View Full Version : Reporting SPAM

Just today I saw a SPAM thread in the Buy & Sell forum; it a quite a few hours old and had twenty views, but it was still there.

Remember, when you see a thread or post that you think is SPAM, report it by clicking the report button http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/images/buttons/report.gif located on the top bar of every post (all the way too the right, on the same bar the time of the post is).

I use the Classic vBulletin theme, so depending on the theme you use, the button may be in a different spot and look differently.

By clicking that button, any forum Administrators (Reggie) will receive a message so they can take care of the issue. This will help keep the forum clean and SPAM-free.

I reported 3 (THREE) spams just yesterday. Can we please change the setting that says that I must wait at least a minute between spam reports. Please?

I hate spam. Really. I HATE spam. I'll go out of my way to report each and every one I come accross. If you say I must wait 5 minutes, I'll wait 5 minutes. But I would really prefer not having to wait. Thank you.

I did the same. Perhaps a rule could be set up so if X number of senior members report it, the accused user would automatically be suspended. However have some potential repercussions on the reporters. For example if for some reason a bunch of you got together in some sort of conspiracy and reported say a post by me was spam, just to suspend me for a while.

I report them as well, and just do something else while I need to wait 60 seconds. But, if we report the same post several times... is that really useful for the moderator/administrator?

We could use a few, active (undercover) moderators dealing with simple issues like these. There is already a thread about that suggestion in this sub-forum though. Consider to contribute to it.

If X reports from senior members (say 10) by a new poster triggered an automatic ban and removal of all recent postings by said poster there would be no need for a moderator/admin to step in.

I'm especially thinking of a few recent spams where the poster hit several subforums with the same canned spam and his total post count was the sum of those posts.

If someone's post was deleted as spam, a message would automatically be sent to them informing them of what happened and why. That person could complain, and anyone who wrongly deleted a post would face some sort of bad consequences.

Yeah, perhaps, with some kind of ombudsmen.

Just be glad you're not dealing with teenagers on this forum. They try all kind of tricks to work around the rules. Dealing with these spammers should be much easier.

Hide them instead of removing them. Then there is responsibility, and proof of data. Can always remove it later.

re: wrongly deleted - That's why I suggested X number of complaints by SENIOR members and repercussions when you all gang up on allnameswereout:P

Works for me, as long as they don't show up.

I don't mind the occasional post of someone trying to sell a phone, but my forum reading is primarily to click on new posts and see what is happening. As I've said before this forum has a very high S/N ratio, I like it that way.

Texrat -
I don't know if you noticed my first post in this thread.
Since I had already used myself as an example I chose the last poster before my comment because it was easy to cut and paste the name.

And yes, if I was spamming, ban me.

But if I appealed to Reggie and he agreed, then whomever posted to ban me should suffer "some potential repercussions" such as an X day ban. Or in your case maybe an X hour ban.:D

/edit - maybe make another layer of member, say over 500 posts ,- with "license to ban", I'm just trying to suggest staying away from the complexity of full moderator duties.

See, I was a spam-hatin' report-slappin' son-of-a-gun too, before they rolled out the (AWESOME!) minimalistic theme. Which unfortunately doesn't have a report button. So while I'll occasionally switch theme just to report an annoying spammer, I usually don't bother. And I use the minimalistic theme always on my N800s and Eee, usually on my desktop, and occasionally on my laptop, so my spam reports are probably down around 15-20% what they were...

Hmm, that is a problem. Maybe a good place for it would be the bottom right of the post, so it would look like "Quote | Thanks | Report"?

That minimalistic theme does look sweet, but I wish the the background weren't black...

Edit: Ouch the minimalistic theme also doesn't have the "Go to first unread post in this thread" button http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/images/buttons/firstnew.gif. I'm addicted to that button :(

I think there is a 12 step program for the minimalistic theme which takes 21 days to complete.
However I've found the minimalistic theme addictive on the N810. Maybe it could be added under quick links.

Well, when you first go to the thread from the search screen, you can click the post count instead of the title, and it takes you to the first unread post.

Wow, I never even tried that. In the Classic Theme, clicking that would bring up the "Who Posted" dialog box, so I figured that the same behavior would be present with the minimalistic theme -- guess not!

Thanks for the tip.

Yes, on the NIT the minimalistic theme is probably preferred and should be default. But I'm here usually on my laptop or via remote desktop, and then I prefer the default (N810) theme. Perhaps a feature where one can define their client and use appropriate theme is useful. I'd certainly appreciate it.

BTW, no offense taken, and my remark about teenagers stems from my experience as administrator on a (big) forum dealing with teenagers.

It seems like on this board all of the teenagers act like normal, civil adults, with the exception of that porting fool, qwerty12, who posts and ports like a tenured professor.

And speaking of SPAM - 4 posts in the either the 4 sale forum or deals and promos from one poster alone.

I'm bumping this post because we've been getting some spam lately. Rather than reporting it, people are replying to it. Replying to it just gives the spam greater visibility.

I used to mod a forum where we'd get spam porn. Trouble was, it was bad porn. About as dodgy as some of these wonderful sale bargains are, I suspect. ;)

golden rule.

1. report
2. don't answer. no matter what
3. wait until thread dies and is sucked up in the abyss of other old threads ;) (or it gets removed by admins)
