Hi
Sorry if this feels too simple a question, but those of you who have had the pleasure of playing around with N900, could anyone confim or give any detail about speed dialing? What I am looking for is the one press speed dial that was very nice on candybar form factor phones. Just one press of a button, longer than normal typing of course, and the phone would call a preset number. Is it possible to make a call with one single press/click from the desktop of n900? Official specs list speed dial as a feature but the US manual that was linked to (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=32333) in this forum mentions nothing about that. Not a dealbreaker for me, but would much appreciate any extra info on that.
Not quite speed dialling as you describe it, but you can put contacts on your desktop which you'll be able to phone with a couple of clicks.
it would be a nice feature if the contact desktop shortcut would function as follows:
1 tap: call
tap and hold: whatever.
2 taps: whatever.
I think 1 tap should be as it is at the moment (brings up the contact 'card', allowing you to choose to email, IM, SMS, phone, or just to look up their address or birthday). A long press could be defined to do the user's preferred action, e.g. phone, email, etc.

brainstorm time
For the target use case, the current setup is the best especially since IM is expected to be used heavily by users.. but lets see what you guys come up with.

This would be SUPER cool!

Pelago, yeah I know the contact icons, I was wondering how they behave with long press. And the long press action first of all should be there and yeah it would be really cool if it was also user definable

in the nutshell, a symbian equivalent of speed dialing is not available. the desktop shortcut is not an option if you want to easily and quickly make a call with one hands. I miss having the ability to easily call my 5 contacts from the dialpad. This was a core feature in S60 and its absence on the 900 is disappointing.
is it possible/difficult to write a custom Phone app?

Unfortunately, it turns out that long presses aren't allowed on desktop widgets so this won't be possible.

uff, very disappointing restriction.

Yeah, disappointing "feature" indeed. S60 dialpad speed dial was really really nice. too bad, but I guess I just have to get used to a bunch of other missing/differently implemented features.
A speed dial feature is something i miss aswell
This maybe has been discussed already, but i'll give it a whirl anyway.
It would be sweet if it was possible to directly launch a call from the contact widget on the desktop.
I miss this while driving,a lot of tapping at this moment(yes i know,no calling while driving),just texting :D
Now its at least 3 clicks from locked screen.
1 click on the contactwidget and the phonedialer launches would be nice. And when the call is over you return to the desktop.
Then it would be possible to have a desktop for just driving.
Maybe some sort of script and the possibility to attach an image of the contact. Or an app of some sort.
Can't do it myself though due to lacking programming skills.
I just wonder if its even possible?
Probably a noob question....:o

Yes agreed that a contact dialer would be great. I know the N900 is a internet tablet, but if you include a phone it ought to be easy to dial whilst we work in our cars. Time in the car is the best phone time ever. easy to do the call backs etc. I would pay for an app that allowed a simple tap and go... I do realize that each contact has multiple actions associated with it. but this ought to be exclusive.. tap a dial vial mobile network..... thanks
There is a very good app/widget for that functionality thanks to the effort of Fellipe Crochik. It is not tap, but double tap on contact's icon that gets you dialing it. Desktop widget can hold up to 75 contacts in 5 groups and supports portrait mode.
