Thanks Sachin for the update. I just now placed my order. My friend is coming from US to India somewhere in the early of october. I hope, this reaches him on time.
I blindly chose Free shipping. Will wait for few more days before upgrading to one day shipping. One day shipping is only $15 though.
@sachin: thx a bunch for the update! that just removed all my hesitation about preordering now ;)

Saw this before when they didn't have pictures yet and it was fresh. I would have never checked back if it hadn't been for your post. Good thing because it is less than before and less than costcentral.com where I was going to order it from. Time to preorder!

nope
588 + 0 tax + free shipping

650 + tax + free bluetooth + free shipping

Well, that price keeps edging lower and lower on a device that hasn't even been released yet. Does this mean that it might still go lower later? The closer it gets to that sweet-spot of $400, the more likely I, and others from the recent polls, would more likely be willing to consider purchasing one, since the high cost and cellular radio were the major niggling points for me--and they seemed to be closely related. I doubt it'll reach $400 anytime soon, but dropping nearer and nearer does tempt otherwise disinterested consumers.
its just amazon, they almost always do this with new items

amazon did this with the n97 too. my friend pre-ordered it from there for about $100 cheaper. only downside was i think in the n97's case it was shipped something like a week later than from the nokia store. could've been random but only time will tell. i still pick amazon over nokia though (prime ftw).
I pre ordered but since I am in a taxable shipping state it came to the same price as a untaxed device... Hmmmm it's better than paying 730 nearly though...

I just ordered it on Amazon. Also, does anyone know if Amazon charges instantly or does it charge when they ship it out to you?
To further add to what Pushwall said, Amazon also has something known as the "Pre-order Price Guarantee". Basically, between the day you pre-order and the day they ship the item to you, you'll get the lowest price for the item regardless of the price at the time of your pre-order.
In other words, if you pre-order today at the price of about $590 and Amazon decides to drop the price further to, say, $530* for just one day, then $530 is the price you pay when the item ships out. It's a rather nice option. Sure beats having to cancel and reorder an item should you find out about a price drop.
*And in case there's any confusion, I'm not claiming any insider knowledge or predictions for price drops on the device. I was just making numbers strictly to demonstrate my point.
I have been an N900 un-booster for quite awhile, but this tempts me.
Is it really impossible for me to use any features of this phone with Sprint?
Yes, I re-read GA's definitive "This is a dead end" on this subject.
But I wish... I still have a year to go on my contract with Sprint; I guess I'll wait.

They don't mention their pre-order price guarantee on the N900's page though. Normally, when it's in effect, they promote it prominently. Furthermore, Amazon's pricing policy page (http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=468502#guarantee) does not mention electronics in the "Pre-Order Price Guarantee" section:
Amazon.com's price for not-yet-released items sometimes changes between the time the item is listed for sale and the time it is released and shipped. Whenever you pre-order a book, CD, video, DVD, video game, or software item, the price we charge when we ship it to you will be the lowest price offered by Amazon.com between the time you place your order and the release date.
Emphasis added.
In short, I would not count on Amazon's pre-order price guarantee for the N900.
i just pre-ordered and got taxed also but i don't care better than 700 or more.

What's the estimate ship date from Amazon?
I'm sure it would have been difficult for you to look on Amazon for this information. So I'll provide it:
"This item has not yet been released.
You may pre-order it now and we will deliver it to you when it arrives."
Just pulled the trigger myself. I'm also an Amazon Prime member with Amazon card so I get free 2nd day shipping and 3% kickback.
And Amazon does give you their lowest price up to 30 days after your purchase. I bought a 46" Sammy LCD there and got two refunds over the course of the next month as the price continued to plummet.
Damnit now I dont know if I should cancel my nokia order and get this instead. Starting to become a decent amount of savings now.
Even with the 3 year fairtrade warr.

Yes it is impossible unless you can bluetooth tether to a Sprint phone for 3G and/or use wifi for your normal communications (in which case, the "Sprint" issue is moot). This device cannot connect directly to the Sprint network as it is GSM-based and the Sprint network is CDMA.

I hope Amazon already has the stock and is going to ship it when the Nokia orders go out! How do you edit an order o change o overnight shipping?
I think it went down is this deal got put on slickdeals.net. When people there find out about a deal they gobble it up.
It seems the boy genuis report is also saying release by end of the month. If I remember correctly, this is what happened with the N97, reports of delay then it was released almost on schedule.

I remember receiving the same pre-order pricing guarantee on previous purchases for items *not* listed on that page. I followed up with Amazon because as you correctly pointed out, the page certainly makes it seem that the guarantee only applies to the listed items. Here's the reply I received:

Hello from Amazon.com.
I understand that you've contacted us as you'd like to confirm if pre-order price guarantee is available on electronic goods such as cell phones.
I believe I can explain this for you.
Yes, pre-order price guarantee is available on electronic items.
Whenever you pre-order an item the price we charge when we ship it to you will be the lowest price offered by Amazon.com between the time you placed your order and the release date.
Please note that our Pre-Order Price Guarantee applies only to items sold by Amazon.com, and not to items (or prices) offered by other sellers on our site.
I've included some additional information below. Thanks for shopping at Amazon.com.

The main condition to note is that the item has to be sold by Amazon.com, which is the case for the N900. My guess is that when someone wrote the pre-order price guarantee section, they were mentioning various items as *examples* as opposed to stipulating specific items that were covered on the guarantee. Methinks someone needs to go back and do some rewriting. :)
Yes it is impossible unless you can bluetooth tether to a Sprint phone for 3G ......
DUN is not included in the N900 out-of-the-box. Other thread discussions say that this won't be difficult to implement and that the Maemo team has started work on it.
It's sold out again.. up to #4 in Cell phone and services.
edit: it's back up again now. weird...

( i mean if it is made in finland in nokia store amazon sell it in finland or made in china ) thanks for ur help :)
its the same product you'd get from nokia directly, either online or from the store(where it is made i don't know)
with amazon you never have to pay the tax
both amazon and nokia are secure websites no worries there

Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the states of Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, or Washington are subject to tax.
If you were referring to the specific case of the shipping address being in Michigan...yes, Michigan is not subject to sales tax via Amazon orders. That said, if the item is being provided by a seller other than Amazon (and just using Amazon as a sales front), then sales tax might be applicable on a case-by-case basis.
It's climbing up the Amazon sales chart by the hours... it's now at #3 item in Cell phone & services category..

Has anyone who holds a Nokia pre-order confirmation canceled and re-pre-ordered from Amazon?
I was under the impression that you *couldn't* cancel from nokia (based on numerous reports of people trying to do so during the 5800 and N97 launches). At best, you can send it back to them for a refund (at your own shipping expense). Alternatively, I guess you could report your credit card lost/stolen before they charged it and do it with the sledge-hammer approach.
Was going to - but when everything was said and done.
$709 - BT headset, free shipping, phone and extra year of nokia repairs etc.
658 - phone, and 3 year warr,
its a wash
Today, I canceled my Nokia pre-order and ordered instead from Amazon. I have confirmation from Amazon.
For some stupid reason, Amazon doesn't ship to Canada for electronic... But i'm hoping that expansys-usa will price match them.
They say they need to price-match to people who have them in stock but this is a pre-order... should i just ask them to wait for amazon to show stock and price match to that price or what !? Sounds like a diversion to me...

Anywho, already put in my amazon order so I should be good to go....and about $120 richer when it's all said and done (I didn't need the bluetooth headset..already have a jawbone). That'll "learn" me for being so impatient hehe.

Not to mention Amazon has been on a pre-order sales thing recently. Where before release they'll drop the price down for people who pre-order and what not. But once the unit is out in the market, after the pre-orders are all filled. For the rest of the people who didn't pre-order and were planning on buying it normally they have to pay regular price.

mm so there is a possibility that amazon product be made in china and the nokia store one made in finland ? or they are 100% identical ? mm was the N97 in nokia store made in finland or china ?:eek:
My N97 was purchased from NokiaUSA and was made in China. So was my friend's.

Not sure about that. Lots of n97's for example are made in Finland. But quality wise I think it's the same. They use the same components and I bet quality monitoring standards are the same in every nokia factory .
I would hope so. There's an unwarranted stigma about products being made in China but usually it's the company paying for the manufacturing (Nintendo, Mattel, Microsoft, etc.) that sets the quality standard and controls quality. It's like Toyota cars being made in America, it's not the country that makes them, it's the standard set by the company that determines product's quality.

Yeah. It's more important to watch the principal brand that's responsible for design, manufacturing control, QC and packaging than the countries where the products are made in. I wouldn't be surprised if the components are sourced from half a dozen different countries to be assembled in China.
If someone preorders it from Amazon, how much he would have to pay for the taxes?
EDIT: I'm aksing it for someone who lives in US.
Thanks
@kopte: assuming amazon accepts your non-US credit card, ships to your country, and you're okay with their shipping fees... then the custom taxes are determined at your border. I'm guessing you can make calls (or visit) your local post office to inquire about this.
Please note that Amazon will include the invoice with product values and they will always state the full value in the custom forms.

No, it will be under 10%...our sales tax structure here is much less than the VAT common in Europe.
Thanks again. But then, maybe i should consider preordering it via Nokia store? It's 649$ with taxes and a bluetooth handset. 590$ + ~10% is almost the same. I don't know what to do now...

The nokia store's (I assume we're both talking about the nokia-usa store) price is $649 PLUS applicable taxes..bringing the total to around $700. It seems to be a roughly break-even deal if you actually want the bluetooth headset, otherwise I'd suggest going the Amazon route.

Well, for anything electronic that i add to my cart it says it cannot ship to my address... I'm in Montreal, would there be a problem here?
If you select the n900, add to cart and try to checkout, does it complain when you select the address? :)

Tom: I hear you on that but wouldnt you like to also have peace of mind knowing that you would be getting genuine product?
You: Sure, but I'm assuming Nokia is providing 'genuine product' to its channel partner Amazon. Is that not correct?

By the way n900 seems to be already #5 in amazon USA's cell phone sales ranking :)
Funny thing is if you click on the Amazon.com Sales Rank link "Cell Phones & Service > Accessories > Unlocked Phones" on the product page it shows the n900 as #1.
If you go to the "Cell Phones & Service" category and check out the "Bestsellers in Unlocked Cell Phones" in the right column the n900 is not even on the first page of results.

:confused:Amazon's listings never make sense. Try filtering by Prime Eligible and you get all kinds of non-Prime stuff. Try sorting by Price, low to high and you do not get them in any specific order. Amazon needs to take some time out from making Kindles and fix their storefront.

I wouldn't suggest it necessarily makes sense, but what you're seeing when you filter by "Prime Eligible" and getting non-Prime stuff is that the *lowest priced seller* isn't offering Prime shipping... but if you go to the product page and look at *all* the vendors, at least one of them will have Prime listed.
But they won't be the cheapest...

They will charge you the lowest price of the item during the period from when you placed your pre-order to the time they ship it. So, if it goes back up to $600 in the mean time, you have "locked in" your $582.99 price by having a pre-order already in the system during the time that the $582.99 price was active.

The ONLY difference in world regional models of the N900 is the keyboard characters.

The radio frequencies are GSM quad-band so voice and 2G data works everywhere.
The 3G frequencies are 900, 1700, and 2100mhz. Poland and GB both use 2100.

If you buy form Amazon you are buying from Amazon.com LLC. If you goto the help>payment, pricing & promotions section it says that Amazon.com LLC is required to charge sales tax to persons in KS, KY, ND, NY and WA.
That said I would assume that you will have to pay 582.99 + 37,89= 620.88
If you want expedited shipping layer that on top, 5-7 day is free.

I'm about to order this baby from Amazon but I have a few final questions for customer service before actually placing my order:
1) Estimated shipping date since all distribution centers are supposedly getting them in Sept 27th.
2) Will the US Version have the front-facing camera or are they removing this for us?
3) Is the US Version made in China, Korea, or Finland? (Just personally would appreciate the phone more if it's Finland lol)
Once I get these questions answered today hopefully I will post back here with my findings.
---------------
Called Amazon.com and they put me on hold for about 10 minutes and here are the answers I got:
1) US Version they will be selling are made in China
2) There will both the Primary and Secondary (front facing camera) I was doubting the front-facing camera but it will be there!
3) They said the retail sale date is still undetermined but will be sometime in October
When I called MobileCityOnline they said the following:
1) Not sure where the phones are made until they actually receive the boxes and see what the boxes say
2) Retail availabilty will be October 18th as to the date when they will have them in stock and ready for sale (such a longggg time away)

I saw webpage also from twitter. So I called NokiaUSA and they told me ship date is still mid-October. I asked several times about delay and the CR plainly stated "no delay as far as I know sir."
After one day, I haven't read anything official yet, so I guess it is just a rumor. Let's hope it doesn't turn true.
I just called Nokia USA the other day to find out courier service used to ship, that's fedex by the way, and asked about the ship date. The rep told me no later than two weeks into October. I dont know if it makes any difference but when i asked she put me on hold for about two minutes and then gave me that answer.
Here is a response from Amazon on the HSDPA band issue:
How many ATT customers can you dupe in 4 days?
I disabled 3G on my 3GS to see just how bad it is and well it definitely got much better than when I had a 2g and after I upgraded to my 3g. I dint know if it's because of the omap3 but pages load pretty much as fast as when I'm using 3G. Im looking forward to purchasing this device after I sell my 3gs to finance it :D

It could vanish from pre-order because all units assigned to Amazon USA by Nokia were pre-ordered. Taking pre-orders now would mean big delays for those clients. Bad PR for Amazon.
What about our preorders? Are they still active?

Why would they stop selling if demand is high? I think they would just start making another batch and take the orders and ship them on a first ordered first shipped basis.
For them to stop taking orders is very strange...unless Amazon needs a product to be avaialbe to ship within a certain amount of time before they will allow pre-order, and now it is beyond their allowable time frame due to a delay or something so they have stopped taking pre-orders.

Not really strange - since pre orders from Amazon are not coming directly from nokia but rather a 3rd party - who may have a limited supply

Yes I know, but they are a for profit organization. Mo' money is good right?:p
I would think they would mark it "out of stock." This would drive demand even higher.
My assumption is that they don't want people ordering right now because of the inaccurate radio/carrier information in the product description. If too many AT&T customers buy it, get pissed about the lack of 3G and return it that would suck for Amazon, too.
The page with pre-order buttons is back and looks unchanged to me.

True, but Amazon can only sell as many units as Nokia sends them, just like any other online or physical retailer. So there's no point in taking pre-orders for guaranteed on having the product within the first week if you don't have the product to send.

That's anyone's guess given Nokia's history with pre-orders for these kinds of things..

They're getting closer. Although the carrier compatibility chart is still wrong I think they are listing the correct WCDMA frequencies now.
And the pre-order button is gone again.

They've changed the listing at Amazon. You can no longer preorder, and there is a compatibility chart that says it works with AT&T 3G and not T-mobile's. Strangely, it does not come up on Amazon's search. I found it by way of Google search. Here it is: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002OB49SW

Because it is likely that it goes along the lines of: Nokia sells certain quantities to Amazon by means of a purchase order. Amazon can then place an expected stock amount in their inventory so that they can sell pre-orders.

True, but remember when the iPhone first came out it didn't have that many either. This is a new path for Nokia and giving them time like we did for Apple I think will reveal pleasing results--plus the fact that it's based off the Linux system there are already a ton of apps...
As far as 'lack of popularity', I don't see that. Amazon sold out of there entire pre-order stock, Nokia USA has record pre-order sales for the N900 as well and thats just the US market. With the amount of buzz going around the cell industry I think people are really eyeing the N900 as a potential iPhone competitor and/or killer. Nokia was once a really great company and the past six years or so not so good, hopefully they have found that edge again they originally had.

Ignore it, they are probably last on Nokia's list to get the phones or something. I think enough people have proved that the release date is going to be mid Oct. Remember logistics are a *****, especially when a new, HOT product like this comes out.
EX: If a company lets say were to call Nokia and wanted to carry the N900, it's going to be behind whatever companies came before it on when it receives it's products from Nokia, unless it's in a market where Nokia doesn't have any other retailers.

You get the cheapest price that the phone is listed at when it ships to you-- so if you pre-ordered it for $649 originally, you'll get it for $582 ( since thats it's current price ) and in addition to that--the first thirty days after your phone ships out if the price goes down during those thirty days Amazon will refund the difference into your account. It's Amazons price guarantee, plus in addition to that tooo... :P if the price goes up, you don't pay the higher price, because when you pre-ordered your phone you locked in the price from going any higher, but if it goes lower you get the difference. It's one of the main reasons why Amazon gives me a hard on.
I know first hand of the price guarantee, when I purchased my Samsung LED tv from them within the first ten days after the tv arrived, I had one refund for $10.46 then another one for $85.97. :D
You get the cheapest price that the phone was ever listed at.
Just a slight correction..
I think you get the cheapest price of the item listed at AFTER you've placed the order. So if the item has been offered at a lower price in the PAST before you've placed the order and the price has been raised since, then you're not eligible for any of the lower prices before your order.
So if the $582 was last week's price and it's been raised to $588 and you've just placed your order today (and the price raises from here til release), you won't get the $582 price.

They don't price match, it's only applied if Amazon lowers the price noone else. It's why sometimes you'll see products on Amazons own website in the retailer list and yet Amazon is more expensive but they still list cheaper alternative retailers. So if Nokia lowers the price on there website from $649 to $550 within the thirty days but Amazon keeps it at $582 you're stuck with that $582 unless Amazon lowers it's price. It's a weird system they have, but it works for the most part and it's what keeps people coming back.
;)
I meant to say 'cheapest the item was ever listed at when it ships'....
Right... from the time you place the order til it ships. Not quite the cheapest price amazon has ever listed it at :)
I think they also have a 30 days price protection guarantee that takes into effect from the day your item is shipped. It's not automatic afaik, you'll have to check the price listing and file the request manually if this happens.
I think there's a site that offers to watch your item and emails you if this ever happen. I'll have to look it up, cause I don't remember it off hand.

I contacted Amazon for the official word on availability and price match. Here is the response:
ME:
Regarding my order for the Nokia N900, Can you please give me some idea as to a ship date? I've heard October 12 and was hoping you could confirm.
AMAZON:
"Nokia N900 Mobile Computer Unlocked Cell Phone" hasn't been released yet and the expected release date is not known. We'll make sure to update our website listing when we know more.
==================================================
ME:
Additionally, since i've place my pre-order, the price has been adjusted down somewhat. Will Amazon be adjusting my price to reflect the lowest price since my pre-order?
AMAZON:
Regarding the price of the item. Whenever you pre-order any item sold by Amazon.com, the price we charge when we ship it to you will be the lowest price offered by Amazon.com between the time you placed your order and the release date.
However, if your order enters the shipping process before the release date and the price is lowered before release date, we will automatically refund the difference between the price you were charged and the lowest price between shipment and release date.
Hope this helps someone here.

I got the same email
:confused::confused::o:o:(:(:(
I just want my phone...
I sold my unlocked iPhone 3G and sent it away yesterday to offset the cost of the N900--I'm back to using my E90 but I really, really want my N900...I have dreams of the N900, rubbing it's curves, it's sexiness, it's beauty...oh yeah!

In case any one is curious I got this email from amazon about 30 min ago:
Hello from Amazon.com.
Thanks for ordering the Nokia N900 Unlocked Cell Phone/Mobile Computer. When you placed your pre-order, the detail page incorrectly indicated that the phone will work with AT&T 3G within the United States.
The Nokia N900 only works with T-Mobile 3G within the United States. If this wasn't what you expected, we understand if you'd like to update or cancel your order. You can make order changes here:
Maybe now they are clearing up any loose ends and getting ready to ship...
