Video format .mp4 or avi?

the sample video clip shows .avi format, but when I try to convert a dvd movie using slysoft software, it convert into mp4 format and when I try to play it, it shows format not support? which correct format should i use to convert to watch a movie?

.mp4 implies AAC audio, which will not be decoded by the DSP. You want .avi with mpeg4 video and mp3 audio.

FWIW the slysoft software that creates the mp4 video does run if you use MPlayer instead of the default media player.
