I am having no luck loading Abiword on my 770. I have googled and found about 5 different .debs but they will not install, I keeping getting a message that it is an incompatible package. I did download the .deb for the the arm processor. Is there a trick that I should know? Do I have to use dpkg to install?

I also found a procedure to add an Abiword repository, which I did but I get an error message when I reload the repository lists. I also downloaded all of the files from repository, but they will not install.

Since there isn't root in the 770, is there a way for me to do an apt-get update (I have installed xterm) or install via dpkg?

I thought I would answer my own question.

There were three challenges to my question.

1- Becoming root so I can do a apt-get update and install Abiword.

2- Installing the packages.

3- Enter information into my document.

I found this article in the How tos http://maemo.org/community/wiki/howdoibecomeroot2/ and it worked well. The only problem I had was that the instructions told me to press the escape key. I did not know there was one, I later found that one of the keys on the left side of the 770 was an escape key.

I later found a package on this web page http://eko.one.pl/index.php?page=Nokia770_software that allows you to enter sudu gainroot in xterm.

After I did an apt-get update I was able to install Abiword. However, the document that I really needed would not open in Abiword. It was actually a word document, but I converted it to an Abiword document on one of my Linux boxes (PCLinuxOS), but it still would not open. For the time being I recreated that document as a spreadsheet so I can use Gnumeric. I am hoping that future versions of Abiword for the 770 will be able to open the document.

Hey, thanks for this -- I was wondering why I couldn't install Abiword myself!

Is root access all you need to gain access to more apps, or is this Hacker Edition firmware a better idea now that the N770 is a legacy product?

You shouldn't need root access - just add the repository http://www.abisource.com/downloads/apt distro: mistral component: user and it should show up in your available list. If you need root access and you're not trying to do something crazy (like ssh or development), then you're doing it wrong, find better instructions. AbiWord right now works better on 770 than N800/2007, so if that's the only factor in your mind (Which I'm sure it's not), stick with 2006. Just go to maemo.org and look at the apps with the install files - those are easy and work well. No need to make it more complicated than it is.
