screen is all the way to the end and then nothing happens. I have to remove battery to be able to reboot.

If I remove the internal card everything works fine.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I really like this new os and haven't found a reason to go back to os2007 yet. My browser hasn't crashed yet and very stable. The only thing that has crashed was the app manager when installing pidgin. The lack of apps is the only reason I would go back but at this point the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

BTW, Rhapsody is awesome. It hasn't crashed yet and the os2008 version has a few more added features like the applet, the album and artist page.

I have found a way to make Skype work, but it's a little tedious if you don't have OpenSSH or Dropbear SSH installed. You'll need to do this as root, either by using ssh root@(your n800 IP) or sudo gainroot from the X-term application (Only works you are in R&D mode). I did an apt-get skype; this will download the deb package to /var/cache/apt/archives (and produce the standard error). You can then install it manually using dpkg:
dpkg -X /var/cache/apt/archives/skype_1.7.62.48.2_armel.deb /

This will extract it to the root directory without running the flawed setup script. Once you do that the Skype application listed under "My Selection" will work. I'm not sure what the setup scripts do but they don't seem to be essential and the next time you install something else they'll run (automatically) without any errors.

Good luck!

I reflashed to the OS2008 for N800 which came out yesterday. But again I still have this behaviour. With card I can boot OS2007 from card and booting from flash hangs without card I can boot from flash.

Strange. Well, maybe the official OS2008 will not have this problem :(

I can confirm problems with soft poweroff: With 2007, I had it set for the long power button keypress. When I did that, the screen would blank, come back on, then go off until I pressed the power button again.

Now: Same settings as above, long press give the blank, come back on. Now the power button is totally unresponsive.

Is this the problem you are having?

388.54 BogoMIPS here (N800 w/fresh 2008 install)

770:
4.2007.26-8 (2007He) 2G kingston MMC boot (no plus): 125.76
same for flash boot.

388.54/125.76 = 3.09; approx clocked 3X faster when compare to the 'classic', the 770.

Does anyone know how to "force" a refresh of the Application Manager? Mine says it was last refreshed on 11/26/2007 and that there are no updates. When I hit the update button, it doesn't do anything. This was not an issue for me in OS2007.

Yeah I guess things could be named a little clearer.

The "Check for updates" button checks the catalogue for updates to packages already installed.

And the "refresh application list" is what updates the catalogue.

the "disable BT" option in the drop-down menu from the BT icon disappered, now you just have the "BT properties" entry, that you have to tap, then on the window that'll appear, you can check or uncheck the activation checkbox...

About the bluetooth icon.
I think it's real meaning is NOT to tell you that bluetooth is on or off.
It is there to tell you if you are communicating with a device or not.
That's because the power management policies of the tablet will turn if off for you when it has not been used for a while.
The former behavior was inconsistent with this, and they made it now consistent.

I don't turn the bluetooth off an I don't leave it "reachable", in this way I am sure it won't drain my battery when it is not in use.
Or at least the impact is very low.

I like the way it behaves now.

Just after I installed the OS2008 beta I was having problems with the web browser crashing when I went to maemo.org/downloads or other websites. Skype also wouldn't install.

Today, I decided to flash a second time and this time NOT TO restore backups. Now, everything is working great with the web browser and Skype installed first time. I'm not sure if the Skype is because as someone mentioned with them updating the application list or not. Either way, I'd recommend just starting fresh and not restoring everything that you had previousely. :D

No, soft poweroff is now entirely functionless other than to disable the power menu. Screen blanks and then can be instantly and easily reactivated by simply tapping the touchscreen or pressing a key.

If anybody else is having major trouble with the soft poweroff feature, please vote and comment on the issue over here (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2400).

I was very reluctant to install the new "beta" software but I figured how bad can it be ? Will I not be able to view my favorite web pages ? uncheck already couldn't view many of my fav pages(incl. ITT), better overall speed and possibly better battery life, check, and possibly a few proggy's not yet pkgd for OS2008, I'll take my chances..

So I think I've cut my random browser crashes by about 80% so far from 07 to 08 and I may have to wait for a few more of my fav programs to come out but it's well worth it to me.

Even though they called this release a beta I almost wonder if our 2nd to last 07 update wasn't a "beta release" as well, since the update to that update was pretty fast..

And I as many others am having some issues with recompiled apps, Skype included (for which I finally got it to install this eve, no idea how just kept refreshing app manger and also going to the ever useful repo list (http://www.gronmayer.com/it/index.php?lang=en) and after a couple more times it finally installed, I did NOT have to use X-term or become root etc., I just installed from the avail pkg in App Mgr)

I now know though why so many people were running the hacked version of OS2008 though, seems like they've really improved many aspects with the IT and streamlined many functions.

Now if only I could get my tablet's bluetooth to play nice with my new DUO..

About the bluetooth icon.
I think it's real meaning is NOT to tell you that bluetooth is on or off.
It is there to tell you if you are communicating with a device or not.

But that can also be achieved by leaving the icon persistent yet changing its state.

Bottom line, it should be the user's choice what is persistent in that bar and what is not.

So I just upgraded my newly bought n800 last night and then I downgraded this morning. The thumbboard is driving me nuts. It doesn't input passwords properly, and it double types everything in xTerm.

MicroB also needs a non-hack way to configure the dpad. I do not want to page up and down via the scroll bar and stylus/fingernail.

Just upgraded to OS2008 Beta, my comments:

OS2008 seems faster than OS2007.

"Listen Now" on Sirius.com still does not work ; can log in but no music is played.
Maybe an Add-on for Mozilla is needed?

Media Streamer is not compatible with OS2008.

How can the font size be increased?
Font way too small for me. If I zoom a web site page size, it distorts the view(page not displayed correctly).
I tried using Midnight Commander, browsed to /.mozilla/microb/prefs.js and saw nothing mentioning font size.
