View Full Version : Turn by turn directions on the N900?
Hi
I can see the N900 has Nokia Maps, but does the N900 provide turn by turn directions?
If it is something that you pay a subscription for, is it possible to transfer a Wayfinder map licence on the N810 to the N900's Nokia maps?
And finally is there a planned car suction holder for N900 GPS naviagtion?
Rich
I am hoping that the answers for all of those questions will be 'yes'.
Ovi Maps should provide turn-by-turn navigation same as the Symbian version.
Very doubtful licenses will transfer between Wayfinder and Ovi maps since they are owned by two different companies (Vodafone and Nokia).
Plenty of third party windshield mounts that should fit the bill.

Beware that every source says that there's no voice guidance in the packages we get when eventually we'll buy the device. Only routing, i.e. written and drawn instructions on how to get from point A to point B.
Thereafter, who knows...

No. Verified from Nokia Online Store.

So, another step down from the N8x0 then? Android looks more appealing all the time (coPilot is only £26)

It'll come to the platform though, I think thats a certainty.

Is this really true that there is no turn by turn directions? I thought that the implementation of Nokia Maps was the same as the s60 version where you get navigation for free and routing for a license fee?

It is true, at least at launch.
Not sure what the problem is, my guess would be that the license payment system/license database/etc stuff isn't ready for Maemo yet.

Yes, and I wonder how will it be based. Like Wayfinder, on time/date coming from the GPS chip?

As certain as video Skype calls coming for N810 or perhaps slightly less certain? :)
Well, I think they might come eventually, but seriously, nobody should buy the device thinking that it will later support something they need that it doesn't at launch / time of purchase. It's pretty clear this device is not the "end point" of Maemo phones for Nokia, so it would not shock me if some of these missing features will only come to later Maemo phones.
Ranting a bit, sorry, but here I go: it amazes me that they are launching a new type of "flagship" product that's so advanced in many ways, yet doesn't even match all the standard features of the previous high-end phones. Not that the features are so important, really, but not matching/exceeding previous features is strange.
Especially MMS is such a basic feature anyway that it'll be very hard for many people to understand why any other plastic 150 € Nokia phone can take a pic of your beer and send it to your friend in the other bar and this one can't. Let's face it, that's the only use-scenario for those messages, isn't it? :) Still, many people like those messages, they should be in.
So let's not explain away its shortcomings by "it'll get it later". These things should be available at launch and there's no guarantees that they will come to this phone at all. Hear that Nokia? I want my beer pics.

it was also mentioned on the www.my-symbian.com site that while it currently does not give the voice-guided nav. there voice files are there in the system. so it looks to be able to on a different firmware.
with all the videos showing, you can tell there are different versions of the pre-released firmware on them.
Michal from my-symbian stated that there are firmware updates that show up weekly in the folder, but he has not sent in his unit to get the update yet.
my guess is that HOPEFULLY by the final release it will be included. however, it will not be the end-all if it is not. firmware releases are very much so available today then they ever have been.

If Maemo Mapper and Flite (voice synthesis program) will run on the N900, like they do on the earlier NITs, then there will be turn-by-turn voice navigation, and for free at that. (Maemo Mapper and Flite each have their limitations, like no detour re-routing, which you can read about elsewhere.)

There's nothing stopping you from sending beer pics. You just have to use one of the many other options other than MMS to do so.
Skype video calls were never promised or announced. Talk to Skype about that.

Sending such pictures is of course no problem. However, the point is that your mate in another pub (or at work :p) would likely not be able to receive them.
MMS, although not as popular as SMS, is nearly as ubiquitous (at least in the UK).

Yes. But the beer pics MUST be sent and received by MMS. It is stated in the definition of beer pics that me and my pals have. ;)
The rest of the world may ofcourse disagree on that.

well I just read on twitter that the N900 has third party software in the works for Voice guided turn by turn navigation.
http://www.allaboutmaemo.com/news/item/10738_Sygic_turn-by-turn_navigation_.php
Yep, it looks cool. It is discussed here (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=34409)
Really I am so amazed that Vodafone and Nokia who operate across the world have missed a trick with Wayfinder and the N900. Specially in the UK.
1. Vodafone acquired Wayfinder
2. they have exclusive license in some markets for N900
so why not port it over... the revenue stream for very little development should be attractive enough.
looks like Ovi Maps Turn by Turn is ON THE WAY
(not sure if its a reliable site)

I am hoping this is true so I can completely get away with my N95. It is pain switching sim cards every time you need navigation.

Hmmm... Reading that softsailor 'article', it credits electricpig as the source which in turn leads to an old Jan21 article which pre-dates MeeGo. Searching electricpig reveals no article citing a Feb 25th news conference.
I think it's bogus, again.

yeah would be great if it wasnt announced three months ago for january release and now nothing
its nearly 2 months late and no explanation at all , ive emailed customer services twice and just got an automated reply
not at all impressed with their customer services / customer relations so far thats for sure
makes me think would it be worths spending money on it if customer services is that great when nokia maps could come for free soon anyways
I dont think we would have choice if you want a gps really 100% commercial working gps like sygic, unless you want to stuck or dont mind using the lousy ovi map or others still developing gps software that you can find it here..... but to Wait patiently even months after months without notice.
Too bad other gps company like TomTom, Garmin, Copilot, Igo, etc... not available on our N900. :(
Yes, turn by turn should be standard for a high-end device 2010. Free or not free!

good news
Can some one confirm or not if Nokia is going to give us turn by turn?. This is the biggest slap in the face for a phone that when it hit the market cost £500 hard earned pounds... I don't understand why this phone has been dropped from such a great height, even now I'm still learning about the thing and everyday it seems to bring more goodies to my eyes...
Nokia get your fingers out of your A** and give us what we have already paid for!!.
The Iphone and Android have there maps... how stupid do we look!!!! You have the technology, it wouldn't take this long if you knew you were gonna give us what we've paid for so come out and say it... There wont be any turn by turn...
Loz.
In short, No there wont be.
Long answer: We have been waiting for this for almost a year now, even after nokia announced that they were going to "drop" support for the N900.
You may want to look into some of the alternative MAP apps iavailable.
Forget ovi maps, IMHO they are nod very good and incomplete.
I just bought Sygics Mobile Maps and am very happy with them. I would say they are worth the money I spent.
If you want something easy, that works straight after installation, then move along, nothing to see here... However...
If you want turn by turn with voice, support for Garmin maps, OSM, and maybe others, the ability to do route calculation off line, POI's, bookmarks, and on and on, then take a look at Navit.
Latest armel build is 3684 (17 November 2010) which works well for me. You'll need to hunt around to find working XML config files, or spend a few hours tweaking the defaults to your liking.
You can find it here (http://www.chollya.org/navit/)

gave sygic mobile maps10 a test run whilst driving across the uk and out of london last weekend, im very impressed, i expect ill be putting down my 40 euros for it when the trial runs out, when it comes to turn by turn navigation with voice im prepared to shell out £35 UK for a quality app like this rather than despeately try to find a free solution that might end up being more buggy and time consuming to get working. Everything else on the n900 im happy to mess about with, navigation app ill take a polished product.
Yes we feel like nokia owe us Flash10 and Turnbyturn but time has shown that we aint getting either and theres not alot were going to be able to do about it. no massive love for nokia for that but they never promised either and its the device were here for not the corporation that made it.
Shell out for sygic imho (and mention flash10 n900 suport when you pray :p)

the app called GeePS interfaces with google maps and is loads better than ovi maps it does need to be online but i'll give u sat pics as well as turn my turn - unfortunately it doesnt read them out so it aint too useful
I already have the sygic maps on my phone and yep the trial is up.... very good though it was it crash once on a run from Ipswich to Brightlinsea... that wasn't good as I was right on a major roundabout when it froze so I had to take pot luck..!!! I checked out the price of the upgrade.. this as I worked it out was £28 ish. Me thinks I don't have a choice... Thanks for nothing Nokia...I feel well cheated.
