It does not shut off. At the Nokia CES tent a few of the N800's being held by Nokia reps had this cover/flap installed. I did note that it just covers the screen and nothing more.

People on this forum have run magnets over their N800s and the N800s don't go into standby - that feature is gone, unfortunately. :(

Also, the case you refer to has been discussed in the forums and is NOT currently available for sale. You might want to mention there is no known availablility date for the case, or see if you can find out a date from any Nokia chums you might have?

For the UK at least, this link (http://shop.nokia.co.uk/bin/venda?ex=co_wizr-xapian&bsref=nokia&searchfld=&searchpage=0&searchinvt=1&searchstry=0&searchicat=0&searchlike=1&itemsperpage=5&threshold=50&srchopt=R%2CH%2CI%2CF%2CA%2CB%2CS%2CT%2CJ%2CG%2CK% 2Csortname%2Csortprice&xptpl=wz_xapian_advanced&srchopt=A%2CH%2CR%2CF%2CI%2CG%2CB%2Csortname%2Csor trelease&ARG_DEFAULTOP=AND&searchex=N800&phone=Select+a+phone%3A) will return all current N800 accessories (note: no case/flap thing).

Actually, I did see the flip case over at Tableteer and it said 'Coming Soon'.

That doesn't look like much of anything. If I could tell how it attaches to the 800, I'm sure I could make my own.

Could you see how?

I suspect that its attached to a replacment back cover.

I thought it wasn't such a good idea to have magnets near electronic devices like the N800...like those phone covers with those really strong magnet clip, my old 7610's screen went all funny with those.

I like the idea of sticking it the the fridge though! I can order groceries and whatnot online whilst being by the fridge to check out stuff I need! hahaha!

I'm worried though that it would just slip and smash on the kitchen floor....how strong is that magnet? And if it's that strong, will it not affect the N800?

There are two historical reasons why magnets and computers don't mix. One is that computers have typically had magnetic storage devices like floppy disks and hard disks. The other is that magnets placed near a CRT screen could misdirect the electron beam, causing it to hit another part of the screen than that intended, resulting a lovely, usually temporary, rainbow effect. The Nokia IT uses solid state flash for storage and a LCD screen for display purposes. Neither should be able to be affected by a few small magnets. Of course, if you bring you IT with you to have a MRI taken, it is liable to become a projectile :)

Ah ok that's cool! And lol, @ the projectile thing. I've heard many wierd and wonderful stories related to that.:D

That could be a Duke Nukem Forever "coming soon" ;)

Actually, Duke Nukem might be with us before this case. This case is essential for the unprotected N800 - absolutely nuts to keep it back this long.

Reggie - any chance of an update? Got any contacts at Nokia?

A smashed or damaged N800 screen is not covered by the warranty - I doubt I could use Nokia's tardiness bringing this protective case to market as an excuse! ;)

So with this so called "case" whats it suppose to do when the everyday use comes around of o lets say it drops??? Someone posted a hardcase that fits the N800 i still think thats going to be the best bet.

Horses for courses.

I want something that protects the screen without adding bulk and am prepared to trust my cat-like reflexes, while others may want something that gives all round protection with the inevitable addition of bulk/weight. :)

The latter group seem to be well catered for with more-or-less fitting cases designed for other devices, however the custom Nokia job still isn't available after 6 weeks. If you want a hard case, don't let me stop ya! ;)

I got a DS case and took out the plastic insert, but now, since Nokia saw fit to make a device with no way to attach anything to it, I can't see a good way of fastening the device inside the case. Any thoughts on that?

I modified the Nintendo DS case and like the results. Instead of completely removing the plastic - I trimmed it down so the N800 is supported on the bottom and sides. The plastic side supports slightly cover the speakers - but no problem. I also cut out the wrist strap and use the two elastic straps to store the extra stylus. It slides out easily and enables the N800 to stay in the case fo r most use. This way when the N800 is in the case - I use the extra stylus. When I remove the unit from the case - the main stylus is always in the N800.

The last thing I did was removed the thread from the crappy Nokia case - trimmed it to fit inside the Nintendo case and glued it to the inside so the soft inside of the Nokia case covers the screen when the case is closed.

The result is what appears to be a rough but almost custom looking case for the N800.

I use a PDA case from Case Logic (PDA holder plastic removed) and fixed my N800 with a Velcro strip above the back cover (the thickest point...). This works quite reliable, it so strong that I use the stylus to peel it off. Could optimize the width/length of the strip...

I also tried the Nintendo DS case - with the plastic internal holder trimmed to cover only the lower corners, it fits remarkably well. Here's how it looks in the packaging from BestBuy:
http://creativista.net/Transfer/Package.jpg
It isn't much larger than the suede case:
http://creativista.net/Transfer/Compared.jpg
The outer material has a cushion quality to it, but there are actually stiff inserts inside. The back pocket can hold a pair of earphones, but it will be tight:
http://creativista.net/Transfer/Pocket.jpg
The N800 fits nicely inside:
http://creativista.net/Transfer/Open.jpg
Here's a closer look at how you can trim the corner to hold the N800 snugly:
http://creativista.net/Transfer/Corner.jpg

It's an excellent case for about $11.

According to expansys (http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=144920) the official Nokia N800 case is now DISCONTINUED!!!

What a joke.... Reggie or anyone else, do you have any contacts that can confirm this?

Pretty funny, if so. I'm pretty happy with the rubbery skin I got from Hong Kong via ebay, for $10 including shipping. It doesn't protect the screen, but it seems adequate anyway. By the time the screen breaks I'll be ready for some other small computer.

I am very disappointed at the lack of a proper case for the N800. The metal lid + pouch of the 770 were far superior to the felt "eyeglass" slip case (slip, because it is liable to slip out and hit the floor). Perhaps they intend for us all to break our N800's in short order so we buy the N900? Sorry, not falling for that one Nokia! From the promise and dump routine Nokia pulled on the 770, the accessories that never ship and the utterly unacceptable repair process, I increasingly see Nokia as a company that with intent makes false promises to its customers or whose view of their own capabilities is drastically out of line with their ability to deliver. Either way, it doesn't speak well for them. The dump and run routine Nokia pulled with the 770 has been particularly harmful to their reputation. It is showing up in a lot of places online. More than anything, Nokia would be well served by appointing an official community ombudsman to directly interact with the community. As it is now, I feel a lot of ill will is being generated because nobody is speaking in an official capacity for Nokia (even spin ridden answers would be better than none).

CASE LOGIC PLT-2 STRONGMAN PDA CASE

Pros:

* Great padded protection (Normal drops won't do any damage).
* Perfect fit for Nokia N800 (as if it was built specifically for it).
* Stores 2 extra batteries in pouch BEHIND Nokia N800, extra stylus in stylus holder, extra SD card in business pouch, and some papers/business cards in remaining business pouches (everything inside case so no need to carry the extras in pockets).
* Do not have to remove the Nokia N800 from case in order to use it.
* Looks nice.

Cons:

* None.

Don't panic! :)

OK, my bad for reporting this too quickly - I sent a message to expansys and this is their reply:

The system automatically put it on discontinued as there were no orders on it for a while.

We are still waiting to find someone holding stock and a confirmed price.

The case may yet become available but why it is taking expansys so long to get hold of stock is anyones guess - this product was announced 3+ months ago.

Like most people I've been looking for an N800 case too (I searched and searched for the official product, but with zero joy), so here are the results of my searching for your benefit.

These guys do a decent-looking leather case:
http://www.proporta.com/F02/PPF02P05.php?t_id=3260&t_mode=des (UK)
http://www.proporta.com/F02/PPF02P05.php?t_id=3260&t_mode=des (US)
(I love the way us Brits get stitched on pricing, £26.95 vs $34.95!)

These US-based guys do a good range of accessories for the N800:
http://www.boxwave.com/products/easyfinder/buy-best-nokia-n800-accessories_2569.htm
And here's their equivalent leather case, which also looks reasonable:
http://www.boxwave.com/products/dlsleeve/nokia-n800-designio-leather-shell-sleeve_2569.htm
And a 'FlexiSkin' rubbery number, if you're into that:
http://www.boxwave.com/products/flexiskin/flexiskin-nokia-n800_2569.htm

I checked Amazon but couldn't find much through a direct search.

Shopping.com had the leather and rubbery cases:
http://www.shopping.com/xFS?KW=Nokia+N800+case&CLT=SCH&x=23&y=6

And so did eBay:
http://preview.tinyurl.com/28k9kh (the eBay URL was ridiculous!)

May you all have beautifully protected N800's!

PS I love Nokia (never had anything other than Nokia), but WHY do they have to make it such a pain to get certain things from them?!

Has anyone tired the similar PLTE-2. A "durable, molded case" for $19.77 on Amazon (less on eBay).

I haven't tried it but the dimensions are a lot bigger so I wouldn't think it would be such a good fit as the one I have.

See the Official Nokia Case (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8004) thread it has pictures and other comments specific to the SU-31 which should give you more of an idea.

Basically, attach the thin metal plate to the back of the battery cover on your N800 and optionally use the remaining two fatter magets to secure your N800 to vertical panels such as a fridge door... mad if you ask me but those crazy Finns eh? :)

So has anyone actually tried the PLTE-2 since the PLT-2 was discontinued. I see that it is a bit larger on the outside and the internal dimensions make it seem like the extra half inch in width could potentially be a problem. Based on the prev post (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showpost.php?p=42634&postcount=60), the fit seemed tight with PLT-2, but I really don't know how those clips have changed in size. If anyone can check this out that would be great. I like the HD case and the Otterbox, but it seems like for everyday use, this would be pretty nice. I would like to buy one in the next few weeks, so please, someone check this out if you have a chance (as will I if I can).
