So I just noticed that thru the browser facebook goes straight to mobile version now and ever since I owned the N900 it was the regular version, is there anyway to get out of the mobile mode?

2010-05-22, 04:16
I don't have the N900 anymore but on my nexus one there is usually an option at the bottom of the page for touch, mobile, and the regular site

Gazzlam
2010-05-22, 04:18
I noticed that today too!! Annoying!!!!

Particularly since there is no "full site" button on that screen, you have to do "touch site" then "full site" grrr!

I know there is something in the repositories that prevents MicroB from admitting you are on a phone, and subsequently sites think you are on a PC... but I don't want that. I want a cookie or something to remember I want full site view

Yeah I went to touch site then full site and saved that as my desktop bookmark, seemed to have fixed it. I guess fb finally started to recognize the N900.

2010-05-22, 04:28
Yea mine does this now to.. Facebook must be able to detect mobile devices now and refer it to the "appropriate" version of the site.

Gazzlam
2010-05-22, 04:38
I've just looked at the "full site" link, and it's a bloody javascript command, not a hyperlink... crap... maybe someone smarter than me can figure this out.

It annoys me that if you go to m.facebook.com, you get the mobile version...
If you go to touch.facebook.com, you get a slightly better mobile version...
Nothing that sends you to the full site though (although 0.facebook.com is a new thing that works for some carriers - just not mine)

Simplist solution is bookmark: www.facebook.com/?m2w

this will take you to the full site straight away

Change your bookmark to:
http://facebook.com/home.php

if you don't put the actual home.php bit in, it reverts to m.facebook.com. Worked 3 times in a row now

this might seem like a stupid question but...
what internet connection are you using to access facebook on microb? Are you using your carriers WAP connection or a WI-FI connection?

Memph1s
2010-05-22, 05:50
ok tried this and it is still only accessing the mobile site! fml!

Gazzlam
2010-05-22, 06:09
@ nataneous - I'm on wi-fi at the moment. Either way just reads the browser and device type and reports it back to facebook. But the above method seems to force it to the full site anyway.

I'm so tired of Facebook making completely pointless alterations to this site. The interface is clunky and the interface chat is horrendous(and I'm just referring to the full desktop version). Not to mention all the problems with unnecessary invasion of privacy(just google Openbook fo get a real idea). Now they're reverting a FRIGGIN INTERNET TABLET to a MOBILE text-only site(not even the touch or good mobile site)?!? This device is more than capable of handling their crappy interface, why the heck would they ever find it necessary to take away the full version from us? Looks like I'll be sticking to the Facebrick app and Jabber from now on. The widget that came preloaded with the damn n900 is pointless now.

Nothing that sends you to the full site though You can get to that site from mobile -> touch -> full.

At is at the bottom of the page, below the settings link IIRC.

Absolute PITA. To add to the pain there is a link to download a bookmark for facebook for the N900. This takes you to getjar ->
sorry your phone is not support..

WTF!

Anyway, will change my bookmarks to see if this helps - brings up a little "bug" though - why can't we edit bookmarks??

Plus, if I go from mobile -> touch -> full and then click on a person's name to see their profile, it throws me back to the mobile site. I think fb is broken (again).

Noticed that when I tried to select friends list too.
Sure they will fix it soon, but hopefully is happening to more than just N900 users so we are not left out!

Change the URL might not fix the problem, as facebook can still track you down by user agent, and even the http://www.facebook.com/home.php will recognize you eventually.

The solution to the problem(once and for all) is to change the user agent of your MicroB.

Procedure to change user agent:
1) In the address bar of MicroB, type about:config
2) you'll be prompted a warning of warrant void something, do not proceed if you're afraid
3) in the filter, type user
4) you can find "general.useragent.vendor" at the bottom, select it and press enter
5) change the user agent in the dialog box to something else like "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US)" (without quotes)

Now browse ANY site without having to worry about switching to mobile page.

Hope this help.

The solution to the problem(once and for all) is to change the user agent of your microb. Do not try the package hideuseragent, it doesn't work in this case.

that worked. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad that it works for you so it does for me.

However, some call me that it doesn't work for him. I know what happen. It seems that the browser reload the /home/user/.mozilla/microb/prefs.js.

A quick fix would be running this BEFORE change the about:config, or /home/user/.mozilla/microb/prefs.js:

(as root)invoke-rc.d tablet-browser-daemon stop

STILL it doesn't work for some people neither! The invoke-rc.d tablet-browser-daemon stop actually killall browser; kill browserd. To my dismay invoke-rc.d tablet-browser-daemon stop doesn't really kill browser and browserd at all!

It might be due to some apps he has been installed which keeps the browser daemon running, and which apps would cause the browser running forever in the background is out of my knowledge really.

Therefore, if you couldn't change your useragent because of this, you can still browser http://www.facebook.com/home.php

For the time being let me explore how to force MicroB to reload the change. I'll update you as soon as I find it.

http://www.facebook.com/?m2w
it directs you directly to the main site. Work for me without any problems at all.

9000
2010-05-22, 09:23
I know http://www.facebook.com/?m2w and http://www.facebook.com/home.php works, but only at Facebook Inc.'s mercy. They could still make these two pages recognize useragent and throw you to the mobile page, if they see fit.

So the solution would be changing the useragent permanently. It seems that not everything could change the agent successfully by change about:config or /home/user/.mozilla/microb/prefs.js

While I'm still reseraching on it, anyone would give a hints on changing the useragent permanently would greatly welcome.

why do you think hideuseragent wouldn't work? I used it 10 mins ago and it worked for me (unless facebook have changed the site). Needed to do it this way cos fb was arbitrarily reverting to mobile mid-session even after having been manually set to normal version.

EDIT - 12 feckin' pages? ... sheesh. We could have stopped here. Just set the user agent like I said, forget the next "X" pages of this thread, and go do something something more intresting that's actually worth posting on your status, guys!

Because it sometime causes MicroB to download home.php instead of browsing it. I won't re-install it again so I can't reproduce the problem for you. If anyone is interested, you can install it and try it out.

OK! I got it fixed! This time by using hideuseragent. I'm sorry to the maintainer of the hideuseragent that I said before it doesn't work for facebook. Yes, default hideuseragent doesn't work for http://m.facebook.com, it's the FAULT of facebook, because it tends to throw everything it won't recognize to mobile version. (See the first screenshot)

Here is the procedures to change User Agent of MicroB:

1) (As root) apt-get install hideuseragent
2) Go to Setting, find Hide User Agent
3) Click User Agent
4) Enter(better copy&paste): Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux armv6l; en-US; rv:1.9a6pre) Gecko/20070810 Firefox/3.0a1 Tablet browser 0.1.16 RX-34_2007SE_4.2007.38-2
5) Press Set (See second screenshot)

Now you can browse the http://www.facebook.com full version.

In response to mukks, you may change the user agent to the following if you want it to redirect you to Facebook Touch:

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.1; en-us; dream) AppleWebKit/525.10+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0.4 Mobile Safari/523.12.2

Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.4; U; Series60/5.0 Nokia5800d-1/21.0.025; Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 ) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413

It's not Nokia's fault, we know that. It wasn't happening before, but now it is. And there was no firmware update in between the two instances. (Yeah, there was LPR1.2, but most of us sane people are still using the official PR1.1, or in rare cases, PR1.0)

This totally worked. No matter what Facebook page I navigate to, it still holds firm with the standard FB layout. Thank you!

P.S.--This shouldn't have been necessary. To route the N900 to a dumbed-down mobile format page is ludicrous; N900/MicroB can handle rich multimedia pages easily with power to spare.

Tried this method 3 times but it keeps reverting back.

This solution doesn't work with some people who happen to have background process that requires microB running, because it'll keep reload prefs.js that negate your change.

You may follow the second solution I post on #40 (http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=670294&postcount=40). So far everybody can get it work with this solution.

I just submitted to Facebook a request that they stop redirecting to the mobile version of the site by default.

You can submit your own requests of similar nature at the following url:

I just did this, everyone else should too.

So far I got three accounts banned for complaining (with different reasons). I'm not kidding. They don't give a dime of our complains. They pay consultants to give them suggestions to improve and that's they only channel they really take action for.

You're welcome to raise your complain to suppport@facebook.com directly. Mind you, you expect to deal with most redneck ego-bursting rude people you've ever met in your entire life. (and if you value your prime account get a fake one to complain) ^^

You are right. I'm using Konqueror as my web browser on my desktop, and FB offers me the mobile version now.

If you ever read a tutorial on web programming, and it says "don't do decisions based on what the user's browser says it is", here's the reason why.

-.-

But that means they recognize the N8x0, but not the N900?

(Surely there's some other reason.)

There are only differences in the two User Agent strings is:

N8x0:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux armv6l; en-US; rv:1.9a6pre) Gecko/20080828 Firefox/3.0a1 Tablet browser 0.3.7 RX-34+RX44+RX48_DIABLO_5.2010.16.1

N900:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux armv7l; en-US; rv:1.9.2a1pre) Gecko/20091127 Firefox/3.5 Maemo Browser 1.5.6 RX-51 N900

1. Different version of the processor
2. I actually don't know this one. Hardware revision?
3. Gecko engine version
4. Firefox 3.0 vs. 3.5
5. Tablet browser vs. Maemo Browser
6. N800, N810, N810 WME, with Diablo vs. N900 with no stated OS.

Further testing shows that the part after Firefox/3.5, and before RX-51 N900 is causing the problem.

"Maemo Browser 1.5.6" redirects, but "Tablet browser 0.3.7" doesn't.

Removing "Maemo Browser 1.5.6" altogether, leaving Firefox/3.5 RX-51 N900, also does not redirect.

So it does seem to be a case of throw away what you don't know... :(

Thanks for the information.

Tell you what, you inspired me to test a hypothesis: change the word 'Maemo' to 'Tablet', i.e.

Change the original User Agent from:
Firefox/3.5 Maemo Browser 1.7.4.8 RX-51 N900

To:
Firefox/3.5 Tablet Browser 1.7.4.8 RX-51 N900

Then type 'facebook.com' in MicroB and press ENTER.

Yeah! Full version of facebook!

Change back to Maemo:

Mobile version.....OoOPs.

Through a little test we can confirm that Facebook recognizes the word 'Tablet' in the User Agent!

I think you just did the inverse. You showed that it recognizes the word Maemo and sends you to the mobile version.

The full site is the default so hence if IŽd write gobbeldigook, or other similar made up words, instead of Maemo or Tablet, IŽd also get the full site.

True it is, I removed the word 'Tablet' or 'Maemo' before the 'browser', facebook return full version as well.

However, it's even worse if facebook picked on the word 'Maemo'.

What has maemo community done that makes facebook discriminating the word 'maemo'? I wonder... :)

BTW, thank you for your reply. I just want to find a User Agent that can work with facebook and OVI store, but....

Now that we know the cause, and how to circumvent it, now the issue falls on how to get Facebook's attention, and how to get them to change it.

Once we get their attention, it shouldn't take much persuasion, if they have any common sense...

I'm assuming those "Petition for [insert new feature here]" groups don't work, right?

And help threads only accommodate up to 12 (I believe) responses.

And... to be honest, I don't think we have enough people to gain attention via the Suggestions box...

So, how? List your ideas.

No we don't, the N900 had no problems rendering the normal Facebook site and that just needs to be restored - I much prefer not having to rely on an app when the phone doesn't need it.

I've submitted a bug on FB so that hopefully they'll take notice if enough people kick up a fuss, it should be a reasonably simple fix.

so for now, whats the best way round this? do i need to install hide user agent? od do it in about:config? or what...

I think the easiest way right now is to use HideUserAgent, with this in your "custom" string:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux armv7l; en-US; rv:1.9.2a1pre) Gecko/20091127 Firefox/3.5 RX-51 N900

Leave the setting on "Customized," and when you need to use the Nokia site, just go back over to settings and click remove. (Make sure to dismiss the banner that comes up; that's when it actually refreshes.)

To get back to the modified string, just press set.

It'd be nice to have a widget, but I don't think this method is that much of a pain to do anyways.

EDIT: You can put whatever you want in between Mozilla/3.5, and RX-51, like "Tablet Browser," but just don't put the word "Maemo," or other mobile keyword in it, or it'll stick you to the Mobile page.

But that means they recognize the N8x0, but not the N900?

It's possible, as Facebook did once set up a special exception in their code for the Maemo Browser on Internet Tablets.

Back in 2008, Facebook redirected everything with a Nokia useragent from www.facebook.com to the Facebook WAP site. (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=25552) The Maemo Browser knew nothing of WAP then, just as now, so we went through the same "change your useragent", "complain to Facebook", and "the iPhone site still works" posts we're seeing in this thread.

Back then, complaining worked. It will be interesting to compare Facebook's responsiveness between "completely inaccessible to a small number of users" then and "inconvenient for a larger number of users" today.

Is anyone else having trouble saving the below as a bookmark?

http://facebook.com/home.php

Everytime I reboot it deletes the bookmark...

That's bug 6269, "Can't reuse the name of a bookmark that has been deleted" (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6269), which is fixed in PR1.2.

For now, name your new Facebook bookmark something more than just "Facebook".

Here is the procedures to change User Agent of MicroB:

1) (As root) apt-get install hideuseragent
2) Go to Setting, find Hide User Agent
3) Click User Agent
4) Enter: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US)
5) Press Set (See second screenshot)

Now you can browse the http://www.facebook.com full version.

this worked perfectly and it's a blessing, i hate the mobile facebook site and not having to look at stripped down mobile sites was half the reason i got this phone in the first place

So using the bookmark solution doesn't work that great, click on anyones pic, or goto someones page and click on the facebook link on the top left corner and you will notice that it just reloads the same page. Even with accessing the full site thru the touch/full version option eventually leads to issues, the only thing that works is the useragent solution. Ovi not working slight drawback, big drawback once the qt apps finally rock ovi with the new pr.

Funny that tear works great on my N810 with fb still, why is that?

Feeling really dumb in my huff and puff, and I misspelled version in the title of this thread. Final thoughts use the useragent fix, it is easy and works well, and bother fb to fix it, we all know there is zero logical reason for them to re-direct for the MicroB browser the way they are.

Best solution...

Or just name the new Facebook bookmark something a bit longer than just "Facebook" as previously mentioned in this thread.

ok, so i can change the browser name so it gives me the full site, but the in window chat dont work ??

on the left it usually shows whos online, now it just says 'go online' and when i click this it openes a new window and says cant connect.

any thoughts as to what to set for my browser id??

using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US) at the mo.

could someone who is a good working knowledge of creating web pages that do browser detection, give us a description or a pointer in the right direction of why changing the browser agent works and , how and why websites do this?
Thanks it's more just for me to learn and explain to others ;-) don't worry I have googled it and am ready up, but wanted to get a first hand account of all of this :-)

Thanks in advance

Santiago at #55 (http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=670461&postcount=55) has posted a user agent that makes chat work again:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux armv6l; en-US; rv:1.9a6pre) Gecko/20070810 Firefox/3.0a1 Tablet browser 0.1.16 RX-34_2007SE_4.2007.38-2

EDIT: In view of this, I've changed the recommended user agent in step 4 of #40 to Santiago's suggestion accordingly: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=670294&postcount=40

even without the hide user agent app i am not being rerouted anymore ... anybody else?

is this caused by the new firmware PR1.2? (i noticed after flashing, when my hide user agent was set back to default ... so i can't say for sure if facebook changed things before)
Or did Facebook change something?
Maybe somebody who has not flashed with the new firmware will try this?

No, Facebook fixed it on their end. I've not upgraded to PR1.2, and I'm no longer redirected either.
