A number of games I'd love to see Ported to MAEMO (keeping in mind, I'm new to Linux in general, so A: I don't have the know-how to set up a development machine and port them myself, abd B: there are likely MANY good reasons, mostly memory/processor overhead, that nobody has tried porting these titles allready, and C: I'm new to the forum, an insomniac, and have probably missed several obvious factors.)

Feel free to add to this list, or Shoot me down in flames.

Worms of Prey (http://wormsofprey.org) .
A VM for lemmings (to use the origional game data ?)
Emulators (compatible with standard roms) for various 8-bit and 16-bit generation consoles, especially SNES and Megadrive/Genesis
Arkinoid (NOT a clone)

I've yet to try the Xmame port with any of my favourite Roms, we'll see.......... :D

don't forget there is already a wishlist in the 2006 application catalogue.

Plus - to help people along, it would be helpful to dig out as much info as possible about the project you want ported; e.g. "this project uses GTK" or "SDL based" or whatever, then people can say "well QT isn't ported to maemo, so that would be harder than" etc.

e.g., after doing some clicking around, I note this about the worms project:

Dependencies:
SDL_image (required)
SDL_mixer (required)
SDL_net (required)
SDL_ttf (required)
Simple DirectMedia Layer (required)

Emulating an NES can be done. It will require optimization and time: taking a page from pocketpc emulators, it makes sense to simply draw buttons on the unused screen area and use the crosspad for the rest.

SNES and Genesis are basically right out.

Worms of Prey is quite possible.

Lemmings is very possible.

Arkanoid via emulation is probably possible.

Ok, i'm sorry if i seemed presumptuous, I'm well aware of the 770's limitations hardware-wise, but like i said, i'm not a coder, and quite new to linux, so things that make porting tricky or impossible (like dependencies not/not yet present in maemo) will likely go over my head.

hence, its a request list, not a "my 770 may as well be a brick without..." list,

and yes, i'm. prone to overdramatic/overreactive responses, hence i usually avoid forums, sorry everyone.

i'm also a sucker for retro games, sue me, hehe

There are genesis and snes emulators for nokia phones that run at full fps on systems with slower processors. Now, obviously that can be done on 770 as well.
genesis: http://www.zpmode.org/picodrive/
snes: http://www.vampent.com/vsun.htm
picodrive has sources available. It uses fully ASM cyclone 68000 emulator for ARM.

Is there any version of Lemmings that can be ported over relatively easily? It'd totally lend itself to the 770's input methods...

knottori, that vsun emu comes in a version without sound as well, any guesses why?

it also doesn't run at full speed

battle for wesnoth? :)

basically, I'll be happy with any more turn based strategy games and possibly an rpg? But if pressed, I'd love to see:

Harvest Moon
Advance wars
xcom
theme hospital

That kind of thing really :)

Or even more maps for Crimson Fields would be good!

n-gage has 104 mhz processor and full fps and sound at the same time is not possible. I guess that's the reason.

Porting amiga emulator should do the trick.

And that should be pretty easy.

Or, as there is already atari st emulator, you could also just use that!

having battle for wesnoth, now my desired games are:

-worms, clone or whatever
-risk game (maybe jrisk? http://jrisk.sourceforge.net/ )
-some trivia game

dreaming is free :)

I'm building UAE right now, but don't expect usable speed. Hatari on the 770 is already quite slow and the amiga has much more hardware to emulate.

(edit) Running UAE now :P

(edit) Sevenape: We can only port Open-Source games. Harvest Moon and XCom are commercial, as far as i can tell.

(edit) Speed for Arkanoid is very playable on 770. Trying some PD/Free games soon. Hildonizing, Doublesize and input control mapping still to-do. Garage page forthcoming later in the week.

Ooo... multiplayer versions of Risk, Stratego, Scrabble, Yahtzee, Battleship-- that's what I need!!!

You'll get better results submitting port requests for specific open-source linux programs not commercial computer games or board games. :)

Understood, Arnim, but I figured developers would lean toward clones anyway.

On a grand scale, what I envision as perfect for the tablet platform are games that are a hybrid of RTS and turn-based. Imagine that the game engine incorporates rules- and/or behavior-based autoturn capabilities. Say for example a player doesn't or can't respond to another player's moves in a reasonable time. The game server would act based on built-in or configurable parameters. It could resort to default behavior, "guesswork", or turn-skipping. Those are just a few ideas.

I'd love to see an IT game engine built from the ground up for this sort of purpose. It might take Nokia or a major game developer to pull it off, though...

I'm an idiot. The kind of game I'm talking about could use a pure web interface, with the game engine running entirely on the server. Heck, *I* could develop that (in VB.NET). Hmmm...

[sbox-SDK_ARMEL: ~/c64/vice-1.20] > dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -b

dpkg-checkbuilddeps: Unmet build dependencies: bison++ | bison flex libasound2-dev libbonobo2-dev libbonoboui2-dev libcairo2-dev libgnomecanvas2-dev libgnomeui-dev libieee1284-3-dev libpcap0.8-dev xaw3dg-dev libtwolame-dev libxmu-dev libxxf86dga-dev libxxf86vm-dev libxaw7-dev libxaw-headers

What a bloated dependency set for an emulator!

Found a M.U.L.E. clone! :)

http://www.heroicproportions.org/downloads.html

doesn't build out of the box though - anybody want to work on it?

(edit) got it compiled. One just has to manually go into the ./base directory and "make" each of these files, then cd .. and type 'make' to build the game.

base/lbm2tff
base/makefnt
base/makepak
base/makespr

Lots of rough edges but hey it runs...

Hope its C64 emulator, then we could play M.U.L.E. with it.. :)

All I want for my 770's is a decent Texas Hold'em simulator. Not one with cheesy animated players. Just a one that can play tournament level poker, with intelligent players of various playing styles. Don't want to play online games. It would be nice if I could play a good tournament anywhere, especially on a plane.
