Could be country related? Im in Uruguay, and happen the same to me. As no flood of complains here,my best guess was that it was being restricted to countries where the N900 was officially launched or something like that.

To get one of the free packages from OVI the only thing to do is to set up the OVI repository and to download this script:

It seems to be up here (also in USA). And there are a couple of new items on it I haven't seen--though I haven't checked in a while. Earthcomer, Joikuspot wifi (I think that's new...wasn't it just expected for a long time?), and Angryman.

I have Angryman on my Chumby...it's amusing. Earthcomber looks to be revived from Palm world, but the price is right for checking it out.

I'm starting to wonder whether it's a greek thing or not. Mine was working fine until I installed the Greek UI package. Switched to Greek and then later back to English and now it doesn't work. If you have the app "HideUserAgent" installed, go to Setttings and under Connectivity click on Hide User Agent, then click Remove. after that you should be good to go.

HideUserAgent is an app that tricks websites into thinking that you're using a different browser or phone. That's why it affects the ovistore. If the ovistore thinks you're not using an n900 or other supported phone then it won't allow you to download any apps or say it's not available for your device.

Saturn
2010-06-26, 15:01
Yes, as dimkit mentions above, one way to have ovi store returning that your device is not supported is to change the language on your device.

Anyone with some spare time should try to report the issue to nokia.

When you switch back the device language to english it should definitely start working again. Is it maybe you've just changed the region?

No I thought about that too. Tried changing everything back to english (language and region) and it didn't help. I cleared my cache as well in the browser, but that didn't help either. Any other suggestions? I don't have hide user agent installed.

Ok, I got the same thing. I guess we wait and see

What's funny is that I can get to https://store.ovi.com and login successfully from my Safari browser on my mac... I tried using the Firefox for N900 browser and my login works ok. So is OVI store now hostile to the N900 microB browser and it's default user agent string? This change in behavious is recent; as of a few days ago, my logins to the OVI store using the microB browser were working fine.

Edit: has this been reported to Nokia -- they manage the OVI store, no? Check your user agent string by pointing your browser here (http://whatsmyuseragent.com/)

For info,

for me it works fine if I have English (UK) as device language.
Since I was on a travel I've tested it in Spain, France and Switzerland through both GPRS and WiFi in the last 24 hours.

Everywhere it broke only when I've switched to the Greek language (and unfortunately didn't think about testing using a third language).

Mine is "Maemo browser", is it the correct user agent? can you post your string if it is working?

The default user Agent string for microB should be,

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux armv7l; en-US; rv:1.9.2b6pre) Gecko/20100318 Firefox/3.5 Maemo Browser 1.7.4.8 RX-51 N900

But is not currently accepted by the OVI store, neither is your string "Maemo browser". The one used by the Mozilla browser for the N900 is, (transcribed by hand as this browser doesn't yet support mouse mode to copy text):

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux armv7l; en-US; rv:1.9.2.1) Gecko/20100330 Firefox/3.6.1 Fennec/1.0.1

and it works for me in accessing store.ovi.com. You can reset the default user agent string in microB with the "Hide User Agent" addon, as has been described elsewhere in the thread.

Edit: I programmed the above user agent string into microB and I am able to go to 'store.ovi.com' and do a successful login... so this may be used as a workaround for now.

In contrast, trying to go to 'store.ovi.mobi' gives me the usual "Device not supported". Trying to get to the store via the OVI icon in the apps menu gives me the usual error panel advisory that I need to update my Maemo 5 installation!

The easiest is using "Hide User Agent" available in the Maemo repositories.

But while I can access successfully the store, download links don't work... they use 'store.ovi.moby' addresses which when entered generate "Device not supported".

Sigh! Back to square one... :(

I fired off an email to Ovi on Saturday or Sunday. The guy that responded was quite helpful, said he is using his own N900 and it's working for him but also offered several suggestions in line with everything mentioned here in the last couple of pages.

I did let them know that it wasn't an isolated incident, a lot of chatter about it here on maemo, not firmware related because it still happens even after flashing both the rootfs & emmc back to good old metric bog standard. Ovi is working fine on my N95, so the issue appears to be at their end and not ours.

I got the impression that just now they don't believe us. : ) Hopefully they'll figure it out though. I would suggest a few more of us fire off email to Nokia and Ovi, the more the better.

I do have sympathy for you guys with this Ovi Store problem, hope they sort it out :)

On another note...you are not missing anything trust me. The Ovi Store is so poor its not worth mentioning. I was laughed at by my mate using his iphone last weeek. He said, 'What the f**** is Ovi Store? It sucks hard' i almost punched him but realised he had a valid point.
Most of the great apps/games for this phone come from the repos' them guys deserve the true credit for anything worthwhile with this phone.

I cant believe Nokia is not aware of this issue - of OVI not working on N900.

I havent made any changes in mine and suddenly OVI does not work. So its certainly something Nokia did on their end.
And up till now not a response as yet - its Monday already ?

I think OVI will go the way of the Dodo if this is how Nokia handles issues.
