I don't have any English links for this yet, but there are rumours that Samsung will be showing a new monitor at Cebit next month, with some sort of internal controller that allows it to be used as an external display through a USB port. It is said that it can run at full resolution this way, even for full-screen video (no games, of course).

Obviously this will require a system driver, and obviously that driver will be Windows as usual. But if the specs are available to make a Linux version...

There are already USB 2.0 to SVGA devices, such as at USBGEAR (http://www.usbgear.com/computer_cable_details.cfm?sku=USBG-SVGA2&cats=169&catid=125%2C106%2C169). So far as I know they are USB2 only and Windows only.

Yes, but those are basically USB/PCI adaptors with a very limited graphics chip on them. This will require software rendering, so it's going to be very slow for anything but web, e-mail, text and such. I imagine the data is probably compressed, too, though I can't say for certain. Either way, I'll stick with PCIe and AGP.
