View Full Version : [Release] Okuda theme (N900)

It took longer than I expected, but I finally got the Okuda theme for N900/Maemo 5 to a releasable state. The package is now available in the Extras repository so you can find it in your Application Manager (or just click here to install (http://maemo.org/downloads/product/raw/Maemo5/hildon-theme-okuda/?get_installfile) if you're reading this on your N900). You'll have to reboot after switching themes for various icons and text colors to take effect (Maemo bug 3659 (http://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3659)). Send feedback and bug reports to lcars [at] synthesize.us (or just post in this thread).

The theme includes 403 icons, for which I made a custom template (below). The icon template gets sliced during the build process, just like the rest of the theme. Source is available (http://repository.maemo.org/extras-testing/pool/fremantle/free/source/h/hildon-theme-okuda/), so if any other theme makers want to cover lots of icons, this should make that a bit easier. (If you want to theme a different selection of icons, you could make your own template layout with the script at the bottom of this old post (http://faceted.wordpress.com/2008/09/21/preview-of-our-new-maemo-theme/) by my brother.)

The theme installs two wallpaper sets. Details here (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=773479#post773479).

A replacement sounds package to complement the Okuda theme is now available in the extras repository. See this thread (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=761589) for more info.

The Okuda theme is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 license.

Changes in 1.0.2:

Made contact and bookmark desktop widget thumbnails opaque
Changed ActiveTextColor (E-mail message list, etc) (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=762871#post762871)
Changed AccentColors (names in IM/SMS conversations)
Changed small notebook/tab graphics (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=761739#post761739)
Changed RSS desktop widget (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=761739#post761739)
Changed theme icon (theme selection dialog)
Changed virtual keyboard button clicked state
Made tick mark icons visible in Manage views dialog (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=774397#post774397)
Made Media player desktop widget icons larger
Added list line dividers (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=760048#post760048)
Removed general_sms icon (may eventually be re-added along with other icons like it)

Seems to work nicely, though I think you should remove the blue border on the desktop and the fat background behind the desktop icons(they appear to use up more space now).

EDIT: Unrelated question, does anyone know if you can get the current theme directory in Xterm?

Unfortunately I don't have time to do the app icons any time soon, but maybe eventually.

Seems to work nicely, though I think you should remove the blue border on the desktop and the fat background behind the desktop icons(they appear to use up more space now).

It's easy enough to use a solid black png as your wallpaper if you want to get rid of the outline. Maybe I'll package one in a later version. I'll play around with the applet sizes too.

EDIT: Unrelated question, does anyone know if you can get the current theme directory in Xterm?
All the themes are in /opt/usr/share/themes/ but I'm not actually sure how to check which theme is in use on the command line, if that's what you're asking.

very nice theme, but the button that should appear on top of the screen when for example you want to delete multiple mails or photos stays totally invisible. the button is there allright and you can use it, if you know where it is supposed to be.
Oops, I'll fix that soon.

Like I said above, I'm busy with other projects and can't really keep adding icons right now. I've covered 403, and there are about 1000 left... I had to stop somewhere, but I encourage you to pick up where I left off. :) That envelope is themed because I saw it was used on a few buttons (and didn't notice it in that list til later).

Glad you guys like the theme. :)

Oh, I thought it actually was in theme somehow. Anyway you've seem to have set a color wrong somewhere, in OMWeather you can't see the main text(it's black but should be white IMO).

I think that's more of a bug with OMWeather. It appears they're using ButtonTextColor but only displaying the button graphics for the clicked state... They should either use DefaultTextColor or the generic button graphic for the normal states of those buttons. I don't actually use OMWeather currently, but I'll file a bug with them at some point (unless you beat me to it).

Though I would have to thank you profusely for releasing the source, which means I can actually mod it myself when I find myself some free time.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with. I made everything with Inkscape and included the SVG files in the source, so you could actually make batch color changes by search/replacing hex color values with a text editor.

Actually, I think it would be possible if I were to alter the transitions. I haven't really checked out how they're configured, but if I turned off the blurring and zooming, the app menu background would be the currently selected wallpaper (and the default Okuda wallpaper is just the blue outline.) I'm not sure how hard it is to adjust transitions, but I'll look into it at some point.

So far it's an-Droid, pip-boy and okuda that are my favourites. If only joppu would update the pipboy one to use nice backgrounds in the lock screen...

I just pushed a new version (1.0.1) to extras-testing, so please test it and vote to promote (http://maemo.org/packages/package_instance/view/fremantle_extras-testing_free_armel/hildon-theme-okuda/1.0.2/) if you find no major problems. (Votes are version-specific, so if you already voted on 1.0.0, please do so again.)

Changes in 1.0.1:

Added missing buttons. (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=756026#post756026)
Added missing app menu indicator triangle.
Made app launcher applets smaller. (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=755615#post755615)
Corrected debian/copyright file.

Actually, the theme already includes two wallpaper sets. The default wallpaper (which should be set when you select the theme) is just the blue outline, and it's labeled "Theme - Okuda" in the list of backgrounds. The other set, labeled "Image set - Okudagram", has the circular graphic on one of the four screens.

Ian, awesome theme. Using it as I speak.

One thing I would like to see is green or blue separation lines in lists.
eg. A line between each contacts, calendar and selection lists.
Without it, it just doesn't look as nice and is harder to use imo.

Really enjoying this theme. Here are some issues I've noticed:

Selected tab contrast on QT apps is hard to read, the tab is white, and text stays cyan
the X Icon that shows when you hit the reload button on the RSS applet looks to be a couple of pixels high of center
The misbehaved widgets that don't fit in like nokia messaging, but I doubt you're to blame here

Keep up the good work.

Checking out the sound pack now....

Shame on all of you claiming that their n900 looks like a panel from the 1701-D. This particular theme is clearly much closer to the panels on the 1701-B excelsior than the newer galaxy class ships  .

I really like this theme, but just as go1dfish says : sometimes things are hard to read. I noticed for instance in the foreca-weather application that the cities you choose are put as black text on a black button background. Or in the feedingit reader, read message titles are displayed as black (or very dark grey) on a dark grey background.

I'm sure you will work this out in a next update.

Since i installed the theme I was already wondering a couple of days of it was not possible to adjust the system sounds to a more 'trekkie'-like sound, and today I read that you made a special soundpackage available. Great ! Have to try this out, but it is not available for download yet in the extras-testing at this moment.

Unfortunately, the custom sounds remain in use regardless of which theme is selected (as noted in the package description). To restore the original sounds, just uninstall the Okuda/LCARS sounds package. Obviously, since the theme is packaged separately, you can still use it without the sounds, or vice versa. See this post (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=761589) for details about the sounds package.

I intentionally removed those, but I'll consider bringing them back. No promises...

That actually affects some non-Qt apps as well. I'll definitely try to fix that.

the X Icon that shows when you hit the reload button on the RSS applet looks to be a couple of pixels high of center

The stop and reload icons for the RSS desktop applet are also used in the RSS application. To make the RSS applet look consistent with the other applets, I raised its button graphics and icons a few pixels, which left the icons off-center when used in other places. Since it's not a functional problem (and it's kind of hard to fix) it's not at the top of my list, but I'll figure something out eventually.

Heh I wasn't going to say anything, but right you are. :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I don't actually think I can fix those... The Okuda theme only sets a few colors to black, and all of them are intentional. I'm fairly certain that any black text on dark backgrounds is a result of the application not being fully/properly themeable. For example, it looks like ForecaWeather is using the theme-defined ButtonTextColor (which is black in the case of the Okuda theme) on top of dark-grey custom button graphics which cannot be themed. Essentially if an app doesn't use themeable graphics, it shouldn't use the theme-defined text colors either, or you'll inevitably see usability issues like this with certain themes. The FeedingIt reader issue is a little harder to pinpoint... but again, I don't think the theme is at fault, but rather the app's use of non-standard/theme-unfriendly UI elements.

Please keep posting here if you find more unusable or non-ideal text colors; some cases I'll probably be able to fix, others are out of my control. Having looked at the cases you described, I'd suggest filing bugs with the developers of those apps.

Yeah, not to mention it's only visible for a few seconds. But I needed 2 items to make a list ;)

I would like to add a vote of confidence for the blue border on the theme background, it's a nice touch. Right now if you try to line up a widget with the outer line/curve, you'll get some shadow where the widget meets the line. This would probably be impossible to fix without jaggies though.

Really dig it, the sound pack is top notch as well, I have some feedback to leave on that thread as well.

The OMWeather bug (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11036) was filed, and they've already pushed a fixed version to extras-devel.

I don't have Web2SMS configured on my device, and it looks like I'd need to make an account to set it up... If you could post a screenshot of the invisible text, and another of the same screen in one of the built-in themes, I'll try to figure out whether the bug is in the theme or the app. If it's black text on a black background, I suspect the bug is in the app.

Sorry, but I don't really want to change that, as I like the look of the buttons and don't have any trouble reading them. Maybe I (or someone else) will release a variant with different buttons/colors at some point.

Thanks for the screenshots. Assuming the highlighted text ("Text marked") is invisible (black on black) when not highlighted, I think it's up to the app's developers to fix it. They should probably use DefaultTextColor there.

For Ian: how can I choose between wallpapers of your theme?

You select wallpapers the usual way... Tap on the desktop, tap the gear icon, and select "Change background" (assuming you're using the English localization).

The theme installs two background sets; one with the circular design seen in my avatar, labeled "Image set - Okudagram" (on English-localized devices), and one with just the blue outline, labeled "Theme - Okuda". Both of the theme's wallpapers usually show up at the top of the list when the theme is in use.

Unfortunately the thumbnail for the "Theme - Okuda" wallpaper is actually just the theme's icon, which includes the circular graphic even though it doesn't actually appear on that wallpaper. Sorry for the confusion. Since you're not the first to ask about this, I think I'll edit the OP to mention it.

I have no idea why that's happening, but I don't think it could be caused by the theme... The Okuda theme doesn't do anything differently from the other themes (aside from covering a larger number of icons than most). No custom transitions, and nothing else out of the ordinary... Since no one else has reported any problems like this with the theme, I think there must be something else wrong on your phone. Did you install or change anything else around the time the crashes started?

If all else fails, I'd suggest backing up and flashing (http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware#Updating_.26_Flashing _your_device) your N900. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you. :/

Do you currently have the Okuda theme selected, or one of the default themes?

Maemo automatically caches screenshots of certain app UIs, which it momentarily displays when the apps are first launched to provide the illusion of a faster loading time. Sometimes the screenshot it displays is from a theme which is no longer selected, which is what I think is happening in your case. It should work itself out on its own, but you're likely to see this occasionally if you switch themes regularly. Someone should probably file a bug on that (if it hasn't already been done), but it's kind of a tough one because the problem occurs intermittently and I don't know of any reliable way to reproduce it.

thanks for your reply ian. i probably did install a few other programs at the same time but to be honest i cant remember what they were. unfortunately ive had to stop using the theme as the freezing problem keeps on happening and it is too much of a pain having to to turn the phone off/on, shame as i relly liked this theme.
as for flashing im too much of a newb to try that.
anyway i have installed the okuda system sounds and they are great and make the 900 sound really high tech, thanks for those.

If the crashing seems to have stopped for now, would you mind un-installing and re-installing the Okuda package and trying the theme once more? I'd be curious to know if the problem persists.

Just wanted to note that the text color problems with FeedingIt RSS Reader, OMWeather, and Web2SMS have been fixed by the developers of those apps. Many thanks to those who filed bugs, and to the awesome developers who fixed them so quickly!

Web2SMS v0.1.2-8 is available in extras-testing (http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-testing#How_to_activate_Extras-testing), and needs more testers and votes (http://maemo.org/packages/package_instance/view/fremantle_extras-testing_free_armel/web2sms/0.1.2-8/).
OMWeather v0.28.4 is also in extras-testing, and will hopefully be promoted in a couple days since it's already received enough votes (http://maemo.org/packages/package_instance/view/fremantle_extras-testing_free_armel/omweather/0.28.4/).
FeedingIt RSS Reader v0.8.0-7 is currently in extras-devel (http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-devel).
Okuda theme v1.0.2 is still in extras-testing, and needs a few more votes (http://maemo.org/packages/package_instance/view/fremantle_extras-testing_free_armel/hildon-theme-okuda/1.0.2/).

Love the theme -- just noticed one issue that doesn't seem to be going away with reboots, etc:

Is anyone else seeing this?

Also noticed the 'Now Playing' shortcut in media player (icon that shows up in the bottom right) is the default.

Otherwise, this is just brilliant :)

Yeah many of the media player graphics are unthemeable, including the now playing shortcut. I'd file a bug with Nokia, but it seems like they don't even respond to bug reports anymore, much less actually fix them. :(

The fullscreen media player controls seem to just reuse the regular media player button graphics (with bad cropping applied for no apparent reason). I could fix that by making the buttons smaller (i.e. just the symbols, without the rounded blue rectangle behind them). I don't really want to release an update just for that, but I'll probably change it if/when I get some more bug reports to fix at the same time.

Yeah it's definitely not dire enough to warrant you going to any trouble over.. I just wanted to be sure there wasn't something off about my particular install. :)

Great theme.
Is there any chance that you will create matching video for booting? :D

Also, I can't see any background, only blue frames on black. When I'm trying to choose "Theme - Okuda" it marks "Okudagram".
I'm using freshly reflashed PR1.2 and only apps from Extras.

The "Theme - Okuda" wallpaper is just the blue outlines on black, and "Image set - Okudagram" has the circular design on one of the four screens. Do you have all four desktops enabled? Can you select other wallpapers? I'm not sure what could be causing the problem you're having, but if it's still happening I'd suggest removing, reinstalling, and reapplying the theme, and then rebooting.

I really like this theme. Thankyou!

There were a bunch of media player icons not being used so I moved them over manually into default. I really like them, too. And I swapped the default buttons back in to avoid the size conflict. They don't really match but will be ok. I may try make new ones if I can find an easy png editor.

With LCARS fonts on some beecons the machine look really neat. Thanks again!

With Theme Customizer you can tweak font colors.

Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do about that, because it's actually a bug in the contact app itself. (It uses the theme's ButtonTextColor on non-button objects, resulting in invisible text.) I could change the ButtonTextColor in the theme, but that would change the look of buttons everywhere, and the theme's current colors work fine with any correctly-built UI. I did file a bug (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11014) which you could vote on, but Nokia has already said they'll only fix "critical" bugs in Maemo 5 at this point so I doubt this one will be resolved.

I wanna tweak buttons backgrounds and other GUI elements as well

You could modify theme images on your device (they're in /opt/usr/share/themes/okuda/images/ and /opt/usr/share/icons/okuda/) but then you'd have to work on one image at a time, and you'd have no easy way to share your modifications.

The better option would be to download the theme source (http://maemo.org/packages/source/view/fremantle_extras_free_source/hildon-theme-okuda/1.0.2/), make your changes in the SVG templates (they were made with Inkscape, but you could actually make batch color changes to the SVG files with search/replace in a text editor), export the modified SVGs as PNGs, and rebuild the theme (http://wiki.maemo.org/MADDE/Theme_building). If you do this, be sure to look through all the text files in the source and change them as needed (add your name/email to the maintainer field, change the package name, theme name, etc.) I'd be happy to look over your modified source before you upload it to extras-devel if you want.
