For N800 users.

>> you can create a playlist of your music files by following command (in Xterm).
find /your/musics/dir -name "*.mp3" -o -name "*.ogg" > your-playlist-name.m3u
Once you open it in quasar , it'll be loaded automatically next time.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When you want to set a cover art , but CoverArtDownloader can't find out it.

>> try to find and download it by your hands , and rename(format: "<artist> - <album>.jpg") and move it to your cover art directory(default: /home/user/.quasar/coverart/).
ie: mv /media/mmc2/downloads/1982_funkysong.jpg "/home/user/.quasar/coverart/Michael Jackson - Thriller.jpg"

Looks like they've ripped off a whole lot of UI elements from iTunes. That's not to say that the app isn't cool, but I'm not sure Apple would appreciate it. ;)

2.download libxinerama1_1.0.1-4.1_armel.deb from here (https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=632) and install it.

I get "Incompatible Application Package" on step 2. I stopped there because I didn't know if the steps needed to be done in order.

Any thought about getting into Extras (or at least Extras-devel)? Installing it then would be trivial; and people wouldn't have to fight with red-pill mode or command lines.

Actually, this is not true. I'm the developer of this little app. The version t_moyashi made available here (cool btw!) is the current SVN snapshot version. I have not made a new release available because currently I do not have much time to finish and release it, but it is still being developed and as far as I can tell, it is running stable for the last year. That's why I introduced nightly builds a few weeks ago, so anyone can try the app - even though there is no official release.
Btw, Quasar Media Player is available for Zaurus Qtopia and pdaXrom, Linux, Win32 and OS X.
The nightly builds are available here (that is, if there were changes on the day before...):

Once I got it installed, its a pretty good media player. Quick loading, Relatively good touch controls (for the main options at least) The small buttons are difficult to hit without a stylus. I like how when in the info screen play mode, there are 9 hotzones on the screen that are fully configurable. Only problem I've run into is Cover Flow can crash the program.

One question, is there a way to point the program to grab the cover.jpg files in each of my music folders instead of grabbing from the .id3 tag or the web?

Still no luck. Odd, I tried rebooting. Tried adding the .deb extension to the file names.

Edit:
I got installed on my N800, but still no luck on the N810...weird.

Edit2:
On N800: got it to load music list. I started looking at the view options and it crashed. Now I cannot get it to open even after rebooting.

Anyone manage get it to work properly on N800 ? For me, it does come up, but is dead slow, and will crash occasionally - and there does not seem to be a way to turn up the volume

Is there an user guide ?

As stated in the first post, volume adjustment isn't yet working in Maemo. You can, however, adjust volume from the status bar.

Oh - I took that to mean that the volume slider is not working. I was hoping that there would be another way to up the volume. Anyway, I moved the N800 status bar slider all the way up, and the slider on the Quasar app is at the minimum and I hear faint sound. If I now open Canola and slide the Canola volume slider all the way up and restart Quasar , I see the Quasar slider all the way up - BUT - the sound is still faint .

The app look promising, but I do not think it is ready for N800 yet :(

I'm assuming that volume can't be adjusted at all (for now). There are shortcuts as well. I've used the preset ones for the Info Display mode, that didn't work. Have yet to try keyboard shortcuts. I'm using a N810, and its plenty loud enough. I'm not sure what the problem would be with the N800. I would have assumed it worked the same, except for lacking a keyboard. Guess I'm wrong. Hopefully the bugs get worked out, I'm liking it so far.

I noticed the same thing but didn't want to be the first ***** to post on this. *lol*

Anyway, my first impression of Quasar is wow!

Very nice and extremely slick in design!

Even if there are festering bugs in this version, I'd say it's still worth keeping. :)

Thanks t_moyashi. That fixed it. Now to see if I can get it to install on the N810.(edit: got it working on the N810 too)
On my N800 it seemed to work fine except for the lack of the OSK support. You cannot save playlists because you cannot name them.

You can make a playlist by this command (in Xterm).
find /your/musics/dir -name *.mp3 -o -name *.ogg > your-playlist-name.m3u
and Quasar can open it.
about OSK , I have no idea...

Loading up a movie file from Quasar, I'm noticing a slight drop in speed and performance through mplayer.

Best to launch your movie file directly from mplayer instead.

I've noticed that when in the full screen info mode, on my tablet when a new song starts, every 5-10 seconds the audio will have a short hang, like the tablet's slowing down, then it plays normal. This seems to continue until I exit the full screen mode. I haven't noticed any such lags while in the playlist view though.

I do not own any of the Nokia internet tablet devices. That makes it hard for me to iron out most of the device-specific problems some of you mentioned. I guess t_moyashi can help with that.

As for the volume control, can anyone of you tell me which device is used for volume control on the Maemo platform? Is it /dev/mixer?

The volume control code is located in /core/platform/system_volume.cpp
There is an option to use the internal volume control of MPlayer instead of directly interfering with the sound driver via /dev/*. This requires recompiling the application. Perhaps somebody can do that?

I like the full screen mode with the tap for play and pause. I wish though I could adjust the playlist as I see fit like in itunes other than just load the files into it.

It depends on what type of playlist you have created. Dynamic playlists can not be changed in order because they are automatically created directly from a predefined set of directories, thus, it is the directories that define the order of items in the playlist.
However, normal playlists (and the OTG playlist for that matter) can be adjusted. There is a special mode that allows moving the items around. It can be activated either via Edit > Move Item Mode or via the first button in the upper right corner.

t_moyashi (http://talk.maemo.org/member.php?u=23408), could you provide a command line instruction for removing Quasar, libxinerama1_1.0.1-4.1, and libqt3-mt_3.3.7 please. It's a nice program and all but including a way to remove it would be even nicer. :)

I'm spoiled by YouAmps "search" feature that I use to build playlists from.

congratulations!!! thiis is a FANTASTIC mediaplayer!!!
it reads without problem all my playlists created in m3u... the interface is intuitive (itunes xD lol) and it's quick!!! and uses mPlayer for videos (so it can read anything)

very very useful!!!

a minor request may be the implementation of the OSK...this wuould make it PERFECT! (because i cannot search or save any playlist on my n800 ç_ç)

for the n810 user is already near-perfect as mediaplayer!!

This looks really interesting and I'll try it out.
Any chance this will be accessible through the Extras repo though so that future updates can be caught?

I'm trying to install this but it's failing for me.
I set my app managed in red pill mode.
I go to the garage site and click on libxinerama1_1.0.1-4.1_armel.deb and select 'Open'. When trying to now install it from the app manager I get 'incompatible application package' :(

1) Any help on the above? I'd love to try this one out,
2) Will this ever come packaged into one deb - and in the extras repo? And if not, what is the reason for requiring this cumbersome install?

you have to use the dpkg commands, yeah I've fighted a lot with xD

I Have the files in the mmc2, in a subdirectory "programs" and a sub-subdirectory "quasar"...

gain root in xterm and write:

dpkg -i /media/mmc2/programs/quasar/libxinerama1_1.0.1_4.1_armel.deb

then:
dpkg -i /media/mmc2/programs/quasar/libqt3-mt_3.3.7_armel.deb

and in the end:

dpkg -i /media/mmc2/programs/quasar/quasar_0.96r172r31-maemo1_armel.deb

with me worked fine ^_^
(ps: relook to the filename in the command I've wrote, I may be wrong, but the command is right xD xD)

Thanks, gonna try it right away :)

Edit: Worked great that way - thanks!
And wow; that's quite the music player. Looks great.
Almost an overwhelming number of options but it was rather easy to set up the basics I wanted.
Very nice...

Can't believe I've only just come across this. So simple and quick, it takes the best bits from my two favourite players, Canola and XMMS, and makes an awesome player! However, I think the buttons should have better uses. For example, the + and - keys could change tracks or volume, with full-screen or dpad centre for pause/play. Then, there would be a perfect Maemo player! :D

Edit: Ah. I just came across customisable hotkeys in configuration. I feel rather stupid now :p

Yeah the key congiuration is completely personalizable = )

personally on my n800, I use the -\+ key as previous/next song, right and left as +15/-15 secs on the track, the back arrow as pause and the f4 (the "menu key") as "add new directory to the playlist" xD it gives a really quick ability to create/manipulate playlists even Without the stylus ^_^

There is much too like about this app, but on both my N800 & N810 just touching the slider (horizontal scroll bar) for the album art crashes Quasar.

Any reason why the 'Now playing' screen maxes out the CPU? Makes the app definitely not of any use away from the mains...

- When I click on the scrobble option there is no way for me to close that window.

- The Cover art finder is SLOW...as in VERY slow - to the point that I think it freezes.

- Adding files to a playlist using 'add directory and sub-directories' creates duplicate entries of any songs already in the playlist.

I think it's normal, because is still a work in progress i think; when you click on the srcobble, you have to close the window 2 times to close quasar...(do not ask me why because i don't know xD xD xD); the cover art, as I said in the other topic, you better downlad it apart ant then put in .quasar/coverarts....and the fragility of the coverarts, I've noticed it...it may crash because of an intensive use of cpu (for example, I think it will be a ussue related to the lack of 3d accelleration...i suppose ò.ò xD)

I didn't noticed that, I use osso-statusbar-cpu, and the graphic doesn't seem to be too afflicted from the app...

This is an awesome player.

Installation:
- As OP posted, do NOT use app manager.
- dl the 3 files as in OP 1st post into one folder, say /media/mmc2/quasarfiles
xterm
gain root
cd /media/mmc2/quasarfiles
ls (there should be only the 3 files)
dpkg -i *.* (this should only install the 3 files in that particular folder)

will install without problem :)

To use:
xterm
quasar
Edit>Add from Directory #point to your directory to put your mp3s
File>Save Playlist #this will save a playlist for your next use, N800 seems to have problem with onscreen keyboard

Enjoy,

bun

in emelfm 2, unchek the "green H" on the top! this will sho the files hidden! (like in fact .quasar)

you will find then .quasar and the quasar.conf there ^_^

then in the command write "leafpad" (without the ") and open with it ^___^

hope to be useful ^_^

Sorry, can't help here since I do not own a Nokia device. Could debug all issues named here if anybody is willing to buy me a device. ;)

- The Cover art finder is SLOW...as in VERY slow - to the point that I think it freezes.

Care to elaborate? What exactly is slow? Downloading the cover art images or just searching for the cover art?

- Adding files to a playlist using 'add directory and sub-directories' creates duplicate entries of any songs already in the playlist.

What you are using seems to be normal static playlists. This behavior is by design.
Instead use the dynamic playlist feature and add your directory. Then every time you add new files to that directory, just do a rescan via the Tools menu.

The stuff works on all other platforms I am supporting (Zaurus, Windows, OS X). I really wish I would be able to help here...
Perhaps t_moyashi can compile another build with full debug enabled in debug.h.
That might help tracking down some of the things if I get enough reports...
Thanks again for checking out Quasar and thanks t_moyashi for providing the build.

I installed quasar to N900, and it works well

Installation, this thread #65

I used the version on thread #1

It installed without any complaint, used up 5 MB of the precious /rootfs

It runs and does more or less like it runs on my N8x0, almost everything works, including the HW volume buttons :-)

Problems:
1) Cannot save playlist, no onscreen keyboard and HW keyboard brings up contact list.
2) Mplayer stopped when surfing web

Hope you still putting in effort on this player, one of my favorite. Thanks, t_moyashi and evilJazz

Just a short update: I am in the process of porting Quasar Media Player from Qt 2/3 to Qt 4. This will add support for Maemo 5 (and earlier) and should improve the usability and offer the Maemo look and feel.
The port is a lot of work, so it might take a while to get it finished but I am hopeful. It is already working for the most part on my Mac, however not on my N900...
The Qt 4.6 version that is available for the N900 and the other internet tablets does not include the Qt3Support lib. I can understand why they do not include this support. Either way, I am taking the hard way of porting completely to Qt 4 without the compatibility and legacy support.
You may follow the current status via: http://twitter.com/#search?q=evilJazz%20Quasar

Cheers,
Andre

I've installed this tonight, mainly cos I'm sick of Canola crashing everywhere lately, and the built in player is functional at best, and I have to say that I like it.

Only comment would be that I think that the standard interface is a bit busy for a 4" touchscreen, and could so with a few less buttons etc.

I particulary like the coverflow - how do you toggle between full screen views of the cover-flow, playinfo, and the playlist screens. I would like to see an option to start full screen by default, and use the "full screen" button to move between the screens above. there probably is a way that I haven't found yet!!

I also like the playinfo screen - very nice.

thanks and keep up the good work
