I'm hoping to be able to make a USB 3g Access (WithGPS) device work on the N800.

Any techies here have input on the feasability?

Or the Franklin CDU-550

OS's supported
• Windows 2000
• Windows XP
• Mac OS X and Linux

CDU550 Linux Instructions

Either one I potentially see attached to the back of the N800 with a Velcro tab, and possibly a small power injector.
Would be nice if I could find the perfect case, Maybe will have to make my own.

It appears that most of the USB modems can be accessed as a serial port modem.

Hi guys, if I can get my hands on an OTG adapter I'd definitely like to test this on my N800 with a couple of the USB Sprint adapters we have laying around at work. I'll post back at some point when I get a chance.

EDIT:

Just thought I'd mention I have used Novatel Wireless cards from Sprint in Linux before, using the directions posted above as a guideline. Both the S720 and the EX720 with an adapter work great.

How about the att usb 881? It has a battery on board. It would be perfect if it could work with the 800 or 810.

Hi nurse_gal, I'm guessing you would need to get a self powered USB hub at the very minimum, as the USB cellular cards come with a cable that can draw power from up to 2 USB ports at once (and the N8x0 doesn't provide power out the USB port). You'd also need an adapter like this (http://www.electronicproductonline.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2004) and another like this (http://www.electronicproductonline.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1781). With those then the trick would be typing the command 'dmesg' before and after you plug in the USB card and seeing if its probably detected. Finally you would use wvdial or another PPP program to initiate the connection (hints provided at the links in the first couple posts).

See http://www.pharscape.org for some information about Linux & 3G. There are howtos and a forum about the subject. Beware, some information might be x86-specific (e.g. closed source binary modules).

I'm about to try a Huawei 3g USB modem (not the 220, not sure which model yet). clearly I'll need a powered hub, has anyone found a battery powered one? I don't want to have to find a powerpoint.

just get a battery powered 3g router such as the cradlepoint one from 3gstore.com. i have one and it works great with the sprint 597 usb aircard. wifi hotspot in your pocket.

which one would that be? All the ones I saw on that site needed an external mains or 12v power supply. If I had mains power available I could use anything!

So you put charged batteries in the varta and that sends power out all the ports in the dlink hub?

Do all hubs do that?

This varta charger has has special output mode.
I guess all active hub can do this. What you need is cable between charger and hub power.

Its cool, but what I find strange is how someone is able to like this mess of cables... not useful to carry around...?

It's still more compact than the "normal" option of a netbook with 3G/USB, or even internal 3G. Even if unwieldy on foot, it becomes much handier mounted to a vehicle, for example. It's a first iteration; I'm working towards a similar concept (my 2.75G modem just shipped), but drawing from my own OTG experiences and what others have posted online, I should be able to make a tidier package of it. The handful of people who've done this kind of stuff already could (and will) almost certainly produce similar results, when they stop to redo it.
