This will be a continuation of a 770 "blog" I maintained at

http://www.palminfocenter.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27744&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

As you will see, it will mainly be links to mentions or items about the 770. I'd appreciate people NOT posting here unless it is with such links. I'm not big on clogging this thread with extraneous discussion. You'll see there was very little of that in the original.

I got to fondle a 770 at Linux Expo and wrote about here:

http://jkontherun.blogs.com/jkontherun/2005/06/jkontherun_gues.html

This was linked to by a bunch of sites and also spawned a "reprint" here:

http://mobile88.com/news/read.asp?file=/2005/7/10/20050710231506&sec=Cover%20Story

I'll add to this as time and material warrants.

A 770 mention
http://www.lonnypaul.com/lonny.paul/2005/07/31/the-nokia-linux-based-770-internet-tablet/

Some items I will put here will be about Nokia the company. Did you know this company started out in *lumber*? And merged with a firm that did rubber goods (getcher mind out of that gutter; think galoshes!) and one that manufactured cable (as in wire; not coax)? It's a *very* interesting company, and some of these links will be here simply because I want them to be.

You lot stick to the 770 itself!

I put this here to actually solicit an *answer* in this thread. The 770 does not support QuickTime. Is there such a beast for Linux, and the Debian flavor, at all? Does anyone know if the above could be ported to Maemo?

And this now makes me wonder about something else too: can Windows Media Video play under Linux? Is there such a player? And could it be ported to Maemo?

According to Nokia, the 770 video support includes MPEG1, MPEG4, Real Video, H.263, AVI, 3GP. I think we'll still need/want WMV and QT.

>>>Nokia Theatre Times Square, located at 1515 Broadway, the corner of Broadway and 44th Street in the Viacom/MTV building, will be an innovative, multi-use theater that can be transformed to accommodate a wide array of events including concerts, live television and web broadcasts [...]

In addition, Studio Red, a division of Rockwell Group, have created a three dimensional connection between great entertainment and the Nokia Mobile experience with the Nokia Lounge, Vision Wall and equalizer.

Aside from lacking Java, many people feel another fault of the 770 is that it lacks an IR port. Many people, seeing this as a device to use at home while watching TV, would like to also use it as a universal remote. This makes a lot of sense.

One reason I'd personally like to see an IR port on a future model is that I use this a lot:

I pity the fools who come across this ersatz blog via RSS. Why try to destroy RSS like that?! And I don't see any info here that'd be of use to devs.

Don't forget: We can't even Bluetooth "beam" contacts and stuff, because 770's can't link via BT for security reasons. They can link via WiFi, though, but I don't know how transferring contacts and such would work. We need a dev who either has two devices or two devs who are in the same area to try out this WiFi linking business and to report on it.

At that Japanese site you linked to, I ran across what turned out to be a reference to a report by Gartner on PDA shipments by OS. Here's one place that report is reported on:
http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS7215702513.html

"Worldwide Q2 PDA shipments bounded up 32 percent year-over-year, to 3.6 million units, according to Gartner. Linux PDAs accounted for less than one percent of shipments, a figure likely to grow as PalmSource completes its transition to Linux, and as much-anticipated Linux PDAs such as Nokia's 770 ship."

And:
"The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet (pictured at right) is Nokia's first Linux product aimed at consumers, and its first entry into the PDA market. If early enthusiasm for the device holds up, it could well boost Linux to a comeback PDA OS market share."

-- Of course, the 770 will be recorded as a PDA for a long time yet, till this niche is well established. I'll be interested to see what the figures will look like a year from now.

Why did Tapwave & Gizmondo fail?
http://gigaom.com/2005/08/05/why-did-tapwave-gizmondo-fail/#more-4837
-- this is worth a quote of its conclusion:

So if you are a consumer electronics start-up (and there are many given the number of VCs scrambling to fund one or more such efforts) you need to avoid the four mistakes made by Gizmondo and Tapwave. Here are four things you can do to make your chances better:

1. Focus on one function and forget about multitasking. Impress customers with your best feature.
2. Ignore the early adopter, and make the device easy enough to pass the “mom test.” Mass market makes companies, A-list geeks don’t.
3. Looks matter - regardless of what people say, like in love, looks matter. People like beautiful and aesthetically pleasing objects. They are willing to pay an extra $200 for a simple hard drive. Steve Jobs knows that.
4. You can’t buy buzz - buzz happens, because people love your products. Simple as that. If you are great, in this over-connected web-enabled world, people will find you. Learn from Slim Devices.

-- I've never heard of Slim Devices -- http://www.slimdevices.com/ -- has anyone?

#1 - This could account for the geek thrashing Nokia has been getting over the 770 -- "WTF? No hard drive?"
#2 - I disagree with to some extent. Influencers account for free sales pitches -- "Man, you gotta see what I just got!!"
#3 - The 770 isn't the prettiest thing in the world, but at least it doesn't have slippery shiny bits that will capture fingerprints.
#4 - Ah, see, he agrees with me after all. But Slim Devices?! Who they?

From the Editor: The Hundred-Dollar Laptop
http://www.technologyreview.com/articles/05/08/issue/editor.0.asp
>>>Nicholas Negroponte, founder and chairman of MIT's Media Lab, showed attendees the screen of the Hundred-Dollar Laptop, or HDL. Beginning in 2006, he said, he would build 100 million to 200 million HDLs every year--and distribute them to the children of the poor world. Many attendees had read about Negroponte's idea and dismissed it as quixotic. Hearing how an HDL might be built, seeing a part of it, and realizing the scale of the project produced a rustle of delighted interest.

>>>Can a $100 computer be built? Maybe. Negroponte does not plan to use three expensive components of conventional laptops: Microsoft Windows, a traditional flat-panel screen, and a hard drive. Instead, the HDL will be loaded with Linux and other open-source software; its display will use either a rear-projection screen or a type of electronic ink invented at the MIT Media Lab; and it will store one gigabyte's worth of files in flash memory.
-- well look, if it's true that everything is going to migrate to The Network, then the 770 is indeed the pre-"HDL," although at $350 right now. It wouldn't make sense to have a battery-sucking HD; solid-state storage is battery-friendly and less prone to dying from an accidental drop. Perhaps the 3rd-gen 770 -- the 990? -- will be the true HDL. If anyone can do it, I think Nokia can.

Palm to take on the Nokia 770!

Hawkins: Palm Has Secret Third Business
http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=7999

QUOTING:

Q: Can you give me a better idea about what this "child" technology is?

A: Not really. I'll give you a couple clues. I always think of mobile computing as personal computing. This long-term vision has led us through everything -- first the organizers and now through the smart phone space. It's like everything a personal computer is. Continue down that path. What are the implications of a world where everyone has a super high-speed Internet connection in their pocket and many gigabytes of storage, super-fast processors, audio, visual and multimedia? What are the consequences of that? How will that change computing when you have all that stuff available to you all the time? I try to think into the future. That's how we come up with new products. So I'm not going to tell you what it is, but it's following the consequences of mobile computing.

=======

DUH! I just wrote about the HDL in my 4th entry today (see above). This was before I saw this. Go see how it ties in. This is a 770 competitor.

The only question is, will it be running creaking Infinite Garnet or Windows Mobile (as the new Treo 670 will be!)?

UPDATE: Silly me, thinking Palm would be even capable of such a reach. As The Register has keenly and perceptively (and calmly!) analyzed this and concluded that it is nothing more than the LifeDrive, I am forced to agree.

When Pigs Wi-Fi
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/07/opinion/07kristof.html?oref=login&pagewanted=print

By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF

HERMISTON, Ore.

This is cowboy country, where the rodeo is coming to town, the high school's "kiss the pig" contest involves a genuine hog, and life seems about as high-tech as the local calf-dressing competition, when teams race to wrestle protesting calves into T-shirts.

But Hermiston is actually a global leader of our Internet future. Today, this chunk of arid farm country appears to be the largest Wi-Fi hot spot in the world, with wireless high-speed Internet access available free for some 600 square miles. Most of that is in eastern Oregon, with some just across the border in southern Washington.

Driving along the road here, I used my laptop to get e-mail and download video - and you can do that while cruising at 70 miles per hour, mile after mile after mile, at a transmission speed several times as fast as a T-1 line. (Note: it's preferable to do this with someone else driving.)

This kind of network is the wave of the future, and eastern Oregon shows that it's technically and financially feasible. New York and other leading cities should be embarrassed that Morrow and Umatilla Counties in eastern Oregon are far ahead of them in providing high-speed Internet coverage to residents, schools and law enforcement officers - even though all of Morrow County doesn't even have a single traffic light.

The big cities should take note, said Kim Puzey, the general manager of the Port of Umatilla on the Columbia River here. "We'd like people to say, 'If they can do it out in the boondocks with a small population, that model can be applied to highly complex areas,' " he said.

Mr. Puzey, who says wireless broadband is central to the port's operations, argues persuasively that broadband is just the next step in expanding the national infrastructure, comparable to the transcontinental railroad, the national highway system and rural electrification.

Indeed, we need to envision broadband Internet access as just another utility, like electricity or water. Often the best way to provide that will be to blanket a region with Wi-Fi coverage to create wireless computer networks, rather than running D.S.L., cable or fiber-optic lines to every home.

So if the first step was to get Americans wired, the next step is to make them wireless.

Two pioneers in that process are Portland, Ore., and Philadelphia, which are both moving toward citywide Wi-Fi Internet access. Consumers will still have to pay for broadband, but only about half as much as they do now.

Still, Portland and Philadelphia won't have their systems in place until next year. Meanwhile, the system in eastern Oregon covers a larger geographic area, is free for consumers and has been up and running for more than a year and a half.

One reason it sprang up here is that a nearby Army depot contains chemical weapons, so there is special concern about what would happen if a cloud of nerve gas escaped from the depot. That fear helped provide a pot of federal money to underwrite safety systems.

Usually, the police and fire agencies communicate just by radio, but Hermiston decided to go with a public-private partnership that established a Wi-Fi network. The police chief, Dan Coulombe, showed me the wireless computers that all police officers now carry. They can download data and receive images from video monitors - and, if nerve gas ever escaped, display the cloud's direction and speed.

Fingerprint readers are now being added to these portable devices so a police officer can almost instantly run a person's fingerprint through a multistate database. And if there's a report of a burglary, the police rushing to the scene can download floor plans of the building, live images from video monitors and information about the alarm system.

The wizard behind the system is Fred Ziari, an Iranian immigrant and Wi-Fi pioneer who runs a high-tech company in Hermiston and Portland, EZ Wireless. Mr. Ziari contracted with the local authorities to provide the Wi-Fi service, which lets consumers piggyback for nothing.

Hermiston is already starting to introduce WiMax, the next generation of technology after Wi-Fi, offering much higher speeds and greater range.

Other American towns need to follow Hermiston, not necessarily in holding "kiss the pig" contests, but in ensuring broadband Internet access as reliably as they do water or electricity. The fact is, unless you're a cowboy here in eastern Oregon, you're behind the times.

Nearly a million people were downloading each episode every Friday, writing mash notes to the creators and asking if they could buy a DVD of the collected episodes. Mainstream media picked up on the phenomenon. The Village Voice described it as '' 'Clerks' meets 'Star Wars,' '' and the BBC called it ''riotously funny'' and said it was ''reminiscent of the anarchic energy of 'South Park.' I don't know.... I'm beginning to think I should do *second* blog. One perhaps called "Of Interest To 770 Owners." This one would congregate all the stuff that is *not* directly about the 770 itself. Anyway, 99% of the below falls into the "Of Interest To..." category...

Local.com New Local Search Engine Launches
http://www.searchenginejournal.com/index.php?p=2024
>>>Keyword DNA utilizes business characteristics such as location, service area, and business-specific keywords among other data to create a unique meta-profile for over 16 million U.S. local businesses. Some search results and core data info is also supplied by Acxiom Data Services while local targeted paid search advertising is handled via ePilot (this is probably going to be one of ePilot’s largest distribution channels as ePilot is also owned by Interchange).
-- one of the things I *hate* doing on the Net is searching for *local* stuff. Perhaps this will alleviate/fix that chore? This might also be useful for travelers with the 770, looking for local stuff in their guest city.

Concurrent and GoldPocket Announce Integrated Applications for On-Demand
http://www.ecmag.net/Articles/ArticleReader.aspx?ArticleID=8341
>>>GoldPocket's advanced media solutions, combined with Concurrent's MediaHawk IMS, is designed to enable two-way interactivity with on-demand programming content, allowing consumers to customize their television viewing experience. GoldPocket technology enables users viewing on-demand programs to "telescope" to advertising, commerce capabilities, or other specialized content via "hotspots," or visual cues that are layered on top of the content. GoldPocket's StoryTeller, an interactive authoring product, allows providers to customize on-demand interfaces to reflect their content, creating these hotspots that highlight content specifically tailored to a viewer's preferences. The latest addition to Concurrent's on-demand platform, the MediaHawk Interactive Media Solution (IMS), helps service providers offer targeted promotions and advertising, taking the on-demand navigation process to an interactive level. Concurrent's MediaHawk IMS, with its in-band streaming technology, provides a solid foundation to support the interactive applications available from GoldPocket Interactive.

What Business Can Learn from Open Source
http://www.paulgraham.com/opensource.html
>>>Like open source, blogging is something people do themselves, for free, because they enjoy it. Like open source hackers, bloggers compete with people working for money, and often win. The method of ensuring quality is also the same: Darwinian. Companies ensure quality through rules to prevent employees from screwing up. But you don't need that when the audience can communicate with one another. People just produce whatever they want; the good stuff spreads, and the bad gets ignored. And in both cases, feedback from the audience improves the best work.

Squint at a wee cellphone screen while your per-month minutes go drip-drip-drip down the drain, or be at a free public WiFi hotspot viewing stuff on a 770's big screen? It seems to me that at some point A Corporate Pinstriper will wake up to the fact that cellcos and free public hotspots cannot peacefully co-exist. Then will either come the Night of the Long Knives for Free WiFi or the collapse and death of the Hold-'em-Hostage-and-Bleed-Them Typical Corporate Cellco. Keep being smug, Cellco, Inc. Back in the 1980s, there was this very popular online service called CompuServe. Why Murdoch Really Bought MySpace?
http://gigaom.com/2005/08/06/why-murdoch-bought-myspace/
>>>Much like Viacom’s CBS decided to use the broadband web to bypass cable and compete against the 24-hour news networks like CNN and FoxNews (see PaidContent’s coverage here), the acquisition of MySpace positions Murdoch to challenge the dominance of MTV in their category. I’m willing to bet that he will go even further by eventually extending the MySpace brand to include a dedicated cable & satellite network/channel. He is after all an old media guy. In fact, just a couple of weeks before News Corp. announced the deal, we all witnessed the web’s potential in this context when AOL’s webcasting audience for Live 8 outreached MTV and ABC’s ratings of the same event (details here.) Such a data point can go a long way towards justifying a $580 million price tag.

There was a post about the FBReader that said you can't install fonts in the 770. But that turns out to mean there's no installer. This information was posted on the developer list yesterday:

"The 770 uses fontconfig and freetype in the same way as any modern Linux
distribution, i.e. both TTF and Type1 fonts are supported. While there
is no interface for managing fonts on the device, putting the fonts in
~/.fonts/ will make them available to all applications."

Looks like there will be an app soon enough too.

Mas sent this to me. I decided to run it here because he makes some very interesting points (if you're perceptive, they'll jump right out; if not, move along...)

Mas would have posted it somewhere himself, but being in the UK, he is suffering net connection problems, the poor lad. (And I exterminated a Smiley you tried to sneak in, Mas!)

The Wireless Life

Concept
Ever since mobile computing began, it has been the dream of development teams and sales execs that their device would become the centre of a digital world, with people swapping information between devices in restaurants and bars or meeting up for a multiplayer game. However, PDAs and their ilk have been around since time immemorial, and it hasn’t happened. Why is this and why would the 770 succeed where so many have failed?

A question of style?
One of the main problems is public perception of such devices. When purchasing any kind of new gadget, much as people try to deny it, other people’s views will play a large part in that decision. Does it have the “wow” factor? The thing is, people’s tastes and expectations change with time and what may seem fantastic and stunning now may be yesterday’s news, all within the space of a month. So, obviously, the aesthetics of the device in question must be taken into consideration. Fortunately, the 770 doesn’t have too many issues on this point, coming in a rather nice aluminium case and having enough controls to be functional, without being cluttered.

Being a brand name is also important. When people buy a Pocket PC (the poor fools), are they more likely to get a HP one or a Fujitsu-Siemens one? When buying a phone, do people choose Sendo over Samsung? No. People associate big brands with instant recognition and plenty of support, which is another major concern; especially when buying expensive equipment. Nokia is known worldwide, even to people living in very deep caves, so this gives it an edge over lesser known rivals.

Getting Technical
It’s a well-known fact that Joe Public is as thick as turnips. Their initial reaction, when confronted with a new piece of technology to use, is an interesting mixture of embarrassment and horror, followed by a question about switching it on. This isn’t to say they want low-level equipment. What they want is cutting edge technology with a plug and play interface. This is why home computers are used a lot more for work than games. Initially, game consoles were very low-powered devices that were complicated to set-up. PCs (and CPC’s) of the time were simpler and more powerful. As time progressed though, their roles reversed, with today’s consoles taking under 2 minutes to set up and start playing, with graphics and sound that constantly push the limits. What this means for the Nokia 770 is that essentially, you need to be surfing in under 5 steps:

1) Stand or sit near Wifi point.
2) Switch on Nokia 770.
3) Press button to open Web browser.
4) Start surfing.

The slightest hint of configuring access points or IP addresses and you can wave goodbye to a third of your users instantly.

It's a May mention of the Nokia 770 from the Institute for the Future of the Book, which is interesting in and of itself, I think.

On the front page of the futureofthebook.org site is a Tools section, with the aforementioned TK3 and "sophie," which turns out to be the next-generation open-source version of what TK3 is today. Sophie will specifically be available on Linux.

And Sophie and Internet Tablets will be a killer combo: handheld multimedia easily created by anyone.

There was some anxiety about this note added recently to the Nokia website:

"The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet's software is upgradeable and currently runs on the Linux-based Internet Tablet 2005 software edition. There is a planned launch next year of an operating system upgrade – the Internet Tablet 2006 software edition – that will support additional services, including Internet telephony (VoIP) and Instant Messaging."

Nokia engineers reassured the list that the upgrade was indeed from one Linux version to a fuller Linux version.

Marcelo Oliveiro appears to be one of the Brazilian software developers who've given us Abiword and Python for the 770. I think he ported Doom, but if not at least he was the first to point us to it.

Anyway, on his blog now is a reference to the Quake 3 Arena source code, released Aug 20 under the GPL. Could this be the next 770 game? OK, Marcelo, you can do it!

On the developer's list was this note from Anderson Briglia, of the INdT/Manaus 10LE Kernel Team, about using a Nokia Bluetooth keyboard with the 770. Everyone is wondering about how the keyboard situation will be resolved, so I am reproducing his comments in full here:

>>Just to report: I tested a nokia bluetooth keyboard with 770. I can connect the devices, using bluez utility 'hidd'. The problem is that some of keypad's keys has the same keycode of keyboad's keys (eg. <enter>). When I type 'enter' on the bluetooth keyboard, the virtual keyboad appears. Another detected problem is with the application 'Notes'. It did not recognize the bluetooth keyboard and I can type something there using the virtual keyboard only. I didn't test all the applications.

>>I don't know if the maemo applications are ready to use bluetooth devices, but I think that could be a good idea to implement this support.

Here's hoping this all gets worked out before too long.

--

Plus, at nokia.com, I never noticed the Spotlight movie before. It has some information that's not exactly new, but seemed new to me, at least in the consumer venue, as far as I have noticed anyway -- or maybe it's the positioning that's new. I don't recall ever seeing lines in the commercials before like "Introducing the Nokia Linux Platform" and "This is the first product running on the Linux-based Internet Tablet 2005 software edition" and "Software is mostly open-source and the majority of the source code is available to developers" and "Access development tools at www.maemo.org".

Really selling Linux as much as the other aspects it seemed. Of course, most of the photos selling the wide range of applications showed the same single app on-screen.

Does the Nokia 770 have sex appeal?
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=4815
At Mobileread, Colin Dunstan asks "[D]oes it have the potential to replace regular PDAs to become the new e-book hardware reader of our choice? Can it even replace the notebook for wireless Web surfing? Al of the 770 Fan blog wonders too why so many of us enjoy reading up on this device. Yes, why do we?"
That's easy -- because we can feel in our bones this is the one.

Nokia and Gnome

>>The big news of the day is that Nokia has released their internet tablet. Effectively a tiny handheld computer based on Linux, Gtk+, an Opera/Gtk+ and GStreamer (I previously stated that they used WebCore/Gtk+, but I was wrong). The developer site is very interesting: Nokia contributions to Open Source project. Developer Tutorials. API docs for Hildon, their extra widgets. This is the first mass-market use of Gnome technologies, this is *very* exciting. Of course, its only missing Mono for extended productivity.
That would be big news all right. Right up there with Dewey beats Truman. I think they're jumping the gun, especially as this was posted yesterday.

A month ago I discovered that Koen Kooi had ported GpsDrive to Maemo and put up word on the original 770 ersatz blog. (Where was that? I've already lost track.)

His port of this app still hasn't shown up in the list on the wiki and I haven't heard a word from anyone interested or intrigued by it.

The question that hadn't been answered was whether the 770 would be able to take input directly from a GPS receiver, and that information is now in. Alexander responded in a comment at Koen's blog that:
>>Yes, 770 will be able to connect to the Bluetooth-equipped GPS receiver using BT Serial Port profile. All you need for that is to get a console and configure BT connection.

There's a whole load of devices listed that the software is compatible with.

Given that GpsDrive (see below) can display street maps as well as topographical maps and the 770 screen offers such detail, this seems like a good combo. Of course, if you know where you are, you can enter the information manually too.

You can see a screen capture from Koen's port (resized but still bigger than 770-screen-lifesize) in the news section of this blog:

http://www.internettablettalk.com/content/view/94/2/

GpsDrive on maemo
http://dominion.kabel.utwente.nl/koen/blog/pyblosxom.cgi/Handhelds/gpsdrive-maemo.html

You can learn more about GpsDrive from its main site:
GpsDrive
http://gpsdrive.kraftvoll.at/index.shtml
>>GpsDrive is a car (bike, ship, plane) navigation system. GpsDrive displays your position provided from your NMEA capable GPS receiver on a zoomable map, the map file is autoselected depending of the position and prefered scale. Speech output is supported if the "festival" software is running. The maps are autoselected for best resolution depending of your position and can be downloaded from Internet.

Oh, yeah, the website says you can download NASA satellite images for this. I don't think the image in Koen's example is one of those. Or is it? If you look at the Italy photo at GpsDrive, it's very similar.

Slim pickings today. I may go slightly orthogonal if it stays this way, but I'm sticking with just the one blog.

>>If you have eReader or MobiPocket books, for example, how convinced are you that you'll be able to use them when you move to a linux handheld like the Nokia 770, for example?

This is a perennial discussion topic, in this case combining both computer formats and media/multimedia formats, including one close to my interests, e-book formats.

And Al at 770fan (http://770fan.blogspot.com/2005/08/also-while-i-was-looking-around-at.html) picked up on our discussion of Koen's GpsDrive port and did some poking around of his own there, discovering Koen's mention of Matthias Steinbauer's GPE-calendar port to Maemo. OK, I confess -- I don't want to think of the 770 as a PDA. I'm guilty of passing over that one in silence.

But really, which is more exciting, another calendar app on another device, or connecting a GPS receiver to the 770's 225-ppi, 800-pixel wide screen, both of which you can carry around with you? I rest my defense.

Someone in the comments had repeated the rumor that the 770 is really slow; tintachina's full response was "Slow... It was bound to have some problem :( The ideal would be to wait for the second edition, but the reality is that there's nothing that measures up in the marketplace, not even the PSP." Plus, as we all know, that "really slow" rumor isn't terribly credible.

Long, interesting post here on the blog *Michael Parekh on IT*
On Sony PSP as a Web Browsing Platform
http://mp.blogs.com/mp/2005/08/on_sony_psp_a_w.html
>>Regular readers know of my never-ending quest for the perfect, on-the-go wireless web tablet/PDA, that can be used for regular internet activities anywhere in the house, and preferably on the go, using Wi-Fi, EV-DO and/or Cellular networks.

Following Russell Beattie's enthusiastic reports of surfing with the PSP, Parekh jumped into the water and found it less than pleasant:

>>[T]he key problems [of the PSP]: no keyboard, cryptic interface, and memory hog.
...
>>It takes a lot of add-ons to make the PSP a viable internet browsing device, and by the time you do so, you've got something like the Pepperpad . . . that's to be priced around $850
...
>>Or you could buy the PSP for $230, add a keyboard when it's out for $50, then add 2GB of memory, assuming it works, for another $200, and you've got a barely passable internet surfing device for around $500.

The reason I'm posting this report here and not in the sporadic PSP forum is because Parekh wonders why Beattie liked the PSP so much when he panned the Nokia 770 on its announcement.

Of course, we know that the 770's display is better suited for browsing and that the on-screen keyboard works better on its bigger display. And its UI is based on existing approaches, not going its own way. When you add that to Beattie's instant-on gratification, I think Parekh is going to like the 770 a lot.

Parekh concludes by asking if the PSP is really "an internet tablet? Not yet." And you can see he's ready for a real one. Like the Nokia 770. Coming out 3Q 2005.

As reported here at itT (http://www.internettablettalk.com/content/view/95/2/) (and simultaneously at Postneo 2.0 (http://www.postneo.com/2005/08/31/nokia-770-gains-fcc-approval) ), the FCC has given its approval for the 770 to be sold in the U.S.

Among the documents filed with the FCC is a user's manual. And among the many warnings contained in this manual is the following:

"Parts of the device are magnetic. ... Do not place credit cards or other magnetic storage media near the device, because information stored on them may be erased."

Does this mean sticking a 770 in a purse or backpack next to a wallet might kerfluddle one's credit cards? How far apart do you have to be not be "near" -- that is, to be safe?

Or is this no more dangerous than a Palm, say?

Where to start?
Nokia 770 Gets FCC Approval
http://www.internettablettalk.com/content/view/95/2/
Oh, right, I just linked to this page in the previous post (smack on the side of the head)! Well, it's big enough news, being the first external event we can tie to the release.

Reggie writes that he's been trying to pin down whether the unit in the US would have 802.11g as well as 802.11b, because for the longest time the nokiausa.com didn't say that (the nokia.com site did). When he saw yesterday that the information had changed, he thought to check the FCC data and bingo! he discovered the news.

Websites with interest in this sort of thing and presumably mainstream media are being sent review copies, so you should see lots of articles about this soon.

Hey, what about developers? When are they getting devices?

Of course, Planet Maemo (http://planet.maemo.org) had picked it up, and Nokia 770 blog (http://nokia770.com/) chimed in, with some follow-up this morning about review copies being sent out. And Teleread (http://www.teleread.org/blog/?p=3510) ran a blurb about it, with a graphic taken from the user manual. (Hey! I wrote it. I know where it came from.)

Mike's got bigger visions in sight and he advised us he won't be returning to write this blog.

Actually I predict he won't be able to go cold turkey, and we'll see sporadic contributions from him. (This is a safe prediction, because he made it first.)

He'll give us another full report of the 770 in the near future. Hey, Fondling the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet (http://jkontherun.blogs.com/jkontherun/2005/06/jkontherun_gues.html) is what clued in most people to the potential of this device!

That and his incredible posts in this ersatz blog and its predecessor location.

Thank you, Mike. You were the first site I turned to every morning -- and then throughout the day to get my fix on 770 info.

Still eagerly awaiting some news. But release is still listed as 3Q with no further details.

The countdown continues: 28 days till Sept 30, last day of 3Q.

And, hey, it's been one week since the FCC approved the 770, and Nokia USA still reports: The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission ("FCC")* Get with the act, guys!

Let's hope the day's news are real news. But a rehash to start --

Gizmodo:
Nokia 770 Gets FCC Nod
http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/nokia/nokia-770-gets-fcc-nod-123563.php
>>The 770 would be perfect as a coffee-table type appliance for quick Internet browsing while you’re watching TV, or if you prefer, while you’re on the toilet. And, just for everyone keeping score at home, it already plays Doom.

At last, somebody who doesn't use euphemisms, like Bill Gates did talking about people awkwardly trying to open their laptops in elevators. Come on, Bill, it was the men's room, wasn't it.

Anyway, the coffee table reference in this report makes me think this was rewritten from Mobile Scraper. Or are they both referring to an unreferenced ur-text? At any rate, they properly credit Reggie and itT for bringing their attention to Doom.

And some nice, informed speculation --
Blogzilla:
Mini Mozilla accelera la marcia [ Mozilla Minimo accelerates the march]
http://blogzilla.altervista.org/2005/09/mini-mozilla-accelera-la-marcia.html
>>The rapidity with which the development of Minimo is proceeding seems to strengthen the hypothesis that behind its plan hides one sponsor of exception like Nokia. According to some voices, in fact, the giant of the telefonini would be interested in the small browser of Mozilla house for its Internet Tablet. (Translation by Babelfish.)

There's apparently an aggressive development roadmap that's been mapped out for the Mozilla Minimo browser project this fall. It hasn't escaped people's attention that Minimo is the GPE browser, and GPE is running on our Internet Tablet platform. Is Nokia funding this push? Who would be surprised if they were?

>>(I) find the concept behind the Windows Tablet PC platform quite interesting. I think that, someday in the future, more and more computers will have built in touch screen interfaces that allow us to work more directly with the computer. In fact, I think the Nokia 770 is a great example of just such a device, and I can’t wait to buy one. It’s small, extremely portable and easy to use, with integrated wifi, web browsing, email and IM. Add in the built-in expandability to do a lot more because of its Linux architecture, and I suspect that it will be the perfect addition to many connected homes.

Lots to catch up on, which I'll do over the course of the day --

Russell Beattie:
The Future of Mobility is Linux
http://www.russellbeattie.com/notebook/1008610.html
>>Okay, I’ve had an opinion change I’d like to announce. I’m betting that the future of mobility will be Linux, and not Symbian, Windows or anything else.
...
>>First I’ll start with the final epiphany and work backwards. The latest news I’ve seen about the Nokia 770 is that it’s going to have a host of applications ready for it at launch, including VoIP software, streaming media, chat applications, Doom, etc. The thing that’s so amazing about this is that the 770 is essentially the *same exact hardware* that’s on my Nokia 6680, yet the development pace for the 770 is way more rapid. In addition, there’s at least a half a dozen blogs and bloggers dedicated to the device, and it hasn’t even launched yet. This shows the power of an open environment and the draw of Linux and its fans.

Big change of heart here, with all the reasons laid out in detail. He's talking Linux on mobile phones, but many of his points apply to the "ultra mobile"/"internet tablet"/web pad niche.

MyBlog:
Why Nokia 770?
http://bonte.co.uk/myBlog/?p=13
>>A lot of discussion is taking place on the positioning of the Nokia 770. However, in my opinion, it’s overwhelmingly clear what the single reason of existence of the Nokia 770 is: internet viewing at full width of 800 pixels avoiding horizontal browsing. No other (small) device is curently offering this: highest resolution is limited to a width of 640 pixels (pocket pc, series 80, series 90,…) which all still require horizontal browsing. And this comes at a price which is unlikely to be beaten by any pocket pc at a higher future resolution…!
MyBlog:
On Mobility
http://bonte.co.uk/myBlog/?p=12
>>There is a bewildering choice in UI variations, form factors, size, weight, features,… demonstrating that mobility takes on a lot of different meanings for different people, or rather showing the restless quest for the successful UI / form factor…time wil tell who the winner(s) are…
>>However, it is possible to define 3 categories who will most probably prevail.
...
>>3. Small internet tablet (Wifi + BT) > focus on display (minimum 800 pixels wide) for internet viewing
>>Linux or Windows? Winner : Linux due to small footprint and efficiency

Things are becoming clearer to a lot of people, it seems.

McLaren should be open!
http://jaaksi.blogspot.com/2005/09/mclaren-should-be-open.html
>>I tried to get my 770 on wifi at the Monza track. All the networks were closed. I think McLaren should let 770 users in! A friend of mine Mikko Valimaki (http://www.valimaki.org/) suggested last week in Helsingin Sanomat (a Finnish newspaper) that everybody should leave their wifi networks open. If we dare to drive a car, we should dare to let others use our access points for free. Risks are much smaller and it costs much less than driving a car. Well, I've always kept my wifi open for anybody who happens to need it.
>>McLaren didn't.

It might sound like special pleading from a 770 manager/architect, but I look at it the other way -- people thinking this way at Nokia have acted on their beliefs in their design of the Internet Tablet.

BTW, I agree.
