For games, I think everyone would appreciate a screenshot if it is available. Some screenshots pictures are on #13,#21 of this thread.
You may have to use "delay shot" in order to do it. I used osso-statusbar-cpu, http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12677: you also have to install osso-screenshot-tool for it to work, just look into your app manager, it should be there already. Another screenshot tool is here, http://tuomas.kulve.fi/blog/2007/01/17/maemo-screen-grabber/.

I think 5 is too short for this purpose, I use 30, change sleep 5 into sleep 30. I use cut and paste to do this step, i.e., just copy this command in your tablet and paste it when open the new command, that save a lot of headache in typo.

Any ideas of what to look at to correct this?

I remember getting an err similar to that but didn't remember the number. Try changing the machine ID... you can always change it back if you need to.

I posted here, thinking the error was the same, apparently it wasn't :)

Worldmate runs correctly, but the standard "evaluation" period is only 24 hours and their system will (understandably) not allow me to reuse the activation code from the copy I run on my Treo. I sucessfully used the wireless network connection to update the weather and exchange rates. The Atomic Time Synch feature reset the GVM clock, and did not change the N810 system time. However, the GVM uses N810 system time after exiting and restarting.

Personal PowerOne calculator runs well. This is an application which is actually easier to use on the GVM versus Treo 680 because it adds use configurable buttons when run in 480 x 320 mode.

FileMan an unimaginatively named file manager from Bits ' Bolts software runs correctly. It can create SFX selfextracting archives and I use this as a method to transfer files from Treo to GVM because the GVM recognizes the SFX as an "installable" application. This is nice because I can install an entire set of files from SD in a single operation, including data files.

Documents to Go runs, but I haven't tested it in depth or tried to use the activation code from my Treo.

Smartlist ToGo is working perfectly now. In the previous version the application worked but you could not see the records. Now you can see everything and edit records perfectly. My grocery list and my cocktail database are back online!!

Palmary Clock is now working as it should. The maps and moon phases work without a hitch.

Contacts5 is also up and running, but this is one of the few apps that worked well in the previous version.

All the other apps I used have been succesfully replaced in my n800, so other than this there are no other critical items that I really need to work in GVM. This has really been a godsend.

Can you sync your SmartList-To-Go on the N800 with the Windows Desktop SmartList-To-Go? I am guessing it can't but I'm really hoping you're going to tell me it can now be done.

People have reported EReader as working for them. My settings only give me 16 MBytes of garnet vm storage. Do I have to increase that amount to install EReader?
I tried installing it last night and it was very sloooowww and didn't work right, so I uninstalled it, then thought maybe my storage settings need to be increased. What storage do those of you who use EReader have set? Or was this a fluke?

Having trouble figuring out how/where to download/install the google maps app. could someone write a quick tutorial, or point me to one? thanks, this, seems like something that could be very useful.

UPDATE:www.google.com/gmm
Make sure you aren't using iphone user agent.

Click on Get Started.
Scroll down
Click on Palm OS
Save .prc file where you can find it
Open GarnetVM
Click install
Find saved .prc file and open it
A new icon will appear: "Install Google Maps"
Launch icon
Click agree/ok a couple of times until it shows a map

At this point I suggest you close and restart GarnetVM, otherwise it might launch the install again, and you will lose any addresses you've entered.
When you re-open Garnet, the icon should now say 'Google Maps' (not 'Install Google Maps...')

Mazera is a little slow on the n800, but its one of the best Palm games I've played. The one issue is the positioning of the d-pad is a little awkward for holding the n800 in portrait mode, but you can also use stylus control as well.

I'm about to check Warfare Incorporated as well, my other favorite Palm game.

Warfare Incorporated is working great too, and since 480x320 is higher than my old Treo's resolution (320x320), it actually plays better as well. Its a little slow, but still playable too.

Several people asked about how to change right "handedness" to Left handedness. You can either use rotate(?) which I have NOT tried myself or use Zlauncher, http://www.versiontracker.com/php/dlpage.php?id=6449&db=palm&pid=41878&kind=&lnk=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.zztechs.com%2Fdownload%2FZLau ncher%2FZL545.zip. This is a REAL link to dl a free eval copy. The others are scams that ask to send $ and subscription, be careful. There is an option to change handedness in preference, just checked the option, very easy.

Mazera and Warfare Incorporated are both sold now by Astraware.

Mazera: http://www.astraware.com/palm/mazera/
Warfare Incorporated: http://www.astraware.com/palm/action/warfare/

There's demos for each there. In fact Astraware does have a lot of good Palm games. Some of the other good ones I've tried (but not on my n800 yet):

Tradewinds: http://www.astraware.com/palm/strategy/tradewinds/
Tradewinds 2: http://www.astraware.com/palm/strategy/tradewinds2/
Westward: http://www.astraware.com/palm/strategy/westward/
Zap 2000/2016: http://www.astraware.com/palm/action/zap2000/
Zuma: http://www.astraware.com/palm/action/zuma/

Again, haven't tried these ones on my n800 yet, they're just great Palm games. Unfortunately none are free, but they do all have demos.

As for screenshots, here's a couple from each.

The last one was too big to upload here, so here's an imageshack link:

I've been able to get the following apps working in the new GVM and launching from direct shortgcuts in KDE:

Unit2Unit (http://www.palmblvd.com/software/files/C2C_U2U_v211.zip) (a handy unit convertor)
MWcalc (http://www.free-palm-soft.com/files/download/pda-palm-os-travel-miscellaneous-molecular-weight-calc-4-6.zip) (a molecular weight calculator)
and WWcalc (a Weight watcher's points calc and tracker)

I've really missed these little tools!

I did manage to get the game Titanic installed also and played for a while, but when I went to open it again, it crashed.

Has anybody tried Legacy or the Quest yet?

Datebook and Pocketquicken install and hotsync normally. Audible Reader, however, insists on being reinstalled on every hotsync, then refuses to look in my internal SD card for books. Player will only download that part of a book that will fit in internal memory. I consider it much easier to convert the Audible file to mp3 with Goldwave, move it to the card, and listen with Media Player.

The other apps that were on my Zire 72 all have much better substitutes that are native to the NIT (Xword, for example, is at least the equal of Crossword Puzzles for Palm OS).

The Quest by Redshift? I was able to get it up and running without the music or sound files installed, 4MB dynamic heap and 'display compatibility' checked. It is a little slower moving around the world than on my TX, but still very useable (as far as I can tell).

The Quest is a bit finicky about dynamic heap i.e. it needs a lot, so increasing it and leaving out the sound is probably necessary (at least until I can figure out how to give it a lot more than 4MB - maybe via the command line).

Ok yeah! Got The Quest running by increasing the heap and checking 'Display Compatibility'.

It looks nice, but it's very slow :( Almost makes it hard to play. I had my TX overclocked and used UMDH for more heap. I think I'll try to hunt down my old Legacy game & maps... That should run better.

I also got ePocrates up & running thanks to Bunason :D Took forever to dl (~40 minutes) but it's working great! I'm very happy to have this app again.

I love my classic games, on the other thread, especially the pingpong stype simple video games, that really remind those days......
The 40 min is UNUSUAL. I got that too for approx 40min but the next one I did on my 770 took only 12 min. It is a hit and miss things, I guess. I do not want users to be scared away because of the long dl time, in fact, the more of a problem is the lack of action for several minutes in the beginning, would made it look like it is not doing a thing.
I still using my Treo as phone, but now I can turn to my NOKIA for epocrates.

I dl the palmOS5 edition of exideas OnScreen Keyboard, http://www.exideas.com/ME/index.html. It runs fine with GVM. And I like that OnScreenkeyboard better then the palm one. It is bigger, easier to poke letters and use 'drag', different drag gives different letters, so with a little bit of memorization, it does make 'poking' letter more efficient.

Their Graffiti version is MessageEaseST1.7 which requires palm extender (Xmaster), and the palmOS5 does NOT support extender. So? Anyway, I am happy with palm's graffiti and my use of the GVM/palm is NOT heavy enough to justify re-learning a new set of graffiti.

Try the exideas keyboard, especially if you are a heavy palm user.
Oh, that is a fully functional shareware with NO expiration day.

And thanks to silvermain for bringing this up, http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?p=194290#post194290, thread #52.

First post!

Managed to get my lovely new 810 running Diablo and GVM thanks to the good folk here.

Apps I managed to install OK that I don't think have been mentioned so far:
Tatyambar (dice simulator/RNG)
Tide Tool
Tarot To Go

Ones that didn't:
Do-In (Acupuncture points ap)
PalMoon (moon phases)

One that almost worked...
Scrabble. The dictionary file would not load into GVM

If not I'll try Crosswords!

You can read all of your Plucker files using FBReader. (http://www.fbreader.org/maemo/)

I have all of my old Plucker books without problems. FBreader even has the added benefit of being able to read .html or text docs without the need for conversion. :D

Yes, I discovered that FBReader could do this, so it basically eliminates the need for plucker. I don't find the interface for FBReader to be that great, but it does work fine. Thanks.

Remember that gvm can't read your internal SD card. Make sure you have made all 64 meg available to gvm applications -- or wait for version 3.0.

I tried to install Epocrates but had a lot of problems. It has a lot of hidden applications and not having their names it was difficult to figure out which ones needed to have the backup attribute turned off. I've found that unless one turns off the backup attribute syncs will fail. Epocrates requires two syncs and I never got the second sync to work. Then all my applications disappeared. I tried to reinstall the applications (and ignore Epocrates for the moment), but still have some major problems. I can install from the SD card, but the backups from the PC don't seem to work right. The sync says it is restoring and backup up many files, but the files don't show up in the GVM when I run the Filez program. I even installed an application through the sync and the sync says it installed it, but the program is not visible in GVM. Then when I do a sync again, it fails with the connection failure that occurs when the backup attribute is not turned off. But there is no such file visibile in Filez. It is as though it is syncing to a different place than the GVM is accessing. Very confusing. I thought I had things working pretty well with the Garnet VM beta 2 and Diablo, but this doesn't appear to be the case. Is my experience unusual? Is there a good solution to this problem?

bunanson
2008-06-30, 14:38
...Is my experience unusual? Is there a good solution to this problem?

My tech know-hows is NOT good enough to explain your problems. I was able to sync via the wifi with no difficulty as long as SD card is NOT involved. My previous subscripton specified I sync'd with desktop and SD storage. Upon installation, it kept on looking for SD storage and crashed. What I did is re-regristered and created a new account that does NOT involve SD storage, it has been since sync over a 100X, via GVM wifi, with no difficulties. Does this help?

bun

dwforslund
2008-06-30, 15:15
I assume you are talking about syncing with Epocrates. I was using my Epocrates account that uses SD storage on my Palm T5. The documentation says that one can change the storage in Epocrates (and on my Palm, it says it is managing it optimally). But the Epocrates sync was complaining about not having SD storage. But the total failure occurred because of the back attribute problem. Do you have to set the backup attributes on all you applications? This is a royal pain and especially for Epocrates.

It appears that the Palm GVM can't restore from the backup folders properly into a fresh instantiation of the GVM. I'm not sure of the resolution of this particular problem (which itself may have nothing to do with Epocrates).

...But the Epocrates sync was complaining about not having SD storage. But the total failure occurred because of the back attribute problem. Do you have to set the backup attributes on all you applications? This is a royal pain and especially for Epocrates. ....

GVMb2 cannot deal with externalSD yet. So an apps that looked for extSD will have problems. No. I do not have to set any backup attributes on epo. It just syncs

I removed the old backups from the backup folder on the PC and did a sync and my memos/contacts etc all showed up fine. I'll try Epocrates again and see if I have any more luck. When I didn't set the attributes before, it failed on each of the epocrates application with connection lost until I set the attributes. I'm wondering why.

I now see a message that my memory is full (when there was more than 20Mbytes remaining) and the the Garnet VM won't start and then all my applications disappear. Perhaps the GVM fails to get memory from the N810 and then fails even though I had allocated more memory up front (and I thought it reserves it).

Regarding the link between backup folder and sync, I have no real understanding, only empirical data. It isn't always very clear what is going on (to me, at least)

I'm finding that occasionally hotsync locks up my tablet completely. It says that it hasn't started on the PC and then no buttons or screen responds at all on the tablet. I have to press the reset to get the machine back. When I try to run the GVM I get the message: "Can't connect to GVM (error 0x30040000)". This then normally results in all my installed applications going away when I restart the Garnet VM. :-(
Are others experiencing this? It is a real problem in the reliable use of the GVM. This is the beta2 release on Diablo.

Hotsync following this "crash" tries to restore the applications, but I get the message that the memory may be full, and when I try to run one of the installed apps, I get a GVM error and the apps disappear again! Another hotsync seems to bring them back ok, but some of the application data is missing.

I redownloaded Epocrates (after getting it to no use a memory card) and installed it as documented by Epocrates. It seemed to install correctly without errors. After the second hotsync to update the Rx data, I tried to launch it from the GVM and got the error: 0x30060207 and all my applications disappeared (again). Some of you seem to have it working, but I don't know how. I'm using a 32Mb memory allocation which seemed to be more than it needs. After another hotsync it seemed to come ok. However, Epocrates crashed in the middle of one its applications and then when I run the GVM, the apps were gone (again). But some resyncing and they all come back (with some lost data).

Anyway it looks like it all works now with some caution.

FWIW, I was able to install ePocrates and do updates correctly by using WiFi to complete the install/update instead of hotsyncing. Mainly this is because I don't hotsync - even with my Palm TX I never hotsynced.

This idea that you can convert Audible files to mp3 with Goldwave is very persistent. I decided to try it. Again. Goldwave does not recognize Audible files.

Lufthansa timetable. The Palm version works much better than the Windows Mobile version, so we get the best deal with GVM.

I think, this works with continental too, the last time I flew. Whoever is flying and using a tablet, go to your airline's website, chances are, they already has a 'customized' palm and works much more smooth than their website. Or whoever is planning a trip. I forgot about this once I am back to my office. Thanks TA-t3.

Another nice thing with running GVM is that it's easy to get the updated timetable data (updated once a month), by running a 'wget' command on the tablet itself. Say that you have a directory somewhere (on the tablet or a card) where you keep your pdb files. cd there and run 'wget -N http://www.lhtimetable.com/GWlhEN.pdb' (obviously you need wget installed). The command will (when re-run) only download a newer version if there is a newer version. The time of the file (ls -l GWlhEN.pdb) will reflect the actual update time of the file, not the download time (due to the -N option).

You can also check the time (without downloading) with 'curl -I http://www.lhtimetable.com/GWlhEN.pdb'
(which I did just now and I see there's a new version from 01 July there, which is newer than the one I used for my screenshot)

Finally, the direct link to the application is http://www.lhtimetable.com/LufthansaEN4.prc, get it with wget (or wget -N, or check its time with curl -I. Last updated 06 Oct 2003 when I just checked now).

No browser or PC needed :)

The Astraware game Big Box of Blox (http://www.astraware.com/palm/puzzle/bigboxofblox/?skucode=0064-000-0431) is free until the end of July. I just tested it and it works great on Garnet VM in fullscreen portrait mode.

Whoops! I just checked again and apparently you only get the game free if you belong to their Club Astraware (http://www.astraware.com/club/)....which I do. I guess that's why I saw the game free on their site and you didn't. However being a member of Club Astraware is free and takes just a minute to set up. "This idea that you can convert Audible files to mp3 with Goldwave is very persistent. I decided to try it. Again. Goldwave does not recognize Audible files."

It is persistent because my understanding is that Goldwave did recognize Audible files at one time, but the latest version doesn't. Like you, I never got it working.

I have the data files on the external SD card, in the structure required by Astromist and have enabled access to the card using ~/.gvm/cards files. Astromist requires that the files be placed in the root directory of the SD card which I'm presuming is the /media/mmc1/PALM directory in this context?

Thanks

These are some of the essential Palm apps on 2008OS running GVM beta II, 1.0.1b_ITOS2008. They all run well reportedly. How about yours?

Edit: Now this includes N900, gvm beta5

Please input links, if you find a good link for free dl (or purchase), thanks

Just installed GarnetVM on my N900 per another thread....works OK....saw this thread about apps and so posting here as early poster mentioned eReader app, which I installed...

The eReader app opens up OK, but doesn't see any of my books that I copied over to my N900. Also, when I use the Open command from the menu, it doesn't give me a way to navigate to the folder where the book files are kept. So, I'm wondering if eReader is setup to only look in a specific location/folder for book files??

Does anyone have any ideas?

FYI, I do use fbReader already, but I need eReader as I have books that I purchased when I had a Palm before, so, need to open them in this app...

Thanks!

I think there was a thread on creating a Palm Launcher folder somewhere but what has worked for me is installing the actual book using the Garnet main install menu. Then when you open up ereader the book will be in the list.

Now where it copies to - I have no idea, if it does at all. But I suppose someone could try installing an ebook and then deleting it to see if it's just a symlink to the actual file or it puts in somewhere in the virtual system. :-)

Yes, this way does install it to the virtual system into the gvm.store file. The one thing I found was that eReader will crash the GVM system and wipe out your internally installed apps if you install Webster's New World College Dictionary internally and try to access it when reading an ebook. However if you install the dictionary to your SD card, then the system remains stable without the "wipe-out" problem. That's really the main reason why I install all my ebooks to my SD card for eReader since that is where I store the dictionary.

I could install and use ptlyrics +ptunes for once time (first time after installation)

After that ptunes fails always when play a mp3 and show the error "Couldn't play song. It may be using an unsupported sampling rate..."
but the mp3 files are correct and ptunes could play in the past.

I uninstalled both apps and reinstalled ptunes again and the problem stills.

The point is ptlyrics uses ptunes on background to play music while ptlyrics shows the lyrics on .lrc files.

In a Palm device I never had any problem, but anything changes in the GVM after using ptlyrics the first time.

If any poweruser can try in a fresh GVM ....

ptunes 4.07 or 4.05
ptlyrics 1.2.0

As far as I've been able to test, GVM does not emulate the new style PalmOS 5 hacks, and pre OS 5 hacks won't work, so I do not think any Fonthack-like thing will work...

(There are some alternatives to hacks that might work, but I don't know which software uses which)

Yep, javispedro must be dead on because I can't get any of those hacks working including Fonts4OS5. Sorry, Addison, the only program on Garnet that I have smooth fonts on is eReader. Your other possibility is to get an old Tapwave Zodiac off of eBay.for around $40 that will run all of these hacks. It's got a great screen too that's similar in size to the N800.

/usr/bin/gvm/gvm -O none -a lnch -d 8192 -B /home/user/MyDocs/.images/gvm.png -u James

Are there any additions or alterations that might give me better success on this?

I also wonder about CallRec as well.

My sound keeps pooping on me in gvm. Is anyone able to get CallRec or any other recording app to work?

Cheers!

Hey, Addison......

I got them all to work,...but not through the command line. I run them through GarnetVM's regular menu, and configure them with Dynamic heap size = 4 MBytes, Device model = Tungsten T|X, and Display compatibility = Maximum.

BTW, nice find on that Russian site! :)

No way!

You actually did?

Sweet!

I can't wait to try them later with your suggestion. :)

In /home/user/.gvm/gvm_apps_config there's an option for autoRefresh that Garnet VM looks at before launching something.

I'm not seeing an option for autoRefresh in gvm but there is one for deviceID.

Is there any way to launch gvm by command line to get the lnch to launch with this autoRefresh option?

That way, any application or game I click on in the menu will also have the exact same option specs as the lnch one.

I've already tried this through Garnet VM but I'd really want to avoid that since it likes to corrupt everything when it's being moody.

Maybe using the -j or -g options?

I'm not sure.
