Cannot transfer >4gb files onto N900?

Hi all,
I was trying to upload this movie file into my N900 it is 4.35 gigs using mass storage mode through my usb cable, but apparantly the N900 says the file is way too big for the phone. I looked at my phone right away and it says it has plenty of space for it. Does anyone else know? I tried googling and some say on hard drives that are fat 32 it wont transfer anything bigger than 4gigs? I dont know anyone have any suggestions?

The MyDocs partition is FAT32. The filesystem itself limits single-file sizes to 4GB (32 bits = 4GB).

The only way around it is to re-format it to ext2/3 or some other filesystem that allows larger files, but then you wouldn't be able to easily use Windows or OSX to transfer files in mass-storage mode.

Short answer: there's not an easy way to fix it, but there is a way.

The MyDocs partition of the internal memory card is vfat so has a 4gb filesize limitation.

the MyDocs folder is on a FAT32 partition, so this is indeed the reason why you can't use files > 4GB.
a rather advanced solution would be to repartion/reformat the storage.

Or re-encode the video at a lower resolution or bitrate. I usually get a full 90 minute movie down to 1gb at 3000 with h264

Even my encoded 1080p movie just got 2GB.

buy micro SD and formwat with exfat32? might work

try copy the file from network share instead. Using Tversity or something similar. It work!

Maxximus cool, can you explain how to copy from network share? Do i install tversity and use it like itunes? And copy it over?

thats a common problem for all hard disk drives with fat32. not n900 problem.

How would copying from a network help with a filesystem limitation?
