Is possible a emulator for games on symbian os?

It is certainly possible, but compatibility layer and API translation is enormous amount of work, comparable to Wine project on the desktop. So i doubt we will see it soon.

Is there anyway that we can get our symbian software on our Maemo.. because the maemo has powerful hardware which is better than all n-cerise nokia.
I think most of us has bought a lot of these software that was in symbian and now as we moved to a new system and at the same time we have the same Ovi store.. we should operate our old symbian on Maemo or at least we should have symbian emulator or something like that.
thanx for reading

Less likely, symbian uses a different resolution and different memory alocation + someone would need to code drivers for it, just like on your pc.

Your project might be a little too ambitious:rolleyes:

Just sell the N900 and buy the N97? They practically look similar, anyway.

Apart from the technical difficulties (which, I'm sure, could be soved... Come on, people run Windows on the N900!), I wonder how it would baffle Nokia's marketing people if you could dual-boot into a fully functional Symbian OS on the N900. :D

I'd rather see some of the excellent symbian softwares replicated in Maemo. Soon. ;)

I would never think of N97 which always lack of memory..
I rather staying in n900 and wait for 2 years instead

Yup, 5800 is as far as s60v5 is worth it... from nokia.
I actually wanted to get the omnia HD but... credit card fraud :|
When my money came back, the price difference to N900 was so small I just couldn't help it :D

Symbian emulation would be great! We could finally use Mobipocket again!

BTW I heard that the guys at XDAdevolpers.com have Android running now on a Windows Mobile device, HTC Touch or so...

You can probably do that using palm emulation which is already available. But I don't think any emulation will support DRM. I'd be happy to be contradicted on this!

The palm emulation certainly doesn't - it crashes the emulator as soon as I try to open an encrypted file. In general, it should be down to the emulator though - there's no hardware involved for DRM on most of these systems, so there's no reason it couldn't be done.

Watching the news about VMware and Android running on N900 I was wondering if could be possible to come up with an emulator to run Symbian Apps atop Maemo 5...

It seem like a crazy idea and I don't know if it is feasible since I am not a developer and new as a Maemo user. I am sure that it would not be a simple work and also probably wouldn't work for heavy consuming apps, but for sure it would be a solution pretty useful to instantly add lots of new apps to Maemo platform.

Does anyone know about techincal limitations in the HW or OS to implement such emulation?

ha....u r joking rite.....i have both N97 as well as N900....comparing the two is an insult to N900...maemo 5 is absolutely amazing....apart from the looks they are two completely different stuff....N97 is a phone more like....N900 is more like a mini computer...

Hey guys, Im new here, and to the whole maemo OS in general, Ive been a symbian nokia fan for soo long, i finally decided to try the n900, the fact that dell had a great price helped me make this decision lol.

Anyways I was wondering the exact same thing, there are soo many nice apps for symbian but im scared I wont be able to find them on maemo. Does anyone know if there are muslim devs out there that can come up with a Qur'an app and one that can give you reminders when the prayers are based on location?

As far as I'm aware there isn't anything available right now, but I believe people are looking into either writing or porting suitable applications.

You could ask for what you're looking for here (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=41155).

This is probably a stupid question but i was just curious to ask the pros.

I know there are emulators available to run gameboy games etc but is it possible to run/port symbian apps on the N900 and what are the complications?

Rob1n
2010-02-13, 14:23
I'm not aware of any way to do it currently. With the open-sourcing of the Symbian code-base, and current work on re-implementing the Symbian emulator, there's hope for being able to do this in future though.

im not sure if i want to see another symbian OS again as ive had enough of em. But then again Tomtom was the best app, u knw hw many missions that guided me to?! ;) hehehe

Hopefully they will make 1 for the n900 and it will be even better using it with the bigger screen an perhaps an updated version at least as the 1 on symbian was discontinued as well as the maps which sucked when u got to new roads/streets

i have wonder too if any of the symbian games are coming to maemo, that's what i miss the most of my old phone, games like Chuck norris bring on the pain, all those ubisoft games from pc games/movies, like prince of persia, assassins creed, mission impossible, all those applications for symbian are really missing in maemo, i don't get why nokia doesn't help us, i feel like maemo is more in the hands of users here than in nokias.....

what emulators? D: .. i got ScummVM, Snes, and gba and they're great, but i can't say that i wouldn't like contineous games ports on my phone everytime a movie/game comes out, for example, just checked www.mobi11.com for symbian games and they already have iron man 2 games xD and it's not even out... ubisoft will make prince of persia forgotten sands, etc, and mean while i'm playing bjeweld...that's what i miss

I wanna run symbian apps, like google maps, with full support for GPS and internets, plus make easy migration from symbian > maemo/meego

this would be epic. I wonder since nokia pretty much runs symbian, and the n900 would be epic if they could do this

I do not want hurt you, but I really do not understand.
I have an N900, an openmoko freerunner, an ipaq with angstrom, 3 linux box at office and at home, 2 wifi hotspots with openwrt becouse I'll never need symbian/microsoft/mac applications and prefer too much to hack my hardware and software.

I have a DSL at home with a flat landline voip plan and 10 free sms/day that are possibile only when I'm connected to my home router.
I work very far during the week, installed a 5 euro device on my home network with openvpn server, installed openvpn client on my n900, played with a patched asterisk (as my dsl provider does not follow a standard sip protocool) and played two night to have me use with the n900 my voip landline flat plan and send free sms while traveling over the world.

I'm happy with that, and If I need other things, like symbian games, iphone apps, and so on I simply buy a different (and less expensive) device and not waiting years for someone writing an emulator, layer, virtualization system for the n900.

So instead of asking about that, I prefer to bother nokia to fully open any specs on the n900 :)))

Cheers

Niko

what are you talking about? :s who said anything about voips? or anything, this is a topic about GAMES, one aspect our maemo is seriously failing, i don't like apple fan boys, because they can't accept that iphone isn't that great, but you're doing just the same thing, maemo is light years behind apple/symbian gaming wise, our top game is what? angry birds? ...just check any symbian app page, like mobi11 and see the games section, and you'll realize your missing something....i love my n900 but i can't just obviate that aspect just because.....

I had an N97 and i sold it out to buy an N900, and I don't regret it AT ALL...is the best phone/tablet/hybrid/whatever-you-want-to-call-it I'd ever had.

But... there were some apps that, even with all the problems the N97 had/have, made it not so unusable and I haven't found any as good as those (some are very close, yes, but not nearly there).

OMWeather for N900 is great, it really is, but I liked Accuweather a lot better (I found it extremely accurate and the "reel feel" feature was amazing).

Also, the N97 English Dictionary App (I'm not talking about the T9 or anything related with SMS, but a Dictionary App supported by Nokia) was awesome and I used it a lot, as English is not my first language, and I miss something like that in the N900, I tried a couple of Dictionary Apps and frankly they suck.

So, yes, I'm in for either a Symbian emulator or an official Maemo version of those apps.

Wow.

Everybody loves mameo.

But to have funcionality someone would want on the device Ubuntu... some other symbian... some other iphone OS, some other android... some other windows mobile...

Something is really wrong with the software on this device and it isn't his wonderful comunity. This comunity.

Nokia would take note.

Symbian dual boot on n900 would be awesome.

Free Nokia Maps
A Fast version of Symbian
All of the Apps
Working Google Maps
Proper iplayer
A better ovi store
Proper syncing with Ovi Suite.

Couldn't lose maemo though, its sooo much better.

Ok now that Symbian is open source and has been open source for a while would it possible to get the Symbian apps running through an emulator on Maemo. I would like this very much because there are many apps that I wish were available for the n900 but just aren't. The only real issue I can see is that Maemo runs in a much higher (800x480) resolution the Symbian devices which run at a resolution at much lower (640x360). What do you guys think.

Hello, I am wandering if it even possible to create an emulator for an application of Symbian device to run on N900.

For example, Ovi Map 3.04 on Symbian

If it is possible then we can solve so many missing functionality or applications to N900 like Voice Nagivation.

Well, this is what I saw in my dream last night lol.

Come on Symbian is pretty hard to use and looks really ugly these days. Sorry but classic Windows Mobile is More usable than Symbian how ever Symbian ^3 should help Symbian catch up with everyone else. Also for some reason people consider Google Android to geeky and I really don't understand that. Maybe people have expected too much simplicity from having iPhones so much.
