Seeing sjgadsby pushing bugzilla, I figured it might be time to give a little shout out to #maemo over on Freenode, maemo's semi-official IRC channel.

There's lots and lots of fun stuff going down there (a lot of stuff that you wont see here on itT), so be sure to check it out!

#maemo on Freenode (irc://irc.freenode.net/#maemo)

Linux

irssi (http://www.irssi.org/)
Konversation (http://konversation.kde.org/)
X-Chat (http://www.xchat.org/)

Mac

Colloquy (http://colloquy.info/)
Linkinus (http://linkinus.com/)
X-Chat Aqua (http://sourceforge.net/projects/xchataqua/)

Pidgin (http://pidgin.garage.maemo.org/)
rtcomm (http://rtcomm.garage.maemo.org)
X-Chat (http://zeus.rm-fr.net/~skyhusker/xchat-chinook-betas/)

Windows

mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/)
X-Chat (http://www.silverex.org/)

On a related note, do you think we could ever convince Reggie to turn off the stupid auto-censoring and turn it into user setting. :\

Pidgin works well on the tablet for IRC, with the proper client installed of course. Are there any other methods to access IRC on the tablets?

There is a port of ВitсhX.

I think there is a version of Xchat that I have used, but don't have installed right now.

There is (I added all the relevant maemo clients to the first post). I actually have a bind for since it gets asked about so much on #maemo (!xchat expands to the URL).

I'm a drama queen. Sorry, I'd had a bit of a bad day at school. Now, today I'm happy because of teachers striking, it means I can stay at home today :p.

I like #maemo. The people are great :), I joined a month or two ago and it's fun :).

But instead of listing clients in alphabetical order, why not do it by features or something?
X-Chat is definitely the best IMHO. Pidgin and *****X a joint second IMHO.

A. I was trying to avoid any client flamewars, and B. I didn't have anything useful to contribute for Linux and Windows client ranking. ;)

But, sure, if you want. X-Chat is definitely the way to go. The other GUI clients on maemo pretty much suck and the console stuff is kind of a pain to use without a full keyboard.

Good reasoning. But people seriously have flamewars over irc clients?

Indeed, Irssi also likes to segfault from time to time too.

Also it may be good to mention that for those who cannot afford hanging on irc all day there is searchable archive here http://mg.pov.lt/maemo-irclog/latest.log.html

btw, Miranda also has IRC plugin, so if you already use it on Windows, why not check it.

I really hate hangin' out on IRC though. Needs too much attention.

That's how it starts!

True :D. Irssi is a good client and works well on desktop linux but all the builds for maemo segfault :)

What thread? ВitсhX thread? Yes, but as you see I have solved that problem for myself.

Ummm.... Yeah.

Which irc program to use is a choice.
Where there is a choice, there is a wrong choice.
Where there is a wrong choice, you will make it.
When you make a wrong choice, I will flame you!

ok, newbie here,

i figured out how to connect to the irc.freenode.net server and register. but i can't connect to the maemo channel or even find it.

what is the way that i can do this on pidgin or even on a desktop?

there are no EXPLICIT LINE BY LINE instructions anywhere that i can see and have looked for an hour or more.

one thing i don't understand stand is whether i type in irc.freenode.net and then add the maemo channel later -- or if I should type in the exact maemo server (which I couldn't figure out)

I tried variations like maemo.freenode.net, irc.freenode.net#maemo and irc.freenode.net/#maemo but no luck

thanks in advance,

repoman

I don't have a link on hand, but Googling "irc tutorial" should give you lots of results. IRC is mostly a command-line style interface. Presuming you're using Pidgin, XChat, or something else that has a GUI for accounts, and you're already connected, just type
/join #channel-name
a '/' at the beginning of a line denotes an IRC command

EDIT: #maemo's a pretty friendly place, but you'll probably want to read up on IRC usage and etiquette before you head out into that area of the Internet, as some people/channels don't take kindly to ignorance, just because they're jerks, and there are plenty of unintentional faux pas that are easy to commit.

Hi everyone :)

I hope that more persons will join the irc #n900 channel at the freenode network. It would be nice to have more going on in there, and nice just to exchange smalltalk and so on about the N900.

So come join us in there! See you.

With this site, #n900 on twitter, and #n900 and #maemo on irc,
you need an N900 to keep up! :)

#maemo is the official channel

Sorry, I didn't notice that there already existed a #maemo channel with a lot of people, my bad. No need for the #n900, I guess.

Thanks for telling me :)

There is some information that might help you on the Wiki here:

http://wiki.maemo.org/N900_filesystem

If you are looking for information about where certain topics are discussed, you could start with Power Search (at the top of the right column on this page). Just search for what you think are the most important words.
