September 27th (yesterday) was the original US shipping date reported by Nokia US weeks ago.
Whether you ordered from them, Amazon, or another vendor, has anyone in the US received a shipping notice or update for their N900?

Nothing yet, pre-ordered mine from amazon, but have not gotten an email from them yet.
Also pre-ordered from Amazon but no news, yet. It seems that updating the order status every 15 minutes does not speed the process along.

This may be pedantic, but just for clarity... September 27th according to The Nokia Blog and BGR's reports is the estimated time of arrival to distributors and not necessarily the ship date to customers from distributors...
All right... continue excitement and insanity in anticipation for shipment. :p
Remember to breath people. :D

My order status from Nokia USA says that it is "in progress". I have no idea if that really means anything different from what everyone else is getting.
Considering that I have not gotten any other notices, I am assuming that it hasn't shipped yet.
Amazon.de - 9th Sept - nothing :(

That makes no sense. First of all, they never gave a concrete release date. Secondly, releasing something before it is ready will do more damage in the long run than letting people get their grubby little mitts on it early and they did not ever say it is ready to ship. Thirdly, this was never announced as a mainstream device for the "unwashed masses" that will be banging on the Nokia Flagship shop's gates to let them in or queuing like lemmings for days ahead. Must always remember that people like us here are the minority. Hell, even iPhone users are a very small minority - even if the press often pretends otherwise.
Now, when an official announcement comes in with an actual release date, we can hope they stick to it ;)

I actually agree with this one, because before I found out about the N900, the blackberry storm 2 had my eye. Then I saw this, and fell in love with it! I had been following the BB Storm 2 for about 2 months, every day reading the leaked information, pictures and videos (much like I do now) and then I got tired of reading about how it gets delayed and such, and how no confirmation date was close...
This ISN'T The case of the N900, unless it gets pushed to november(ish). My birthday is in november! I want this BEFORE my birthday :P I want to be an agile N900 user by then!
Oops, I'm off track. Anyways, I fell off the S2 bandwagon because they took too long and I got too hyped about something that wasn't released or even close to being released. That's all.
Guys, your tablets are unfortunately not going to be shipped today, tomorrow or the day after. I would wait until at least after Maemo Summit or a week or two after before getting antsy about the shipping date.
I know you're excited. I know the wait is excruciating and seeing all those videos on Youtube is absolute pain. It's coming... just wait a little while longer.

Any chance we can merge this with the other thread. no real need for a new thread
I heard Nokia held a press conference indicating N900 will be delayed for about 60-90 days due to some hardware problem. Anybody heard about this also?

This is classic. China at its best.

Re: NOKLA & Chinese knock offs..
Wait a sec..
Correct me if I'm wrong, the worst part about these chinese knockoffs is the software. The hardware range from s**tty to slightly above average, but priced REALLY cheap and usually packed to the brim with unnecessary features (TV tuner, dual SIM, etc).
Imagine the day they start to put Linux on these devices...
When we can flash something else (Mer?) on them and make use of sub $100 cellular devices to do our biddings :D
Markosib
2009-09-29, 10:54
Slightly off topic but I concur! We have here an open source operating system after all. As it stands the Chinese already assemble all manner of hi-tech gear that we happily consume. It's only a small leap for them to take now before we see no-name Chinese designed products equal to, or better than those branded ones we now enjoy. They could add MMS! A four and a half inch capacitive TS! Four rows of keyboard! Etc, etc. Believe me the quality will be there.....and all at quarter the price! I say "bring it on"!
Schimmel
2009-09-29, 11:27
and all at quarter the price! I say "bring it on"!
Offtopic:
Yeah... and look at the dollar and/or euro plummet to the very bottom. Do you really think there's nothing strange about the fact that all these chinese people are building all these tiny devices and toys 12 hours a day, 7 days a week with little to no pay?
I really don't want to get too much political here, but this greed leads to a loss for us all. Goods cost a price. That price is what labour is worth.
Nothing personal... it just bugs me a little when I read such statements.
Markosib
2009-09-29, 12:16
I take your point and raise you one! China and the Chinese people are very resourceful....they will do this, they will do it well and it will bring them wealth! Without their burgeoning economy its likely we would still be in the economic doldrums here in the West. Their developing economies are absolutely necessary to us and to them! Greed? I don't know. More likely a levelling of the playing field. Would you deny them this?
Perhaps this deserves another thread?
it will bring them wealth!
no it won't.
very few will get rich, but the vast majority will continue working as slaves.
china currently being the world's economic motor is a bad thing for many reasons. foremost the fact that other countries will slay personal rights and labour rights to match those of china to stay competitive.
i am really very worried that what happens in china right now might be the future fate for the rest of the world as well. it was an important and unique achievement to found the UN convention for human rights, and it would be devastating if that got undermined by economic factors (which basically boils down to greed).
the truth is, many people (especially in the US, but also in spain, the uk etc.) have lived over their means and plummeted into debt. the fact that labour is so cheap in asia, and the fact that china was happily assuming american debt are the only reasons the world economy kept turning. the crash should have happened a lot earlier, and the way it looks now, it's only been postponed once again.
but i fear that when the final point is reached, where nobody will buy any more state debt, we will get chinese circumstances everywhere else, too.
sorry for going offtopic, but this is a very important subject to me :)

2009-09-29, 13:05
.. it will bring them wealth! ..
and because this wealth is away from highly debted USA, who will then buy the products? if china produces all the products in the world, where will rest of the world get their cashflow? there has been a hole to get an elephant thru in the way outsourcing has been thought before.
and i'm sorry too for this offtopic.

Does anyone know if it is normal for a hold on credit card funds to be removed and reapplied various times? I pre-ordered through Nokia and the hold was placed on the funds of my card and a week later it was gone then it showed up again, and checked today and it is gone. I called nokia but the rep had no idea, he said it should stay there until the phone ships. The last time it reappeared I though It might be shipping but now that its gone it took that thought away quick.
Afaik they are only allowed to reserve the amount for a certain number of days and have to release it after that unless they charge you.

I got mine today, But I'm a Nokia PRO developer, so it was thru internal channels. It looks like a full retail kit. The FW is pretty damn good. One crash in 8 hours, and the offending app is closed, a log file is generated and sent, and you continue on your merry way. Only one of the five repositories is up yet, so very new updates and programs. The build quality is spectacular. and the screen is great. Too soon to report on battery life. MoE, NokMess, Skype all work well. Camera has 'issues', but expect that will be sorted.
I talked to nokia USA directly today and the lady said it will be available mid october. You can call for yourself and ask.

If you are talking about Video chat on Skype - then go complain to Skype to update their Skype client for Maemo.
It depends on where the problem lies. If there's an issue with the OS integration of the webcam hardware, major suckage will ensue.
Application-layer bugs are not such a big deal to solve - people have been happily video-chatting for years.

There just is *NO* mobile skype client with video support out there. For any platform. Please walk on by now, there's nothing to see here (literally!).
The Google stuff worked with video even on the N800.
I don't care whether I use Skype or whatever - all I want to know is "can I make webcam video calls with the N900?"

awesome :D I can't wait for Nokia to finally confirm MY shipment! I want this device sooooo bad!!!! I can't wait to try the keyboard.
I also got the email from Expansys asking me to confirm my order or let them allocate it to someone else.
I placed my order when their website had the mistaken $199.99 price. Because I live outside the USA, Expansys wouldn't process my credit card and they asked if I was willing to pay by bank transfer. I replied yes, and immediately received instructions to pay $314.94, including delivery to Trinidad and a $30 "wire-transfer fee". So I paid.
I have replied to Expansys saying I have already paid and asking them to ship asap. I have no idea what will happen next. The Terms and Conditions on Expansys' web site refer only to correcting pricing errors "before payment is processed". My payment is already processed, so maybe I'll be lucky and get a bargain.
Somehow I doubt it.

The N900 KBD is MUCH improved over the N97. Still only 3 rows, but the 2 extra columns make a HUGE diff. Big adds are the unshifted comma, and the Blue-alt key moved to the right. Off center space bar still weird but I fear I am getting used to it.

In The IM framework is Ovi, Skype, Google Talk, and Jabber. Most of these (if not all save skype) are built on the OMA Open IM standards. I assume that other will come, but not sure of the route. The framework makes it harder for people like NimBuzz to make a living my adding a a full client, as the client is already there - you just plug in the plumbing. And there is no money in plumbing. Maybe the AIM and YM guys will do it, but again without a client to show adverts, why would they bother? Maybe Open Source to the rescue, but some of these protocols have to be licen$ed. hard nut to crack.
I also hope Expansys will honor their own rules in dormant's favor.
He has paid in full, long before anyone else and by expansys' own admission, it's already an agreed price for the item.
@dormant
I have no problem wishing you the best of luck. Regarding whether you were intentionally ripping someone off, I think that Expansys is much worse - they advertise one price, orders come in and then they more than TRIPLE the price to $700 - more than the price on the Nokia Store- classic bait and switch. The only reason they are going to get any orders at that price is because someone didn't see the email from them or because someone is reluctant to be pushed to the back of the pre-order line and so doesn't cancel and switch to the Nokia store. I think that they should be slapped with a class action suit, and I certainly have no problem with them actually honoring a sale.
@Hogwash
You can already do that with the n800/n810 sort of. With Google chat (granted it's terrible quality).
Well....(a) I don't have an n800/810 and I'm not going to buy one...and (b) if the n900 hasn't managed to figure out how to do good quality video chat then I'm canceling my order - it is a primary driver for my purchase. A showstopper.

I don't get how anybody is saying that he is trying to intentionally rip them off.
How many people did the preorder when the price was $199? A bunch. I'd imagine. By the logic being used, all of them were trying to rip Expansys off. |||EDIT http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=31031 |||
He just lucked out that they have a funky pay-the-f**k-now policy for people in Trinidad and Tobago.
If anything, they were the greedy ones.
If you see a price of $199 and go for it, that's fine. If they turn around and say "that was a mistake" and you insist they honor the price, you're a thief.

Maybe you should reread the situation, because obviously some part of it went over your head.
He did the $199 preorder like many others.
The difference is, most of the others got contacted saying that the price was incorrect. Rather than telling Dormant that, they said, "Pay us ~$300 now and you'll get your N900."
There was no haggling / argument involved. They charged him, he gets it for that price. It's that simple.

True, meh, that means having to run an extra program like Pidgin, shame it's not likely for AIM and YM and other popular messaging platforms to do standard IM.
Though in an ideal world they would implement a basic IM client through the framework and then create their own application for audio/video chat where they could then display ads or whatever makes them revenue.
Well....(a) I don't have an n800/810 and I'm not going to buy one...and (b) if the n900 hasn't managed to figure out how to do good quality video chat then I'm canceling my order - it is a primary driver for my purchase. A showstopper.
What I meant, is that if it was doable back in the n800/n810 on Maemo 4 it should be doable on Maemo 5 with the n900. Especially since the camera is even better I would expect the video chat would be better. So while we may not have video Skype (though right now nobody has mobile video skype..outside of laptops) we can at least use Google Talk. The only reason why I mentioned Skype is because when you say video calling you think Skype.
If you see a price of $199 and go for it, that's fine. If they turn around and say "that was a mistake" and you insist they honor the price, you're a thief.

No. It's not that simple. If a mistake was made in the advertised pricing, then he should pay the correct price or reject the transaction.
He has no right to the anything before the transaction is mutually agreed.

True. Skype is the big dog it would seem. However....google voice/video chat doesn't work on linux yet. Showstopper.

At what point is the transaction "mutually agreed upon?"
IMHO it is when the retailer charges your credit card.

Hmm, I thought someone here had got it working. (http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=55785&postcount=4). Though that was only n800 -> another internet tablet. So not so useful if the other person is using a PC.
There's also Gizmo 5.

I actually tried to honor the full price of some steak in Tesco (UK), but they were to afraid of legal action - I was forced to pay the lower price, even though it was morally dishonest to do so.

What a waste of thread.
Sorry if there was some confussion, I didn't mean to imply that dormat was trying to rip people off, only saying that I'm not privy to people's thoughts.
Regarding whether the sale need be upheld, I think this is an issue of contract law. The relevant rule is that mistake is a defense to contract, but bad bargaining is not: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mistake_(contract_law). Expansys made a guess about what price they could get N900's at and they also insured 99% of their contracts with language that said "we reserve the right to change the price before we charge you." Dormant was the other 1% not covered by that rule since they forced him to pay early. Now Dormant gets to take advantage of his business savvy, it's no more dishonest than someone who sold oil futures at $150/barrel shortly before prices plumetted to $38.
From Dormant's description, both parties had to jump through several hoops to make this transaction, a reasonably prudent person would conclude that a mistake should have been caught somewhere along the way.
Dormant is on the right side of this thing ethically and legally.

absolutely agree. And to add to that..there is a difference (morally and legally) between "theft by deception" and simply profiting from someone else's poor business sense/execution. Dormant's case is the latter from what I can see. An example of the former (and one for which Hogwash would be rightfully indignant towards) would be switching labels on an item and then demanding the price rung up due to the switch be honored. While one could justifiably hold the vendor harmless for an honest mistake in pricing and say it was, at the very least, unethical to pursue the completion of the transaction....decades of abusive companies who operated via bait-and-switch tactics and outright false advertising have created both a legal and ethical framework that favors the consumer in the U.S. The onus is on the company, in most cases, to provide correct pricing information in both advertising and at the time of sale lest they open themselves up to the legal scrutiny of consumer protection laws. They know that, we know that...since everybody knows the rules ahead of time there is no shame/immorality in playing by them.
The final nail in the coffin is, of course, when Expansys actually accepted payment for the item at the agreed upon price. Game, Set, Match.

It is kind of a waste of a thread to have a bunch of no's. It would have been more helpful if responses were in this kind of format:
Retailer purchased from
Date purchased
Payment method
Have they charged?
Extra payment steps?
Purchase, payment, or shipment issues?
Delivery option and courier
Date of shipment
Expected time of delivery
Destination (i.e. state)
Actual delivery date
And then people can edit their post whenever there is an update to their order.
This was really helpful during the N97 release when BrightPoint botched a lot of NokiaUSA pre-orders (they were systematically canceled) in which case I had the opportunity (I only say opportunity because a discount came out around the same time my order was cancelled) and I got to re-order. But I would not have known which number to call or that they systematically cancelled the pre-orders had it not been for a thread with this kind of information.

I got my extended warranty for my N810 after I received it, from http://www.squaretrade.com... it was like $30 on a $220 item for 3 years with accidental damage included.

As far as I knew, Nokia Care is only offered by Nokia themselves. I am guessing you would have to find some sort of equivalent extended warranty plan that is offered by say Amazon or wherever you decide to purchase. But you can be sure you get an extra year warranty by using a credit card that has that extra benefit like American Express. My buddies bank credit card extends warranties on purchases by 2 years. So jealous..

Well I placed my order on Buy.com in February (during the backlog) and received it in April. I bought the warranty the day I received it.
For items purchased from online or offline stores, you can purchase a Care Plan to protect your item as long as the item was purchased within the past 90 days AND still has at least 90 days of manufacturer warranty coverage remaining.

Already asked, and no they won't. As long as you purchase the extended 3 year warranty before your 1 year Nokia warranty expires you'll be fine. The 3 year warranty no matter what, starts from the day you get your phone so technically after your Nokia warranty is up you only have two years extra. Just read the fiine print and it'll explain it all.

The N900 KBD is MUCH improved over the N97. Still only 3 rows, but the 2 extra columns make a HUGE diff. Big adds are the unshifted comma, and the Blue-alt key moved to the right. Off center space bar still weird but I fear I am getting used to it.
Well, I don't have any real problems with the N97, but when I did play with it (one of my friends works at a phone store, hence me being there all the time just to play with their phones haha) and the N97 didn't offer enough tactile feedback. It reminded me a lot of the Xperia X1, but the xperia had a worse keyboard than the n97 (depends on what you're talking about).
As long as I can type without having to look (after a few weeks of use) then I'm good to go :) I believe aside from having a decent layout, it's necessary to have GOOD tactile feedback and be able to spot-type without looking. I have the Blackberry Bold and I can't complain, great keyboard. I'm looking forward to a larger keyboard (like the N900).
I'm sure I can get used to the space bar and the period key's location. :) Time! :D I want my N900! Lol. Nokia is kind of slow :P I don't mind waiting as long as it comes out in top notch condition :)

Well I ordered mine on 02/09/2009 14:52 CET still with the same status
"This order has not shipped."
The only information that I've seen from Nokia (Peter@maemomarketing)
is that it will ship from select markets from October.
This means that some people in Germany and Italy may get this from October onwards. (as these were the defined "select" markets I think)
The UK Nokia website states "Tentative delivery date: November 2009. "
So all we really know is that it should ship sometime, we don't even know for certain whether this is this year or next year.
Whilst I think next year is unlikely, we just have to painfully wait with no idea when the product will actually ship.
Obviously I'm hoping to get mine soon, but not got a clue when :-(
Just ordered mine from my local box shifters (http://www.brack.ch/Default.aspx?TabId=294&ID=116655). Delivery said to be around the middle of November.
Hey
A Danish Telephone company called CallMe, have now got it on their site. They are saying 30.October sadly :(

N810 can video chat with Linux desktop using Empathy with a google account. I've had it working, albeit Empathy didn't make any notification sounds, only a flashing icon, though I think newer versions of Gnome/Empathy now include Empathy sound notifictions.

Got an email from Amazon USA reminding me for my pre-order that the phone does not work for AT&T 3G. Nothing about shipping
I called a phone shop here in the Netherlands and the guy saw in their system that it's expected in week 43/43 (19 okt - 1 nov).
This lack of communication from Nokia is really starting to fudge me off. This is no damn way to run a company, especially when we are paying premium prices for the phone.

Apparently for "people who are familiar with Nokia" this is the norm.
Not that that is a helpful comment, but essentially we are all in the same boat.
I just hope the device is as good as it looks, in which case I'm prepared to put up with it, as it's not like there is currently an alternative for me (a few that are close, but not close enough)

Nope there was a tweet a couple of weeks ago saying it was still on track for Mid Oct. Since then the date on numerous web sites has jumped around like a cat on a hot tin roof.
@Bratag: Right, the official line is that they'll have it available in mid oct, and that's still 2 weeks away. None of the big boys respond to street rumors afaik and they don't email each customers on daily basis to let them know about the latest ETA either.
You can b*tch when it's passed Oct 20th and there's still no official update. Til then, let's just sit tight and be reasonable.

I don't actually mind waiting. What I hate is the fact that we are left to speculate because Nokia simply will not come out and give us an official release date. Lets assume we are still on track for Mid Oct. Thats less than 2 weeks away and we STILL dot have a release date. That just strikes me as BS hedging so they can change the date and claim "Well we never gave an OFFICIAL date"

Regardless of how it strikes you, it's all speculation until we pass Oct 20th no?
Let's just wait and see. I'm not happy with it either, but I do not find it beyond reason. I was hoping to have it before I departed for Spain this weekend, but c'est la vie.
It's a semi experimental device.. it's no N97 (in terms of OS track record, captive market and general maturity).. we've been hearing of mixed accounts of problems with different stages of the prototypes (the ones given out to various reviewers).
Just give em time and give yourself a slack. I know how we can be impatient when we're all hungry.. but don't blame the cook for not following our own timetable when they're trying to make the best in the kitchen :)
Pah, you young'uns ain't seen nothin'. Some of us here are old enough to remember waiting for our Sinclair ZX81s and Spectrums to arrive. The tales I could tell about "28-day delivery" ...
Just let me fetch me liniment and I'll tell ye all about it ...
Using twitter and whatever is not the kind of professional behavior I expect from a serious organization like Nokia.
They should have an 'official' delivery estimation on their N900 product page, below the preorder button. They should email updates to their preorder customers - Amazon can manage to do this.
Although I think the world of Nokia and their superb technology, the failure here is one of poor management of customer expectations.

Calm down hogwash, Qgil (Nokia employee) noted a LONG time ago that the N900 was not going to be released in time for the summit. I think the people going to the summit are mostly aware of this fact.
It looks like you just recently joined the forum so I can understand you not knowing certain things. People expecting tablets to be released before the summit were setting themselves up for disappointment.
Nokia said shipping in mid october in select markets at Nokia World and until that doesn't happen you shouldn't overreact.
As for IM protocols maemo can do pretty much every IM protocol and there is community work being done on facebook, twitter etc plugins with release date in the next month or so.
So they intentionally booked the summit before people would have their devices? How backasswards ;)
Yes, I'm a new member, but I've observed from afar for some time. i made the jump as soon as I ordered my N900....I'm committed to developing software for this platform :)
Oh the poor folks who get to go to Amsterdam and play with the demo N900s that they will have available. You're right to feel sorry for them.
;)
If I'm hauling my arse several thousand miles, I don't want to be timesharing some greasy monkey-fingered demo device. Sure, people make the best of the situation, and it'll be nice to meet folks, but still....it reeks of shabby organization to me.
But WTF, I'm not going anyway....Amsterdam is a cool place - be sure to ask for the 'special' menu in the coffee shop ;)

Sales tax (if any) is set by the states, so it varies. For me, it would be:
$582.99 (Amazon price with free shipping)
+ $34.98 (6% sales tax)
= $617.97
I'd only pay $582.99 on the purchase now though, as Amazon doesn't collect Pennsylvania sales tax. When I pay my state income tax at the end of the year, there's an accompanying form upon which I can report all the online purchases I've made so I can calculate and pay sales tax on them.

Oh, yes! The state can't and won't check into the accuracy of what, if anything, you write down, of course, but everyone fills it out fully and honestly because it's the law and the right thing to do.

Hey,
is there anyone who got his n900 in hands?
I've ordered it on amazon in september. There is no mail until now.
Anybody who got it?
Ordered: yes!
Shipped: No!
499 euros = $730 !!!
Whats that go to do with anything ? Are you showing off your math skills ?
Its not like the N900 sells for the direct USD converted amount across the seas as what it does in Euros in different markets.

No, but it makes for one helluva comparison. Relatively speaking, you're parting with a greater chunk of your working-life's effort to pay for the thing.
I don't pay any tax for my Amazon purchase...so $583 is the end-price to me ;)
Now also showing up (http://www.toppreise.ch/prod_178841.html)on leading Swiss price comparison website: Cheapest price is about 475 EUR (seems too cheap), all others are slightly over 500 EUR. No availability noted anywhere.

I wish it would. I'm paying 600 euros, which is WAY more than you guys will in the US :( It makes me sad. but ohh well, I'll get a kick as phone direct from Nokia Spain :D

Lol, i still have my bluetooth from my arte, maybe I will use that with my N900.
I feel bad for the folks going to Amsterdam for the summit - it's a total fustercluck that they won't have their devices to play along with. In fact, it puts such a dent in the experience I'd probably cancel.
So they intentionally booked the summit before people would have their devices? How backasswards :)
Yes, I'm a new member, but I've observed from afar for some time. i made the jump as soon as I ordered my N900....I'm committed to developing software for this platform :)
Good thing you didn't book yourself for the Summit, or you'd probably cancel, and that might put a damper on your commitment to develop for the platform. :D
EDIT- I perceived your cancel comment above to refer to cancelling the devcie you ordered, not the Summit trip. I suspect I am mistaken.
It's usually good to see new blood in the forums, although if the blood comes from the back of Nokia as you remove your new N900 from it, one has to question your expectations on how your relationship will grow with Nokia given the angle of atta, er, approach you've taken with them in the relatively short duration of your TMO existence. Not all bridges are made of steel.
I truly do appreciate another developer coming on board the Maemo ship. I think we'll all be directing our energies at more positive conversations once devices are received.
Hogwash... lol... yeah, go ahead and cancel.
Making such rash statement without the facts... how's that working out for ya?

mmm....
I was thinking of going to the summit, as I would love to meet the Maemo guys and get some face to face advice, but it does put a damper on it not having a device yet, and I have other stronger reasons for not being able to go (which is a real shame).
I don't think you could argue that it is bad timing, but it is also possible that this is due to a slip of the release date.
Both do have to be planned long in advance, so it's not impossible that the desire was to have the release before the summit...

I think the N900 is a few weeks away still. My-Symbian reports they are in the process of adding 2 more gigs for apps before shipping. My guess is they are simply displacing some of the 32gb of onboard memory, but regardless, this means there are currently no devices on route to consumers.
If they were actually adding 2gbs more memory to the device, that would obviously be a while before shipping- a long while.

They're not adding 2gb more memory, they're just lifting the restriction on how much space the application can use on your device. It has nothing to do with changing the hardware.

Apparently, kingofgadgets.co.uk have received a note today from their distributor telling them the device was pushed back to around october 20th. Until now they were expecting it to arrive october 8th.

totally mishandled in my opinion , the release of this phone and the booklet 3G as well though not in topic here.

I don't think Nokia would mind charging you a little bit more to add more memory, of course. What do they care about? If it were popular enough, they would bend over backwards to make a phone that EVERYONE wanted and costs 10,000 dollars to build. Their business is to make a device that's desirable enough, mass produce to make it cheap enough where the price enters into a demographic of people who want it, and can afford it, and try to make the fabrication as cheap as possible. They're in the business to make us happy. It's another story to make us happy at the price we want!
Why am I ranting? Ohh yeah ,because I want my N900 to be shipped last week. :)

This should be the same case with any manufacturer. But then why only Nokia is doing this (N900 and also giving importance to open source and the community). Because, apart from doing ONLY business they also CARE. That's why I (rather WE) like them.

Europe is also getting N900's in mid to late october. The woman with whom I talked to seemed informed enough. As soon as I said "N900" and "EXPECTED / ESTIMATED" she said "Yes, I can't give you a DEFINATE date. but the ESTIMATED date is Mid October to LATE october, but of course, these CAN change... to up to december, but we're hoping to ship in October. Anything is possible. They're just protecting their *****es. If they say "It'll be shipping Oct 19th" and then it ships the 25th, you KNOW that SOMEONE will complain and they'll get problems and headaches "for breaking their promises." So their BEST bet is to say "around" or "estimate" so it says "It's coming soon, hold your horses! GAWD!!! I HATE ANSWERING THESE QUESTIONS! But anyways, it's coming soon. I can't tell you WHEN ... but SOON. S-O-O-N! SOON! <hangs up> Nokia, how can I help you? ..... N900 WILL BE OUT SOON!"

That link said 'flagship device', so is Nokia finally admitting this will be there 'flaship' device because the N97 failed horribly?
hey, it's sunday and I need some new rumours :)

Guess what...I called today this biggest tech shop in Czech (Prague), called Alza, coz they list the N900 to be available from October 20th, even though Nokia Czech hasn't mentioned officialy any date yet. They told me they have the date from Nokia Czech itself. Now, that's not the best part. They said they will be selling the unit with an english qwerty keyboard (all 4 arrows), but with Maemo 5 localised to Czech. To cut things short, that means:
a) we will have the option in Czech Rep. to choose what version of the phone we want to get (with which keyboard - english/4arrows or czech localised/2arrows)
b) it's starts selling here October 20th, but Nokia are keeping it low on purpose and making it a surprise for now
:D
btw, it will cost $879 in Czech with all the VAT, etc.
"...Nokia are keeping it low on purpose and making it a surprise for now"
Suprise! We have a delay! :D
I hope you're right. ;)
Formerly for preorder the estimated shipping date was 12. October on nokia.de, now its 30. October :(
they will cut arrow keys to get up to a usable set of characters?
they cut too many keys. the new qwerty keyboard is sub optimal. there is room for a few more keys, i dont agree with their decision.

So October 30th for a shipping date directly from Nokia still makes sense. A smaller retailer might get the device a little bit later.
I just noticed that maemo.nokia.com has a new web browsing video

What bangbang tech say I think is possibly true, but misleading.
We were told that the n900 would be available from select markets from October...
However bangbang tech is a uk site (given the .co.uk amazon address), and the UK I seem to remember isn't one of those select markets.....
And it's the Nokia.co.uk site that has the tentative delivery date of November.
So I think they are just confused, like many others when the actual release date is, as we actually haven't been given one as such.
Of course maybe that's all wrong and I will get my n900 in October which would be well nice :-D
