Hello and happy new year!
I'm new to the site and just bought n900. I searched and found the mplayer that I use with kmplayer, in order to play movies with external subtitles. The english subtitles work well, better than I expected in fact! The problem is with the greek subtitles, that show incorrect. (#%^&!@$#%^!$ %$&% for example). Is there any way to fix this? Maybe a different font or something? If yes, can anybody tell me a way to fix this?
Euh try to install Droid Font before . That may help

Can you please tell me how? I'm a complete noob if it requires programming.
EDIT:Already installed with nothing to have changed!
It's a problem with the subtitle encoding. Try adding
# Set font encoding.
subfont-encoding=unicode
# Set subtitle file encoding.
unicode=yes
utf8=yes
To the mplayer config file located at ~/.mplayer/config. You'll need terminal and for example leafpad to do this.

thank you again, but I can't do anything without guidance...
So please if you are kind, explain in noob steps what to do. I installed leafpad but i can't find/open config. And after that i copy all lines in the example, including # set mpla mpla? It might sound strange or stupid, but please respond.
I dunno about leafpad, but your device comes with the editor "vi".
1) Open an X terminal
2) Type the following: vi ~/.mplayer/config
3) This will open the editor on that file.
4) Press "I" on the keyboard to enter insert mode.
5) Type what joppu has above (you can ignore lines that begin with a # symbol)
6) When finished, hit "Esc".
7) Hit "Shift" key + ":" key.
7) Type "wq" and press enter.
8) Finished!
In all cases, you don't type the quotations.
If you struggle to use the editor vi, you can find a great guide here with a nice cheatsheet (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/vi-guide.xml).

No need for reboot. Just give:
echo "subfont-encoding=ISO-8859-7" > /home/user/.mplayer/config
Actually it is the same as editing the file. Greek subtitles are usually encoded as ISO-8859-7.

mplayer says that???
no, the vi editor after the command wq, in order to save and exit.

Leave away vi and give in a xterm as normal user:
echo "subfont-encoding=ISO-8859-7" > /home/user/.mplayer/config

You typed something wrong or u dont have mplayer installed which is in extra-testing. The code exactly is:
echo "subfont-encoding=ISO-8859-7" > /home/user/.mplayer/config

guys what about arabic ?
this way dont work for me
Any solution for Arabic subtitle?
any idea about hebrew subtitles?
For Arabic it should be ISO-8859-6 instead of ISO-8859-7 (try also with lowercase) and for Hebrew ISO-8859-8.
Hi ssarl
Thank you for help...
but i have tried that code ISO-8859-6 but it seems can't read in the movie , and the movie was so slow , and when i close movie , i saw the following message in xterminal
"subtitle font: prepare chrset failed.
unsupported encoding 'ISO-8859-6', use iconv --list to list
character sets know on your system.
P.S. i have also tried for hebrew , and it is the same!!
Have you tried with lower case letters? (iso-8859-6 and iso-8859-7)?
No, Caps only
"ISO-8859-6"
any idea???
Try with lowercase and then we will check it again.
unfortunately, same problem ... same message :(
Can you post the srt file you are trying to see?
Here it is attached,
and it is working perfectly in my PC with Vobsub program
Thanks
Well, it seems that N900 does not support ISO-8859-6 and ISO-8859-8. In the folder /usr/lib/gconv the corresponding libraries are missing. The viable alternative you have is to save the subtitles in UTF8, remove the /home/user/.mplayer/config file since mplayer has as default the UTF8 and retry.
Any solution for persian (farsi) subtitle?
with SUB/IDX I dont have any problem works great...but with SRT subtitle dont show correct and seems like: *&^%$$&*(
anybody know?
Dear ssarl
I remove config file , and saved the font in the srt file as enconding utf-8
but still the same effect ... Latin words...
Is there any thing i missed?
Thank you very much for your help.
Is there any help on the same topic ...
I can't see the arabic character till now

please guys, this post is about greek subs. Make another one with proper title for many more to discuss. It will be easier for you too! ;-)
Greek subs display correctly and this post should be closed!

echo "subfont-encoding=ISO-8859-7" > /home/user/.mplayer/config
αφήνω τα κενά όπως τα βλέπω ή όχι? πχ.: echo(κενό)"subfont-....κτλ?? Eυχαριστώ εκ των προτέρων (((ο:
