ok folks, i aint skilled enough to do this myself so im putting out this request to others on here.
im looking for a dev(s) who can write a maemo app to auto install nitdroid and dependancys as well as offer user a few options for custom settings(overclocking/etc)
anyone up for a challenge
cheers
I'd love to see this being done, +1 for the request.
man I really hope this gets developed!

Oh yeah!!! Nitdroid for dummies! If some creates a easy, simple to use appliacation for the N900 with function to multiboot Maemo and Droid, I'll pay for that! Hell..., a over clocking appliacation for dummies would nice too! I plan to pimp out my N900 when I sexy 4g phone! Maybe the HTC HD3....,if it's real!

i'm confused of what you want to get, something like Easy Debian? autoinstalling Android from App Manager? in eMMC? (dont know if already android installation in internal memory is posible).
Seems you are sequesting some 1st-class coders.. you can ask qole but dont hold your breath in that

Hi!
I just went through the manual steps to install NITDroid yesterday and it was successful! However, I absolutely see the need to have a simpler way to install it to make it more 'mainstream'. Although I do have some understanding of what would be required to build such an installation app, I'm sure there are plenty of people better suited to the task. I'll contribute by trying to structure the requirements. Please add on/modify/elaborate as necessary.
Project Name: NITDroid Installer
Purpose: An application (read: deb package) that can be installed from the repositories (extras-devel, extras, ...) to install NITDroid to the eMMC.
Please note that just because I have written the requirements, it doesn't mean that it will be possible to implement them!
1. Performs pre-installation checks.
What's the size?
Enough space for NITDroid?
Check the SD Card
Is it empty? Prompt for backup?
As some Sandisk SD cards have issues, check if it is one of those?
Chose version of NITDroid
Developer version vs. 'stable' version?
2. Performs all the steps outlined in the Manual installation guide (http://www.nitdroid.com/index.php?title=N900-install).
Provide configuration options, e.g. partitioning options
3. Additional configurations
Overclocking?
Multiboot?
Anything else?
4. Uninstall/reinstall/upgrade NITDroid
All of this while storing a log-file with all actions executed and outputs in order to enable troubleshooting.
Oh, if someone actually starts building this, please let everyone else know. The last thing we want is for two ppl to start working on this without knowing about each other...

good to see someone is looking at it. and yep need to ask user if they need overclocking and if so what speeds etc they want also need to offer to install power kernel and item in multiboot
edit : would also likely be better to have app download req files itself rather than adding them in the deb to save time and having to up a new installer for each release. not sure if thats doable though.

bumping this, just wionderign if anyone has decided to look into it :)
how about a ps3 controller app. for dummys while were at it.
I believe Toja is working on scripts that could be used and adapted to help with this and there is an autoinstaller progress that could probably be implimented to make this easier. Just need a skilled devel to put it all together and make a nice gui to take the various inputs.

just a quick bump, we now have a fairly stable installer that could be used as base for a gui, anyone up for coding one/already workign on one :)
I'm no developer, but sounds like things are moving along nicely :)

yep slowly getting their, just need a nice easy to use gui and it will be simple to install :)
I think i just peed my pants at the thought of a gui installer for nitdroid. Out of excitement of course.

I'll see your bet and raise my wife!
If they'd really want to mainstream it, I'd like to see an easyDroid :B At least until NITDroid gets full access to N900 hardware drivers. But I guess that is way off topic here.

I think I can answer that... memory card :)
so would I be correct in saying that if I wanted to get rid of Nitdroid all I would need to do would be to format/erase the memory card?
DrWilken
2010-08-16, 20:27
Nope. That wouldn't get rid of the multiboot part which is installed on the internal memory.

Nope, sadly I haven't got an extra microsd card. I gave my 8GB card to my girlfriend a few months ago when she got a HD camera. Bad decision, but it made her happy (which made me happy)... ;)
Now, back on topic :)
I am trying it.. fell into a well first as it said could not create a log file as the directory did not exist.. so i manually created .nitdroid and ran the installer again.. installer is running.. unmounted.. created partitions, formatted it.. mounted.. now downloading files which takes a little long time.. so excited..
I'm all ready to go, but I have a 4gb Sandisk memory card, and I read that they were causing some problems...
just tried the installer then and im come into some problems.
this came up when after typing in YES for the installer...
/usr/bin/nitdroid-installer: line 547: cannot create /home/user/MyDocs/.nitdroid/installer.log: nonexistant directory
any ideas?
holy potatoes.. installed and now I am booting NITDroid.. *i think i just shat my pants*

create the .nitdroid directory manually in that location /home/user/MyDocs/ and then run the installer again.

ok so if there are upadtes of ntdroid, there are updates for the installer too?
and how do we update if a new version comes out?
like maemo updates?
i mean, complete reinstall and loss of data?
or jus specific things will be targeted?
What happens if we try to do this without a memory card? (I'm just curious)
And what's the minimum memory the card can have for it to work?
What happens if we try to do this without a memory card? (I'm just curious)
And what's the minimum memory the card can have for it to work?
well i'm guessing that the installer is supposed to locate a memory card to install onto and if it doesnt find one then I guess it just won't coninue installing
I think it was 2gb anything smaller wont enable the android app store or something like that
i got this E: Couldn't find package nitdroid-installer
i post it over ther no help... :(

I would like to preload stuff before i have my microsdhc card, is that possible? ofcourse i need to run the installer again and verify the downloaded files when i have the card plugged in.
Can't wait to test the android universum :D
btw. i installed multiboot and succesfully booted Maemo 2.6.28.10power37 without NITDroid installed yet so far so good.

ykho take this over to the nitdroid forums please, and check the log file installer creates in /home/user/MyDocs/.nitdroid
Installed using installer, worked fine :)
Allthough now when I boot to maemo default kernel is used instead of titan's power kernel (I had it installed before running the installer). What should I do to get power kernel back in business?

When i first booted it came up with,
Complete action using,

or

What does it mean?
ps. everything is working fine now.

im now removing nitdroid because i cant be without my overclock, and none of the solutions are working for me, wasted a good 2hours trying every solution i can find, wish i didnt update the thing now!
sorry to hear that leetut , oc working good on maemo via titan v40 and on nitroid too , i used fix by dj steve (link page 474 or 477 on overclock thread) . i had manual install nitroid and titsn v37 , used fix and all ok , made backup of boot and multiboot.d folders to be safe . used nitroid uninstaller and manual clean of phone using winscp . installed autoinstaller then replaced missing titan v40 items ftom multiboot.d , most important bit is fix i linked to on oc thread , before that was in same boat mate so reconsider and try the fix .
nitdroid uninstaller in my apps menu opens/closes but does nothing?
edit:
according to the xterm commands i entered,

hii, today i bought a new 2g memory card since that the 4g card didnt work,(bailing out problem).but still the same problem using the 2g card.I have tried to reboot but no way
Code:
apt-get install kernel-power-bootimg
cd /boot
mv zImage* multiboot/vmlinuz-2.6.28.10power40
cd /etc/multiboot.d
leafpad Maemo-2.6.28-power39.item
edit the item as below
Code:
ITEM_NAME="Maemo 2.6.28.10power40"
ITEM_KERNEL=2.6.28.10power40
ITEM_MODULES=ext3
reinstalled nitdroid to try this
but its not working, like every other fix ive tried
the above is already in the leafpad doc that opens?
so dont know what im supposed to do there!
still cant overclock
gonna remove it again and try
apt-get install kernel-power kernel-power-settings
Have you tried re-installing the power kernel?
apt-get install kernel-power kernel-power-settings
then reboot.
i have now,
kernel-power is already the newest version?
E; couldnt find package settings:confused:
still cant overclock:mad:
why oh why did i read the nitdroid-installer thread:rolleyes:
This is the solution that was posted on the NITDroid Forums to get kernel power and NITDroid working through Multi-Boot. It has worked fine with me
I needed this to work cause I use MobileHotSpot alot.
After a successful installation and boot up of NITDroid. You go back to Maemo.
Make sure Extras Devel is enabled
Re-install Power Kernel (This should install version 40):
apt-get install kernel-power kernel-power-settings
Then install the bootimg of Power Kernel:
apt-get install kernel-power-bootimg
Then use one of NITDroid debs to auto add Power Kernel as an option on the multi-boot list(This one of the things NITDroid auto-installer downloads):
dpkg -i /home/user/MyDocs/.nitdroid/multiboot-kernel-power_0.3_armel.deb
i have now,
kernel-power is already the newest version?
E; couldnt find package settings:confused:
still cant overclock:mad:
why oh why did i read the nitdroid-installer thread:rolleyes:
Try to re-install?
apt-get remove kernel-power
or
apt-get install --reinstall kernel-power
Then run "apt-get install kernel-power" again
I appreciate that you are having problems and do not want to join the NITDroid forum, but by posting here you are taking this thread way off topic.
This thread is a request for someone to create a GUI for the installer so options (such as OC etc) can be easily selected. With all these help requests here no develper is going to be able to get the required info and therefore we are less likely to get the app to make everything easier for everyone.
If you dont want to post on NITDroid (even though you can generally find your question already answered) at least start a new thread to keep this one clean.
Thanks.
removed kernel power settings via app mgr
reinstalled it
still not working for me tho bro, cheers anyway
edit:
this thread was the first i found that wasnt locked!
ill flash phone now and avoid all nitdroid threads in the future:mad:

Hey guys, I'm new here and I've been reading this thread. I would like to know if it's possible just to get an emulator of sorts just for the Android apps because that's the only reason I want to use Nitdroid for the neat apps which I'm glad to pay for honestly. I like the autoinstaller though. Don't have my N900 as yet but I doubt I would install Nitdroid until it's fully stable with no one having any problems or a stable emulator for just the Android games or some sort of application for just the android games. Thanks

the battery is full and the maemo loads fine.

Yes, it is.

exactly...i have been able to get the titan kernel to work and all to boot correctly now! yeah. but there is so much stuff on the thread, i cannot find where i read to OC the nitdroid kernel to make that run faster.
do you have the code and how/where to enter it, ie-back in maemo x-term, or is there a way i am supposed to do it when the nitdroid is up.

2010-08-22, 07:38
You must mount the Android partition on Maemo.
mount /dev/mmcblk1p2 /and
nano /and/system/etc/power.conf
It's described here:
http://forum.nitdroid.com/index.php?topic=92.0
You must edit the power.conf under /system/etc.
Different profiles are described here:
http://forum.nitdroid.com/index.php?topic=116.0
hint:
The unmount command didn't work for me, so I have to shoot down maemo and reboot to maemo. After that it was possible to boot NITDroid without errors while booting.
On this example it is described to edit the power.conf with nano,
but you can take your prefered texteditor
ceroberts75
2010-08-22, 08:13
easy...but question.
when you have changed the freqs with nano, how to you save and close the nano in order to get back to the standard xterm to unmount?

2010-08-22, 08:18
Sorry, I don't know. I have used the edit option in Midnight Commander.
Try this:

Reynaltott:
It might be possible to get an Android emulator if you have enough money and a team of developers. If not, you should just wait for Nitdroid -- it's getting pretty good but isn't ready to go yet.
ceroberts75:
I think the red blinking led is where things are right now and will be fixed. Someone said it was because they had charged their battery with an external charger. Maybe, I have too, but I think it will be taken care of soon, I hope.

lol...guess what...i read the manual with ctrl+g (lucky guess that ^=ctrl)
then the ending commands are:
ctrl+O (oh)
enter (to save and close nano)
then
unmount /and
done.

i fixed it.
i think there were some kernel issues. after reinstalling the kernels and fixing the power40 kernel, and then over-clocking the nitdroid kernel, all is working smooth. just closed down nitdroid after testing and now going back to maemo.
:)
Im still unable to sort out the blinking red led problem, ive tried all the solutions posted on the NITDroud forum, editing files and a kernel patch, which do work for a while but as soon as i replace the battery im back to the same blinking red led,
so if you use more than one battery with an external charger i think its just a case of waiting for the next update and hoping that fixes it,
@ geneven, if you do manage to fix this problem could you let me know please.
This is really starting to do my head in now :(

Ok guys, just to inform you, i just started making a gui for the current nitdroid installer (i am modding Jay-C's current installer, not writing one from scratch), and will be ready tomorrow:) (if i dont encounter any bizzare problems:confused:).

Excellent news!I was skimming over this just in case there was anything related to a gui and there was your little nugget!
You might want to consider heading over to the nitdroid forum if you need any info as its a lot more organised than this thread!
Guys,
Anyone found a solution to running nitdroid + mobilehotspot?
I tried following all the suggestions in this forum, but it's not working sadly.
If mobilehotspot isn't going to work, i'll have to part with nitdroid sadly... it's so fun to make my Friend here envy me. He has samsung galaxy i7500 crap with android 1.5 and I have 2.2 (:

there was a new installer today that was released....how do we know when the new update will be released for the NITDroid itself?
i redid the installation and it wiped my previous version. :/ have to reset. oh well..at least its free.
so my question is when there is a new installer, would that suggest to reinstall nitdroid again if you already have it installed as there is an update? or not?
I have a question, i get updates from NITDroid-Installer, that means there is an update for NITDROID????

Yeb, it's Installer Not new version of NITDroid. an old version is slow and unstable.

Yes and try to stay clean of the sandisk ones a few of them has issues and you will not be able to install NITdroid on them ;)
coolies, thanks... havent installed NITdroid for ages, might do it again soon.. :D
Do I get it right - this is NITDroid all-in-one app that will perform every step written by dj_steve here (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=58890)?
And another question. Does a newer version of the app in repo updates NITDroid itself?

Yes you're right, for now theres an autoinstaller but only as cli. You need to join this forum http://forum.nitdroid.com/ to get the latest installer and how to do it as far as i know, i dont think the new autoinstaller has been announced here. I get my info on the other forum ;)
It works like other apps, you opdate it through app mngr or fapman wich one you use :)

Could you re-post this once again? Maybe with green color this time?
You already got answered, you need to wait for the formatting to finnish.
It might be your sdcard that wont work or you're not patient enough?
If it's a sandisk card that might be the cause of the problem...
Try http://forum.nitdroid.com/ for more help, it's dedicated to NITdroid, bigger change to get it solved there than here ;)

Yes, I have had 2 brand new sd cards fail. 4GB Sandisk and an 8GB Kingston. But got NitDroid working with the installer on an old 1GB card taken out of an old mobile phone.

I have done 3 versions and i put them on the testing section of the nitdroid forum. I am curently working to make a better one :). Just to give you some info: The first version uses a progress bar and updates it only 4 times, which is boring (that version tested and works) . Version 2 fills the bar more smoothly and i also added more "update points" to the progress bar, but doest updates progress bar during download :(. And version 3, has the updates from the previous ones, and i added a progress bar to every file (i think there are 10) that is being downloaded during the auto-installer that updates during download and also shows download speed and eta ........ I am waiting testers to answer me if v2 and v3 work.

ok fine dude but giv me the solution for my question
@brokensmile - relax.
It can take a LONG time to format the card and install Android. I would suggest, if you can't wait for it to complete on its own, that you follow through the install script manually and do as many of the steps as you can on your desktop computer - it is running Linux right? Right?
All in all what is happening behind the scenes is a non-trivial procedure - depending on what your N900 has installed, maybe it works, maybe it doesn't.
You don't need us to tell you to try a different memory card, just try it.

Please do not make the font SO BIG or CHANGE COLOR like that. You won't get any more help by doing that. Infact, people will help you less.
btw, my 4GB MicroSD took less than 1minute to format both partitions. There is something wrong with your card or your current state of N900 imo.
ok fine dude but giv me the solution for my question
And to point out another thing... Do stop demanding things here on TMO and people will be more helpfull... If you choose a BUT in a sentence like you do above, you delete all stated before the BUT and therefore the first stated will have no meaning at all just the stated after the BUT. So in this case all thats left is a demand and nothing else;) Just a pointer for the future...

Guys, is there an easy uninstaller for NitDroid. Removing any multiboot on the N900 and anything else? I presume all of the install apart from the multiboot is on the sd card?
I have installed with the installer which worked perfectly.

There's a nitdroid-uninstaller script which is installed as part of the nitdroid-installer package. I've not run it, but it looks to uninstall everything from the Maemo filesystem. It doesn't appear to touch the SD card or the Android settings in MyDocs though.
I had the "bailing out" problem. In my experience, it is totally bs to say that one should hang on after getting that message. If the N900 turned off, how long should you hang on? Six weeks or so would do no good.
What I did to get it to work was back up and completely reflash. Then it worked, I restored everything and it was fine. But getting "bailing out" over and over (which I did at first) didn't help a bit.

My install hangs during the " Formatting /dev/mmcblklp2 (ext3) " stage. I left it during the night and woke 8hours later with no changes.

I was having the same problem: stuck on "formatting /dev/mmcblk1p2 (ext3)...."
I have a 4GB SD card (not sandisk).
Solution: Execute the manual installation up to step 4 (even if some step may fail), after step 4, type nitdroid and go through the automatic process, worked for me.

The menu button is mapped to the proximity sensor, so hold your finger over that (just below the front camera) for a second or two.

Problem with this is... some of the links shown on the manual install link, no longer exist... any ideas?
Edit: I found the files in the archives folder so can add that... but is there a reason they are archived? Like is there an updated version? The auto installer wont work with mine, it fails at the formatting ext3 stage.

Do you have Ubuntu or a virtual machine with Ubuntu?
Use this auto installer .It will work.
I have the same problem, it just gets stuck at formatting mmcblk1p2..
Installed it before just nicely, but now it won't go any further than that..
for those with the stuck problem (ext3 or something):
Hehe, I had just that problem and did not figure out how that code
for manual formatting were surposed to write, but after a lot of
writing, I figured that this were the way to go;
You need to write this first to ensure that the phone does not use
the memorycard;
umount /dev/mmcblk1p1
This means with all the spaces, exact that code and press enter.
Then write;
sfdisk -uM /dev/mmcblk1 << EOF
,<YOUR NUMBER IN MB>,C
,,L
,,
,,
EOF
Allso with all the spaces, and new line means pressing enter.
like this:
sfdisk -uM /dev/mmcblk1 << EOF (enter)
,6100,C (enter)
,,L (enter)
,, (enter)
,, (enter)
EOF (enter)
keep in mind that the number 6100 might not be the number
required for your memory card, since I have a 8 GB.
the numbers you can use is:
1, 100, 2100(4GB) , 6100 (8GB), 14100, 30100
and then it should run! :) It might take about 8-10 min to install
(I only figured out how to write the code allready provided
propperly, I do not take credit for anything)
hope that helps, and have a nice day!:D
I have tried "umount /dev/mmcblk1p1" several times but keep getting "cannot unmount /dev/mmcblk1p1: invalid argument" This is really frustrating. I bought a Nokia 8gb class 6 sd card thinking the Nitdroid auto intstaller will make my day, and I am am stuck
