Just checked up on the Nokia World 2009 page and spotted the N900 in the main video. It's at :22 seconds.
It shows off the main screen widgets - very nice! :D:cool::eek:

cheers!

Thats actually the n97 being shown off. The ugly, blocky s60 Touch buttons on the side give it away. Also, You can see how the home widgets are confined to rectangular blocks, which is indicative of the n97, whereas maemo should have freely moveable widgets I believe.

You sure that's not an N97 or something? Looks like the S60 buttons at the right hand side of the screen as it flicks past...

That's the homescreen of the N97 for sure.

Maybe another false alarm tomorrow:
But worry not, Nokia is preparing a bunch of other touchscreen-enabled phones, some of which don’t carry thumbboards, yet target the same segment as the Nokia N97 Mini. One of them will be previewed tomorrow, and I think you’ll understand why the Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition and the Nokia N97 Mini have got a rival in the making and why Nokia will reveal only shortly before it lands on most markets. ... ... ... ... I haven’t decided yet whether I want to release previews of all four models or give them to you bit by bit, as their announcement is still pretty far-off.

The Nokia appointed leader of our community apparently.

I say "Nokia appointed" because he was obviously given a lot of information that could only come from within. Wouldn't you agree?

I say leader because no one from maemo.org has been given this information without a signed NDA. If we want up to date N900 information we need to go to his site and not here.

This dude has got the goods and we don't. How come?

Just wonderin' my own dang self, dormant... :)

EDIT: Nokia apparently figured if ya can't beat 'em, join 'em. They released a press shot of the N900 apparently to support an announcement at Nokia World...

Its the N97 Mini. A Dpad-less N97 with a slightly smaller screen.

Because we have to get ours through legal means?

I am pretty sure that a lot of people in Nokia are pissed off at him. Although the buzz he is generating may be interesting, from what I understand, Nokia wanted the N900 and related devices to be first shown in Nokia World (surprise effect), NOT in Eldar's webpage.

Edit: I am pretty sure that he knew a lot about those devices before (there was a mention of Nokia Netbooks long ago in his site), and I think that he waited until the N900 was leaked enough so his source/s couldn't be pin-pointed easily.

Who is this Eldar?

He's only the GOD of phone reviewing, and my idol. I'm being very serious. His www.Mobile-Review.com is THE best place to read phone reviews, because no one is more in depth, and despite his love for Nokias, he's also probably the most unbiased and honest. He also likes the iPhone alot, and had seemed to begin favoring it, so for him to say this is "the best device of the year" and "iPhone-like" is big accollades.

Believe me, he's not "appointed", he's RESPECTED, and unbeknownst to most, he's always one of the first few people to get EVERY manufacturers' new phones for trial and review. This is the equivalent of a coup for Nokia getting a review this positive before release.

Being a Mobile-Review forum member, I can tell you he's very discreet with his reviews, and he only outed the information Nokia allowed him to. This is in response to media attention, a teaser before the Nokia World event. His footprint is big across the globe, especially in Asia and Europe. This "small" preview has made big ripples, the exact intention.

You're pro'ly right. What I should have said then was Nokia doesn't seem to have the same level of respect for any member of the maemo community. :)

And mrojas (http://talk.maemo.org/member.php?u=20206), I would find it hard to believe Nokia was suprised... maybe someone was embarrassed if this information wasn't supposed to be out yet.

I doubt these execs would consort with low-life's and thieves. I also doubt that this Eldar fellow would kill the goose that keeps laying these golden eggs on his web site by misrepresenting himself.

Just my opinion BTW. :)

I am not saying that Nokia should not have been surprised (and maybe he even got the green light from someone inside): what I am saying is that people there are pissed by sure. As a reference, check this:

All in all, though I am thankful for the quality reviews and previews, I think that in this case in particular, he should have saved them and waited for Nokia World.

Coming from a cellphone fanatic background, Eldar is well known in the mobile community for the last few years to always have the latest prototypes, especially Nokia and SE phones. His previews are exhaustive and very fair. He must have some crazy Russian mafia types on call to get some of the scoops he gets:p

I think Nokia was trying to pull an iPhone maneuver with the N900 (keep everything 100% secret until the end and them... BAM!).

Despite the leaks, they may still achieve that with the average consumer, I see many experienced users in various forums saying "No one saw Maemo coming!" (specially N97 buyers...).

I'll reiterate, Eldar is doing exactly what Nokia asks of him. This isn't really a leak. Just like the N97, which no one knew jack about except Eldar, this thing has been kept under wraps.

Nokia realizes the online press is powerful, and sees that its US centric base isn't experienced enough to "get it" about its devices, spewing "Eww, nasty" while the rest of the world seems to like it at least on some level. Eldar is a man of the globe, "The Most Interesting Man In The World", if you will, when it comes to phones. Since this is a phone, it was important that the Phone God gave his blessings before folks like certain writers from BGR cloud the water with foolish prattle. Having a Maemo Talk person expose it would've been wrong. Nokia is trying to shed its' "for geeks" image, and this site is only "for geeks", and would've been more cementing of that image. PR is a game, and Nokia's playing it big. Wait until TMobileUSA's N900 ad campaign ramps up. It'll be the first time a Nokia has been the center of a major US ad campaign since the JayZ Black Phone, and being a smartphone/web tablet above the levels of the iPhone, it'll be the buzz of the season. I just hope TMobile is willing to properly subsidize it. It must be under $249 on contract, and we'll have ourselves a real fire for the first time.

You may be right, else why would he release so many photos of N900 except the main official one.

If that was truly a leak, the "official photo" should have been the first one he should have really revealed!

Btw, even I am eager to see the sideway shots of this device. I hope Eldar reads this!

To be fair to Eldar, there is nothing surprising in his post - it's more of an extension of the screenshots and info we already have from the sdk, and you can't really tell just how good the eye candy is without a video of it, so I can't see Nokia being upset at him at all.

It's really nice to see it all hanging together though, very exciting!

I think this is a very good thing he did this, at least we can be pretty sure it is coming very very soon.

I'm just hoping (although I doubt it) it's in the nokia uk store on the same day, and they still do the "I want it now" delivery option :-D

And I can't wait for people to ask "Is that an IPhone?"....drooling in anticipation!

BTW - talking about emoticons.
I wonder if Nokia have finally moved away from their proprietary emoticon format in N900, or have tried to carry it on?
After using SE handsets, this has really bugged me in S60...

The n900 is reported to be about 4mm thicker than the n810. Something like 18mm compared to 14mm.

-~3mm for the camera "bulge"... should be bearable.

nikolajhendel

hmmm - 18 mm is still quite a bit for a phone - and 21 at the thickest point (camera bulge) if I understand it correctly.

vkv.raju

I guess, it is 15+3
Else as you said, 21 would be too thick a device.

Eldar is not leaking anything, he's cooperating with Nokia and other companies. If you follow his twitter he needs the green light before posting.

If companies are upset with him or if he got phones illegally, he would have been sued and in jail long ago. Trading prototype phones is illegal.

Companies can always confiscate all the protos from him, then what will Eldar write? He's working hand in hand with these companies and are are probably paid by them.

Perhaps.....however, it just seems strange to entertain him with all these interviews then cry foul at the same time. When is the last time some Nokia VP graced the halls of maemo.org (ITtalk) and gave anyone an interview?;)

Ari Jaaksi is a VP, he was interviewed last year in TabletBlog and had a dinner with council members, ITT founders and some bloggers at the Desktop Summit.
