Hi!
I've posted a second video about Sygic, where you can see fullscreen-mode, portrait-mode and no warnings at the start.

http://www.youtube.com/zehjotkah#p/u/0/Ap68fgJmCmo

Also I've posted this How-To on my blog in german, too.

http://zehjotkah.blogspot.com/2010/03/sygic-modden.html

Fullscreen-mode:
open X-Terminal and type in the following:
root
vi /usr/share/applications/hildon/sygic.desktop

move cursor with arrow buttons.
click button "a" for editing mode.
change
Exec=/opt/sygic/Drive/Maemo/drive -cwd=/home/user/MyDocs/Drive/Maemo
to
Exec=/opt/sygic/Drive/Maemo/drive -cwd=/home/user/MyDocs/Drive/Maemo -rfull
click Esc on screen for quit editing mode
type in
:w
and hit enter to save

Next enable all menu entries (and therefore the portrait mode) and disable the warning.

Connect your N900 with PC.
Open the 32GB memory (for example G: )
Change to this directory:G:\Drive\Maemo
rename menu.ini for example to menuold.ini.
save and close

open settings.ini.
search for showSafetyMsg=true and change it to showSafetyMsg=falseAttention! There are two lines, both have to end with =false.
save end close

If you have problems with lags read the post from D-Iivil:
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=574624&postcount=16

If you want to rearrange your menu (for example the quit button on the first page) check out the post from dread123:
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=575021&postcount=42

If you want to change the colors of the menu as well as the map colors, check out another post from dread123:
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=575224&postcount=55

If you want to remove the zoom-in and zoom-out buttons on the top check out another post from dread123:
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=576216&postcount=79

If you need to replace the sygic.desktop file (if you've made a mistake) and you know how to replace it: here is a clean, fullscreen-enabled one:
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=574626&postcount=30

If you want to change the color of the line assistant, check out the post from basp:
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=601224&postcount=173

If you want to change the splashscreen, check out the post from YoDude:

Have fun with Sygic!

Why do you need to connect the phone to a PC to edit the settings.ini file?
It's right there in /home/user/MyDocs/Drive/Maemo, you can edit it using leafpad or vi, you can also easily make a backup of it using the cp command. Why this craziness?

because it's easier for the average user.
Users who know how to edit it with vi don't need my how-to...
The first thing I'm editing with vi, because it's more difficult to get access to these file with your PC than editing with vi.

you can use the maps from the symbian version, but please discuss here only the Sygic mods (there are far more things to mod, like map-color and so on) and use the other thread for non-mod related questions.

How do you change the voices with different one (like TomTom can change to 'celebrity' voices) I prefer a female english speaking voice to the male speaking voice

zehjotkah

There is a Sygic Voice Packager, which can be used to record own voices.

Has anyone been able to set higher volume? The device can do better... Maybe sygic cannot use highest volume somehow... And fm transmitter isn't the answer for this.

You can do it (there's unpackers for TomTom and packers for Sygic) but apparently there's not a match up on sound files between the two (Sygic uses more sounds). Not sure this means in practice though.

The lag/delay disappeared completely after changing following in settings.ini

PositionFiltering=false (default is true)

The movement of the arrow isn't as smooth but it is definitely more accurate. (accurate to within 5m)

Works for me (it's the globe button on the bottom right of the keyboard).

Thanks ! changing menu and loosing warning site worked fine for me.
I have another problem:
Sygic uses lots of power. In found it necessary to continuously connect the device to the charger while driving.
In portrait mode the connection for charging is on top of the device - which causes the charging cable hanging around stupidly, and possible damage to the connector.
Is it possible to flip over portrait mode 180 degrees ?

you can install camkeyd, which enables pressing the cam-button half the way (if the camera-slider is closed) to open the taskswitcher.

There's an app in extras-devel called camkeyd (or the like) which lets you use the camera button as task-switcher.

Mine keeps defaulting to km's instead of miles on start up, even if I have previously changed the distance units in the regional settings.

I have changed the default unit setting from kilometers to miles by changing the unit value in the settings ini but this doesn't seem to have made an difference and it still starts up again in km's.

Is there anything I can do to change this?

Thanks

you have to close Sygic via the menu. Not via the X. Then it saves every preferences you've made.

Hm. That's actually a bug in Sygic. An X11 application closed via the 'x' in the window manager should behave as when closed with 'Close' in the menu. The 'x' isn't a kill -9.

Want to re-arrange the buttons on sygic- i moved my "exit"button so it was one front page??

...just navigate to res, skins. then open application file with note pad or a text editor.

Then control and F = find and type in menu.main.exit

it will then search and should come up with 2 instances of the above text. all i did was then copy the first instance and paste further up in the "menu" section and swapped one over to its old place-if that makes sense and then save.

Under the Menu section -you will see this

menu.main.navigateTo
menu.main.browseMap
menu.main.alternative
menu.main.memorize
menu.main.extras
menu.main.exit
menu.main.viewRoute

menu.main.itinerary
menu.main.managePoi
menu.main.gpsStatus
menu.main.settings
menu.main.exitmenu.main.extras
menu.main.traffic"

Just copy menu.main.exit and paste within the first 6
---
menu.main.navigateTo
menu.main.browseMap
menu.main.alternative
menu.main.memorize
menu.main.exit
menu.main.viewRoute

menu.main.itinerary
menu.main.managePoi
menu.main.gpsStatus
menu.main.settings
menu.main.extras
menu.main.traffic"

like that and then save

restarted sygic and now have exit button on front page!

works with editing the whole menu..move whatever where you want to.

auto-rotation should be available within next week or so...:p

quick mod for anyone that wants to assign rotation to their "down arrow key"

restart app and now you can change rotation by pressing Down Arrow instead of going through the menu :)

ok if you want to remove the zoom in and zoom out buttons that are on top, you will need to delte couple lines from the application file in res folder
just remember i cant be held accountable if you mess it up.best thing to do is make a copy of it and keep safe :)

look for this section :

<class id="naviControl" xsi:type="classControl"

Then just delete the following lines :

zoomInBitmap="_b.zoomIn"
zoomInBitmap_="_b.zoomIn_"

zoomOutBitmap="_b.zoomOut"
zoomOutBitmap_="_b.zoomOut_"

then start the application and both buttons are removed..you can still zoom using arrow keys if you wish- just gives you little more room at top :)

any idea how to turn portrait mode for 180 deg ?

I am going to attach the n900 to my car, and i want the cable on the bottom, not at the top of the device.

Any ideas ?

Hi Stefan!

That is currently not supported afaik.
Sygic is working on rotation based on the accelerometer. Maybe the logic portrait modus is then supported, too.

Want to re-arrange the buttons on sygic- i moved my "exit"button so it was one front page??

...just navigate to res, skins. then open application file with note pad or a text editor.

Then control and F = find and type in menu.main.exit

it will then search and should come up with 2 instances of the above text. all i did was then copy the first instance and paste further up in the "menu" section and swapped one over to its old place-if that makes sense and then save.

Under the Menu section -you will see this

menu.main.navigateTo
menu.main.browseMap
menu.main.alternative
menu.main.memorize
menu.main.extras
menu.main.exit
menu.main.viewRoute

menu.main.itinerary
menu.main.managePoi
menu.main.gpsStatus
menu.main.settings
menu.main.exitmenu.main.extras
menu.main.traffic"

Just copy menu.main.exit and paste within the first 6
---
menu.main.navigateTo
menu.main.browseMap
menu.main.alternative
menu.main.memorize
menu.main.exit
menu.main.viewRoute

menu.main.itinerary
menu.main.managePoi
menu.main.gpsStatus
menu.main.settings
menu.main.extras
menu.main.traffic"

like that and then save

restarted sygic and now have exit button on front page!

works with editing the whole menu..move whatever where you want to.

Just tried this but now Sygic just keeps crashing every time i try to run it. Any ideas?

That is not possible so easily, because they want to have the same software on all platforms. Because of that they have to stay with windowed mode only, too, because the Ovi Store requires a easy way to change windows.

But I think, that would be the ideal solution, too.
Sygic: please think about it again, you would made happy a lot of N900 users.

Oh and think the french voice algorythm is ****ed up.

Numbers shown on the signs dont match with what the french voice says...
:-(

it says the same for 61 and 71.
and says "soixante-un" instead of "soixante-et-un"
same with 21 : "vingt-un" instead of "ving-et-un"
it also says "soixante-et-sept" instead of "soixante-sept" for 67

its all ****ed up ... :(

So just to point the guy in charge of the french voice in the right direction , this is how french works for numbers (just the special cases):

11 onze
12 douze
13 treize
14 quatorze
15 quinze
16 seize
17 dix-sept
18 dix-huit
19 dix-neuf
...
21 vingt-ET-un
22,23,24, etc... vingt-deux, vingt-trois, vingt-quatre ...

31 trente-ET-un
32, 33 ,34 etc... trente-deux, trente-trois, trente-quatre

ETC....

71 soixante-ET-ONZE (60 et 11)
72 soixante-douze .... treize ... quatorze (60-12) (60-13) (60-14) etc...

80 quatre-vingt (4x20)
81 quatre-vingt-un (no "ET" !! )
82 , 83 ,84 .... quatre-vingt-deux, quatre-vingt-trois, quatre-vingt-quatre

...

90 ,91,92, quatre-vingt-dix ...-onze ...-douze etc...

How to stop Sygic Sounds showing up on mediplayer

If like me you hate seeing Sygic sound files on your media player you can stop media player indexing it.

You need to edit the tracker config file (/home/user/.config/tracker/tracker.cfg)

look for the line

# List of directory roots NOT to index and NOT to watch (separator=;)

NoWatchDirectory=

and at the end put: $HOME/MyDocs/Res/;

also if you do not want picodrive mega CD games mp3 showing do:

$HOME/MyDocs/.documents/PicoDrive/;$HOME/MyDocs/Res/;

then

in terminal "tracker-processes -r" (it will take while for phone to find your normal audio/video files)

This is not for every one so becareful when doing this, if your are not sure how to please do not attempt it.

Hi Sygic modders!

I just had an idea but not sure yet how this turns out.

The problem is: When listening to music in the car one often cannot understand what a navigation system is saying.

Possible mod/solution:
I have seen there is a voice packager for sygic. So theoretically it should be possible to unpack the current voices, and add traffic announcement sounds to those files. Then, set the radio up to listen for TA announcements on the N900s FM transmitters frequency to make TA enabled radios switch to the navigation sounds and then back to CD/MP3/Whatever.

I have not tested this and don't know if it would be possible to do this with sygic audio files or if they are split up in tons of smaller files and making this proposal impossible. Anyone with experience with RDS, TA, Sygic and so on could make some statement about this?

Better yet, portable navigation system manufacturers like Sygic could/should make use of the TA feature for exactly this use-case.

You'd do this with pairing the FM transmitter frequency on the N900 with the FM frequency on your radio.

The problem I have found with doing this is that when the sygic voice starts to speak sometimes - there is a slight delay before it comes through the car radio and so misses the first part of the instruction.

Whether that is an issue with my Vauxhall Car Radio or a general one I don't know.

No delay in hearing the instruction on my (old) Vauxhall. Are you playing anything continuous via the the FM transmitter ? - the FM transmitter will turn off in there is nothing playing, and may be slow in starting when it occasionally gets something to play. I usually have some music playing from my N900 and Cygic briefly pauses this to play any instructions/warnings. Works great for me. If you don't want music playing, someone suggested recording a silent mp3 and playing this in a loop in the music player.

Does using media player at the same time not crash the phone? I usually use panucci as most of the music I play is podcasts or long sets and every time the phone crashes after two or three commands from Sygic and I have to take the battery out. They're looking into lower the volume of the music from the media player and not pause it. But that isn't so easy.

I'm quoting:

Sygic is using pulseadio to playing sounds, and I think, there is possibility to play only one sound at time - you request permissions for playing (what means stop playing other sounds), then you play sound, then you release permissions (other sounds may play).
But as I said, sound playing will be redesign, someday...

What does that mean? Sygic is using pulseaudio to play the sounds, like the mediaplayer. With pulseaudio it isn't possible to play two sounds at one time. (If anyone have a idea, you're VERY welcome). You can test it by open lets say glTron and then open the mediaplayer. Sound from glTron will stop as soon as your music starts. After that test the same thing with glTron and SuperTux. There it is possible because they're using a different system, afaik.

Therefore Sygic want to redesign the whole sound-stack someday.

For example, when I stop my car at the middle of an intersection, the middle of the arrow is at the intersection, but the tip of the arrow is already past the intersection. How would I change the settings in the "settings.ini" file's parameter to make the point of the arrow to be right at the intersection?

That's a pretty big pile of BS. (btw, this is the second time they've shown little to no knowledge of basic linux/maemo components... the first was the fact that they originally inteded to split the map packages into many small pieces so they fit into /opt, instead of using MyDocs for the map data...)

one of the main advantages of pulseaudio is the fact that it's a sound _server_, capable of receiving and mixing several audio sources.
you can even send the output of several pulseaudio servers to one single audio sink over a network...

click here (http://wiki.maemo.org/Documentation/Maemo_5_Developer_Guide/Architecture/Multimedia_Domain#PulseAudio) for more info on the maemo specific implementation of pulseaudio.

sygic was probably talking about ALSA, one of the oldest sound architectures for linux. with alsa, it is indeed impossible to play two sources simultaneously. but then, that's why we have PA as the default audio arch on the N900...

qwerty12

Maybe they weren't even referring to sound servers at all. Check out the closed-source and undocumented (save for Doxygen comments in its headers) libplayback, and the closed-source policy plugins that go with it. They can limit what is played. (Think of some applications not outputting sound in Silent mode or not being allowed to press the play button on the media player whilst in a call.)

you're probably right.
it seems that the default media player is very greedy when it comes to audio output (i never noticed that before, as i don't use it). no other audio sources get through as long as it is playing.
mediabox and mplayer f.ex. can both send audio at the same time no problem, but the media player seems to take precedence over everything...

damn proprietary implementations :P

Maybe not...

However, an independently developed media player front end could possibly be launched with bare bones controls (advance song. etc) from within Sygic's menu's I would think.

The interruptions are not too bothersome for me though.

The songs on my N900 are basically the sound track of my life. I use the British dude as my Sygic voice. So when when this dude interrupts Tull's "Locomotive Breath" or Santana's "Europa" with Please turn slightly to the left, it kind of gives the car an Isle of Man concert feel. :D

I do think launching things like media player controls, a specific web page or Internet radio station from within Sygics main menu or a user defined sub-menu page, would be useful and could be community developed.

As far as rotation is concerned, Easily moving the status bar to the top of the page in portrait view may also be problematic. Perhaps they should take a cue from MicroB's browser rotation and develop a different style sheet or configuration for portrait mode.
That is, leave the status bar on top in landscape to comply with Maemo, but go to full page view in portrait just as the browser does.
This doesn't eliminate the "minimize to dashboard" problem but it could be done as it is in MicroB by simply returning to landscape mode, if auto-rotate is implemented .

In the mean time, just like when I'm using the browser in portrait mode, I return to the dash board by using the "Proximity sensor" configured through the Shortcutd app.

yes, in the second mail zehjotkah quoted (for a short period of time, now edited away *g*) sygic said that they currently _don't_ use pulseaudio.

both mediabox and mplayer directly send their output to pulseaudio, whereas the media player and sygic use the proprietary libplayback library, which uses ALSA.

When the device is rotated, the status bar moves accordingly to the top.
Exactly as the phone application does.

Cool. Now if they could move the zoom buttons down a tad that would be nice. :)

Oh and please don't forget to mention to them how the app closes incorrectly from the "X". This is easy to do when trying to maximize it from the dashboard. The annoyance is that closing it this way doesn't save settings changes and the most critical of those would be recent history and memorized locations.

You could spend a day marking spots to add to a POI later on but then loose all this info with a misplaced touch... major suckage.

Otherwise I'm liking the heck out of this app in portrait mode.

Back to the topic: Is there a way to change the speeds that trigger auto zoom? When I cruise at 60 MPH. POI's do not show up until I am right on top of them. If I drop my speed below 50, they show up (in 3D view) a good 900 yds further ahead giving plenty of time to react if I want exit for gas or a meal. But cruising at 50 MPH is not looked upon nicely by my fellow drivers on the road at the time. :D
I would like that sub 50 MPH zoom level to be the maximum rather than having it zoom out above 50...

for the USA maps, there is a subfolder for each state in /maps/statexx/ while the poi's are USA-yyy. I understand your logic of putting the poi files in the country but there is no USA country folder as such ....

Yup, I'm confused by this too. Though the actual file path is /maps/uXX where XX is the state initials. Anyone have an idea?

On mine with USA maps installed, the folder in the "maps" directory is "upa". Regard, I'm thinking this might be different depending on your home location.

The best way to find the correct folder is to first create a new POI category from within the app and save it. You can call it whatever you want. After you save it you will find a *.upi file with that name in one of the map folders. The folder that you find it in is the folder you want to place your other POI files into as well. :)

The coresponding Icon files go in "res" under "icons"

EDIT: I have attached a zip file with a Red Light & Speed Cam POI that I produced so we can all play along at home. :)

you have to open the File Manager. Not the Application Manager.
After copying the files with the Sygic program to the internal memory of your N900, take the usb-cable off, open file manager and select the mobile-maps-setup.deb file, or whatever it is called...

Thanks, though I find this setup rather...well ******ed. So if I want speed cameras in MD, DC, and VA I have to copy it three times into UMD,UDC, and UVA. I may have mis-understood the file layout. Are the maps not broken down by each state (hence why we have a folder for each state?). I'm not currently using your speed camera file, just using some random one I found online though it contains speed cameras across several states. My comment was regarding how we would show the same POI across several states.

And that is all it needs to do. This I believe is the limit of whatever pre-fetch it uses. It loads just what it needs to give you a quick response when navigating to a "POI near me"

... There are many map folders for the US, Sygic breaks the country down and ID's POI's by region apparently. The region I am in is the Philadelphia Metro Region. For faster searches it must load just the POI's for the region you are currently located. I have seen what you describe when I search for a POI outside my region. However, the POI's are still there.

When I go to "browse map", zoom out, and move the cursor to any part of the country: If I tap the menu button and select "Find nearby POI" It does return all nearby POI's. A search for "Borders" in Oklahoma City took about 15 seconds, but it gave me the Borders on the Northwest expressway there.

...and Laughing Man I'm sorry if I appeared snippy. The "R" word does that to me sometimes. Having a younger sibling that has been called that most of his life, for most of my life I have volunteered my free time to his community of friends and others who provide support. Again, I apologize for being overly sensitive.

BTW the file I provided has 2455 locations included in it.

Another POI of interest in the USA...

...a list of all the places that were visited on the Food Network show called "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives." Each of these places looks great and should be worthy of a visit. Here is the link to the show http://www.foodnetwork.com

Combined with..

...a list of all 105 places that were visited on the Travel Channel's show called 101 Tastiest Places to Chowdown. #1 was Louis' Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut (the first restaurant to serve hamburgers).

Details: The five week, Season I of the show began on January 3, 2010 with Chowdown Countdown 101-81. New countdowns appear each Sunday, with Chowdown Countdown 20-1 aired on January 31, 2010. #1 was Louis' Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut (the first restaurant to serve hamburgers). #2 was Roscoe's House of Chicken' N Waffles in Los Angeles. #3 was Primanti Brothers in Pittsburgh. (Sandwiches contain coleslaw, tomato, and fresh-cut fries).

The address information in this POI was obtained from the Travel Guides listed at Chowdown Countdown Episodes Travel Guides http://www.travelchannel.com/TV_Shows

For a grand total of 406 of the greasiest, artery clogging, heart attack provoking, and most delicious points of interest in the USA. :)

Unzip the attached archive, install the files as descriped in the included "Read Me", and enjoy.

I'm sorry too. I tend not to associate ******ed with its usage towards those with physical or mental disabilities (I've worked with quite a few children with mental illnesses when I was an undergrad in Psychology). So I forgot that term could be interpreted in a different way. I meant the usage of a word as in it seems redundant and pointless if I had to put the UPI file in every state and district (say VA, DC, and MD).

So are you saying that if I place the speed camera UPI file in say UMD (for Maryland) if I'm in Virginia I can still get the speed cameras in VA without having to place the speed camera UPI file in UVA (for Virginia)?

As for POI, I've been trying to use the POI converter (http://www.sygic.com/index.php/en/download-tools/120-poiconvertor.html) though I haven't gotten it to work with the files from POI Factory, though that may be because.

a) I'm running Sygic's POI converter program (Windows only) through Wine in Ubuntu. If this is the case I have to use the software in Windows (I'm trying this tonight)

b) The CVS files provided by POI Factory aren't in the right order. I'll have to compare it with the way yours is laid out to see if I need to re-order the contents of the file.

BTW POI Factory is a great community with lots of useful POI files, for example there's one just for Starbucks in the USA if people are Starbucks addicted, likewise there's a great one for speed cameras and red light cameras (the later two require you to be an active member, e.g. 3 weeks of at least one post a week).

Edit: It seems the problem with the POI converter program is it needs the files to be in Sygic's example format. So basically tabs instead of comma deliminations.

Yup, Sygic is real particular that way. If there are characters it doesn't like like in the descriptor, ; ( ) (like those< to name a few), the program crashes as soon as you attempt to search the category. If you don't do a search, things will work fine until one of those poi"s comes into range. Then crash.

I found it best to download Poi's found on the net in OV2 (TomTom) format. then I use a simple freeware converter to change them to UPI format. However this UPI format still can not be read by our Sygic correctly. The fix is simple though.

Use the Sygic POI converter that you pointed to and first change this older UPI format file to a Unicode text file, then use the Sygic POI converter to convert this new text file into a UPI POI and our Sygic will now load and use them just dandy...

I know it sounds re... er, mentally challenged :p but this two step process cleans up the descriptors and what not.

BTW, thanks for the heads-up PM dude. Send or post up that cam file if it is the one that has 3400 cams in it and I'll clean it up for you to post. That seems to be the most up to date.

All others please hang in there I will have a post up shortly (2 to 3 days) with pictures, circles, arrows, and everything included hosted downloads of the tools I found useful...

As tempting as it may seem at the time, like when cooking good rice, do not lift the lid until it's done. That is, do not open the text file with a Windows text editor before you reconvert it to a useful UPI POI. As this will add some of those characters that our Sygic is particular about. :)

Also, when making that final pass, Sygic POI converter will ask for an icon. Whatever you name this icon then, must remain the name of it when you place it in the "Res/icons" directory or it won't show up. Even if you later change the name of the POI itself, leave the name of this icon the same because its description and location are now coded into the UPI file. You can however, always choose one of the pre-configured icons once you load the POI file on to the device.

Another thing I found... If the name of your POI has a dash in it like "Before-After", the dash and all the characters following the dash will not show up in the POI field on the device. The POI will still work but the name of it reported by the device will simply read "Before"

...and another thing :p

Regardless of what the Sygic POI converter says. Our Sygic will only read icons rendered in 8 bit. I found that 45 x 45 is the best size for them as the 27 x 27 the help file states will show up at only about 60% of the size of other POI icons.

I ran into the same problem. I fixed it by editing the application.skin file. Find the textline with laneHighColor in it. By default it uses the value "_c.sygicGreen" which is defined in the top part of this skin file. I tried updating the value of the sygicGreen declaration, but this had no impact at all (I do not know why though).

So I simply changed the value of laneHighColors to "_c.bgrMainCapion" which is kind of light blue. This seems to work for me. You could choose to change the value to "_c.sygicRed" to show red arrows.

Edited to give more detailled information ;)
Step by Step:

start xterm
sudo gainroot
cd /home/user/Mydocs/Res/skin
vi application.skin
type '/laneHighColor' (without the quotes, with the slash)
user the cursor to go to the color part within the double quotes
use the x to delete unwanted characters
type i
now insert mode is on, you can type the requested text. I used _c.bgrMainCaption. You could choose to use _c.sysgicRed
press esc on the screen
type ZZ
start sygic
happy driving :D

Hope this helps.

Why?! When you drive you don't play to the phone!
I don't get you guys! This is a problem?
What about me!? I even don't have maps for my country(Romania)! Don't you think that this should look a real problem?

disable Fullscreen-mode:
open X-Terminal and type in the following:
root
vi /usr/share/applications/hildon/sygic.desktop

move cursor with arrow buttons.
click button "a" for editing mode.
change
Exec=/opt/sygic/Drive/Maemo/drive -cwd=/home/user/MyDocs/Drive/Maemo -rfull

I don't think anyone here can solve the problem you are having with the Romania's map. You should contact Sygic. From what I understand they only provide the main roads for Romania.

Yes I know. The strange thing is thst in Sygic 7.60 the maps for Romania are at 99% coverage but those maps are not working with 7.71 and for Maemo is not available the 7.60 version of application. GREAT! Now what is the solution?

Yup, I figured that out today on the road. I upgraded early this AM (GMT -4:00) before leaving the house.

Couple of things I noticed after removing full screen:

Sygic doesn't seem to recognize what orientation you are in when the app is started. That is; if you are in portrait mode and start the app it will start in landscape mode. I have to unmount the sucker and do the shake.

When it does go to portrait mode the status bar moves to the top where you can now get to the dashboard easily.

But, status bar apps (volume, MFE, Availability, Clock & Alarms, yadda, yadda, yadda) are not available.
(This last bit is understandable until Maemo makes some changes. :) )

Now here is where it gets interesting with -rfull removed ... If, rather than invoking portrait by doing the shake you instead chose the menu option to rotate the display, the status bar with access to the status bar apps is on the side of the display like it was before the update...

I'm glad these guys are making the effort. I'm havin' a blast with this thing. :)

BTW zehjotkah, thanks for all you are doing dude.

If you can, see if you can find out where the blue "arrow" icon is stored. I would love to make my own to represent the back of my car or suttin'.

Hey YoDude, how's the integration of the cameras? :)

I'm checking that mail box now. I didn't see anything after our last posts..

EDIT: Nothing dude. I can't integrate what I don't have. :)

I even checked SPAM... I got invited to Mainland China

The 8thChina (Guangzhou) International

Environmental Protection Exhibitation

Invite Letter

...but no CVS or OV2 files.

EDIT: EDIT: (I got your second e-mail) I received 3882 Poi's in CSV last night and was able to combine them, clean-up the extra descriptor field, and remove duplicates for a total of 3644 in one file.

However, as I suspected some have "E-07" appended to their longitude. This may have been left by a text editor somewhere along the line and can not easily be cleaned up. In fact, it crashes the program I have for doing this.

If I have time when I get home this evening I'll try something else but in the mean time if you can get me a copy in unedited (and not reconverted) OV2 format from your original source it may save some time.
The descriptors would still have to be cleaned up but the position information would be virgin, dig?

YoDude

So last night while I was waiting for a POI data base Laughing Man sent me to recompile (and crash, yet again  ) I found a way to change the slash screen.

It involves creating a new folder in the Sygic "Res" directory found in MyDocs on the N900 N900:\home\user\MyDocs\Res\skin\others

http://files.myopera.com/yodude/blog/custom.jpg

Open "Res" with the N900's file manager then open the "skin" folder, then open the "others" folder found there. You should see just one folder called mobilemaps. While you are in the "others" directory create a new folder and call it "custom" (or whatever you dang well please).

Now the next part will require an image editor and I used Paint Shop Pro. The next set of instructions are for using a Windows PC (Linux users, being much brighter then us common folk :p, I'm sure can transpose them to ones that work for them.)

Connect the N900 to the desktop in "Mass Storage Mode". from your PC cruise into the N900:\home\user\MyDocs\Res\skin\others directory where we were on the N900 before. Open the mobilemaps folder and select a file called 1_1.dat. Copy that file (do not move it)to the "custom" folder you created earlier.

Now open that copied file with Paint Shop Pro. You should see something like this:

http://files.myopera.com/yodude/blog/1_1.jpg

Change that image's dimensions from 130 x 29 to 800 x 480. Do not change anything else.
It will look like hell but that's not the point.

Next open an 800 x 480 image in your editor that you would like to use as your splash screen, copy that image and paste it as a "new selection into the resized 1_1.dat image. Save your new 1_1.dat image to where it came from N900:\home\user\MyDocs\Res\skin\others\custom.
Close up shop. You're done.

Now cruise over to the settings.ini file found at N900:\home\user\MyDocs\Drive\Maemo

http://files.myopera.com/yodude/blog/settings.jpg

Open that file in Notes on the N900 or WordPad or other text editor on your PC.

Edit the line splash=mobilemaps found there to splash=custom (or whatever you called the dang thing), start up Sygic and enjoy. :headbang:

http://files.myopera.com/yodude/blog/edit.jpg

This is Q & D and I'm thinkin' with a little tweakin', animated Splash screens will also run. :)

***

For those playing along at home who want to see it in action simply unpack the attached Splash Screen.zip file and put the two folders found there in the N900:\home\user\MyDocs\Res\skin\others directory.

If you change the line in settings.ini to splash=custom
...you will get the following as your new splash screen:

http://files.myopera.com/yodude/blog/anna%20nilsson.png

A photograph by Anna Nilsson (http://photo.net/photodb/user?user_id=1256473), an artist I found that shares some of the same attractions with me.

If you change the line in settings.ini to splash=yodude
...you will get this as your new splash screen:

http://files.myopera.com/yodude/blog/ydps.png

... and you may see why I think crude animations would work.

Have fun.

... But hey, don't go a hurtin' yourself none. :)

has any one had any success while tinkering with the Sygic Colour 1.6.2.2 as posted by Dread123?

http://w13.easy-share.com/1701313535.html

I tried showing it the N900/maps directory.. I tried making new folders and naming them to accomodate the Sygic Colour tweaker.. doesn't seem to want to read the .pak files as .bmps or otherwise.

If some one has had some success changing the colours and icons is there any chance of a couple of screen shots and possibly a dumbed down step by step instructions being posted?

Wishlist
High contrast UI design as option (how to read white on light blue in a sunny environment? I do not need fancy designs, I need legible ones!)
UI design without outlined text (outlines make text less easily legible -- up to unlegible when the eyes are not the best anymore)
Screen autorotation
Edit: Adjustable speeds used for calculating the time to destination (I simply do not want to drive as speedy as the navigator means I should do to finish my trip in the Sygic's time)
Sygic not stopping to navigate while pushed to background
Quick access to other programs while in full screen mode (I do not want to move the N900 from the holder first to get the phone or any other application)
Faster first GPS fix when no Internet access available (the external GPS mouse used on my previous phone was much faster with the first fix)

PS SygicColors can help a little bit regarding high contrast UI design, but it does not allow to eliminate the outlines. Unfortunately, many of the options specified in application.skin are not read by Sygic, it seems they are only applied when integrated into the corresponding .dat file.

You need to download the whole Res folder from your N900 and point SygicColors to that folder on your file system. (Have a backup copy of the folder before making any changes.)

I did not try to change icons, just colors and fonts. I was even able to add new fonts (just move ttf files into the fonts folder).

Changes occur mainly in the skin folder, only changed files must be copied back to the N900.

For editing: You simply have to try and test. The names of the colors etc. give a hint, what they are for. The tab "Application" is used while there has not been a GPS fix yet and for menu browsing, tab "Navigation" is used during turn-by-turn navigation etc., tab "Browse" probably when you browse the map (have not tested this).

Changing colors: Mark the name of the color and click (or double click?) on the white field between color and font names.

Changing fonts: Mark the name of the font and click on the button [...], mark the new font and click the [Change ...] button (cannot remember what exactly it is called).

By the way: There is no indication of the source of the software. The website mentioned inside SygicColors is off. You must put a lot of trust on this, that it does not do any harm. I had it running in a Virtual Machine only, that was reset after use.

Hi cardiff-blues,

These are the files you should backup:

Settings:
Drive > Maemo > settings.dat

Favorites:
maps > Country name or State name > favourites.upi

Radars (if you have any):
maps > Country name or State name > radars.upi

License number, so you don't need to bother with it in next install:
maps > license.txt

Search history (only if you think that's necessary):
Res > nameshistory.syg

If you have any itinerary saved, it will be saved in this directory:
Res > itinerary

make sure you create a fresh backkup before you flash.

flash the pr1.2 file first WITHOUT the "-R" at the end of the code (prevents it from rebooting)

then flash the vanilla file to it.

the whole process takes less then five minutes.

then restore from the fresh back-up you made.

the back up will have all your settings, etc in it.

When you downloaded the files from Sygic site you have the deb file used to install Sygic and more three folders: drive, maps, Res.
Mount N900 usb on yous pc, copy the deb file plus the three folders to N900 MyDocs dirctory, unmount it and install the deb. Do the licensing process and you should be ready to use Sygic.

reading back a few lines, I see that you reflashed. Did you get the eMMC flashed as well? Looked like you were having problems.

Here's what I did.

I backed everything up.

Flashed the OS Image and the eMMC. Installed all appz from scratch. In the sygic repository was the Mobile maps. I installed from there. Moved the 3 directories back to MyDocs and it ran first try. You might want to uninstall and reinstall.

Here in the UK, when I enter a postcode, it doesnt let me enter the last 2 digits, I have to enter streetname and number instead.

Is there a way I can just enter a whole postcode like (for example) on a TomTom?

I usually dont bother with street names, just postcode and buliding name, so this irritates me quite a lot.
