Ones who try, please upload a YouTube video then if you can.
(try to focus to the text correctly or it is useless)

lshal, lsusb, lsmod, df -h, mount, ifconfig - for those commands cut+paste of the outputs (or a well focused photo) would be interesting to see also.

Yes, sadly Nokia and Intel seem to be very lazy...
But sinc the code is out, you can contribute tons of time for it and make a better job than those 2 are doing right?

And as always looking forward for the next one with great hope... :D

Lets see what you will bring in one month..

Why Lazy?

MeeGo is just a 'base' system that will be something that many platform will share in the near future.
The MeeGo that'll run on the N900 is based on this MeeGo that has been released today (fully open) with some additional closed source components and drivers that can't be released into the open due to licensing (as shame as that is).

They kept their word on what was about to be released.
If I read it correctly, the first MeeGo User Experience will be shown sometime in May.

Anyway.. this is the first day, the very first day and we're going to see how a fully blown system is going to be build almost from the very scratch.

Image this as a basic Ubuntu with no UI.. then on top of this we're going to get Xubuntu, Kubuntu and so on (i.e. the Ubuntu User Experiences).

This is what we've got today.
The MeeGo foundation. The first blocks.

So this is what we got today. Very promising. After year or two we may have a decently working system with some kind of GUI and some applications, then it’s nice to start from the scratch again. :D
It’s not a phone it’s a R&D-device for developers.

Could not have said it better myself... The release was exactly what i was expecting. Will join in the fun once my QT and programming skills come up to scratch but for now i am watching the developments in Gitorious with enthusiasm, ready to get involved.

To the teams that were involved with this initial release, great work. I think it is very positive to see a release in such a short space of time and it's good to know that things are on track according to the schedule.

Some questions here, what is the kernel version?

As a non-developer, I assume that this release for N900 is already past the points that make it so difficult to port other operating systems like Android to N900? (drivers or whatever it is that developers struggle with)

As developers, what will you test in this release?

It has a fairly familiar Linux userspace as well, just like maemo and Moblin.

I am very impressed too.
Once I started making my own Linux distribution, but I dropped the idea after some basic work when I realized how much work it is.
It's amazing how quick the working MeeGo was created.

This is a great start.

For all the users who don't get it, we can literally watch the OS from the beginning to the end of development. Getting insights to how decisions are made etc. This is having control over your device at a whole new level. Previous maemo releases we had to wait for Nokia to release firmware packages, development for Meego is done completely in the open.

This is a lot bigger than simply having no Ovi store and no fancy UI available on day 1. If you want something that simply works and has 1000's of apps eye candy etc you will probably be waiting till end of the year. There is a May release that will have UX packages and another release in October.

Actually, it isn't. For a while, that was packaged for the n900, before being yanked.

It's not known whether that will be used for MeeGo, but if you want to experiment with the tech shown there, that is 'libdui', available on http://qt.gitorious.org/maemo-6-ui-framework

Orbit (another UI approach) seems to be taking a slightly better approach though, so it's not really set in stone.

Make sure you're getting the correct image from that site. Pretty sure the eMMC one isn't the right one.

Interesting picture, still not as informative as I hoped. Any news about the PIM architecture? Any way to implement searching PIM content including local email, calendar, contacts, SMS, MMS, IM, etc... What is the backend for PIM data, some database with proper indexing of content?

Is it possible to install MeeGo onto a "Desktop" type of PC?

E.g. Install Intel-based MeeGo onto a "standard" laptop (e.g. 1.8ghz AMD Athlon, 512mb of RAM, ATI Xpress video card).

This would be very cool. To a certain extent you could do away with a gnome or kde environment and install MeeGo instead.

You home PC & portable device could run exactly the same OS!

I like that idea.

I'm not sure, but from what I understand that's one of the mayor innovative 'features' of MeeGo :) Platform independancy, being able to easily run the same applications on your desktop and your phone... Or am I wrong here?

So what are ppl doing who have installed it? Are they making apps? I have seen the terminal shots, is the gui installable afterwards? Usb charging working? Any text based browsing :) (wifi drivers/hardware working?)

This space is moving really fast. Development is going to have to be faster than that or Meego is going to get left in the dust. Look how many iPhones apple has sold and Nokia has yet to release an update to Maemo 5, let alone ship Maemo 6.

I'm sure all the corporations involved have taken this into consideration. Their strategy I cannot be sure of, but I agree that moving quickly is probably in their best interest. As for myself I am simply a user, I use an N900 daily as my main comms device, have a Symbian 5800 as a backup and keep most of my media and games on an iPod touch 2G. I still find myself most excited by the N900 and meego.
