Won't a self-powered USB hub do the job? Maybe not as portable, but if I'm using a USB keyboard, I won't be lugging it around the country . . .

Hmm, maybe something like this:

CYBERPOWER (CP-H420MP) BATTERY POWERED 4 PORT HUB

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/pcsound/cph420mp.html

would work as well. It's more expensive though...

Yes, a self-powered USB hub will also do nicely.

But will the Nokia 770 support a hub?

Does the device work in USB host mode?

The device itself works by default in client mode. However, by for example reflashing the device with --enable-usb-host-mode parameter in the flasher program, it can be set to function partially in the usb host mode. It however does not work without a powered usb hub and additional cables in between since the 770 can not supply power to through the usb connector. The flasher program can also set the device to usb host mode without reflashing retaining the original rootimage, try this: connect the device with usb cable and command flasher just
$ ./flasher --enable-rd-mode --enable-usb-host-mode
source : http://maemo.org/maemowiki/FrequentlyAskedQuestions#head-54a3382efe81c6eb28ffd3e11f6f856b3c74595f

it say usb host work but it don't supply power for your device.
There is no problem with an alimented hub i think, just use the flasher command to use usb host

$2-3 to build? Yeah, right. You left out the $$$$ for the EE degree people need to understand that schematic!

Back to talking about battery-powered hubs...

Can this be used to connect a usb flash drive?

How about using the nokia charger (supplies 5.7 V) as the power source. It might be a tempting alternative. Anyway, whenevery you are near a usb keyboard, power can't be that far away. Although for using it as a card reader, 9v battery is much saner choice.

Also, a splitter could be made so that you can connect the charger to 770 at the same time as it's powering the usb.

In the schematic above an important point has been left out:
GND must be connected to the 770 as well...
As I said in another post, in the event that the usb port on the 770 doesn't provide +5v (wich i find hard to believe...), and if the battery inside the 770 has 5v, or close to that, it "might" be possible to connect a plug to the 770's power input, and leech the 5v from the battery...
anyway...
the best thing is to use a mini usb hub with an external power supply...
(these are very cheap... I bought 4 port usb2.0 mini-hub for 7eur...)

batteries are't a good idea.. because if they fail while you're recordind into a usb pen drive, you will most likelly loose that data.. as well as everything else on the pen...

I was wondering. Does any device that is already powered say an ipod or any mp3 player that can be used as a portable hd be used without any hack for power? In other words, just plug it in with the right type of cable and voila assuming you have tho port changed to usb host?
BTW, I can't wait to order mine and devlop something for it.

Hello!

Please, has anyone tried the CP-H420MP with the nokia 770?

Thank you very much.

Good point!

I am going to buy an A female A female usb adapter to try your idea.

I will do the connection as follows:

Nokia 770 - nokia 770 usb cable - A female A female usb adaptor - mp3player

Do you think that it may work?

Thank you very much.

it might if ...
1/ you have put your 770 in USB Host Mode
2/ you can mount a USB Mass Storage File System

Someone needs to do a little app for those of us who are not Linux experts that will switch the 770 between host/unhost mode so we can use this USB stuff.

I have an RCA Lyra 40GB MP3 player that is recognized as an external HDD. I don't know how an IPod works, but my Lyra tries to charge from the host device by default. Once put into file Xfer mode however, I believe it still tries to sap power. Is there a way to put the 770 into host mode without hooping my OS?

I think you will still need the USB power hack, sadly.
I have tried using:
Digital camera
Nokia USB phone
Powered USB hub
Powered USB CD-ROM drive

And none of them were recognized as USB devices. Yes, I had the 770 in host mode. In most cases, it appears that while there may be an external power supply for most of the system, the USB interface chip is still powered by the USB port.

You may get lucky and find a device that works, but chances are you're still going to need a cable and/or internal power hack.

My Nokia charger puts out 5.0V for the N770... My nokia phone charger puts out 5.7 Volts

So has anyone tested this with real hardware? I'm not sure if I am brave enough to be the first. So you have to bring +5V into the 770 USB port even if you want to use it in host mode? Make sense, they designed this thing to be super stingy on power.

David:
I used both of my power hacks to test a digital camera, a keyboard, and an iPod nano. All worked without problems. Here are the links:

Hi!
i have a nokia 770
i tried to connect a usb keyboard @ like this schema

http://img110.imageshack.us/img110/7799/connectionyt7.jpg

it was saying pc connected and i was able to see the holy usb icon :)

then i tried to connect a usb keyboard but i failed after it i searched for it @ web i did see some guys says "u have take u n770 to usb host mode on"

i downloaded the flasher utility
but I get the following error:
'Syntax error: "(" unexpected'
after i searched for it @ web
i have seen that :)
"Flasher has to be run from a separate Linux box!"
but when i do
echo host > /sys/devices/platform/tahvo-usb/otg_mode
n770 doesnt say it has been connected but it's light turns on ,
but it doesnt work too
when i execute "dmesg" cmd from xterm
sometimes i see usb connected ,sometimes no usb host controller, etc
i tried also
echo slave > /sys/devices/platform/tahvo-usb/otg_mode
too
but when i try 2 restart it gets default value to "peripheral"

i have no any linux pc but i have kubuntu 7.0 live cd
so my question is? what is wrong? configuration or the holy flasher && usb host ****?
