View Full Version : What will YOU do with your N900?

Hey guys! I was thinking this morning on how powerful the N900 is. I mean, REALLY powerful! 600mhz, 32 gigs of memory, 256 ram, and a dedicated graphics chip. OK. It's powerful, all right. My question is:
What will YOU do with such a powerful device? What will YOU do with this phone, that you can't really do with other phones? Or why are all of you picking up this device, and not the N97 or the touch pro 2 or whatever other phones.
:) as usual, Kent.
I'll hug it and squeeze it and call it george ;)
But seriouslly... In my case most of that power will go to running VPN, SSH, jabber, mail client

Oh, and connect it to TV and do all of the above! :D
I am going to spend the first few weeks trying to break it. Grabbing down linux programs I love and trying to cross compile them to work on the phone.
Tuxracer anyone?

gonna make a phone call? duh!

LOL. I'm thinking about if I really need this phone (which I don't. All i'd REALLY need is a phone iwth a number pad to make calls). I'm a heavy texter and instant messenger. I wonder what else I'd use this phone for?
Music
Videos (watching and recording)
Pictures (taking)
Email / IM (very heavy on this)
I'm not a big gamer, but if there are some good games available, I'm game.
and that's it. I'll make phone calls too, of course. Lol. :)

Mostly my usual work stuff - emails, accessing several corporate websites (I.e. 'portals') general browsing, about 15-20 phone calls a day.
When I have time I'll just play with it, see what it can really do. Can't try and break though, I'll need it too much.
IOW, pretty heavy daily use.

well, im picking it up, because i simply really like how it all turned out...
day1 i will be playing with it, adjusting things and that kind of stuff...
then i will fill it up with videos, music, pictures... then i will install some apps and games...
mainly i will be using the phone for multitasking, doing multiple things at once, just like on the pc (right now i have 26 tabs opened in Firefox, a movie downloading, songs playing and several windows open too)..i will be using the browser, IM client, playing videos, playing music, playing games a bit, widgets, reading documents, SMS, phonecalls...sometimes i will use the gps, fm, camera too...
i just like to have everything i do need and everything i might need, in one device with me on the go...
I'll hug it and squeeze it and call it george ;)
I was gonna say that:D
I'm a doctor, so this is going to be my primary device if I can. My notes are done on a web based system, so I'll use it to do notes and order meds online (Actually worls best on Explorer, so if anyone knows how to put explorer on here let me know). The usual stuff email, phone and texting as well.
The only down side is that because it is a new OS that not all developers have apps for, I'll also have to use my Ipod Touch. I have most of the apps for medicine on there, like Epocrates, % minute Clinic consult ont here as well. I must say that I think this is where Apple excells is those darn APPS. They are like crack. The phone itself is ok, hate the browser sometimes.
This pphone will replace my Sony X1 (Would have kept it if they had a better browser, more internal memory, and faster), and Iphone 3G(Already sold on Ebay).

I will :) but the main reason I'm getting it because it has very well integrated 24/7 on IM, Exchange email or IMAP IDLE push. It has a slider qwerty and it's def. a beautiful phone. It looks like it's FUN and it's "futuristic." haha.
The applications I'll use on a day to day basis:
Gtalk / WML plugins (when available).
Email
Camera (for pictures when I don't have my REAL camera on hand)
Music & Videos.
It's a communication device for me.
My notes are done on a web based system, so I'll use it to do notes and order meds online (Actually worls best on Explorer, so if anyone knows how to put explorer on here let me know).

OH HELL YES!!! Thats pretty damn awesome, especially the tie in with the wiimote.
If there's any office software which is designed for touch than traditional mouse+keyboard , that will be great .I need to deal with office files on daily basis , which is the main reason for me to have a decent laptop . If we call Nokia N900 is mobile computer , touch design office is needed to be worked out . Other than that , most of my daily work and personal stuff can be resolved with N900.
The other thing is battery life , do not make me bring two extra battery with me for a one day heavy usage . I got the feeling that we might need that amount of spare batteries when final release .

Wake up:
Check emails, calendar for the day
On the way to class:
Listen to MP3's through FM transmitter, or tape adapter. Maybe even stream some internet radio for the drive.
At school, in between classes, downtime:
Update calendar for homework, tests, events, etc.
Listen to more music. Check MP3 blogs for new tunes.
Read the news.
Check facebook and IM friends to make plans for the night.
Play some games.
Update / post things on my website.
Download some entertainment via BT for later.
In the evening:
Take pics with friends, upload immediately to flikr / facebook / etc.
Take video of drunken friends, promise not to post it, then post it.
At night:
Skype / google talk with friends in other countries.
Watch a soccer game or movie in bed while I fall asleep.
CAN'T WAIT! :D
Thanks. I'll start looking into it. Most importantly is it free?

currently it is free.........
I suspect that in the near future it will become a pay emulator. they have intentional program timeouts right now. you can use the emulator as much as you want but the history has been that the emulator stops functioning about 3-7 days after a new version comes out. I think that they have a date timeout feature built in to the prog and they keep up with their planned releases.
Has been working flawlessly for teh last 8-12 months no crashes with heavy usage and the ability to store the data file off the emulator on the memory card. this make the emulator footprint on the n800 relativily small mine is using only 16 meg of main mem and the data is all out on the internal memory card. I havent noticed any slowdowns......
for comparisson I feel (not having done any stopwatch tests) that the n800 is 25% faster than the lifedrive for changing programs and looking up info from either the reader or epocraties.

My primary motivator is to have a highly portable video chat device so my family around the world can see my daughter growing up. I can chase her around the garden and house with my N900 beaming the footage wirelessly. That's gonna be cool.
SSH remote admin of servers is another useful ability.
I am also into developing GPS application software.
Hopefully I'll do everything I do on my laptop now (except play EvE).
Which reminds me, time to set up irssiproxy and my own xmpp-server... :D
Internet radio in the morning then Corporate stuff .Mail for Exchange, check emails, todo's and calendar. Open office attachments.
check the news sites on the way to work. Stick my entire music collection on the device, 32GB just about does it, but may have to leave a few albums out that dont get listened to frequently.
During the day us liqbase to take notes and doodle in meetings, capturing all that mind matter stuff that flows in a creative moments.
Sykpe the Mrs to tell her I love her and build up some points. (she has skype on her E63 with a free Internet access). That way work dont pay for my personal calls, cause the data plan is bundled.
weekends photos and vids of the kids and family and upto flickr will be cool.
late at night when I cant sleep, the bluetooth headset and a surf to see whats going on in the rest of the world.
What will I do with my n900?
I'll do something that I have so-far failed to do at several attempts.
I will consolidate the information on my PCs, laptop and phone so that I can work seamlessly with all of them.
So have you found any web beased programs. I know Epocrates can be searched online.
i haven't found anything i like, i might just go back to using the good old tarascon
i will check out the palm emu though that epilido mentioned
i'm not gonna wait for epocrates to port their software over, they didnt want to do it for android i doubt they'll do it for maemo
sip calling it is fun being in a apple store anywhere in the world calling free using voipcheap and having no roaming charges (currently doing this with N95 on travels and Siemens Gigaset @ home)
i would like to play movies stored on another upnp device (popcorn hour) through the n900 hooked up to the tv (lets see if this will work)
use it as a phone ;), email system and web browser for on the go or on the couch

What will i do with the N900? See if it function in the same way as a PC with the same efficiency and whether it is much easier and convenient to use than a PC. Test out everything...see if the browser is fast or not on
3G and wifi compare to a PC browser. See how good the camera recorder is....and how effective is the GPS system. See if there is an app that simulate the album scroll of the iPhone and see if there is apps for AIM and Yahoo Messenger; how effective is push emails. See how useful the radio transmitter is. See if the screen is responsive or not and if i need a screen protector. Just basically test everything out.

The original post that asked people to contribute to the ourMaemo YouTube experiment is here:

If you watch the video, click More Info and you will see an email address. Supposedly, if you send a video there, it will appear on the channel. If it doesn't work, just PM me and I'll help you out.
As for editing... That's not really the point of this experiment. I'd just like a number of people to post short quips about what they think of Maemo 5 and the N900 and how they'd use it all. Maybe editing could be reinvestigated later.
Thanks,

I will sleep with mine, cradle it, love it, fondle it...
One thing I'd really like is MAME emulation, but I'll be using it for:
multiple messenger services (will MSN and Yahoo messengers be available?),
IRC (is that available?)
skype,
emails,
taking photos (I don't have a "proper" camera),
listening to music/podcasts,
Games/emulation
it'll probably be my main browsing device,
showing off n900 multitasking goodness to Apple zealots...!
Making phone calls. I get 3000 off peak minutes :)
when i get mine i will probably install as much stuff as possible,
then month later i'll work out i need hardly any of it, then i'll revert back to mostly default apps :p
its a common theme with me and new gadgets :D
These are the reasons i will get N900 no matter what
1)My E90 got stolen
2)It has linux maemo with telephony integrated and the way everything is integrated in the device is just gorgeous
3)I will use it as music player, to play and store ALL my music collection. I usee eAAC+ format, 56kbps parametric stereo indistinguishable from FLAC format. I currently have 5.5Gb (2933 music files) with more coming up next as soon as i figure out what is the max resolution of the displayed album art in the music player to embed my aacs with that precisely resolutioned album art
4)Will use it to play video, converted movies, i will create entire collections of movies with embedded subtitles in english optimized for the N900
5)Take pictures, videos, make calls, use it for instant messaging(yahoo messenger and the likes), the multiple calendars is something i wished i had for a long time.
6)Document editing and reading
7)Games
8)Navigation and communication when i am abroad (world clock and wheter very helpfull), for instance this christmas i'm going to italy, i'm from romania, hopefully i will have the N900 by then.
9)And most importantly, and one of the main reason i got sick and tired of the E90 is the limited capability of the web browser.
I have been looking for ages for a mobile device with full browsing capabilities and after some digging i reached the conclusion that the only mobile devices with desktop like browsing capabilities are those that have windows instaled on them, like the OQO. This is not true now with the N900. Fenec looks promising. And besides 1gb of ram on this machine in my opinion is more like 2gb of ram on windows XP, which is a relief, i wont have problems browsing multiple web pages and using mutiple apps
10)I am used to having tons of apps opened at the same time, and i don't like closing them. Even though E90 has 128 ram, it seemed insufficient at time. This will not be the case with N900.
11)I will buy it because it's the only nokia devices with quality autofocus camera qwerty(which is a must for me) and 800x480 pixel screen, even better than on e90, and what's even better, i don't have to "open" the devices to make use of the high resolution screen.
12)The "expired certificate error" drove me batshit with the symbian phones, no more with N900, and toghther with the freenes of the linux platform makes for a quite powerfull combination
And that's about it, can't wait to get it.
If you mean Internet Explorer, then there is no way to put that on a N900.
It will probably be way too slow, but maybe IEs4Linux (http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Main_Page) could be run on the N900.

It will probably be way too slow, but maybe IEs4Linux (http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Main_Page) could be run on the N900.
Not easily. IEs4Linux is simply a quick and easy way of setting up Wine to run Internet Explorer. Wine then translates Internet Explorer's Windows x86 calls into Linux x86 calls. That's really quite cool, but doesn't help much on non-x86 Maemo devices.
For the N900, you'll need to insert an x86 emulation layer, and at that point, you might fight fewer battles by simply putting Windows on top rather than Wine in a virtual x86 Linux system. Either way, it probably will be "way too slow", but that's not to say you won't earn some geek points for pulling it together.
Windows 95 (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=15893) and Windows 3.1 (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=22014) have been run in emulators on the (much slower than the N900) N8x0 Internet Tablets, but there's still time for you to be the first to boot XP on a Maemo device. There's likely an Engadget mention in that one.
IRC (probably ssh to the box running irssi+screen).
All the usual mail/web/calender stuff.
Some EBook reading, some games, some im and voip calling.
And hopefully, if the battery is good enough (or if I can find one which is) as GPS for walking and cycling trips.
And, if I find the time to do so, some experimenting with mobile IPv6, but changes are I won't find that time ;)

I'll use my N900 to follow news of the N1000.
Oh, and alarm clock, RSS feeds, email, web browsing, creating/editing documents, presenting workshops (with projector & perhaps a BT remote), listening to music, and trying to port a few pieces of audio software. Basically moving everything from my laptop to the new device, except my audio production software. That'll have to wait for Maemo 6+...

Hi.
I didn't find any post regarding this so... here it is. :)
My question is very simple. In what ways will you put to use your N900 (when you get it)? Of course, other than just phone and text message...
Here is an example:
My wife doesn't like it very much when I am at home and I'm at my pc "playing" (ordering my downloads, programming, etc...) and we have visitors. So, I'll use it to do all that in a kind of secret way. :)

It's not exacly the same. In that thread it's questioned what will you do that you can't do with other phones. I'm questioning what will you do other than using is as a phone and text messaging.
If you will play with it, well, iPhone can do that so you won't write anything there but you will here. :)

ill do the same
I don't think it really matters if there is a similar thread, everyone is excited the N900 is coming out and that is looks awesome and this is what I like to see on the forums... excitement :)

pictures/videos of said child
email/web/IM etc ( Mmm, new baby to deal with, choice of 17" Laptop or 4" phone ) :D
bit of gaming, bit of music, bit of anything else I find that works for me.
learn typing with 10 fingers. i never had time at home for that.
see if the touchscreen reacts to my tongue.
watch some porn in the bus/train (probably useless to state the obvious, which is having the speakers on max per 'accident')

yeah.. thats probably it.
oh and i like photographs. i really wanna take some nice pictures. create an archive. Hope ovi suite is good for doing that.

Yeah and duplicate posts. But man... There are so many posts in some threads that are repeated and we end up with a thousand pages of oh look the preorder button is buy, oh no the buy button is preorder, oh no it was a bug, or a billion replies about how someone can't wait any longer, or how they would put up a fit if they don't get it on the date they chose, or some posts where they repeat what other people said because they don't bother to read prior replies or it seems people want to make an idea someone else said theirs in which case the thread becomes pretty useless and eventually spirals off topic.

no need for that. charging battery for starters is so 90'ies ;)
(battery should have bout 40-50% charge when taken out from box)
I posted this in an average thread  but wanted to put similar here too:
I am going to:
- run with it to work on the trails around here and keep training log (e.g. on MapMyRun) - eCoach is a start on this but doesn't quite do what I want, yet. Working on my own solution (see coding below)...
- use it as a research tool for a project I'm working on
- take notes in meetings and on the plane/train/whatever
- review papers and write reviews
- edit my own stuff on the fly
- write and give presentations/lectures when at conferences, etc.
- play games on it when bored
- call home (Skype for preference) when away
- get where i"m going in a different country or part of my country
- listen to music, watch the odd movie
- code on it (this is exciting, it's been a while since I did
- use it as a docreader
- get frustrated with it
- show it to people and get them excited about their own possibilities

True, but I believe if you drain it before charging it then it will take longer to reach its full capacity. At least the manual always recommends you fully charge the battery before use.

I will charge it and configure all my email and voip settings. Then I will find as many desktop widgets necessary to make it feel like a home I can snuggle in. Then it shall snuggle in my pocket :)

I'll plug it in, turn it on. If it turns on, then charge it, while configuring. :)

Why would you want to run IE anyway. Its like taking a Bugatti Veyron and strapping a dump truck to the back of it.
Some may not want to, but maybe they have to...
I hear some people are locked into using IE for work-related web-stuff because of activeX (or what's-it-called) components that are not available with other browsers.
When i get my N900 i will spend a few days learning how to use it (my first maemo device coming from s60), then i will study how it all works, get apps i need/want the start modding the cr@p out of it just like i do to s60, hope its easy to mod things like icons, startup screens etc etc.

With luck, Hartti Suomela will soon post the slides from his "Personalizing your Maemo 5 device" (http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_Summit_2009/Day_2#Personalizing_your_Maemo_5_device) talk. One of his slides listed the system paths to most of the files and directories useful in customizing the OS.

What I'm gonna do with it? Everything I can't use my laptop for :D
For instance:
-IM & E-Mail access 24 hours a day
-Web surfing
-PDF viewing (at uni, mainly... just lecture scripts and stuff like that)
-Ebooks!
-Maybe watch some videos or listen to some music - although I've got a decent DAP for music and I don't know if I could really get into watching videos on such a small screen...

Welcome to the forum!!!
I think that one of the first things I'm going to try and do is see if the Flash-based pbskids.org site will be usable. The OLPC XO is almost completely incapable of this, I learned to my and my daughter's chagrin. Anyone with a device willing to give that a try and tell me the results?

I can almost guarantee it's not going to work... pbskids.org uses a mix of flash and shockwave, the latter of which is not available for linux. Making shockwave work on x86 hardware requires wine + windows firefox + mozplugger (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Shockwave) to embed the windows version of shockwave into the linux firefox process. It's an ugly hack, and won't work here.
I think I will use it for:
- On device Python and (if possible) perl development/scripting
- Ebooks reading
- Web surfing
- Listening music
- Taking photos
- maybe notes taking

Once Nokia gives birth to this phone...I'm going to adopt it into my family of Nokia devices. After which, I'm going to give it a name (USB profile that is...) and then I'll let it rest, let it gain its strength from such a long journey. I'll feed it with electricity as it rests. After the awkward hello's its off to a bitter life of slavery... :o
If my gadget history is any indicator, I'll treat it with kid gloves, always put it in the case, have one or two days of enjoyable use... then somehow drop it or scratch it, or some other form of damage will occur. Hopefully it won't be as bad as my N95... I dropped it in a parking lot and broke the screen! 1 week after buying it... I didn't even have a data plan yet!
Use it every day, on school and at home. Use it to simplify my life. Play games on it. Watch internet pages. But I think I wait 'till the N1???, so it's a bit irrelevant to say what I'm gonna do with the N900...

How about the first thing you do is... insure it.
For me: I will hug it and squeeze it and call it George.

I am reading this thread and wonder sometimes about posts. But let me write my answer to the question.
Basically I will treat N900 not like "Internet tablet" but as a Smartphone. I tried to use 770 and n810 and the software most of time did not allowed me to make it fit for me.
So first days would be probably full of bugzilla work. I played with Maemo5 for maybe 10 minutes in total and already have a list of few things which needs improvements. It contains Contacts, launcher, lack of portrait mode and few others.
For me N900 will have to replace my Nokia E66 Symbian based phone. It will be hard job. I expect:
- SyncML synchronization over the Internet for PIM data
- IMAP4 offline capable mailer which will make a use of screen resolution (no less then 10 emails in list view)
- Calendar with Agenda view
- Widgets for calendar, birthdays, todos
- one place to disable/enable roaming for data
- navigation with routing
- time defined switching of profiles with running applications on change of profile, enabling/disabling bluetooth
And few other things which I will list on my blog in next week (have few other posts to write there first).
I am sure that it will take few Maemo5 updates to satisfy half of a list and that I will have to life with it or try to write my own apps for that. Time will show. I know that for start N900 will be degradation not advancing.
