Want to make your N900 look like it's made in the 90's? Then there is no better option than 9x! It's still heavely work-in-progress, but here's a few screencaps:

Note that this is all original work, not just copied and pasted straight from somewhere.

There will also be a lovely 256-color-aliased alternative icon set when I'm arsed to do it.

Very nice, did you build this in photoshop layer for layer?

If so, would you provide that PSD so that I dont have to rebuild every item an can start theming?

I'd love to, but unfortunately I use Paint Shop Pro. Also I just, for example, created one button pixel by pixel and after that copied and edited it for the rest of the buttons I needed.

The Theme Maker comes with the .psd so you can use that for theming.

I can provide you the .png of the image that is feeded into Theme Maker, but I shall do it after the theme is more complete.

Oh, in that case you don't even need this theme to lol. :)
The record player wasn't changed by the theme.

I think I'll upload a test version to extras-devel soon since the theme is shaping up pretty nicely, any objections? Also does anyone have any idea how to change some of the icons, like the media player ones and the browser ones since I'd like to make the black.

Very very cool !!

How about the phone applet? Have you had time to think about that already?

if not, here is what you could make of it :D

Too bad the theming engine only allows you to change the graphics, not the layout :(

Perhaps you should ask some of the t.m.o's programmers to implement an app like that?

If my device turns out to be too slaggy, I'll use this one and I'll be more tolerant with it.

Icons are under /usr/share/icons/Theme-Name the icons are in many folder there. If you want custom icons and are using theme maker to make your theme you will need to follow my instructions on breaking the theme maker .deb down and adding the files then making compiling a source package. I'm not saying you don't know how to do this already but if you don't I have a guide on doing it.

Ok, once i get my N900 i will make a LAYERED PSD and rebuild the original Theme, so that anyone can change transparency, colors or everything.

IMHO, PSD really isn't the best format for theme templates. Aside from the fact that Photoshop is expensive software which many people can't afford, vector graphics (particularly SVG) make modifications much easier (e.g. batch color replacement/shape adjustment, infinite scaling). Have you tried Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/download/?lang=en)?

The free development theme for earlier versions of Maemo (Plankton) was made with Inkscape, and Nokia provided the SVG template in the source package. Hopefully they'll do that this time around too, but I think Plankton is no more, and I'm not sure what its replacement is called.

edit: Btw, nice work on the theme joppu!

Actually, inkscape isn't preferred if you want any more advanced shading or effects or anything like that. I'm still working on one theme that'll be 100% svg for easy color replacement:

Heh, I think you mean it's not preferred by you. ;) Inkscape is quite capable when it comes to complex shading (http://www.inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.45-photorealistic-car2.png). It's been good enough for Nokia in the past (see the Plankton template (https://stage.maemo.org/svn/maemo/projects/haf/trunk/hildon-theme-plankton/template/) I mentioned.) I too am working on a two-tone SVG theme (updating the Kobayashi/Tritanium/Meta (https://synthesize.us/Maemo_themes) themes for Maemo 5).

Oh those trekkie ones. :D

No offence, I personally love Kobayashi, Tritanium and Meta.

I think it really comes down to preferance I mainly use Gimp because it is what I'm used to. I have started using inkscape some more now. For the easy color replacement

I agree that Photoshop is not the ideal software to make themes. I completely understand where it would be a preference to use freely accessible software. There is a bit of a learning curve involved though. I tried Inkscape a while back, and I couldn't figure out how to make nice graphics. There were no "preset" effects that I could find that made for impressive results. The interface seemed very limited. I understand that people use the software all the time, and it fills their needs. I'm just not that used to it, and I would think that having another type of file we can make themes from (.PSD & .SVG) would just be a bonus. In summary, if anyone has the time, it would be greatly appreciated if you could make a .PSD layered version of the theme. Thanks! :)

I apologize for deviating this thread somewhat and would like to add that I love the 'classic theme'!

The development themes are all done in Inkscape and a couple of themes that are based on it should hit the Ovi store soon (well, when Ovi store goes live). I hope we can get at least one template open sourced, and I am quite optimistic about that (work is under way).

Inkscape is actually really good for making sharp looking widgets, if you know exactly what you want to accomplish. Photoshop is fine too, and the filters can be a very powerful helper. Unfortunately Gimp doesn't have anything comparable to these filters, so I personally wouldn't enjoy working on a theme template with Gimp.
