I've been lurking on these forums for a couple of weeks now. I got my Nokia 770 as a birthday present for myself. I'd been wanting something to replace my iPhone since I got rid of it (was tired of paying $30/mo for internet on my phone), and this seemed perfect.

I did a lot of searching as to which OS I should use, but all of the discussions I came upon were very old (>1 year, usually). So I decided to go with 2007HE. It hasn't been working too horribly, but it crashes once or twice a day, and it seems awfully slow. So, after reading more forum posts in here about unrelated things to OS2006 vs OS2007, it seems that OS2007HE is still pretty unstable.

So, I'm reverting to OS2006 right now (just got pyplucker set up nicely, too, dangit!). I was just wondering if this was the general consensus that others have as well.

TIA!

For what I know, slowness may come from metacrawler, just move /usr/bin/metacrawler to /usr/bin/metacrawler.disabled (as root).

Instability comes either from a device that was set to usb host by flashing (this would cause indeed a reboot at least once a day for me), or from a lack of memory. Add virtual memory.

I use 2007he and am very happy with it. Very stable, fast enough for my needs. If you have a few dozens of dollars to spare, buy a microsd card and build an adapter (google this forum about that, you need to change the kernel etc). I use a 8BG card.

Thanks! I switched back to '06 and my tablet is running much more smoothly and faster, with no crashes so far. When I did a restore, though, I had some problems! No images in the browser, messed up home screen, etc. So I re-reinstalled '06 and only restored my docs, better now.

Only problems are that I can't install Canola, it says it is dependant on several files (libxrandr2, etc). I searched and found some old posts with help, but all of the URL's on those posts are broken. And then some like this one (which is my problem exactly)

Probably too noob for anyone to answer, so I'll spend the next day or two trying to figure it out.... LOL. Gotta learn somehow. Although my search didn't turn up much so far (http://www.google.com/custom?hl=en&client=google-coop&cof=AH%3Aleft%3BS%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.internettable ttalk.com%2F%3BCX%3AInternetTabletTalk%252Ecom%3BL %3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.internettablettalk.com%2Fimage s%2Fittwhite.jpg%3BLH%3A41%3BLP%3A1%3BVLC%3A%23551 a8b%3BGFNT%3A%23666666%3BDIV%3A%23cccccc%3B&adkw=AELymgWALcmf6xcrq8XTx_RQ-1Rwmh61ffMUahbnK89s8ZnoH0PNMIc8HCbbEJMS1d7swuuMOYQ FyI8ztGDrItKbF00_pe911jeCvL0ocKFeVSfm5r_MxxZLK3K8f Rju998V0B0U6UzgC6Ktwub6DJxMmiHcu4BzLw&q=libxrandr2&btnG=Search&cx=005981223421171304650%3Awt9tjwf2kd4)

Only 8 results.

Other problem is that I can't launch the RSS reader. Off to search!

OK, solved my first problem! For easier searching and for future reference of others like myself, to install Canola if you have a problem on OS2006 on the 770, navigate on your N770 to: http://openbossa.indt.org/canola/install.html
Then click on OS 2006, and follow the simple directions! It works like a charm.

Any comments on OS2006 vs OS2007HE vs OS2008HE for the 770?

(for archival purposes: Libxrandr2, libreadline 4.3.1, libreadline 4.3-10, dependency, missing, package, 2007HE, 2008HE, 2007, 2008, vs.)

Hi JDeath!
I'm new too and like you got the n770,after much reviewing as gift to myself. I also jumped from IT 2007 HE,to IT 2006SE. I have a 1 gig card and virtual memory is 64mb but HE builds still are slow and packages seem larger for that OS. I used nearly 90 percent of space! MicroB loaded slower, and Canola2 never installed right.
So,back to 2006 I am. Everything is fasrer and even with same software,I took up only 50 percent of space! Wow! MicroB is faster due to lacking plugins. I'm using it now in ITT.
It's best to use 2006. Old maybe, but it has themes, software and speed that feels new. Try out all the software, and you'll see it's no big difference. Same stuff in 2008 is for 2007 and 2006. Give or take.
For dependancies you listed you have to use Gronmayer.com. Works for me. :)

Yes, thanks. I've definitely found that OS 2006 is the best choice for the 770. So, I also wanted to share for new users or newbies this post that I found regarding speed on the N770:

http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21444

This is a very well written post with lots of good tips, although it looks like it would be good to familiarize yourself with maemo/linux and the 770 first before trying all of that.

I got canola installed, but, I can't find my UPnP servers. I'm just not sure where to look in Canola to find TVersity, etc. I will look around for the answer and try to post it here, because I have read several other posts with that question and no answers.

Thanks for all the input, guys! I need to get myself a bluetooth keyboard, I think this thing will be great when I go back to school.

I am on the Canola site (http://openbossa.indt.org/canola/add.html) now.
I really love how pro this software is.
Can't get Youtube plugin working at all!
Luckily I just download the file and change them to avi's. Takes all night.
Does the UPNP software work in iTunes?

I user Opera (default browser) on my 770 in OS2006 and I'm pretty happy with it. I disabled flash and it runs much more stable and faster, and I've found I don't need flash for any of the sited I use. YMMV

Also, I DL youtube videos with Canola.
You need the latest version of the Canola Youtube plugin, but it won't install on the 770. You can manually extract the needed files and copy them over.

I posted about it on one of the Canola threads. Not sure where now, I'll search a bit for it.

Found it:

I just DL'd Weird Al's Bob, so I know it still works.

Yeah, I don't see a point currently with the HE's. I think 2006 will be great for me in flash, and eventually I'll have Mer on my SD card and choose from both.

I agree. It's now my main OS until I get something better.
Sorry Jdeath,I'm back to 2007 HE for good!
