Hi.. I dont know much about Linux and i need some help here with Quake 2.
I have Quake II on my PC (windows XP) and I have installed the ported version on my N900. How do I go about copying the PAK files from my PC to the N900. Please give me step by step instructions for the same, including accessing the baseq2 folder on my phone as well as copying syntax. Thank you very much. :o

1. Connect your N900 to your PC in mass storage mode
2. Locate the Quake 2 datafolder in your PC (sorry, I'm writing this from my N900, so you must find it yourself)
3. Copy the pak0.pak file tou yor N900 (just copy them to the first folder that opens when you click N900 in your My Compurer)
4. Move the pak0.pak file to user/.quake2/baseq2 by typing
mv /home/user/MyDocs/pak0.pak /home/user/quake2/baseq2/pak0.pak
to X Terminal
5. Disconnect yor N900 from PC and now you should be able to play Quake 2!

Hope this helps!
(sorry for the wrong folder I gave first, it was the folder I copyed my pak0.pak-file temporary before moving it to right place(and thanks to CepiPerez whose post made me understand that))

If you have installed quake2 from extras-devel you sould copy pak0.pak into /home/user/.quake2/baseq2 folder.
If you're running windows copy file to MyDocs folder (root folder). Then open x terminal and type:
mv /home/user/MyDocs/pak0.pak /home/user/quake2/baseq2/pak0.pak

i tried following the steps u specified, but its not working. I know i m doing something fundamentally stupid.

I copied the pak0.pak file to the N900 drive (.i.e., the mass storage) and then typed the command in X Terminal and it didnt work. Please find the screenshots below:

you might need to disconnect the usb to access MyDocs from the phone.

you might need to disconnect the usb to access MyDocs from the phone.

This. MyDocs directory goes away when attached to a USB for file-sharing purposes.

i knew i did something fundamentally stupid. quake is working now. i had to do the following:
1. enable root access
2. disconnect the usb cable
3. move the pak file to ".quake2" and not "quake2" (thank u CepiPerez).

linux rocks dude.. and hey another question: how do i access the game console while i m playing it, u know to get godmode and so on..
thanx for all ur help guys.

I copied the pak0 file but it still doesn't run, it seems to load and then just checks me back to my phone, do I need the pak1 files in there too? sorry if this is a dumb question ;)

Nope. Just uninstall the app entirely, install it again, before running it put the pak0 in baseq2 and THEN run it. Apparently the app freaks out if you run it without the file and won't run no matter what untill reinstalled.

sorry I deleted my post as I got it working, woops. ye for some reason it only moved a part of the file and then wouldn;t let me overwright, it was just doing nothing, I rm'd and then moved again and it worked ;)

My knew question is probably even dumber than the first but has anyone actually been able to play this game, as in control wise? any good ideas, it's one of those games that defo needs a mouse so how does one look around, move and shoot all at the same time?

Again, thanks.

I love these kinda games (I had to go digging to find my original Q2 CDs) but the control interface on the N900 (or any similar device) is just awful.

I'm no 1337 gamer, but without dual mouse&keyboard control it plain sucks. Totally wrong platform for such games.

I think I'll reinstall it on my F12 box, get some beer and relive the good ol'days ;)

hehehe ye Iv'e been doing the same recently, I installed simcity200 and jammed that for days! ;) same with loads of snes, nes and megadrive games, am currently half way through zero tolerence on the megadrive. some old school game work well on the n900, the older the game the better it seems to work, sonic is a good example, it only needs the arrows and a jump key.

quake 2 however seems to be a bit more "complex" I have banged on and on about how come there's no touch controls like on the iphone even if it's just for looking about but it seems far too many people port the game and then call it quites :( still waiting for some speedups and a software keyboard for dosbox...

The physical constraints of the N900 are the challenge here. It simply cannot support the kind of parallel controls you commonly use on a PC - QuakeX/UT etc typically have up to 4 simultaneous inputs (mouse motion + button click, and 2 keys)

Another point of concern is: how punishing are these kinda games on the keyboard/screen?

good question I better move all my gameplay around the jeyboard so as not to ware the keys out... surely they should last a long time, i personally have never had a key on a phone "break" the joystick on my k800 was rubbish yes but it never really "broke" as such.

Also wats the standard manufactures warranty on a phone? surely EU rules state that when it breaks Nokia owe me a knew phone?

If you've played the duke nukem 3d n900 port you'd see that its quite feasible to play these games on the n900 if the screen/mouse calibration is done correctly... wish i had more coding experience, i would definately give it a go. Maybe i'll try.

Yes, I've played it and I thought it was awful. 5 mins later I uninstalled it in disgust.

As I said before, the N900 is physically the wrong platform for such games. I don't expect to be proven wrong...but by all means try, I would dearly love to be wrong :)

Just because it is technically possible to port software so it can run on the N900, doesn't necessarily mean that it is any good when run on this platform.

To me, I think FPS gaming is possible on the N900. Below is an example config for the N95, that, in my opinion.. would work wonders on the N900: Accelerometer to look, arrow keys (or even touch screen) to strafe and walk.

I think someone just needs to try a similar config with OA, Q2, Q3 etc to see it works fine.

For you who are having problems with moving the datafile to the right location, could you tell what error message are you getting? Without telling it nobody can help you. And remember to check that your pak0.pak -file is where I adviced to place it because if it's in any other place the command for moving it won't work.

do it as root?

No, don't do it as root. Please stop trying to solve X Term related problems with running everything as root. Running things as root may seriously messu up your phone beacuse running things as root makes some files to belong to root user and after that they can't be used as normal user anymore.

How are some of you guys playing the game with what controls? If its keyboard tell me you easy setup for buttons?

You can set your own controls and check the default controls inside the game in Options>customize controls.

Well, I fixed the problem. I redownloaded quake 2 off of steam (previously i had used the q2 version i have working on my n95) and copied the pak0,pak1,pak2 files in to the correct directory and the game worked now.

jessi3k3; complete steps to do?
Thanks.
Download Quake 2 (I got mine off of steam)

Go to your quake2 install directory on your pc, inside the baseq2 folder.

Make a baseq2 folder on your n900 plugged into the pc and copy pak0.pak, pak1.pak, pak2.pak to your n900 in mass storage mode.

Unplug your n900 from your pc and then open xterm. Type the following:
mv MyDocs/baseq2/pak0.pak .quake2/baseq2/
mv MyDocs/baseq2/pak1.pak .quake2/baseq2/
mv MyDocs/baseq2/pak2.pak .quake2/baseq2/

why is it that quake2 gets installed in the /opt folder instead of the /home/user folder on my N900? Is it because i installed it using the app manager?

Rushmore

Why is it so cumbersome installing apps like Quake 2 on Maemo? Android has Quake 2 and other games and all you do is install and either play the demo version, or copy a full pak version to the base folder on the microsd. No manual entries and plays at smooth fps with sound on the Incredible.

Nice port, but the control scheme sucks big time... Otherwise it's ok, but 1st: mouse remembers your last position and interprets it as a movement when you touch a different location - so no mouse look.
2nd: Not enough buttons. This really needs to utilize those volume buttons for shooting and jumping (like on duke3d port - marvellous control w/ accelerometer, touchscreen and all the keys but camera and power). If you people get this done it's fully playable and enjoyable :)

I was discussing this with Figa some days ago about gba, on opengles you still have to upload to the framebuffer, instead of writting directly to it.
