So far I have been unable to find one.

At least one that installs without jumping through hoops!

I couldn't find one either, ended up using a HTML one that was created by HTML Compiler from Bible Database. This link goes to where I got it from

I don't have an N800 yet, but this has already been mentioned on other threads:

This next one confuses me a bit, since I don't see clear-cut references to the N800:

Thats what I mean by jumping through hoops. To run those would be like useing a DOS program in Windows, Cumbersome and unneccesarally(sp) difficult.

With the number of excellant Bible programs available for the other PDA's or tablets I hope a Hildonized Bible will be forthcoming.

Online audio bible in NLT (New Living Translation), though KJV/NKJV also an option:

http://cf.blueletterbible.org/biblePlayer/mp3bibleplayer_BLB.swf

I found this link as a mini applet on another site, and it had the pleasant side-effect of opening 'full screen' when I surfed to it directly. On the N800, this full-screen behavior is perfect!

The only negative thing I can find is that when the screen blanker kicks in, silence ensues.

Hi there.

Rapier can be installed directly from a install file now .
http://hurdygurdy.dyndns.org/maemosword/

So there should be no more 'jumping through hoops' at installation stage.

However, it is still in developpment, so expects some bugs :)

Tim~

Were you successful installing the bible reader app? I am a bit of a Noob, and am not very savy to installing apps without the easy install links.

If anyone else was successful, a simple instruction set would be most helpful.

Thanks again.

Yes. But, although it's not a single-click DEB file, it's still very easy to install. All you have to do is add the Repos listed here:

http://hurdygurdy.dyndns.org/maemosword/

Unfortunately, that's where my progress has ended... Every time I attempt to add the modules (EN -- for English -- in my case), I get an error and it doesn't work: I get chapter numbers, but no textual content. :(

Has anyone else gotten further?

Hi there.

Unfortunately, that's where my progress has ended... Every time I attempt to add the modules (EN -- for English -- in my case), I get an error and it doesn't work: I get chapter numbers, but no textual content. :(

If you select 'EN' as in english_all.jpg , it will select all the availables modules in english (wich is quite a large number) and probably fail because of lack of space.

Try to select only one module for a start after having expanded the 'en' node (as in en_expand.jpg).

The check box in the lang directory is a ....'feature' i put there because i don't know how exactly how to have such a check box only in the childs nodes :o

You will have to remove the module that appear as being half installed and install it again.

If you have a terminal installed on the tablet, you may find easier to use the sword 'installmgr' utility to install modules.

Start by 'installmgr -init' and enable remote source then launch 'installmgr -r CrossWire'
Then:

- To see what is available locally:
installmgr -l

- To see what is available remotely:
installmgr -rl CrossWire

- To install a remote module such as ESV:
installmgr -ri CrossWire ESV

Launching rapier from a terminal will also gives more information about where the module installation is failing.

Hope it helps...

I was just able to install Rapier on my 770. I have been looking forward to this for a while now!

I did have some problems, but I rebooted and tried the module download again and it's working now.

Latest 770 firmware with some added debs for the latest minimo from the herring maemo.org repository.

There hasn't been much discussion on this but has any had luck putting GnomeSword together. I like it and use it on my desktop (for windoze). I am not really interested in the other program.

Or even a step by step instruction? Anyone?

Hi, just a heads up. I've finally managed to install Rapier on OS2008, using these instructions https://garage.maemo.org/tracker/?func=detail&atid=823&aid=1785&group_id=200 (thanks Pierre).

I'm not able to install any modules yet, (when I run installmgr -s, not Remote Sources are listed) but that might be a problem with my network connection. I'll try again later.

You could try Thummim (http://tony.maro.net/ossramblings/thummim.php). It's pretty a simple interface, but it does allow for bookmarks and highlighting. The document files (KJV is available) have to be "ripped" from online using a separate program on a computer and then copied over to your IT (or just PM me and I can email you the ones I've already ripped).

I found that when I changed the location of the modules that it wouldn't give me a list of modules to download. The reason, I discovered, was that the directory hadn't been created and rapier wouldn't create it. I could only tell by running rapier from the command line. Once I added the directory, then I could see the remote modules. I asked it to download the ESV module but it never finishes in a finite time (8 hours+) the download. It says that Index building may take a very, very long time. But I didn't ask for it to make an Index. I tried installing with installmgr and it says it installed ESV but when I open rapier, it doesn't show any installed modules.
I must be not looking in the right place.

Well I found that mods.d directory wasn't created so the *.conf files weren't installed even though it said they were. When I manually added the mods.d directory, it worked as expected. However, I can't get much out of some of the other modules such as the Institutes, MHC, and TSK. It doesn't download them correctly, and when I copy them from my PC, they don't display correctly. Also, how do I use the Strongs and Robinson's notes?

Hi there.

Index building may be long (along an hour or so), but download is supposed to take only a couple of minutes. The waiting window still show the warning for all operations.

I have no idea why a new conf directory could be created but not the subdirectory in it.
Can yo reproduce the problem systematically ? If yes, please tell how so i can have a look on it.

Since the last version, the location rapier use for module is not hard coded anymore in /usr/etc/sword.conf but changed on the fly according to a gconf key, you may need to use the SWORD_PATH environment variable to have it used by the regular sword utils, such as mkfastmod, by example.

SWORD_PATH=/home/mmc2/sword mkfastmod KJV

I did not try using SWORD_PATH environnement variable with the installmgr utility, but it is most probably mandatory otherwise it will try to install modules in the data_conf set in the global sword configuration and not in the one rapier use.

You can also just download a zip file from the crosswire web site (http://www.crosswire.org/sword/modules/ModDisp.jsp?modType=Bibles) and just unzip it in the directory rapier use to store modules.

The only sort of modules rapier uses are regular bible texts, you will have no success in tryin to use commentaries, dictionaries or commentary modules.

There is currently no notes related feature (be their your own or somebody else), and i do not plan to implement such a feature (at least for now), but i would happily accept patches if somebody write something that works :-)

Next planned feature is strong number , test package is available here:

I configured rapier to use a folder on my removable memory card. My initial problem occurred because this folder hadn't been created and rapier hung when it didn't create the folder. I was confused by the message that it was indexing, when it actually wasn't. Running rapier from the command line helped me figure this out. I didn't set the SWORD_PATH environment variable (not knowing about it), however. Rapier did create the modules directory but failed to create the mods.d directory. Creating it myself allowed everything to proceed normally and I can index the text, etc. I'll simply not use commentaries, dictionaries, etc at this point in time (although I can use them on my much less powerful Palm PDA).
Thanks!

Perhaps a related problem is that when I deleted some commentaries that I had added manually, it said they were deleted, but no files in modules or in mods.d were removed. I had to remove them manually.

pamadio
2008-01-16, 07:27
I realised there was this bug when i mentionned the use of SWORD_PATH in my previous post. Rapier launch installmgr to remove module, and there was no SWORD_PATH environment setting in place .

This should be fixed in next release too (but i may still have to change this stuff a bit).

This thread has a weird formatting issue to it - text moves to the right (viewing in Opera);
Nevertheless, I tried installing Rapier OTA last night a number of times and each time it failed when it got to the end of the download. I am not sure if it was my connection (BT to phone) or what, but I'll have to figure out another means to install it (aka turn on my dekstop and do it there, booooo).

I had the same issue with the mods.d folder not being created on the internal SD card. The .conf files were being written to a tmp directory and the program would index for hours. Once I manually created the mods.d folder and manually moved the .conf files there, all was well.

jimb
2008-01-17, 00:30
I did the same. I'm assuming that the Strong's dictionary module can't be viewed from within rapier. So we'll probably need the hard copy of Strong's next to the tablet, to manually look up the number we're interested in. Old school!
Any plans to integrate the Strong's content into rapier pamadio? That'd be a very nice tool.

pamadio
2008-01-17, 06:46
Strong's number are a new feature to me too :)

The way I'm currently using Strong's number is simply by searching for a given number reference (when the "strong number" box is checked, all search are done in the strong's number database and not on the clucene index anymore) to see where the same word has been used.

I havent looked at the dictionary module yet. I ll most probably check it out in the near future.

First test is available here:

Since 1.0.3-1test5, the dictionary entry that was searched is displayed in a window (that is, if you have the corresponding strong number module installed as well as the strong.db database available in the above link).

strong's definitions are working fine here. rapier is becoming a very powerful study tool. thanks pierre! :)

i don't know how complicated it would be. but to make strong's really easy to use, it'd be nice if you could just tap on a number in the text, and the definition popped up.

is kjv the only version that the numbers are integrated into?

edit : i guess it is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strong%27s_Concordance
that article does suggest an asv concordance has been done. i don't think it's in the sword library though. i just installed the asv module and the strongs checkbox did not show.

I try to implement something similar:
http://hurdygurdy.dyndns.org/maemosword/rapier_1.0.3-1test6_all.deb

You have to double click a number so it ends up selected in the textview. When this happens, a search is started too.

The only other module with Strong Number mentionned on the crosswire site is in russian (RusVZh).

They should be listed in the "en" (english) list of module available in manage/remote.

You can also just download them from the crosswire web site and unzip them in the directory where you store the other modules:

http://www.crosswire.org/sword/servlet/SwordMod.Verify?modName=StrongsGreek&pkgType=raw
http://www.crosswire.org/sword/servlet/SwordMod.Verify?modName=StrongsHebrew&pkgType=raw

The database is just an index of words per verse: the sword engine let one perform such a search, but as there is no index used, the time it would take would be too long (and there does not seem to be an option to use the clucene index for them).

Hi, I'm new to the N800 and new to Rapier. Could somebody point me to a place to learn more? I installed Rapier on OS2008, and it mostly is working, but I have a couple of problems/questions. It doesn't seem able to read non-Bible modules (e.g. Josephus), and uninstalling a module doesn't work. Thanks.

It doesn't seem able to read non-Bible modules (e.g. Josephus)

This is true, only Bible text module are taken care of.

uninstalling a module doesn't work.
This is also true and should be fixed in next version.

Current workaround is to use installmgr in a terminal.
You need to use the SWORD_PATH environment variable to tell where you store the modules.

By example:
____________________
[sbox-SDK_X86: ~] > SWORD_PATH=/home/user/sword/ installmgr -l

Installed Modules:

[ESV] - English Standard Version
[Josephus] - Josephus: The Complete Works
[KJV] - King James Version (1769) with Strongs Numbers and Morphology

[sbox-SDK_X86: ~] > SWORD_PATH=/home/user/sword/ installmgr -u Josephus

Removed module: [Josephus]

Next release should be ready next week or the week after (i just need to fix some bug when reinstalling after a backup and it should be ready).

The Strong's double click feature is great - I've been using it constantly in my Bible study. Reading the definitions, seeing how the same Gk/Heb word is used in other passages using the search pane. Thanks, this software is my most used app on the N800 now (along with maemopad+ to write notes - oneday if Rapier includes notes, that'll be replaced too!) :D

Pamadio, thanks for your work on Rapier! Works fine for me! Additionally, I was able to locate instructions for making my own modules and got NIV and NASB working on Rapier (disclaimer: yes, I know these translations are licensed, but I had already purchased a license through laridian.com for my pocketpc, which I'm no longer using). Instructions here:

http://www.crosswire.org/sword/develop/swordmodule/
http://www.crosswire.org/wiki/index.php/DevTools:Modules

Basically, I found the text online and wrote a simple C++ program to parse the text into the verse per line format and then grabbed the vpl2mod.exe program from:

http://crosswire.org/ftpmirror/pub/sword/utils/win32/

You have to create your own .conf file but it's not hard at all when you're importing a module of the rawText type. I had to transfer the modules and the conf files onto my external mini-sd card.

Indexing my ESV, NIV, and NASB modules took about 15-20 minutes and that kinda freaked me out, and then when I tried a test search for "man" I thought the machine hung cause it was taking so long, but it ended up taking around 70 seconds.

Ran into some snags the other day while attempting to import the NAB. The vpl2mod.exe program that is available apparently checks text versification against the KJV schema. The NAB had quite a few extra verses that are not found in the KJV and threw a bunch of warnings at me. Come to think of it, I don't recall whether or not it threw flags for extra *books* in the NAB.

Anyways, this helped me find some bugs in my original parser and when I fixed it and re-ran my NASB text on it, I discovered that 3 John 1:15 only exists in the NASB! That is to say, 3 John 1:14 is 1 verse in KJV but it's split into 2 verses in the NASB. And because 3 John 1:15 is not recognized as being a valid KJV reference, you get a warning. Yay.

After doing some googling this morning I found many posts and threads pointing this to be a known concern within the Sword community, though I'm not sure of how they're moving to resolve it. I took a look at the source for Sword as well and found that the versification validation schema is hardcoded into canon.h and therefore modifications to vpl2mod.cpp to ignore validation or canon.h to accomodate extra verses has implications not only for importing certain modules but also accessing them as the tree-based GUI is undoubtedly referencing canon.h as well.

So, I'm going to drop my attempts to import NAB and content myself to reading it online when comparing notes with Catholic friends. However, I still need the NASB for seminary, so I'm just going to modify the NASB text to merge 3 John 1:14-15.

Also while researching into this topic, I discovered some bash script utilities that allow users to download the text from online Bible sites and compile them into modules for import into Sword. They can be found here:

http://karl.kleinpaste.org/sword/scripts/scripts.tar.gz

There's an interesting text.bugs file included that describes other deviations from the standard KJV versification schema and suggests reasonable means of accomodating them.

Pamadio, don't know how active you are here on the forums. May I suggest creating a thread for Rapier specifically in the Apps section? I'd like to contribute towards getting dictionaries and concordances working on Rapier, as well as other features such as personal markup. As in, formatting key words or phrases as we read so we'll remember them, as well as adding notes. I see a lot of potential for the internet tablet to be used as a personal Bible study tool and think it'd be great to have this capability built into Rapier =)

Hi there.

I have created a new thread (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?p=149571) in the Apps forums for question specific to rapier.

Help is welcome :-)

Redshift, please create a login on http://garage.maemo.org and click the "Request to join" button on the rapier page (https://garage.maemo.org/projects/rapier/) or send me your garage login.

Please also subscribe to the rapier-devel mailing list (https://garage.maemo.org/mailman/listinfo/rapier-devel)

You may also want to subscribe to the sword devel mailing list (http://crosswire.org/sword/lists/index.jsp) and hang out on irc (freenode #sword) to get in touch with sword developpers.

As far as creating NIV or NASB sword compatible modules is concerned, Crosswire would not be allowed to distribute them for copyright reason (I feel really weird that copyright can be set on bible translation, but hey, this is the world we live in :-) ) .

The site you mentionned (http://karl.kleinpaste.org/sword/scripts/) contain enough information to let you create such module that you can use for yourself (but not distribute). I made a NIV module successfully with them.

I'm not currently coding on rapier, but was thinking of rewriting it again, with gettext support and libglade, and making something more finger friendly as requested by Antoine.

Trying to use a html rendering (https://garage.maemo.org/projects/python-gtkhtml2/) instead of a gtk textview could also be a good idea.

Thanks for your feedback and help proposal !

I almost started a new thread on this-

I tried Rapier on my 770 (using OS2007HE) and abandoned it as Rapier seems unfinished compared to Gnomesword or Bibletime. It also is very demanding of resources. (Seems to be a 800 or 810 suited program more than the 770)

I installed Garnet VM (Formerly Palm OS) and Bibleplus with the settings the way I had them on my Tungsten E I sold to buy the 770. My wife and I had twin Palm and I had them both set the same way. I have the advantage that all my Bibles were on the SD Card in the Palm.

I set the VM background image the same as my home page and so the top and side bars disappear, the background is still there and the Palm looks like my Tungsten E did. It appears seamless on the 770. It also appears the same as my wifes with the program running.

If anyone has the scripts for creating sword modules would it be possible for you to send them to me, the ones from http://karl.kleinpaste.org/sword/scripts/ as he has taken the scripts off because of people not following the rules,
I previously had them, but rebuilt my computer and when I went to get them again they were missing

So If anyone can get them to me that would be great

Redshift, did I read your post correctly, that you found a way to use Laridian bibles in Rapier?

I've been a Laridian customer for years, and own NIV for both the Palm platform and Windows mobile. I installed Rapier on my N800 but have since taken it off due to the lack of the NIV.

I looked at your references but the wiki does not specifically mention the Laridian file format that I could see. Is it actually one of the ones listed by another name?

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, I would be very grateful for some fairly explicit instructions on converting the Laridian modules.
