No, and I filed a bug about it (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3910) a long time ago.

Umm... We are working on it ;) (the support for live wallpapers)

konttori
2010-02-24, 20:24
It's going to allow any window (even xv) to be either in front (with transparency) or in the background of the home screen. you will also receive clicks. So, you can develop now and when we release the support, you can convert your window to be a live wallpaper pretty quickly. Happy hacking!

There is already a "live-wallpaper" application in extras-devel but I haven't tested it yet.
Is that yours?

Got it installed, it has a sample live wallpaper, but it doesn't seem to be working properly (might be because of the changes in PR1.2).
If anyone wants to try it out here you go.

If it says something about dependencies apt-get -f install.

Not responsible for any damage that happens :)

MohammadAG

It adds a live wallpaper as a background, it has a city + moving train sample.
It doesn't work properly on PR1.1.1 since it requires PR1.2, but when the background gets blurred the static background is shown (so it won't appear in the menu or when the status bar is opened).
Try it, it shouldn't hard the device, much :P (jk)

may i ask what is meant by live wallpaper?, does this mean like a video?.I only ask because i once saw an app running on an android handset that refreshed the desktop from a webcam.Pretty cool i thought considering all the free to watch webcams on the go.

lcuk
2010-04-12, 16:12
technically it can be anything :)
its just another method of using the background area of the desktop
developers can use it for live whole desktop effects or just for changing a picture every now and then.

Hasn't xfree86/freedesktop.org always been able to run apps in the 'root' of the desktop (that is, where your desktop image normally shows up). Desktop wallpaper in X was always a matter of simply loading a graphical viewer as root to show a desktop image. Just not understanding why, if the N900 is now running xorg, that this seems challenging instead of trivial.

Hi guys,

This is my second post on the board and I came over to share a little tool that I have stumbled upon that I thought might be cool if it could be implimented on maemo some how. Anyways this thread seems more appropiate for it I guess?

It is appears to be a simple HTML/Java tool for animated backgrounds and banners for panaramic images with little interaction features.

http://www.spritely.net/documentation/

My first thaought was an Aquirium desktop of sorts. Seems pretty cool. IMO

I just saw this video of a animated wallpaper running on the N900, I just wanted to share my excitement, It is probably bad for the battery and performance but at least you can show off to your android 2.1 friends with animated backgrounds!

I still dont know if its loopalbe, gonna try it now

Just imagine a matrix one with actual falling glyphs! :)

If many objects are moving on screen hildon-home use less 40% CPU
One object use about 3-6% of CPU power.

tried replacing my transitions.ini file and changing the theme but the problem remains, *** you can see from the pics its almost impossible to see the menu text now, and im sure this started when i installed the debs, did that by opening the debs with app manager, and they self installed

also noticing after installing:
live_wallpaper_0.1_armel.deb @4.60MB
live_wallpaper_0.2_armel.deb @3.72MB
live_wallpaper_0.3_armel.deb @3.71MB

i only have the option of uninstalling
1 file in app manager: livewallpaper @4.6MB

wondering where the other 7.43MB is and why i cant uninstall it
maybe if i can find the location i can manually delete it

cant really be anything but live wallpaper causing the problem because i havent installed anything new for weeks, and the problem only started after installing those debs

The blur is controlled by transitions.ini.
Check that you replaced it as root.

leetut
2010-04-16, 15:48
yeah i did it with winscp so no need for root, also adjusted blur in transition control app to 100%, still no blur on task switcher or menu

lcuk
2010-04-16, 15:50
leetut,
you know using winscp to change system components causes complications and you ARE logging in as root to do it.
since nobody else has had problems and you are the only person mucking with transitions and have transitions issues i would hazard that those or something along those lines are the cause more than anything.

This is why I suggested in Brainstorm a few months ago that someone write a program that toggles off or on all icons at once on the desktops so we can gaze at our beautiful backgrounds.

Remember that we can theoretically have up to nine desktops. I'd like to watch that train running thru all of them!

this looks fantastic!

what about cpu-load? does it generate a lot of system load (hence affecting battery life)?

and how is it done? is it displaying a flash-applet in background or just rapidly changing pictures?

is it possible that it will at some time display random letters instead of showing the same letters in every column?

Switching tasks is now very slow as it brings the live wallpaper back into focus.
As soon as I installed it the theme was applied and there were no extra menu options to change the theme let alone turn it off.
I had to deinstall it and then it stopped.
A nice idea, but after 2 days I've seen enough of it. It's just a little bit too heavy on the performance and kills overal UI responsiveness.

Thanks for the new version.

Without rich animation, after each screenlock the Matrix will have moved one step forwards. Only with rich animation it works as expected, but I guess that uses more power?

We will redesign the behavior in Matrix theme when "rich animation" is off. Matrix will not move.

It will be done in version 0.4.1 today.

I just installed the .deb directly from:
https://garage.maemo.org/frs/download.php/7967/live-wallpaper_0.4_armel.deb

It's shows under a "dpkg -l" output to be version 0.4, however when I run it and click on the "About" button it reads as version 0.2 and has none of the 0.4 feature enhancements.

Ok, I just found the optional theme options under the settings application's Live Wallpaper sub-menu.

So I do see the updated themes and they work, but the app still reports it's version as 0.2 instead of 0.4 and in the widgets settings there are only the two original themes.

1. LiveWallpaper eats a battery only in active mode.
2. Click into right corner of display in Desktop Edit Mode
3. I'm sorry. I forgot to remove this icon from the package. I will fix it today.
4. Yes. This is right behavior

Vlad.

Just notices a very tiny small text like place in the right bottom corner.
The left one is to get in the app settings and the right one to close..
After I close it, no way of getting it back and running..
Can't you add an active and non-active tick option in settings?

@cddiede:

The last version installed from the get go for me...
No need for dpkg -i command.
I have 3 themes as an option (Berlin, Modern and Matrix).

I'm really loving this application. But I can't find a Vote link for it on the garage page:
http://maemo.org/packages/package_instance/view/fremantle_extras-devel_free_armel/live-wallpaper/0.4.2/

Where can I vote this up? I see some votes down for it where people complain that it shouldn't go into Extras because it runs down your battery.

What a load. It's not a malfunction when a graphically intensive app uses up battery power, I mean what the hell do they expect?

Also, I see down votes due to the voter's personal taste in the default wallpapers. Again, total crap. Personal aesthetics have no bearing on the functionality that htis app offers.

If an app is broken or harmful, then vote it down, but just because it's not an app that you may choose to install on your N900, don't rob other people the chance to try it by voting to keep it out of the Extras repository!!!

Just a suggestion, although one that might be hard to implement since it surely has to do with hildon-desktop.
Instead of moving the desktops, why not just move the widgets when the live wallpaper is active?
That way you can always see the wallpaper without putting a lot of load on the device (be it the CPU or the DSP)

Thanks again. ;)

Also how hard would it be to add random movements or objects to these live wallpapers?

for example

A fishtank with 3 or 4 random fish swimming in it (nothing looped)

or

Lava lamp effect with smooth transition of different colours in the background.

idea

(accelerometer controlled lava) yep i know it will drain the battery.:(

@Vlad:

you can get Virtua Girls HD to run on this as well.
It is a program for the PC and gets sexy babes running on your desktop...

There was a program made in Python for the 3rd edition Symbian..

Perhaps also in here...

To keep the size down I think you should make several releases, so we can choose our own lay-out.
Perhaps add an internet gallery option to download some more background animations

the live background is a tweak to existing desktop widget code.
ie, if you have already written a fremantle widget, it should be adjustable to work as a background.
grab the source of one of the existing live backgrounds and see if you can understand it yourself, if you can then you aren't waiting any longer..

BTW, that Super Mario thing is very easy. It is just a simple video of a speedrun of Super Mario.

Anyways, Its sad to see that this hasnt progressed much. Things IMO that are missing:

* Video support
* Weather/time interactive (You see a city as the background and as real time progresses, the sun/moon moves with daylight and nighttime coming into play and if it is really raining in your city, it will start to rain in the background. Also things like the forth of July, you see fireworks, etc)
* More than 1 wallpaper for multiple desktops (can be expanded to the above idea as multiple time zones/cities)

I know we have live wallpaper ala city scenes and xsnow, but I have also been talking to the devs who implemented the live wallpaper support and got a few hints for prospective devs:

There is also the test program which could be easier to read than xsnow:
http://maemo.gitorious.org/fremantle-hildon-desktop/hildon-desktop/blobs/master/tests/test-live-bg.c

we need to organise packaging really to make this a fully usable core example for others to base their designs off.

vlad,
hope you are well and the heatwave isn't getting you too much ;)

are you having any implementation issues which we could need to address, please do not hesitate to file bugs and mail me about them, we can discuss how to handle them with you :)

I have heard that other live-bg items may be in the pipeline too, so the smoother and more integrated we can get this, the better.

Video wallpaper looks great, fantastic work.

Is there a time limit on the length of the video?

and also what video formats does it use?

i noticed on the video you used mp4.

Hi Vlad and first of all congrats for the great work. Now I would like to ask to please stop the normal development and focus on optimization for a while, I believe it's critical! I personally disabled it right after I installed it because it was unbearable, especially if you have a number of widgets on the desktop!

Easy - just download a video of super mario play and put that in as a wallpaper.

Grab that - strip the sound, grab the part you want .... badabing

try refreshing your app manager by disabling and then enabling the extras repo.

any chance of a rippling water effect desktop, used to use a program called ultimate desktop on windows xp, with a reflective puddle that had the odd ripple as an invisible droplet dropped into it in random places, you could select from clouds as a reflection or a moonlit night sky...

i tested 0.7 yesterday. i noticed that when i turn on all 4 live wallpapers doesn't matter same or different, there would be at least 1 desktop thats not working or buggier. for example, if i turn on matrix live on all 4 desktops, 1 of the desktops would be blank or have blank gabs or the matrix symbols just turn into 1 big green pixel. its not always the same desktops having this problem, if i reset the problematic desktop, the next one will get the same problem.

i couldn't get xsnow to work either. videos r very laggy especially when not using native themes. n overall it looks like it needs some optimizing, a good way to kill my battery as the cpu usage constantly hover over 50%

Sorted out the choppy video playback problem.

Live wallpaper seems to like an mp4 encoded file best.

So i converted some .mov files to mp4 set at 800x480 resolution at 30 fps with bitrate set to 1200 kbps

i used 'super' video converter and the results are good.

Try these samples i converted from the link below.

SUNRISE CLOUDS WAVES MP4 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0QT4YXS2)

2010-08-05, 00:43
yes thats what I mean Bazza... vids dont work very well at all... :(

let us know how you go, as Ive found some awesome vids (youtube search: liquid loop)

Bazza
2010-08-05, 01:36
Sorted it

I set the fps and bitrate to convert too high and live wallpaper didn't seem to like it, i could have pushed it more but wanted to share what i have found first.

The link to my samples are in post 240 on previous page

So, Ive found a shitful bug in v0.7

If you have a video set as a background, you cannot connect N900 to PC in mass storage mode - it says "cannot connect - device storage in use"

If you disable video bg, it will then connect no problems..

I have verified this and it sucks.

affirmative! The live matrix bg with accelerometer. So you can turn it and still get the bg falling lol. I like

@f2thak

For a wordaround, move the video file on /home/user instead of /home/user/MyDocs and it won't complain again :)
