This is also the receiver that I own and with which I do all my testing. Because I don't have the resources to acquire and test every bluetooth GPS receiver out there, I apologize if some receivers have a more difficult time working with Maemo Mapper than the i-Blue.

To help me, if your particular GPS receiver does not work with Maemo Mapper, please include the behaviors (crashes, freezes, etc.) that lead you to that conclusion. Also, if you have tried GPS Drive and your receiver worked with it, then that's another useful piece of information.

And, again, thanks for all the feedback.

WORKS?: yes and no. Maemo mapper crashes if
GPS fix is not got before starting Maemo mapper. However, if the GPS has already GPS fix before starting Maemo mapper, it works. Works fine with GPSDrive and with Nokia 7610 and Navicore (no crashes). The problem is in the Maemo mapper most likely, sounds like it would be using NULL pointer for something, in other words, it is a bug.

Other Comments: Sometimes Maemo Mapper just stops updating the position. I suspect the Bluetooth connection gets wedged. Turning the GPS off and back on, then closing the cover on the Nokia 770 and opening it again causes Maemo Mapper to reconnect to the GPS, and it starts working again.

I also tried gpsdrive on my laptop. It switched the GPS into a different protocol and Maemo Mapper stopped working. I had some fun switching it back into NMEA mode (http://mg.pov.lt/blog/maemo-mapper.html).

I bought this unit for use specifically with the Nokia 770 and gpsdrive. I have been very happy with it. It connected via bluetooth with no problems at all the first time. Best of all, this unit can be bought sans Windows software rather cheaply. I got it back in February for about $120 US at the time. Still around for about $150. Since I didn't buy the software with it, this doesn't work with my Window's laptop, but I can live with that.

After years of stringing cables to tie my Garin Etrex to my Zaurus in my car, this is a dream come true!

This unit has a solar panel built in! While it's not strong enough to stop the battery level from decreasing during use, it does give you much more time in between recharging as long as you keep it in the sun. Also, rather than plug it in to recharge, just leave it out in the sun for a few hours.

I have had bluetooth conflicts sometimes where I can't use my DUN connection on my phone at the same time as gps, but not consistently. So, I don't know if that's a problem with the gps, the nokia, or the software.

I've got one and it works fine. It comes with a USB charger cable and 12V car adapter so you can charge it almost anywhere.

I do have problems with bluetooth dropping out when running maemo-mapper (and GPSdrive), but this is a problem with the 770 driver rather than the GPS. It works perfectly with my centrino laptop running gpsdiag.

The manufacturers webpage is here:

Anyone know if this is going to be fixed in mistral? I still have this problem in the beta and it really makes it unusable. It would be so much more fun to play with if I didn't always get frustrated almost to the point of throw my 770 across the room.

Some have reported that using rfcomm instead of letting Maemo Mapper handle the connection may eliminate the problem. You can specify an rfcomm device (e.g. /dev/rfcomm5) in Maemo Mapper as of v0.2.4 and v1.0, so give it a shot.

For best results, go into root and use rfcomm bind; otherwise, an rfcomm connect is sufficient, but you'll have to do it every time you want to connect to the receiver.

I have never seen a hang in my limited testing with rfcomm-based connection, but then again, I also haven't seen a hang in the hours of continuous without rfcomm in the 2006 OS (I saw the hang a few times in the 2005 OS, but not as much as others have seen it).

This problem has been reported in mistral bugzilla and it is thought to be a problem with the bluetooth firmware. So it will require a fix from the BT chipset manufacturer. Still, there's hope we will get a proper fix.

BRAND: Socket
MODEL: Cordless GPS Receiver (8550-00004E) BT
TYPE: NMEA-0183 (v2.30)
Works ?: somewhat (using rfcomm)
Startup Time (avg): 1m
Personal Rating: 6/10
Other Comments: Works great using gpsd and GpsDrive, but Maemo Mapper cannot reliably establish connection. Looking forward to Maemo Mapper version with gpsd support.

UPDATE: Was able to get connection to GPS by doing:
rfcomm connect /dev/ttyS3 00:0E:6D:6B:37:6F 1
in xterm; which resulted in:
Connected /dev/rfcomm0 to 00:0E:6D:6B:37:6F on channel 1
Press CTRL-C for hangup

then entered /dev/rfcomm0 into Maemo Mapper -Thanks Gnuite!

Unfortunately it doesn't work as well as gpsdrive. I often have to quit and relaunch a few times before it starts to work. Also, In my hilly area, I lose fix for a ffew minutes sometimes. When this happens, I have to go through the whole process again. GpsDrive manages to keep running smoothly using gpsd.

Woops! Did it again... :D

Edit: Seriously, though, I was just trying to help. This isn't epinions.com, it's a message board; and even if it were, I was trying to provide meaningful feedback regarding the Socket GPS Receiver, so that people don't get the impression that Maemo Mapper cannot work with it. If GPSD (which uses rfcomm) works with it, then Maemo Mapper should be able to work with rfcomm-based input. Give it a try, and if it still doesn't work (for some unforeseen reason), then update your post.

Look, lmf, we all understand you are the initiator of this thread and what it is for, but I also believe you should a) be a little more polite about it and b) look a little more closely at whom you're flaming.
After all, gnuite is the creator of the app your thread is all about, so in my book he has every right to offer or ask for information in it, especially if he suspects that something posted here is wrong -- that is not noise, it's actually adding value.

I purchased one of these devices from www.mobilefun.co.uk and it was delivered within 24 hours. the device is instantly recognised by btplugin and maemo-mapper and works really well. Simple & inexpensive GPS option for the 770. Just waiting for flite to be ported to OS2006 so I can use it for car journeys. Other Comments:

The unit came with 2 metal discs with adhesive. It holds onto them very well. Under the battery lid you can see what looks like 2 tiny rare earth magnets.

It has a port for a high gain antenna which it seriously doesn't need (this thing even worked inside my house away from a window!). But if you have a lot of trees like we do in Oregon, it might be a help. Personally I am thinking of getting one so I can place the actual unit in my glove box and only expose the antenna to the direct heat and light of the sun.

Resync time is under a second, I swear. I went into a medium tunnel and it didn't give up until about 1/4 of the way in and resynced the same distance before I left the tunnel.

My unscientific test was that I got 4 days of use before it needed a recharge. I would say I used it 2-3 hours a day. It does come with a car charger. It supports an auto mode where it turns on/off when your car is on/off, if you are using the car adapter

At aroud $90 - 100, this is totally worth it. Side to side comparision it fairs way better than my friend's tomtom or the little garmin that looks like a tomtom.

MODEL: 737 (2nd generation unit)
TYPE: BT GPS
Works ?: Perfect
Startup Time (avg): 40-60 seconds
Personal Rating: 10/10
Other Comments: Very nice. Associates perfectly (just click scan), auto powers off when not in use. Auto powers on when I tell the meamo mapper to connect. It usually gets locks to 6 or 7 sats of 7 or 8 inside my house not particularly near any window, and the window has a big curtain. In the car it works well inside the armrest of my subaru (where I have a power adapter). Comes with a wallwart -> usb and car adapter -> usb. Basically perfect, never had to reset BT.

Not bad for $70 ish and 65-70 grams or so.

At the moment I have 8 of 9 sats and an average signal strength of, er, I guess it doesn't say. Now I'm at 9 of 10.

Usually 10 or 11 of 11 of12 when outside. The tracks I've recorded so far
look pretty clean.

Claims to last for 20-25 hours of use or somewhere around 10 times
that for standby, I've not verified either claim.

TYPE: Not sure. Definitely not Sirf star III, but possibly II.
Works: Yes. No problems whatsoever.
Startup Time (avg): Not slow
Personal rating: 6/10
Other Comments: Would be 8/10 except that it's too easy to accidentally turn it on, and it would've been 10/10 with that fixed + a SiRF Star III chipset. The newer TT Mark II should thus cover this..

I am wondering if a Cell Phone that has GPS location would work for Maemo Mapper if the SPP bluetooth profile was enabled?

I have a Sprint MOTO RAZR 3Vm and enabled the location (GPS) feature. However, the phone is supposed to have a SPP profile (which is missing). Before I go crazy trying to enable the SPP profile - I want to know if it would work?

Thanks

With Nokia N800 and Maemo Mapper installed, had it up and running in seconds.
Price: $54.00 US
Startup Time (avg): faster than the Nokia.
Spec cold 36 sec
Warm 33 sec
hot 1 sec
Accessories Car Cigarette adaper

Mini CD with user guide and Computer Drivers and gps software that uses the USB cable as a serial port.
Personal Rating: 9/10
Other Comments:
Pin 1 and 5 on supplied adapters ground and power for charging only.
Using My Nokia USB cable on the Holux plugged into my PC only charges the unit. XP and Vista does not recognize the device. Looks like I need to buy the optional proprietary cable for $27.00 US. This should have been included in the box, instead of as an option. This will make my laptop GPS aware. The supplied software and the accompanying driver makes the USB port a serial port that the software uses to talk to the receiver. I prefer the Bluetooth and the N800.
I ride horses in valleys and tall timber, so far I have not had any problems finding satellites. Very happy with product, but I do not have big requirements.

F-Tech mini solar. It works on everything I've tried it with, everywhere I've tried it. I've also used a Garmin Legend with a bluetooth adapter from PC-Mobile. That works fine too. I tend to use the F-Tech with my Palm and bring out the Garmin/adapter duo for MM, because I don't really depend on either, but both units work with everything I've tried them with.

I guess this is as good a thread as any to report that the internal GPS receiver on the N810 works with Maemo Mapper. I don't find the accuracy to be all that good, but it's better than nothing.

To use the internal GPS receiver with Maemo Mapper, be sure to use the "Bluetooth" option on the GPS tab of the Settings dialog. You must leave the corresponding text field blank. (Leaving the field blank causes Maemo to search for all GPS-enabled devices, both internal and via Bluetooth.)

Hello - I'm new here, I hope I don't violate too many rules right away...

I have been reading through this thread that has been going for almost two years now. I still can't make up my mind whether to change my GPS receiver and would appreciate your help very much!

My N770 came with the Nokia LD-3W. There's many things I like a lot about it:

- uses the same charger as the N770
- is small and well designed, looks rugged, is most likely rainproof and the one button is quite safe from accidental push
- lasts a whole day, and often more, on battery

I am not impressed with the time that it takes to acquire position, especially when moving, i.e. on the train etc. Also it seems very good in the open field to maintain signal, but when in built-up areas it does drop off sometimes. Now from reading this thread I know not to expect instant acquisition, but again, I often find myself getting impatient with this one. And later in the year I am heading for Japan, a country that has given "built-up" a proper definition :-)

The LD-3W uses the SiRF Star III. Is that still the bees knees, or desperately old tat? Is it worth upgrading to a different receiver?
I like the data logging function of the i-Blue 747 as I don't always want to take the N770 with me when I go for a walk. But the design is not so amazing, especially the button. I could not find any reference to it's size anywhere - how does it compare in size to the LD-3W? How do the Holux receivers compare in size, and can they be charged with the Nokia charger?

Have I missed another worthy alternative? Or should I stick with the LD-3W?

Many thanks!
joe

Hi I have an n800 and a i-blue 747 the 32mb version. I have been trying to connect but no luck. It sees the device under bluetooth but show the device as uncategorized. any help.

OK quick update. It appears I have a v2 of the 747.
Also I got it to work with MaemoMapper and RoadMap by forcing the GPS devices bluetooth in the gps device box.

This is the smallest GPS device that I know about and is advertised as a 66 channel GPS receiver. On the Nokia N800, the QSTARZ device has to be paired with the number 0000.
