Hey people, I've been wanting a Nokia N8*0 for a while now and I finally have some cash and I'm not sure what to do,

Basically, I really want an N810 but I'm concerned that the fact it only has one miniSD slot could be a problem, especially considering they only seem to go up to 4GB and those seem to be rare, the 2GB ones seem more common.

Anyone any opinions on this? Know where to get bigger miniSD cards?

Dude... it takes SDHC Cards, why would you limit it to miniSD cards? perhaps you didn't know? (research?)
Specs on Nokia's website (http://europe.nokia.com/A4305063)

MiniSD is the physical size (form factor) of SD card that fits in the N810. SDHC is a technical change to SD cards that allow for storage sizes larger than 2GB.

You can not fit a standard sized SD card in an N810. MiniSD or MicroSD in a MiniSD adapter are the only physical size that fit.

Per Nokia's website on the N810 (http://europe.nokia.com/A4568593) "Supports cards up to 8GB. (SD cards over 2GB must be SDHC compatible.)"

miniSD and microSD are too SD cards.

Full size SD cards really don't fit into the n810

My bad... I took that info on Nokia's site too literally...

Dude, dude.
It's like, y'know?
Dude?

Ahem.

Anyway, I got a 4GB Kingston Class 4 miniSDHC for my N810.
They seem very happy with each other.
Monday I'll have a couple of these wicked cheap 4GB Class 6 Patriots from NewEgg, $25 delivered.

I will duly report back.

Bigger cards will come. Give it a few months.

There's also the option of the micro cards,
but some people have had trouble with the adapters.

FWIW, the 810 also has 2G internal storage, so the specs say. With a 2G miniSD card & the 2G internal, you have as much as the 800.

Thanks for the pointer to the Newegg cards ... they are out of stock, but I'll order some when they are back. ;-)

But the N800 can hold two 8GB cards, i.e. 16gb compared to the N810 which right now seems to only have 2GB internal plus 4GB (maximum) of MicroSD so 6GB.

I know it shouldn't be that big a deal but MiniSD has been out since 2003 and it doesn't look like there's much interest in it, so I'm not so sure anyone will really want to bring out bigger cards for it. I could be mistaken, but I think I may well go for the N800 just because of this. Or maybe wait for an N900 if anyone has any insider info on such a thing? ;)

There are several people on this forum using N810s with 8GB microSD(HC) cards (with micro-mini adapter) with great results. The adapters can be a problem, but I'd suggest you do a search to find out the specifics.

SanDisk has announced 12GB and 16GB microSD(HC) cards are coming in the next few months, so storage shouldn't be a huge issue on either N800 or N810. And don't forget about that other storage device, "the internet". :)

Best thing for both devices is that to add storage, you just add another card. SD/mini/micro cards are all tiny, so it's easy to carry more than one.

Dunno if they'll work, yet. They've gotta be cheap for a reason.
I'll guinea pig and let y'all know. Here's hoping.

But the N800 can hold two 8GB cards

Lots of people here using them with 2 16 meg cards.
But just give it time, all the cards will get bigger.
AFAIK, SDHC is SDHC.
We'll be able to read 128 gig cards,
provided they fit in the slot.
