Interesting news and pictures from engadget.com today about Intel's MID UMPCs.
Looks to me to be running a version of MAEMO OS. I'm an APPLE fanboy through and through and cant wait to get my hands on the iphone but still long for a device that has a sceen 6-7 inches and APPLE's intergration and ease of use. Thats why i bought a 770 in the first place ( no MicroSoft inside ).

Apparently it will also use a "Mozilla based" browser. Looks like Asian languages will be supported - Intel aren't stupid, but Nokias lack of Asian support suggests they are.

What's the betting the Intel device will have working 3D and OpenGL, and lots of other good hardware stuff that Nokia didn't bother to activate despite being present in the N800?

Wake up Nokia...

It seems like Intel is announcing later this week their own flavor of internet tablets they are calling MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices). From a presentation document (PDF) Intel has officially released, what we can gather are the following:    Foundation leverages Gnome Linux Desktop Technology, GTK+, DBUS, GConf     Intel developed user interface called 'Master User Interface'     New Linux distro called RedFlag MIDINUX (v1.0 to be available sometime May)     Support of the Intel 915 chipsets     Finger-friendly     Applications    Browser, news reader, IM, VoIP     Media player, audio recorder, image viewer, camera     GPS, email, PDF reader, Bluetooth    18 second boot time, 3.2 second resume time
From the screenshots, the MIDs look like Maemo with Intel's customized front-end Master User Interface (MUI), finger freindly, application launcher. It is not yet clear how far Maemo and RedFlag MIDINUX will inter-operate but you can be sure that both platforms will be covered in Internet Tablet Talk. A lot more images after the jump. MID Screenshots: Read the full article. (http://www.internettablettalk.com/2007/04/16/intel-mobile-internet-devices-coming/)

FYI, Intel MID threads have been merged.
yes, thanks, I've typed long reply and when submitting I saw invalid thread id an everything was lost :-)

What I wanted to say is - let's see how they can match power efficiency of ARM platform. They talk about boot and suspend/resume time a lot. That means they either don't get it or they know their devices won't last long in always on mode. Also it will take year of two until we see real devices so I wouldn't hold my breath.

But x86 compatibility and PC-like hardware would be nice and would solve some problems of current Internet Tablets.

That's a year for Nokia to start delivering on the software quality and innovating in the hardware again - the N800 hardware (particularly the graphics performance) seems to be a step back from the 770. The extra memory and CPU performance is very nice, but so much in the SoC isn't actually used.

The N900 needs to see improved graphics performance and 3D support would be a good idea. Dumping Opera in favour of Minimo/Mozilla doesn't sound like a bad idea either.

Battery life needs to be improved - a larger capacity battery would be welcome as it's unlikely to come via any other route.

I fully expect the Intel device to be heavier (huge battery) and more expensive (dual core cpus?!) but I also hope it will give Nokia a kick up the @rse.

According to the article it looks like intel is going to offer the umpc without vista and instead using linux. Some of the pictures in the gallery look alot like maemo.

The OS snapshots remind me of that Maemo knockoff we glimpsed at on that strange Chinese UMPC at CeBit. Could that have been a proto of sorts ?

Anyway, maybe these "tablets" run Linux, but they're still not instant on and twice as expensive as the Nokias...

It seems that the PDF is from a presentation. And i think at the presentation also was showed how something at maemo works.

Vastly more powerful than an N800, all built-in hardware supported rather than ignored, better sofrware (Mozilla! Possibly Flash 9?) Double the price? DEAL! :)

Even if twice the weight, and half the battery life ? :-)

it all boils down to value for money...

if you can use it 2 times more effectively, and you can afford the 2 times more price, then you can consider getting it!

to me, effectively using the device (not fighting it) is value to me. whatever the OS, hardware/software, if I am unable to capture that "effective use" value, then its not worth it to me.

the intel umpc video is incredible, i love it... ithink the n800 can do all in this video but need more software , for develop audio vocal recognition et big hard drive :) ... and hsdpa / phone capability.

i think if an N900 become with that , umpc style with good interface , it will kill the PC on our desktop :) (it's a good thing :)

The software is the most important things in tablet (internet , umpc and now mid) platform for customer...
'see the iphone software : EXCELENT

This will accelerate the development of linux on handhelds. Additional corporate development is great for all n800/770 owners.

What I do not understand:
On slide 5, they compare MID (Linux) to UMPC (Windows).
Under "Platform Openness", they say:

MID: Mixed
UMPC: Open

I would have guessed the opposite. What could this mean? Maybe they're planning a device that only runs pre-installed software and restricted applets, similiar to the iPhone?

That's possible - the "finger friendly" GUI does look a bit like Canola and I don't mean to be unkind to Canola but that suggests the device is "dumbed down" so it may indeed be more restrictive than the Nokia platform.

I suspect that since Intel are only offering reference platforms (ie. example hardware) that anyone can put whatever they want on the device once the hardware is for sale, and since it will be mostly based on PC hardware I imagine there might be several distributions and GUIs offered in the long term - whether a desktop GUI is appropriate for this type of device is up for debate. :)

Exactly! I use atleast 10 hours of battery life DAILY on my Nokia N800 (I work 12 hour shifts) and I want this all to weigh under 1 pound. I do not need more power or a 100% stable operating system (except the Java does make me envious).

i reading informations from intel about the futur Mid technology... and i thinks that a good things for us but bad for nokia ... because the price of the "umpc" must dicrease and internet tablet as n800 will die. and if nokia has no new internet tablet project :()

now we will stand for avaiblilty of MID and PRICE !! the big problem

What is the power consumption of the N800 Processor? The AMD Geode uses0.9-1.5 Watts at 800Mhz, and the Intel Stealey used in the new devices is supposed to consume 3 Watts.

:) Everything said and done, I think Nokia is going to meet its match. Intel is notorious for hardballing Industry bigwigs. There have been so many little industries that Intel gobbled up in its wake. Not that this will happen to Nokia. Intel is like a gorilla, who at any instance can go berserk on you. I worked for Intel, and to some tiny little extent, I like to think that I know how they think. If they seriously get into this MID business then Nokia better watch out. With the money, power and the clout that Intel has it may just as well beat the crap out of Nokia. The fact that Intel MIDs will be using a Chinese flavor of Linux is also a wake up call for Nokia who did not care much and would not / could not make the most of the cool hand they dealt to themselves.

Unless and until someone at ITT has personal experience with the Intel MIDs we cannot say much but from what we hear and see, the MIDs will be a very strong challenge for Nokia. If they do not come up with some way to keep their loyal fan base happy then it could be a lost cause. It maybe possible that Nokia is already worried about this and so we may see better Nokia ITs soon.

We know that initially Nokia was able to attract us with their ITs but gradually we found out that they were just testing the waters. When finally they decided to get serious we see that they are not putting enough efforts behind their products (other than the phones perhaps) and this could be the main cause of their downfall. Now that they have attracted the gorilla, they better learn to live with it or at least tame it. They surely need to keep their fan base satisfied or it could be bye-bye Nokia.

Here is an article with a youtube video of an Intel MID tablet booting XP:

http://www.umpcportal.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=506

It's hellishly slow - the demonstrator even thinks the battery has died mid way through the boot, hehe! :)

The device itself looks very nice though - "runs on cell phone batteries" (hopefully just the one!) and lasts "4 to 6 hours". This could be huge in 2008 for Intel and if (big if) the battery figures for the Intel 45nm CPU are correct it could give ARM cores a run for their money.

Nokia, start talking to AMD and see what low power x86 processors they have up their sleeves!!! :)

Screenshots of Red Flag Linux, GUI and applications:

It's got Email and RSS News Reader apps - what's the betting they're not half as cr@p as ours? Although they do look disturbingly familiar so they could be the same applications! :) Are these guys feeding their changes back - these apps are full of bugs and if they've fixed any bugs it sure would be nice to see them shared with the rest of us!

And is that Dates posing as the Calendar app?

Red Flag uses Matchbox and Hildon, no wonder everything looks familiar.

Maybe we should be running Red Flag?

That'd be sweet if we can do that with the 770. It'd have a second life then! :)
