View Full Version : N900 November
Now when i went to the New York Nokia flagship store they also told me a date of November. Do your think this date is for in-store buying and pre-orders will come sooner?

Hmmm... it sounds like news of a delay into November is coming in from multiple sources now.
Well, if true, I won't mind it if it means that they are addressing an issue with build quality.

With todays production techniques stopping a run to correct a design deficiency discovered this late in the game would worry me more.
Marketing logistics might be more likely if there is a delay. It wouldn't suprise me in todays economy if they are still dancing with T-Mo over subsidizing the thing...

So, what happens to all the phones that are shipping on the 27th per the nokia blog article? :D

Yup, at this point the only "fact" is when you actually see one for sale in the stores.
BTW, do you have a link for that blog article.

Nokia Germany is still announcing ca. October 12th for shipment dates.
Could it be that there was a delay in localization for certain countries? That would explain the fluctuating release dates.
Could it be that there was a delay in localization for certain countries? That would explain the fluctuating release dates.
It could also be diffenrences between various sale channels.
For example: Nokia's own on-line shops ship in announced timeframe, other retail stores after that and subsudized phones from networks arriving last.

Well my spare battery and 16GB sd card have arrived from Nokia....
Just waiting for the damn phone now ;-)
Ah the waiting is killing me, and more the fact that on the UK shop it doesn't specify any expected ship date...
Guys,
Sorry to disappoint any of you but I just called the Nokia Flagship Store in London and they told me that they are expecting the phone to be out only in December this year as per their internal news.
I even asked them when we could expect a demo model and they said soon but not sure of the date.
I mentioned to them about the different dates we have been seeing on the internet including the Oct12 date on Nokia Germany, but they just said its either rumours or just estimated dates and are not confirmed.
I was really looking forward to this in Oct, just downloaded the SDK and was all go to start my development on the maemo platform........sigh.....
I just hope the lady on the phone was just giving her understanding of the news and not the official answer from Nokia !
Anyways this doesnt change anything for me, coz the phone is worth the wait, and I hope Nokia is taking this time to iron out every little crease so we dont have another N97.
I seriously doubt the December time frame. In almost every interview the ETA was October. Now a little slippage either way I can see but two months?
I have my doubts that they would have THAT many flaws in the phone.
That being said the Nokia Flagship store in NY gave me a very terse "No release date set"
On the Spain shop there isn't a ship date, but on the phone they told me that it will probably be the first week of October.
I'm not sure how reliable this site is, but...
http://thenokiablog.com/2009/09/14/nokia-n900-available-september-27th/
Here is the important first line - "Mark your calendars for September 27th. Nokia has given one of its major distributors in the United States the estimated date for the Nokia N900."

Not sure if this is the correct place to ask this, but the earlier mention of 'localization' for different countries has got me thinking.
With Nokias S60 handsets, when a new firmware is released, it comes out at different times for different product codes / countries.
Does the same apply to their tablets? Or with maemo is there just one release for everyone?
Thanks.

Just one release on the previous maemo versions. maemo5 is probably the same.
But the KB layout is different for example nordic countries.

Guys,
just saw this so thought Ill share it with you.
"Tentative delivery date: November 2009. "
on the Nokia UK website.
And I found the following on nokia.it:
Disponibilità prevista: fine ottobre
Which means, it is expected to be available at the end of October.
This is starting to look bad :P
On eXpansys (http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=186949), it is said that the expected release date is 19 October.

I am still sticking wth the nokiablog for 27th just to make my self happy, or even the nokia usa CS says its mid october and when i asked specifically was told should be delivering the phone with in 2nd week of october.
And didn't this kind of date change rumor was going for a while when the N97 was on pre-order but it did ended up being available on the same expected delivery date?

LOL! I'm waiting for the phone, too. But i'm holding off the purchasing of spare batteries until I get the phone. It'll be not only my first nokia device, but my first maemo device, and I'm a little worried :$ and scared. So Nokia said I get 14 days to try it out and decide (well I decided when I pre-ordered, they're just giving me 14 days to return it! lol).
But yeah, Maybe I should just buy a spare battery now xD I know I'm going to kill the damn thing in 4 hours flat! haha.
PS: Shipping in Spain (where I am) said "estimated 3-4 weeks" DAMN YOU NOKIA! I hope it comes out soon! Like EARLY october :P
The swedish nokia store has announced that the preliminary delivery date is week 44 so it seems like we have to wait for a while.

Remember that the updates are OTA, so it could come out during that time, and not later. (Normally phones already manufactured before the final firmware is done have to be re-flashed before packaging, but Nokia might not do that).
The finnish operators say they will have the phone last or second last week of october. Usually this means retailers will have the phone a week or two before. (Retailers get first dibs). And Nokia usually release phones first or close to first in Finland.
I'd say mid-to late october is reasonable.
I wonder if Nokia delayed the release from early oct to late oct to build more devices & convert a few more production lines to the N900 because of how much more interest it has generated than what they thought?

talked to the hotline: they said, that this delay have nothing to do with different charges or caused by too much preorders.
nokia marketing should stop trying to hide theres a delay and come clean, I'm getting bored now of waiting.
anyone who's been following dates given by nokia knows its been set back by two weeks minimum.
its no good them saying we still plan to ship it in October when we know that is end of October now and not the start as planned.
nokia Italy eradicated any sign of dates and changed to just October, nokia Germany moved from 12th to 30th, nokia UK moved from middle of October to now November.

The order says nothing about a date, it only says "expected shipping date in 1 to 4 weeks" (I preordered on September 2nd). But the N97 mini also jumped from October 9th to October 23rd today.
I'm not surprised n97 mini date changed as the new vewrsion 2.0 firmware what normal n97 is getting as been delayed too and thats near identical to the firmware mini will ship with. so that all screams software problems to me

I found it very strange that almost all nokia sites has a delivery date, even if it´s not the same, but nothing on the nokia site in Finland.
It does´nt even mention any date when it´s going to be available, and since it´s the "home country" it should have first batch, or so i guess. You can check the site translated, hopefully a date will show up soon.

Unless Nokia releases a new press release, everything else is just speculation.

Yes, the information hasn't been changing, if you look at the original press release. I hope nobody expects us to react/respond to every time some internet site changes some detail date over when they will get their shipment of devices for them to sell. These country- shop- and site-specific dates can change for a number of reasons, every change doesn't mean a massive SW delay from Maemo side.

I thin the best course of action is to wait - and dont come and check thread every day or this forum for that matter (as everybody here WITH an N900 is on a NDA and hence nothing new to know and rest is all speculative stuff).
So much of wasteful speculation and frustrating discussions over rumours will just wear all out and bring on N900-burn-out even before we get our hands on the device.

I would agree with that. If you would "settle" for an IPhone, why would you even be interested in the N900?
Kinda Like Apple Users and LINUX users ehhh? And I mean Apple users pre OSX here. There was not much overlap between those two groups. Of course since Apple did UNIX that has changed.
iPhone won't cut it for me. I have no interest in it. I was interested and excited about Android till it came out and looked like nothing. But this is the phone I've wanted ever since I bought my first MONOchrome communicator.

Abso-bricking-lutely!! :D
Would that be the original 9000 brick?
What a piece of art!
I've been a Communicator user for over 10 years now (9000i, 9210, 9500, E90) and it looks like the N900 will be putting an end to this! Finally, a single mobile device, computer first, but makes calls too!! Thank you Nokia!!
Somehow I managed to fight the urge to pre-order and the more I see what the N900 represents, the more I think may actually be OK waiting a few more weeks...maybe.. :)

Yeah, it's long gone. I could have kept them all, kinda like a museum, but that's kinda crazy! After time though, I hated the clamshell. I always had hinges breaking. The N97 came out and I was skeptical of the longevity of that Rube Goldberg engineering. The slider looks to be more robust. I won't do any more clamshells though.
Funny thing though. I was thinking of ordering the N97 a few weeks ago and stumbled on the 900 which I didn't know anything about! There has been NO advertising about it. I broke out in a cold sweat just thinking about how unhappy I would have been getting the N97 and then finding out about the 900 later!

Speaking on communicator museums. I've got 2x9500 sitting here collecting dust. I've often thought about if it would be possible to put a light Linux kernal on that 80MB native memory and use a MMC card for storage. I mean in all reality its more a novelty than a practical portable wifi terminal. But I hate not being able to have them around to house in the kitchen, living room or whatever. Since I'm not real up on my TI Chipsets, does anyone out there have any thoughts on the ability to port Maemo to the OMAP chipset?
Thought this might be a more positive distraction from our collective depression about the N900 release date.

It's great to be the first to give an answer to this!
It's weird noone else has done already actually, this is such an easy one.
Well you see the UK version has a build-in bacon and egg making device and the american one shoots bullets out of the 3.5 mm jack plug. For the rest they are the same. Instead of the bullets and the breakfast making the german N900 has a big wall in the middle of the dashboard. But it should be broken down as soon as the new firmware arrives. :P
I have done research to this as well actually.
As far as my knowledge goes it is mainly how the keys of the keyboard are divided, plus what you already said, the plug on the charger. Input settings are all in the software and I have not read about different software per country, so that should be the same.
This is my first post as well as it was yours :)

one of the differences i see between the UK and US version is that one is Tri-Band WCDMA (900/2100), while the other is Dual-Band WCDMA (900/1700/2100)
Nokia's UK website is now saying expected delivery date of November. I was tempted to order one using Quidco and the 10% off... but I will stick to my original plan of waiting for reviews.

I would like to clear things up for everyone: US phones will be available between oct.19-30 and europe and other countries november 19th thru the 30th. My reasoning is this
from WIki:It was launched at Nokia World on 2 September 2009 and was expected to be released on 27 September 2009 in the United States and on 19 October 2009 in 9 European countries
SO as you can see clearly US markets are getting it first, since most of the nov dec dates are coming from euro sources, i suspect i am right.

Click on your name in the top right hand corner of the page. It should take you to your settings. That's how I put in a signature, but can't be bothered with avatars yet.

I considered buying a different phone. Several different phones, to be exact. I studied and explored each one fully, even to the point of trying out similar hardware just to get a 'feel'. I came very, very close to ordering the HTC HD2. It may be windows mobile, but it has a lot going for it out of the box in terms of history and apps that maemo doesn't. I the end, I rejected it on the grounds I disliked the hardware and it lacked the potential of the n900.
By all means question someone's reasons for wanting a particular phone (and which comes out sooner seems a rather silly reason to me) but don't knock people who've researched the market for having considered the alternatives. That's just common sense. Isn't it?

Umm, not flashy toy, a phone that is more powerful than anything that will be on the market including the N900, and by the way check out these vid's and you'll eat your words on the WinMob 6.5 because HTC has pretty much gutted the OS.

HD 2 hasn't even come out yet, and I'm going by specs alone, the facts are clear it's the first phone to have the Snapdragon processor built in, so a full 1GHZ not to mention ram, screen size and a totally overhauled interface . Oh and thanks for your comment about researching alternatives, it's funny to see people snap as soon as you say you're considering an alternative...very immature.

And that was one thing Engadget said, eventually you'll hit a few places where the WinMo show's itself, but it's a very small fraction, and I'm sure down the road, HTC updates will fix those.

The HTC HD2 does indeed have a wizzy processor and ram, according to the specs. The OS makes me a bit leery of that: every single new version of anything from microsoft I've ever had has come with faster speeds and more ram - because every incarnation of windows has needed that just to function. My main objections were to the capacative screen (I'd much rather work with resistive), lack of a hard keyboard (the device I played with I couldn't type on) and a rather low quality camera with poor optics v a Carl Zeiss lens. That and the fact that getting into windows mobile at this stage is climbing onto something that, even with version 7 due, is ultimately old and cranky, whereas maemo is distinctly newborn.
I don't want an n900 because it's new and shiny (well, I do but that's not my main concern!) but because I've done my research and decided it's the best option for me at this point.

Yeah, I totally agree with you on the last part 'best option for me', I don't just say well I like this because it's new, I compare and research just like everyone else ( it would be stupid not to when spending this amount of money ) I primarily use my phone for work i.e.email, word documents, graph's, etc, but I also like to throw allot of music, videos, games, etc since I'm flying all the time. So for me it's a like 50/50, I like the N900 primarily because I have other Nokia products ( E90, E71 ) and absolutely love them, I also have a 3GS ( which is fun for certain things, but not quite functional because of it's size and no actual keyboard ) which I'm getting rid of to help offset w/e phone I purchase next. I had a Moto Q along time ago, and didn't really mind the WinMo operating system nor did I notice any problems.

I won't lie, that looks like a REALLY nice device. But a device that thin, and that big of a screen, that has to eat up a lot of battery power! haha. I'm still keen on the N900 :) The full qwerty is a selling point for me. :)

A major drawback for WM is that it runs on a huge variety of hardware. No application developer in their right mind will choose to target a single device.
This particular Snapdragon will have a lot of free time on its hands (wings?) while it effortlessly runs what 90% of other WM phones can already handle. Shiny toy you'll have, but not software that can make the most of it.
I'd really like to see a healthy competition from WM, but we'll have to wait until WM 7 is out.

See the keyboard is a huge plus for me solely because on the iPhone I always manage to hit a different key then the one I intended but with a 4.3" screen almost one full inch bigger and after watching that vid on Engadget it looks like that problem would be solved.

Look at your last two sentences there. There are no alternatives to this phone IMO. If you think there are, this may not be the phone for you is what I'm saying. The iPhone and Windows mobile will never be an option to me. I used Symbian a lot in the past, but it wasn't the DEAL either. This is the DEAL, at least for me.
A polished Interface to an Open Linux platform on a Phone?
Priceless!
Not being able to do 3G Data on ATT?

Okay but that's you, not me or him. What you want need in a phone is totally different than from what I need or use it for, and thinking that what I said is wrong because it doesn't go along with your line of thinking or because I mentioned a particular product you dislike is very ethnocentric.

Very true, because the OS is on multiple platforms developers are usually going to want to develop for the larger audience. But since Windows Mobile can multi-task that just means you can use the additional horsepower for more multi-tasking.

What has Ethnicity got to do with it? You've arrived at a strange conclusion there! Seems to be a common counter attack though now a days, and usually constitutes the core of a weak debate.
My observation was that most Geek types on these forums who appreciate this phone for what it is would never consider the one you mention because it is Philosophically untenable to them, myself included. I don't care how big it's screen is, how shiny it is, how many bells and whistles it has, WM marks it as a big steaming mess.
I would never go out in public and admit to wanting to use WM, but that's me and how I roll...

No one mentioned anything about 'Ethnicity'...ethnocentrism can mean more than one thing. In this case it's quite clear 'believing your way or thinking is correct and everyone else is wrong', because I mentioned something other than the N900, and you come back saying and I quote 'Man, you beat me to it! Okay so that's your view, not mine, so because I'm looking at other phones, I shouldn't get the N900 because it's not for me??? You've clarified your comments now about your observation of why you said what you said, but at the time how was I or the other guy suppose to read your mind and know what you're thinking? It's done, it's over with, we should both move on...
I think we question your "research" etc and your decision to buy a phone based on the final conclusion because you basically said you were ready to dump the n900 simply in order to get the other phone sooner.
Now if you had said something like
"I think with this delay and with the fact that the HD2 meets the majority of my requirements I am going to go with it instead"
That would have garnered a better response. Your original post simply sounded like a spoilt kid saying "I am gonna take my ball and bat and go home, if I dont get immediate gratification."

And thank you for clarifying your thoughts, but logically I would assume anyone who is going to spend over $500 on an unlocked phone would do some kind of research otherwise how do you know if it correctly meets all of your needs? It's like my E90 and E71 ( although I did almost buy the E71 solely because of the steel back...it's seXy), if you look at the E90 and didn't know it has another screen and full keyboard or it's full capabilities you would probably think 'why do I want this brick because literally it's almost the size of one' but once you research what it has, can do, it's pure awesomeness--it's like buying a Chinese made clone for $800 solely because it look's 'nice'.
Anyways, I'm done with this argument, we've all made and clarified our points--there are more productive things we could be talking about.
