You have to enable root access if you want to use apt-get.
Can you post the exact error message from the application manager.

regards
nicolai

But i do not understand why everything was ok and them for some unknown reason it do not appear any more programs on the application manager.

When i try to install some app directly from the Maemo.org site on the downloads, it opens automatically the application manager program , and after trying to download it appear a following error message:

unable to download 'app name'
Application package not found

Did you did, what nicolai said ?
paste the error message from application log.
Also mention, what new has been installed since it was last working ?

And as root, when you run "apt-get update" what does it says ?

Nicolai said, i have to enable the root access, right?

How can i enable it? Because on the application manager i have configured a lot of catalogs (Maemo extras , Extras-devel, Extras devel-Testing , maemo.org.... also from ovi store, etc..) and now when i open the program and click on DOWNLOAD the only thing that appears is a information saying "operation failed and then (NO APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE)"

Since the last working that was 3 days ago, i didnīt install any app.... it stop working with no reason!!! :(

in x-terminal root, when i run "apt-get update" what does it says is the following:
"E: Could not open lock file /var/Lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13 permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the list directory "

In the beginning i thought that the catalogs links were down..... but it seems that iīm the only one that canīt make the access to them.

I realy need you help....

one more test, do on xterminal

ls -lrt /var/lib/apt/lists
if this directory dosent exists you have to create it as root.

mkdir -p /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
and then
apt-get update

" Is -lrt /var/lib/apt/lists
-sh: Is: not found

mkdir -p /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
apt-get update
E: Could not open lock file /var/Lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13 permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the list directory "

are you doing it as root ?

sorry while copying it didn't copied the correct syntax, thats why you get not found, its lower "L" at begining, but while copying the syntax it says capital "I", so try it again and paste the output

ls -lrt /var/lib/apt/lists

it means, that some of your package is corrupted and needs to be fixed. post the output of the command which I mentioned before to check whats inside that directory.

It looks like you have lots of package installed, and probably one or some of it is causing the problem.

Lets try to clean it up,
You need root access for it, if you dont have root search the forum on how to install it. and once logged in as root do.

rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*

mkdir -p /var/lib/apt/lists/partial

apt-get update

it will re-create the entries for you. I would also suggest you disable all the repositories before in application manager and leave only ovi, nokia ones and maemo.org and try the above.

Hopefully it should work.
Cheers

i i searching how to access to root... i need to install rootsh program?
how can i , if the program manager is down?

the codes that you mentioned are for written on the x- terminal?

manvik60
2010-07-26, 19:15
yes, you have to write in xterminal, when you have gained root access.

For rootsh, you can try to install it manually.
-- Download the file http://repository.maemo.org/extras/pool/fremantle/free/r/rootsh/rootsh_1.5_armel.deb
-- Once downloaded you have to copy this from your PC to n900, lets say copy it to /home/user
-- once you have the file in n900. do
cd /home/user
dpkg -i rootsh_1.5_armel.deb
And it will install the rooth, after this you type "sudo gainroot".

I am not sure, but try to download and save this file directely from your phone. might be it will work.

Good luck, search forum, if you are stuck. or we will see tomorrow.

Wouldn't he need to be root to do dpkg? I saw nicolai say in another thread that he could save the file in MyDocs and then launch it from the file manager.

Hi !

if any one experienced this problem (getting root credentials)
do this :
1. download .deb file from http://repository.maemo.org/extras/p..._1.5_armel.deb to N900 directory.

2. from file manager browse to N900 directory and tap on this file

it will launch App manager and will install rootsh :)

now open xTerminal and type this command to get root credential

sudo gainroot

Cheers !
