View Full Version : Here's a new N900 video, I haven't seen before
http://conversations.nokia.com/2009/10/05/nokia-n900-in-depth-plus-maemo-browser-tips-and-tricks/
For us that still haven't fumbled with the N900 yet. :)
To watch a HD video on youtube via 3G wasn't the most intelligent thing to do in a sort-of-marketing video, i suppose?
it was an amazing thing to do actually.
that browser coped with HD video better than my desktop ever manages.
and if that is not to taste remember this: if its that good on HD, consider how it will handle SD.
Thanks for that link bobby68, that's a really nice video.
It shows off the capabilities of the device without resorting to hype.
Roger
Indeed. Fun to watch and they did explain the browser capabilities really well. Showing some known flash apps to compare with your desktop.
Myself I was amazed that it can handle desktop tower defence. It's not really lightweight flash in any way. :)
Does anyone know if the browser has smart keywords like Firefox? In my opinion they're one of the greatest usability improvements since tabs.
Not familiar? See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JlMeach_t4

I wonder what happens if one clicks on the full screen button on a youtube video... does it behave the same way as in a desktop?
flash brings my quad core 64 bit linux installation to its knees... hope the n900 wont die a horrible death

does flash 9.4 supports HD? I think you saw the HD in title but it means you can watch it in HD if you'd like and if you have a newer flash player?

I hit it accidentally while playing around with it in the flagship store, it opened as full screen but since there was no ESC-key to exit full screen I figured out some other way to exit.

For the first time I noticed, it says "N900" on the front instead of "N00"... looks like this might be some close-to-release device
That was a great video and I am impressed with how well this system handles both browsing and multi tasking.
That's a good vid it performed well over 3g connection they were using as well....

Interesting video.
As usual, I'm concerned with performance. Scrolling normal sites appears to be fine (but worse than iPhone), but some Flash content is specially slow.
Youtube seems to stutter a bit and the game they showed seems like a slideshow. Not sure though as I've never played that one.
It seems like many people here think it's fast. I don't. :(
The Youtube videos performance could probably be solved by playing them in the media player (VLC anyone?). Flash in Linux is painfully slow (even on my desktop).
I've read someone saying that "Flash in Linux is not a feature, it's a bug". Unfortunatelly that is quite correct :D.
PS: Despite all problems I still want one.

Are you on crack?
The youtube vid he played was a HD vid and played damn near better than my laptop does.
The flash game was a tower defense game and looked to be shooting at correct speed and crawlers moving just fine.
I was blown away that it worked as well as it did especially over 3g.

I really hope you're right and I'm wrong, but it's not what I have seen on this video and others, and anyone that uses Flash in Linux knows that it is poorly implementated.
But as I've said I still want a N900, and still trying to find out how can I buy one, as I live in Brazil.
I can only see HD written in the title but the player still miss HD button as you usually see on HD youtube videos. This doesn't really count as playing HD video from youtube right ?

Yes. It's not real HD as far as I can tell. On my PC some videos have larger size (like the one shown), which is heavier and has better quality, but it's not HD.

this is the video in the video (that sounds weird)
so...... why isnt the hd button in the browser of the n900?

I doubt it would handle it. My Acer Aspire One won't (at least with Linpus Linux). It's an Intel Atom 1.6GHz. Probably faster than the Cortex used in N900 (not by much).
Nice video. I like the way they kept the camera on the screen so you could see accurately the speed of loading, without cutting away.

Too old a version of Flash, I believe, but Flash 10.1 should hopefully be coming in 2010.

Yes, and hopefully optimized for the ARM :D.

I assume th Youtube Flash player knows, that the installed version of Flash cannot handle HD, hence no button.

I guess my expectations are a bit lower than some, because I thought it did quite well, HD or not. If I can surf the web, watch youtube, and play flash games at that quality and speed I will be one happy camper.

@5:10 the screen blanks out black, and then white when re-maximizing a web-page from "the dashboard". Isn't the point of compositing to avoid such jarring transitions?
Regarding fullscreen flash content, I think implementing a 'double-tap' or 'long press' to maximize a video or game would greatly add to usability. I don't want to have to break out the stylus just to click the "fullscreen" icon on YouTube.
(Actually, I'd like to never have to pull out the stylus... but that's another issue entirely. ;) )

I like the idea, though if it doesn't get implemented and you don't want to whip out the stylus.. You could try..
Zoom in with the swirl

Why pull out the stylus when you could just swipe from the left - get the arrow and use that to click whatever you need,

Actually...
Swipe from the left, hover over icon, slide open keyboard, push shift key to 'click'.
This method or zooming isn't really that difficult of course, but neither are as easy or intuitive as double clicking in my opinion.

My Bad - you are right. Sorry

Yeah, double clicking would be the best solution, but these are just possible alternatives if they don't implement your idea (PS: put it on brainstorm I guess?).

No, actually I think you were right the first time. When you select the cursor icon, it appears to behave like a left mouse button being held down. That's why you use this mode to select text I guess...
Still, for maximizing flash content, double clicking would still be easier. ;)
EDIT:
OK... on second thought I think you would have to navigate in "hover mode" and then click with the shift key or space bar. Otherwise, it would be like navigating a page with the left mouse button depressed. That wouldn't really work. :)
You can of course also use the hardware keys for zooming in and then comfortably press the fullscreen button.

I really love the features discussed in the video. I just noticed though - Farmville gameplay loads so slow in this video. Is there anyway that I would be able to play flash games like how I see it on my desktop?

the N900 has a webbrowser... and it is able to play flash... but (just as the iphone) it is definetly not like a normal desktop.
it is slow rendering of the pages.
long loading.
heavy content(flash movie playing apps, flash games) is slow.
just open task manager to see how much cpu power or ram Iexplorer.exe uses. mozilla the same. chrome as well.
having 3 webpages open at the same time on the n900 is probably ultimate drama.
having 1 porn-site open is probably the worst. lots of pictures, flash, java stuff, adds etc.
which makes me ask... how does a webbrowser in a mobile device like the N900 handles cookies? pop ups? non-secure websites? etc.

i think you judge to early considering the device is not available to the market and comparing it with iphone (iphone can't open flash) is not wise because it will be different..
i the maemo 5 video (the ad) in 0:20 i saw an application named future crew.. anybody know what is that ??

It's a demo by Future Crew. FC is a legendary finnish demo group. They were also among the founders of Assembly. Former members have since founded Future Mark (3DMark), Remedy (Max Payne) and few other gaming related companies.

I've used Firefox for years but never come across this, thanks! I too hope the Maemo browser will allow this kind of thing.

You're right, and I've seen a few other examples on that in other videos. It doesn't look very swish.

I think the problem with that is that a double-tap or a long-press might mean something to the Flash object that you are clicking on, e.g. a game might use those gestures for bringing up a menu or performing some kind of action. And even if the browser could somehow overload those actions (maybe by clicking a toolbar button then clicking the Flash object), I don't think there's a standardised way to tell every Flash object to go into fullscreen mode, is there?

So did Future Crew produce the video and this is their little easter egg to say so, or are they actually producing Maemo 5-hsoted demos?

The HD version of this video is 960x480 (approx) - I don't see the point of playing this on the N900 - the quality and performance will suffer from scaling it to the screen size.
The smaller version (640x360) is just fine for a mobile device, if you ask me. It's YouTube after all, not a DVD player.

I honestly don't know. However, the HTC hero uses the 'double-tap' method to maximize flash videos and games. It appears to work pretty well too.
It may not work with everything (especially games), but if it only worked for video content, I would be happy with that.

Hrmm - since double tapping the nokia browser zooms into that area - I wonder if double tapping a flash would zoom into that flash - essentially giving you full screen.

That's useful to know. I wonder how they did that? Does it work with every Flash object (video or game) on any site, or have they coded something for specific sites, e.g. Youtube, I wonder?

Below is a link that demonstrates the flash capability of the Hero. While it isn't a very good advertisemtent for flash content on mobile devices, it does show the possiblities of using flash with more powerful hardware. Also, it shows games and video opening to full screen.
