I was on facebook and a message came up saying application stopped due to low memory (or something along the lines), at this point I closed the web browser and though that maybe i should resart the n900 to clear any backlog. I had it plugged in charging at the time and when i turned it off the screen went to the nokia logo with no backlight on. Due to work i had to unplugg it while it was still like this and when I came to turn it back on it hangs on the flashing dots after flashing a few times then turns off.

Has anybody else had this or know of anything i can try to get it back working?

Experineced something similar, when on a call with low battery it went flat. Started to recharge and I tried to start it after a while but same sympthom as described. After fully recharged I removed battery and tried to start it again but without success, did the same again and then it woke up...
