Hey guys,

I'm anxious to get 2008 OS on my N800. I see that the binaries are available, but the loader doesn't seem to be available for Windows. Is there any other way to get the new software on there (SD card, maybe?) or do I have to suck it up and go use a linux box?

Also, is the available binaries the actually 2008 OS (aka, non-beta, real thing available on the N810?)

Thanks for your help!

Not sure where you were looking, but a Windows firmware loader is available and works with Vista now:

If you're looking at the Nokia site for the OS2008 firmware for the N800 you'll see it's marked as "beta". The official release will be here in a week or so.

When I ran the NIT Software Update Wizard on XP, it upgraded itself to a new version and then I was able to flash my N800 to OS2008.

And I used the OS2008 beta as the final is not out yet.

Download the beta of OS2008 for the N800 to your Windows computer.
Install and run the Nokia Internet Tablet Software Update Wizard on your Windows machine. Allow it to update itself if it feels so inclined.
Follow the instructions the Nokia Internet Tablet Software Update Wizard (NITSUW?) gives for connecting your N800, pressing buttons, etc. (Note: The wizard may suggest holding the "switch" button. You may need to hold the "home" button instead.)
When the wizard says it's ready to update your N800 to "2007SE_4.2007.38-2 (latest)", don't click "Next". Instead, click the "Change" button.
Browse to and choose the OS2008 beta binary you downloaded.
Finish running the wizard.

Ah, thanks guys. For some reason I thought it was only compatible with the Linux loader. Fired it on there with the Windows utility and it worked great.

Google Reader seems quite a bit faster.

Your confusion is understandable. OS2008 on the N800 started with people shoehorning the N810's OS into the N800. That took a Linux flasher as Nokia hadn't intended for people to do it. However, from there discussions of OS2008 in these forums blended smoothly into talk of the OS2008 beta for the N800.

Since the OS2008 beta for the N800 is an official release, it doesn't require a Linux flasher, standing on one foot, or sacrificial chickens. (Though there are those who still prefer them.) If you missed a thread or two though, you missed that discussion. Easy enough to do. And, as there's a mix of folks using the beta and folks still using the N810's shoehorned OS, it's often unclear precisely what OS2008 a N800-owning poster is using.

Anyway, have fun with your new OS, and may Nokia not frustrate you by releasing the OS2008 final version two minutes after you finish reinstalling all your applications.
