View Full Version : Screen flicker?

Hey N900-people. I've had a disturbing problem every now and then; a bad flicker-attack on the screen. It looks like a faulty old CRT-screen, with very quick black horizontal lines running around the screen, a power-down does not necessarily help. Starts suddenly, and evidently stops just as suddenly; if I don't use the phone for a while, it's gone. I think this happens at least once a day...

I haven't read anything about this on here before, have I missed something or doesn't anybody else have this? A new phone shouldn't behave like this, so now I'm wondering if this is a bug-to-be-fixed or if the phone actually has a unique problem that needs service...

Sounds more like a hardware problem than a software one to me.

I know what you mean. My screen flickers when Im flicking through desktops. Do you notice it then?

Is there a microwave or any other heavy interference source close by (just to rule out the obvious)?

No microwaves around, this happens in different locations. But a good point, indeed. And I don't work or live in a radiotower or anything like that :-)
Butterfly: yes, indeed when flicking through desktops a few of the same horizontal black quick lines appear if I try a couple of times, but nowhere as much as when an "attack" occurs; they're everywhere then, I would say there are at least one line per screenupdate, probably more. 50 black horizontal lines in different places per second? Perhaps. There's a lot of flickering going on. And right now, nothing, the screen is calm and nice, and I haven't found a way to start this flickering-attack intentionally - yet.

Hi,
I can as well report that my screen does flicker when I change desktops.

I noticed that this does so when I do it at a fast rate.

I have the 3.2 firmware.

Did any others experience this?

Any solutions for it? Its rellay annoying especially when i think that this is a £500 phone.

Certainly haven't noticing anything like this myself.

OK so I am glad to know I am not alone! Are you all still getting this problem? Was anyone ever able to fix it?

Since last week I have this exact problem.

Although it goes a bit further and distorting the entire screen.
When I turn the screen off, it doesn't turn on again.
Leaving the device off for a while subsequently relieves the problem.

I'm sending it back to nokia as we speak and i hope it's something that can be diagnosed and fixed easily.

I also have the same problem.
The phone was not wet and didn't fall.
I was using the phone as a GPS and suddenly it started flickering.

When I turn the screen off, it doesn't turn on again.
When I turn on the phone, I sometimes have a flickering image, but most of the time no image at all.
The device works when I use tv-out.

Here is an image of my screen

Does someone have a fix for this? Or can tell me the cause of this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Further to this thread, I too have had recent problems with my N900 displaying a flickering screen or blank screen exactly as in the picture linked to the last post. This happened for several days on a random basis but with no reoccurrence for the last couple of weeks!

Has anyone managed to find out conclusively what causes this? Although I'm prepared to take my N900 to Nokia It would be useful to know as much as I can as I guess it’s likely it'll just get returned with no defect found!

Thanks in advance

Just for information, the flickering lasted one week.
I haven't had any problem with the phone since august and I use it every day.
Still don't know what was the cause.

No reoccurrence of flickering on my N900 since either!

Very frustrating as it let me down when I needed to use it extensively as a Sat Nav etc. It would certainly be good to know what the cause of this is!

Same here, started in just one spot, and for now I buy cheap screen protector, but really hate protectors.

Anyway i think there is no solution here, I must make a peace with cheap screen protector :)

I'm facing that problem since last weekend. Yesterday i made a full reflash but w/o many hopes and like i was figured out, nothing changes. Now i'm pretty sure that its a hardware problem. Today i've got my device opened and nothing seems to be wrong. All flex cables properlly connected and nothing seems to be broken, wet or something like that.
So, what do you guys think about this flickering horizontal lines problem ? How can i try to fix that ? For now, i have 2 choices: either buy a new flex cable http://www.parts4repair.com/nokia-n900-flat-flex-cable-ribbon-with-front-camera/ or buy a new display http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-OEM-Nokia-N900-LCD-Display-Screen-Replacement-Parts-/120746249398. What do you think that could be a better choice ? I just don't want to waste money :( That kind of sttuff are pretty expensive here in Brazil.
I really need an expert opinion here ! Thank you very much.

Edit: after buying and install a new LCD, the problem still there. So, i did order a new ribbon and now it works. Just for record, it's sooo easy to change that ribbon. I just recomend that you use the right screwdivers. No place for workarounds here or you will fuc* your screws.
Thanks all.

Since last afternoon, I've had the same flickering problem, which looks like the image posted by darodi. It happens one or two seconds after the initial Nokia screen appears at boot time (so, this really seems to be a hardware problem), then never stops. The lines entirely white are not affected. Changing the battery didn't help.

Can you try connecting to N900 through vnc server? This way you could understand if there is a faulty cable/lcd screen or the problem lies in the gpu.

I've got a new screen and everything is ok now. I'm wondering now why the problem wasnt showed when using some apps like backupmenu for exemple. The xterminal also suffer only minor cosmetic problem and i was still able to use it. Does It could be a resolution screen related problem? Anyone knows how can i change (get down) the n900's screen resolution ?

Just an update:
Firstly, when i said at the previous post that i got a new screen, i was meaning that i did change all the screen (not only LCD), touchscreen and that metal slider included. I did it because i got a used N900 and just for save work, i just took off all that thing and got my device easy way fixed. But after that, i did order a new LCD that will supposelly fix the other N900. Sadlly, when the new screen arrived, i found out that the issue wasn't the LCD because the problem still there after ressembling with the new LCD one. So, now i just ordered a new flex ribbon. As soon as i got it tested i'll report back.
I hope someone could barelly understand this s* of english. Still learning. :D
Thanks all.
