We know the story of carriers and the N900; but I was surprised how many people on Slashdot were not following the N900 news.

the comment scoring system is wacko...

Nah. With the iPhone hanging around, I doubt few even knew of it.

the comment scoring system is wacko...

What makes you say that?

just observing the kinds of comments that get insightful and similar...

maybe if it read "me like" rather then "insightful", it would make sense...

Oh I see. I thought you meant the moderation system itself, which personally I rather like. :)

oops, edited that on you. sorry ;)

No problem. :D

Personally I mostly appreciate that slashdot's comments differentiate between useful and funny comments. Sites like reddit/digg/etc have like 80% "funny" comments which get old quick. Though sometimes they can actually be funny, I'm reading the article to learn something, not be amused. ;) It's also nice to not get those 'comment graveyard' threads like on digg, hate those! But on slashdot in my preferences I can block the comments marked funny so I only get the useful information. (well at least information other people think is useful)

'Slashdotted' refers to 'the Slashdot effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slashdotted)'. I'm sure a N900 can get Slashdotted but that is not what you meant ;)

Actually I find the comments quite positive, and N900 & Maemo get coverage on Slashdot. See for example these 2 recent threads:

I think the N900 is the ultimate Slashdot phone. It's like it was designed for Slashdot readers.

Can you imagine a Beowulf cluster of those N900s? (Just make sure you have unlimited data plans)

heh, and these days, digg, reddit, engadget and some other pages have similar effects.

worst i have heard about was when a physics blog article hit digg, reddit and slashdot at the same time.

who needs ddos bots? ;)

heh, and these days, digg, reddit, engadget and some other pages have similar effects.Yeah, as stated on wikipedia the Slashdot effect is a generic term which gotten its name from Slashdot. Another example is Streisand effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect). The name may imply Barbara Streisand has to be part of the event in order for the event to trigger but that is not the case; merely the event ("effect") is named after her for some reason.

Yep. And the unavoidable 'in Soviet Russia, the N900 hacks you'.

If it ever ships in Russia, otherwise it will ship you to Russia!

OMG, I would just about kill to get slashdotted, dugg, and reddited all at the same time. The most I've ever gotten is one slashdotting, and a could of diggings. But nothing so much that my server even began to remotely cry uncle. :( Ah well. If I ever get to be a famous author, maybe that'll become standard practice. ;)

Why would you need a new theory when 42 is the answer to everything? ;)
