View Full Version : Will T-Mobile USA directly offer the N900? If so, when and for how much?

Ok i have problem. The N900 unlocked that you can pre-order from NokiaUSA. What are people getting it for?? Obviously only T-mobile work on that device...but why are people so certain that Tmobile allow that phone on their 3G network?? If not, isn't that a waste of money to buy it and not be able to use the 3G??
I heard Tmobile has something called Pre-paid Sidekick that charged you $1/day for unlimited data and text messages. But it only work for locked phone and NOT UNLOCKED?? So if I were to order the N900, how do i know they allow it??
I think the problem is that Tmobile want to cripple N900 so that internet call like Skype call...ect..is not allowed because if people can call using internet, then there is no point of getting voice service...everybody will switch to pre-paid Sidekick. But i think that's where the future is headed. Voice data service will be obsolete in favor of internet phone call.

.
I too would like to know if the prepaid Sidekick plan will work for the N900 and which features it will support (3G, tethering, etc.).
I called my local T-Mobile store and asked about having an unlocked phone. They said just bring it in and setup an account. Based on another thread, I believe the issue is if T-Mobile would subsidize the N900.

I talked to T-Mobile about this before I ordered an unlocked N900, just to be sure. I have a G1 right now on the $25 Android unlimited data + 400 message plan. I was told all I have to do is call them back when I get the phone and they will switch me to a special data plan for unlocked phones. A simple click-click re-configuration on their end of some sort and I'm good to go. No waiting for it to take effect. No change in price or service, still unlimited data + 400 messages.
So apparently no problem, but well find out for certain when that N900 arrives.

Wow good price! You get all the skype you can eat plus enough text for anyone who is not a teenager. :D
Why another thread on this so soon? The OP posted in a related one as well...

Wow...this is exciting to here that they allow N900 unlocked. Do you have voice data plan as well? Is your 400 messages included with the unlimited data or did you added separately?? Because i figure with unlimited data you can just message through the use of unlimited internet like AIM or Yahoo Messenger..no need for the 400+ limit messages.

The 400 messages is for SMS (phone-to-phone) messages.

Boy Genius Report has a powerpoint from a T-Mobile presentation (http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/09/12/yep-motorola-cliq-definitely-launching-in-october-to-t-mobile/), showing new phone introductions for the next couple of months. The newly announced Moto Cliq is on the list, but no sign of the N900. That certainly doesn't rule out a N900 on T-Mobile sometime in the future, but it doesn't look like Christmas will include a subsidized N900.

Keep in mind that the N900 was independently developed, while there was cooperation on the phones on that list. This document isn't a high indicator of whether N900 will be offered by T-Mo sometime this year.

Well, I'm still waiting on the 3G version of the n900. I'm not too thrilled about the pricetag, but if it (the 3G version) can be used both in the USA and overseas, then I'm golden. If not, then I guess I'll have to wait a couple years until I'm back from Taiwan to get one. :(

I wish someone would address this for me, too. Does it support Band I and IV, or just one of the two?

It supports both. There is only one model of the N900 (RX-51) that has been circulating among the press and it passed the FCC a little while ago.
Here's the FCC report:
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=1150129&native_or_pdf=pdf
Scroll to page 3 and you'll very clearly see "WCDMA 1700/2100". In other words, *you will get 3G on T-Mobile US as long as you're in an area with 3G coverage*.
To further confirm this, a HoFo (Howard Forums) member recently visited the NYC Nokia Flagship store and tested out the N900 with his own T-Mobile sim card. The 3G symbol showed up as expected. I believe he even put up a picture showing this.
I really don't get why there's so much confusion over this. T-Mobile US customers are set. It's us AT&T customers that are out of luck. All we can do is hope that Nokia will release a device relatively soon with 3G support for our network.

The confusion concerns whether the N900 will work on both the Euro/Asian 3G networks and the U.S. 2100mhz 3G network.
This has been answered in the thread "3G in U.S. vs Europe/Asia."

Or you can simply buy TMobile SIM card and continue using TMobile instead of AT&T. Can't you? :)

Well, for those areas that *have* t-mobile 3g coverage..sure. But over time, they'll fill in the gaps. I'm lucky to have pretty decent coverage where I'm at so I did indeed switch providers in preparation for the N900 (and I managed to save a decent chunk per month in the process).

You know, I would use T-Mobile if not for two reasons.
1. Coverage. I travel a decent amount and while T-Mobile is catching up, it's still quite a bit worse than AT&T.
2. Building penetration was noticeably worse with T-Mobile when I had it and unless they've started going for denser cell sites, it's not going to get better. The fact that both their GSM and 3G bands are mostly up there in the spectrum will continue to be a hurdle (1700,1900, & 2100 MHz although I'm not sure if they have any 850Mhz).
They had pretty good customer service (far better than AT&T *cough*Cingular*cough*) and the plans were and continue to be great value. But what good is all of that when I can't use it half the time, right?
I really hate the state of the cellular industry in the US.

TMo builds its network more densely with more capacity, a product of its higher frequencies and penetrating buildings, which is harder for higher frequencies. Their 3G buildout has been fierce, and new markets are added almost weekly. It is getting pretty good for the major markets, and getting better across the board.

If that supposed buyout of Sprint actually happens it could really change that around quite a bit. I would love to see that happen. I'm a t-mobile faithful and would like to see them squeak into the top 3.

I have always wanted Sprint and Tmo to merge, but unless the MiFi model grows, it will be hard to do with the GSM and CDMA issue.
I have a long standing idea of having a watch that does the network connectivity, and the device using the watch to get the voice and data connection over wifi or another mechanism, all converted into the proper frequencies. Then there would be no incompatible networks, just watches.

hey all,
This is my first thread here so thought i would start off with a bang!!!
I went to my local Tmobile store today and was inquiring on the new phones coming up. He mentioned the regulars: Samsung Behold, Motorola Cliq (he had a working model so played around with it for a while) etc.... These were expected to come out shortly...
When i asked about the n900 he said he has been told that they are not expecting to see it till Jan 2010!!!!
Anyone else heard about this!!!! It puts a major dent in my plans :(

Yup, T-mobile is not getting the N900 anytime soon ( not even in Jan '10). Even if they and it is $200 with contract, I'm not getting it from them because I am now safely enjoying my unlimited $5 data plan per month now from them. Don't want to pay $30 per month for data plan.

I am paying $25 on one phone $5 on the other. The $25 plan allows me to ssh to servers. The $5 plan can use http, I can get google, maemo-mapper downloads maps and routes. But direct IP port access is not possible on the $5 plan I have. Maybe you dont need anything but http, or maybe you live somewhere else where its different, but where I am, those are not the same data access.

Maybe that's true but they now don't even have the $25/month data plan available much more the $5 one. The cheapest (http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/plans/Cell-Phone-Plans.aspx?catgroup=Internet-Email-cell-phone-plan&WT.mc_n=InternetEmail_PlanFirstTile5&WT.mc_t=OnsiteAd) data plan with T-mobile is $30 with a limited data of 200MB per month. At the moment though, I have not need to us ssh on my N95 (don't even know if it is capable of doing it).

Those are data only plan prices, the cost is $25 if you have a voice plan. I have the $25 t-mobile data plan and I have it tethered as bluetooth modem constantly, I easily do well over 200mb month and have never had any problems, I think the limits are for data only plans for laptops.
Not sure why one would get a n900 and not get a voice plan.

I was checking the web site, won't you also be able to get the "web2go" add-on (http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/addons/services/information.aspx?PAsset=InternetEmail&oscid=E29459F6-A1E4-4035-9516-C7D516E76334&tp=Svc_Tab_OtherPhones) for $19.95?

I still have the older t-mobile total-internet plan, the web2go is fairly new and I haven't switched, I also use a special VPN version of the total-internet plan and haven't really researched how web2go works.

There must be some logic to how T-Mobile's plans fit together, but I haven't been able to figure it out. (Not that the maze is any simpler than other carriers'.)
What is this $5 plan being referred to — is it something that's no longer available or is it just well hidden? I haven't been able to find any information on it at all.
And the unlimited internet option for "other phones" on the website has two $19.95 choices — one with, one without that "web2go" feature — but not the $9.95 choice in the brochure I picked up when walking by a T-Mobile affiliate.
Rounding the figures, I've seen the cost listed as $5, $10, $20, $25 and $30 for being able to access the internet from an N900 (not to mention $40, $50 and $60 plans that are maybe plans for tethering a laptop to a phone, although not clearly labeled as keep-away-from-otherwise).
And, of course, since our family has a Sprint plan for our current phones, I don't really need to use T-Mobile's voice services for months and months to come.
Or is it still impossible to use T-Mobile 3G when I'm away from wifi without paying an exorbitant amount of money for the privilege?

There used to be a "T-Mobile Web" plan that was offered first for $4.99 and then for $5.99. I guess you were supposed to use it for browsing WAP pages on your non-smart phone, but, as people found out, it really is "real" internet access, just restricted to web (proxy based) and mail related ports (i.e., no IM and no SSH), and T-Mobile laudably doesn't prevent tethering. Recently, it even seems that the port restrictions are no longer in place.
And yes, I don't think they let you add this option any more.
However, this page (http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/addons/services/information.aspx?PAsset=InternetEmail&oscid=E29459F6-A1E4-4035-9516-C7D516E76334&tp=Svc_Tab_OtherPhones) also mentions "Unlimited Web for phones $9.99/month - Get Unlimited Web access.".

Tmo will not subsidize an unlocked device. Makes no sense from a cost perspective of customer support.
Tmo may offer the N900 as an unlocked, unsubsized product with 20 month payments, but with no warranty.
BTW, unless the rep you talk to at Tmo is an area manager or higher, they know nothing until the public knows within a 24 hour window. They are told the day before public.
I have the $9.99 plan from TMo. I can access ssh ports, update OMWeather, etc. Seems open to most ports I have tried.
The only way to get the $4.99 is to be grandfathered in. It's not offered anymore. I had that plan until last month. Then I "upgraded" to use MyFaves and was told the $4.99 plan was incompatible (...line of BS...).
In a previous post, I noted that if TMo can figure out your phone's make, they will deny you access to the $9.99 plan if you have a "dataphone". THen your only choice is the $24.99 plans and up.
Currently, my N900 is flying under the radar.

How is your phone signal and wifi access? The G1 is weak compared to my Tmo Dash. I am hoping the N900 is a bump up with radios.

If anyone from T-Mobile is listening: I'm on Sprint right now and hate them, but haven't found anything yet worth switching over for. A full n900 (i.e. I can do want *I* want to do with it) would have me switching the month it comes out. I don't mind the contract so much; it's the lobotimization of the phone that I mind.

WiFi is very good; I notice no difference between this and my N810.
As far as phone signal, TMo signal is fine at work, but is quite weak around my house. My N97 has a really bad time -- I often have to go outside. My N900 has been much better. It seems to be able to do more with the weak signal. I have very few times when I can't make a call or use the signal.

Are you surfing on 3G? I have that "grandfathered" plan and was also wondering if it would work on the N900. I am currently using an E-71 and I can browse the internet, use nimbuzz (chat client for most IM) send and receive emails etc. If your saying that your N900 works with that + 3G, that would be awesome.

Good, since the N810 has a decent wifi radio. My G1 wifi is weaker than my DS, Dash, PSP, Laptops and Archos 5. By about 50% on average :( I have too many toys
Phone radio on G1 is pretty iffy with weak phone signals- Dash is better. We have a lot of hills in Kentucky :)
My N900 is working fine with the $10 t-mo (US) web plan that I originally ordered for an SE TM506. I let the N900 auto-configure thinking that I'd have to tweak the configuration later, but it works just fine. I SSH over it on a semi-regular basis with completely tolerable amounts of latency. I used to tether my TM506 to my N800 and stream last.fm. :D Worked pretty well as long as I had a solid 3G connection. Overall I'm sure that I don't use more than 200MB a month, though.
As for the people hoping t-mo will subsidize the N900; wouldn't it be cheaper in the long run to just by the N900 on a credit card and mix-and-match the plan that you want from t-mo (the $10 web plan + however many minutes you want)?
-John
I personally doubt(and hope) T-Mobile will ever subsidize or maybe even sell the N900 or any other Maemo device. The main issues is Nokia is all about openness and T-Mobile I can almost guarantee will never want to provide support service and warranty service to a phone that any idiot can type "gainroot" and end up bricking.
Wait a minute.
I just talked to a T-Mobile USA sales rep, via the phone, named Rachel yesterday about the N900. I was playing ignorant to the whole thing and asked if the N900 was out and how much it costs. She said, you wont be able to purchase the N900 until mid next month (November) but she couldn't tell the pricing at this time. She had no idea of what the N900 was but found it in her computer system and just read back that it was available mid-November.
So, I would go with what the computer says rather than some sales person, a little higher on the respectable level, just above a used car salesman. Plus, mid-November coincides with the release dates that everyone is reporting back on.
It sounds like Rachel's magic computer is just telling you that you can buy a N900 next month; that just happens to be the most recent ship date I heard. I doubt that Tmobile is selling it next month.
Also, you seem to have too much trust in computers. They lie constantly, because they depend on what humans type into them, and you know what humans are capable of...

I really doubt it, though who knows. I remember a calendar floating around with all T-Mobiles Novemember Releases including BlackBerry 9700, Moto Cliq, Samsung Behold, and a few others. Though no N900 was included.
I really want to try out this phone but cash flow presents a problem. Will T-mobile begin to carry the phone and offer cheaper means of obtaining one?

I don't see any carrier subsidizing this phone. I don't think they want to mess with a phone that has root access right out of the box. I think android is as open as it gets for the carriers.

Well you could always buy it unlocked and unsubsidized and then buy a TMobile plan (and get some free phone).

I would still must rather pay full price and have nothing to do with my carrier
Take up a credit with good conditions before you buy the N900 and then pay it back month by month when you also pay for your phone plan.
It's basically the same, but might be cheaper in the end, esp. since T-Mobile doesn't force an expensive smartphone plan on you.

If they do subsidize it would make a big difference for the old customers because they would want the customers with this device to switch to the smartphone plan which is 25 for internet and 35 for internet and text messages,
Right now I have $20 unlimited txt and Unlimited Shadow Web and this is working just fine and I tested 3G speed while I was in the area and was getting 2.26 dwnld speed. So no I do not want the subsidy of this device, unless they would not force old customers to switch to expensive plans.

Honestly, an extra $5 isn't much. The N900 would require support and training of staff, and we'd have less simple questions flooding this forum. Not to mention it'd give the N900 national marketing exposure in the US, a key to mass market success here in the States. An N900 with unlimited voice, SMS/MMS, and data for $84.99 a month is still hard to beat.

You're grandfathered in on plans at T-mobile and unless you change your features or rate plan they don't force you to switch.
First about OP, only information that i heard about TM going to offer N900 is from representative at Costco Wireless, when i asked TM stores reps, they told that they did not hears about this one at all or they did not heard about this phone will be offered through TM.
About the data plans. I myself have $9.99 plan (not current, but the old one, Tzones Pro), that is giving you unlimited Internet access, 100 pic msges (that are no use because no MMS), and 300 text messages. It is why I'm buying unlock phones, and do not want to switch to any TM data phones.
Recently TM started to offer:
Unlimited Web for phones Free Trial: This service is recommended for frequent Internet users who regularly access the mobile Web to browse their favorite Websites, search for music and videos, etc
They are offered it through the phone or through you personal TM online account, when you got to upgrade you services. I tried to find out for about that that "Free Trial" mean, but all what i got back is that just a name, and for now it was offered for several month.
If you have a data phone listed in ur TM account and $9.99 plan is not available, it is a easy work around to make it available. Basically, just switch you phone to some other one, like Sony TM506, and then add a new data plan, you might need to wait up to 5 working days to change take an effect before it become available.
Also, another question to all of T-Mobile USA customers. As many or you know, we are able to check our current bill or minutes use by sending to network:
#255# or #646#
i was unable to do this with N900, it is giving me an incorrect number, any suggestions?

That's not always true. You are generally in the clear with using a cheaper grandfathered data plan with unlocked devices. But all bets are off once they decide to support a subsidized version of your device.
This happened with a couple of Android phones. People were able to use the cheap plans on the unlocked version of the T-mobile MyTouch for awhile. However, when T-mobile was close to launching the subsidized version, they forced the users of the unlocked version to upgrade to the Android plan, if they weren't already on it.
I kind of doubt that they would subsidize the n900, since they are probably hearing about the WIP nature of the device--there are other N-series devices make better sense to me, like the N97 mini. But if they did, there's a good chance that the $5 & $10 plans will stop working. The $20 "Total Internet" plan might be cut off too (depending on whether they group Maemo with Android), but since it was the grandfathered "smartphone" plan, they will be more likely to let you keep it.

1. Tmo does not care if you have an unlocked phone. They have a support team that deals with unlocked devices- in regards to set-up for service, but not direct device / hardware support.
2. I posted last week that a Nokia rep was in a store in my area and he pointed out that Nokia pushed for the N900 to be part of Tmo's portfolio, but Tmo does not want to subsidize or support an unlocked phone beyond CS calls for service set-up. He also mentioned that Tmo does not want the N900 due to it price point.
Funny thing is the guy was not at the Tmo store for business reasons, but visiting a friend there. The friend is a neighbor of mine- small world.

I think it is a matter of not supporting service messages.

Back to the OP... Now with the Google phone being confirmed as a T-mo 3G frequency phone... do not think T-mo will bring the N900 into the stable.

Not to revive a dead thread, but 2-3 months on, has anyone using the n900 on the cheaper T-Mobile data plans gotten IMEI blocked? (e.g. $5.99 T-Zones, $9.99 web2go etc)
I'm currently on an almost 7 year old grandfathered T-Zones data plan... and I don't want to lose that. I usually turn off all background data usage and consume around 10-20MB or so per month.

1. if tmo offered the n900 it wouldn't be unlocked i'm sure they would lock the subsudized version to there network.
2. price. the n900 price is not inline with several other top end phones they have so i doubt it's price either
i have talked to a couple of ppl from tmo from corporate stores and they all say they will get the n900 in the spring. which makes sense. it gives nokia time to work out some bugs and tmo is known for being slow in bringing in new phones. but also remember tmo is going away from subsidized phones alltogether. so your better off just buying the phone straight out.
Having seen what AT&T did to the Nokia 6681, I wouldn't trust any carrier to not cripple a phone.
That, along with T-Mobile's apparent lack of interest in the N900 compared to the upcoming Android offerings tells me that they are better aligned with a general marketplace that wants usability over potential. According to http://www.tmonews.com/2009/12/nexus-one-pricing-leaked/ the Nexus One will be $180 and available next week (January 5, 2010).
I wouldn't hold my breath for a sponsored N900. From what I can gather, the N900 retail delivery went by basically unnoticed. For example, tmonews.com hasn't had anything on the N900 since the Dell pricing two months ago.

And you hit the nail on the head tmobile will be to busy with the nexus one to even think about offering the n900. And honestly im glad carriers gut the phones features and add that "wont use 90%" of the time bloatware they install I can just think of the things tmobile would strip from this phone:cool:
With being able to buy the n900 unlocked who wants a carrier branded device anyway. No carrier boot logos, no scaring of a carrier logo on the body of the phone and not to mention the freedom of not signing a contract.
