Right, this time it'll be a useful thread for those who wish to move more stuff related to locale.

If you are an English user, it might be worthy to opt or remove other locales to save further rootfs space.

Some interesting stuff I found:

/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10 - 4.8MB (I have loadapplet installed..this need to be optify?)

/usr/share/locale/ru_RU - 588KB
/usr/share/locale/it_IT - 487KB
/usr/share/locale/fr_FR - 486KB
/usr/share/locale/fr_CA - 482KB
/usr/share/locale/es_MX - 479KB
/usr/share/locale/es_ES - 479KB
/usr/share/locale/pl_PL - 477KB
/usr/share/locale/pt_PT - 476KB
/usr/share/locale/de_DE - 476KB
/usr/share/locale/nl_NL - 470KB
/usr/share/locale/fi_FI - 470KB
/usr/share/locale/sv_SE - 464KB
/usr/share/locale/en_GB - 461KB
/usr/share/locale/cs_CZ - 459KB
/usr/share/locale/no_NO - 457KB
/usr/share/locale/en_US - 450KB
/usr/share/locale/da_DK - 436KB

Remove locales you don't need would save at least another 7.6MB (I'm only keeping en_GB) I believe the next update (PR1.2) will bring more locales in, so might be worth checking this again and remove the locales you don't need.

Similar to fonts

/usr/share/fonts/chinese - 1.8MB
/usr/share/fonts/arabic - 758KB

I had considered doing that but was wondering how hazardous that was.

... on a tangentially related note, does anyone know where I could look for info on generating new locale files like that?

I suggest downloading Storage Usage
Which is similar to treesize

I have removed the unnecessary locales and been using the device for a while now without any issues.

Hi!

Thanks for that info.

Can I also delete the

usr/share/am
usr/share/ang
usr/share/bn
etc.

files?

Most of them only contain a "vte.mo" file others have @ leafpad and/or mc.mo files in there.

Maybe we should just port the 'localepurge' application from Debian sources. The only issue is presumably the 'debconfig' step it runs when it installs, but that's just to have you edit the /etc/locale.nopurge configuration file.
