View Full Version : Holux M1000 (and likely M1200) can do 5HZ!

It turns out M1000 supports 5HZ. I changed the rate with the MiniGPS utility, linked from this thread

Works great. I see a different position every 200ms.

Does it work with maemo mapper?

Haven't tried maemo mapper @5HZ, but don't see why it wouldn't work.

What specific use do you have for sampling at that data rate? I could see how it would capture acceleration data and perhaps turns a bit quicker, but don't really see much use for the average user. I expect sampling at a higher rate increases battery draw, too.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. :p More accurate tracks may not assist in navigation, but they're certainly more useful after-the-fact. My friends and I go nocturnal canoeing about twice a month, and I have .kmls of all the trips saved in Google Earth.

Checked maemo mapper, and it works great. Very smooth motion at 5HZ.

You must go speed canoeing. I mean, how far can you get in a canoe in a second, really? :)

The big difference is when turning (heading). For example, Google earth seems animated in turning when I'm going around a cloverleaf in my car. If your map is constantly oriented north, it is probably less important, but if you are using a map facing "ahead", the difference is considerable.

And for telemetry. (at evdoinfo.com/3gstore.com I did the mod to add gpsd to a KR1 router and it includes the data stream from my motorcycle - having more points really helps there too).

BTW - does the GPS set the clock on the Nokia?

Most Globaltops do 5hz "out of the box" including the ultraslim and the HUD version - and are priced close to the Holux, and use the 51 channel chipset (which maybe isn't better than 32).

buygpsnow also carries holux and has a free shipping special on the m1200

Very interesting :)

Can anyone confirm that the M1200 can do 5Hz? I just made use of said shipping special.

You might need to send it a command to enable 5hz, but the chipset itself is capable of 5Hz operation. (and as long as you don't lose the battery it should stay at 5hz).

You might also be able to save the options. I think it is the PMTK300 command that sets the rate (200 in milliseconds).

A collection of data someone put together is at:

Sorry for the bump but I am in the position where I can get one of these with my N800. I was wondering what the deal with the 5HZ is?

5Hz (instead of the default 1Hz) will update your location 5 times a second instead of once per second. That may or may not be useful to you, depending on what you need and what application you use. However, 5 Hz will spend the GPS battery somewhat faster.

Oh, is there anyway to switch it to 1hz? I can see it useful for maybe in the city but road trips...no.

heh heh heh... nocturnal speed canoeing. :p

You could use the nokia as a head light and camera.

So my brother has been looking into using a GPS unit to do logging of his car racing. It turns out that 5 hz updates are very important for racing. I tried the hack in the OP with my Holux M1000, and I can confirm that it still works with Maemo Mapper post-hack.

Thanks!

Just a note; from what I've read, increasing the update speed reduces the battery life of the GPS unit by about 40%...

At http://nitapps.com/ you can get gps-clockd which will set the clock and provide a log with time to lock. http://FragosTech.com/MaemoMapper has more information on this subject.

ux, and use the 51 channel chipset (which maybe isn't better than 32).

Considering there are only 31 GPS sats up currently, and you likely can't see more than 12 at any given moment, and considering there are only 17 Russian GLONASS birds left flying around, and if you could track them you would likely only see 3 or 4, and if this receiver also could do Galileo that is 30 more birds total (when they get launched), 12 at any given time if you are lucky, I think 32 channels is more than enough,

You seem to have a good handle on this subject. Just curious. Do these sets of sattilites all use the same radio frequencies and protocols?

Hi, I'm with the same idea in your brother.
I want to include a GPS in a racing car.
Here in Argentina it buy the Holux M 1000 C, but not if it's possible to get this GPS 5Hz, could it?
Please can you tell if it's possible?
and if possible, as they did?
Thanks!
