I'm currently beta testing the new Ovi Suite 2.1.0.47 (soon to replace PC Suite)
Just to let you guys know it isn't support the N900 at the moment.
When connect the N900 and PC-Suite mode is selected, Ovi Suite throws an error: Unfortunately your device is not supported by Nokia Ovi Suite
I will update you when Nokia comes back with any further info regarding supporting the N900

Well that sucks and is unacceptable really.

I just checked the Nokia USA site and now the N900 is listed as a supported phone with Ovi Suite 1.1. I'm downloading it now and will advise.

Ovi Suite 1.1 gets all the way to connecting the device and then says the device is NOT supported. I must be going crazy because I swear the Nokia USA website listed the N900 (with a picture) on the Ovi Suite 1.1 compatibility list. :confused:

I saw it there, too, and got the same installation results. It is not supported, despite what the campatibilty list says.
The most annoying is that if you have already the PC Suite installed it proposes to "update" it to the new and better OVI suite.
Actually they know it's not ready; that's why instead of an upgrade they do a side by side installation.

I just got off the phone with Nokia N900 support and their official position is that synchronizing with Outlook is not officially supported by the N900. I have to wait for a firmware update that is expected sometime this year.:rolleyes:

Yes, I got the message too. Too bad they couldn't have told us in advance, rather than make us jump thru hoops for nothing.
Of course, if you are trying to sell things, your BEST prospects are people who just made a related purchase. So by being slow with regard to the N900 means they are dumping sales in the trash.

I ordered mine on Sep 29, got it on Dec 7. I agree that it is still 6 months from being ready for "prime time". It is sooooo close...yet just out of reach!
I am also annoyed by the lack of forthrightness on Nokia's part. The Nokia web site funnels us over to Maemo.org, but are the Nokia folks here too? I would really like better communication from Nokia on these issues. E.g. when the heck will the Ovi store really open for N900? Another case of soooo close...yet just out of reach.
Actually, the Nokia web site still implies the N900 is supported by Ovi Suite. Just go to:

Then click "Read more" under "Upgrade your Nseries PC Suite". This brings you to the page where you can download Ovi Suite 1.1. The N900 is shown in the list of supported devices. Since we know that is not actually true right now, one can only hope this means it's coming real soon now.
I never trolled, never had any other phone devices than Nokia (except 1 poor motorola and siemens long time ago). But my N81 8GB says its not supported either! Nokia has such a mess on their website, software and who knows where.
New phone, then OVI 2 released=no support for the phone. U click a link on N900 OVI store- it goes to COMING SOON page, while you can access it via regular store.ovi.com.
When you try to complete the +survey+ about usability of nokia's site- it returns an error at the end. Nokia really should get some new management and fire a couple of people who are getting payed for drinking coffee and eating donuts and not their work actually.

Give up. Nokia really doesn't care about the N900. It's obvious by their lack of really having anything develope for the N900. Even in their updates there are bugs that have been reported as fixed now for two months but are not included in the last two updates.
They just keep on showing they really are not going to develop the N900 into the phone it could be.

Well, nothing to add here, just another post to express how angry I am that I paid $550 for a device that the manufacturer does not seem to care to support.
Don't think I'm not embarrassed to be a troll in an internet forum. Please take it like part of my therapy.

Besides that, I've mailed Nokia Support and they answered that the team from Ovi Suite is working with Maemo team to add support, but didn't say when... The real questions is: why haven't they talked BEFORE N900 was released!????? Didn't they all work for the same company!?
Rethinking this, I would say that Nokia enthuasically providing links to this 'not supported' message is one of the most pathetic foot-shootings I've seen for several years. Couldn't N900 owners be routed to a message that doesn't treat them like idiots with an unauthorized device?

Considering the target audience of geeks - i.e. people who know better than to install random crap vendors nundle with their hardware, I'm always surprised to see people actually want the ovi/pc suite crud...

After reflecting on how the the N900 has been presented so far, I don't think showing a picture of an N900 while promoting a service that isn't supported is a mistake.
It fits a pattern of subtle deception that has been present since the first pre-launch pictures of the N800 started to appear in blogs and tech sites.
These Nokia "press kit" images showed the N800 with a navigation program running on the screen. This program turned out to be a third party app called Navicore that wasn't ready for sale until almost 3 months after the N800's release.
I also remember a video for a service provider showing a young businessman walking down the street using an N800 in a high resolution video conference. Not only did the display not drop a frame, but the dudes hair was perfect.... Marketing never makes mistakes. :rolleyes:
I was eventually happy with what the N800 finally did deliver but it never was a universal video chat client and the $149 Navicore app set a new standard for suckiness.
Since then I have been an avid supporter of Maemo and this community. After all, it was this community and not Nokia that contributed to my overall positive experience with the N800 / N810.
This time however, Nokia's deceptive marketing practices are over the line and affect more people and have cost more money.
The OVI brand has always been co-opted with the N900. The word "OVI" can be seen somewhere in most screen shots and advertising collateral. Plus the dang thing shipped with an OVI shortcut and an OVI widget. :eek:
It was reasonable to expect that the OVI services available to this newer N900 would be at least as good as those available for older, less expensive Nokia devices. I am not talking about the "free navigation" that was recently announced, I am talking about all the core OVI services that are available through a fully functioning OVI suite installed on a PC.

I don't in anyway want to imply that these guys are accountable for Nokia's marketing practices. Rather, I'm suggesting that since Nokia used them to roll the Maemo message down to this community, it makes sense that they can roll back up this communities response to the current marketing practices.
I hope that the message is something like:
"The people who belong and contribute to maemo.org didn't just fall off the dang turnip truck. Most already know what they want and at times are more knowledgeable about the capabilities of a new device before many within Nokia's own organization are. Stop treating them like children who are distracted easily and can be redirected with bells and whistles."
Nokia will more than likely pull through in it's final firmware release... and that will pro'ly come just a few weeks before the next device is available to developers. Just as it did with Diablo.
This time however, it could be too late as the Maemo user base has substantially widened and has a louder "voice" that is heard in many other outlets.

I seriously do not understand why nokia is taking so long to make these things compatible to maemo 5.
I am sure they can double the no. of n900's sold by just adding two things:
1. Ovi maps 3.0 with free navigation
2. Nokia ovi suite.
And both of them are nokia products.
Come on nokia get them working with the next firmware update and i promise you that the no. of n900 sold will be double in half the time until now.

Third is about the PC Suite not fully functioning for N900 is because the PC suite is built for Symbian os phones, but some functions of the PC Suite is functioning for N900 to update the firmware of the phone.

neotalk, good news! It seems that both Ovi support and maps are on the way! Well, if Nokia delivered the N900 with a bunch of Ovi logos, it would be a Wrong Thing to not include the Ovi support later.
Patience... The summer is coming, and then I'll have more time to play/hack/debug/code!
Dont worry Neo soon the maps 3 will be compatible to your phone N900.

I remember a teacher I had in the University that hated us when we used terms like "much", "a few", "a lot"... he always insisted that "much" or "a few" are not numbers. He always wanted any answer being supported by facts/numbers.
So, "soon" is not a date.

From someone (Nokia) who is really pushing Qt on the developers on the grounds that it'll allow easier porting between Symbian/Maemo, you'd think they would at least lead by example. Instead, their own internal processes can't even be ported between the two unrelated OS's...

I turned on my PC and get a message telling me a new version of the Nokia Ovi Suite is out. Oh! Great! Maybe N900 is supported...
I wait for the 94MB download, install, connect the phone (USB) and....surprise (NOT)....

2.2 is supporting N900, you just have to wait a bit.
The best way to access the pitiful few apps for N900 on the Ovi store is to go to the Ovi store using the browser directly from the N900 itself. I have successfully downloaded a number of things OTA.

when i do that it says my device isnt compatible. is there anyway to download it on the computer?then to my n900? ovi is telling me i need to upgrade to maemo 5. it worked when i had pr1.1
emmm, i don't really care if any ovi suit would support n900, as they never would release linux version. i was approved as beta tester and tried to launch it thru wine, but it asked me to get some files from microsoft site, so i just gave up (i think it still can be managable to run thru wine). Nokia is not a cake anymore

It IS a mobile computer - you whining that you bought a phone will not change what it actually is. It was advertised as a mobile computer, if you can't even be bothered to do a modicum of research before laying out the cash, then you have nobody to blame but yourself.
If you want an appliance so you can be soothed and wrapped in cotton wool, go buy an iPhone.

Just updated to Ovi Suite 2.2 supporting N900. Maps updates available for download as well.
Ciao,,,any news about N900-Ovi sync ?? At the moment I'm using the iphone to "organize my life" (I use Omnifocus but there are thousands of apps that can do that in gtd style)..
What is wrong?? I thought the n900 was smarter but....
I would pay even 50 euros for a serious applications capable of managing my projects...(I'm tired to carry two devices)
What are the maemo guys focusing on at the moment??
