View Full Version : just brought a 770, fine of 2hours then wifi goes blind
OS: 2006 lastest version
Wifi: D-link D624+ (802.11b)
got my 770 yesterday, power up and everything is fine. wifi continously working until 2 hours later, it drops the connection and my 770 never goes online again.
I lived in an apartment and when I first search for hot spots, about 10 available, and my own AP is the strongest.
after the connection drop, everytime I chose "select connection", the answer is "no connections available".
I tried to specific the SSID, channel and all the configuration, but still, the 770 keep connecting to the SSID I gave and response with "fail to connect".
I replug my D-link D624+, restart it, change channels, disable filtering and wep, nothing changed;
I reflash the OS2006 again, then flash it to OS2007 hacked version, then flash to OS3006 again, nothing changed, not even on thing changed;
at the same time, my laptop, my wii, working with the wifi router completely well. then I close down the laptop and wii, try the 770 alone, nothing changed;
I am a computer science guy and all the symptoms tell one thing: the hardware chip of the wifi went out.
is this really happenning? the wifi goes blind with 2 hours use? I mean, it's completely dead, not one response I tell ya...
maybe I'd have brought a psp for stable hardware....

I've used mine for an year before selling it, and always worked perfectly: My guess is a hardware fault, you'll have to get a refund or change the tablet, sorry...

Hardware fault is certainly a likelihood, but check the device in some other hotspots, especially ones with no or few competing signals. Too many access points in a small area can "confuse" the device. Doesn't hurt to eliminate that as a possibility.

If one of your neighbors has something recent like an 802.11n Airport Extreme and your tablet catches a wiff of its signal, your wifi is hosed until you're out of range.
I haven't setup a bugzilla account so I still haven't submitted this, but its a pretty big deal since it points people to defective hardware. (It sure tricked me, I sent my N800 away for over a month in repair).
Look into that before assuming its the wifi module.

Just to give a little more detail in case someone wants to submit it for me. If you run an Airport Extreme (802.11n) in WEP (aka Transitional Security Mode) or WPA your N800/770 will go completely blind to ALL wifi access points until you're either out of range or you switch your router over to WPA2 Security.
Annoys the crap out of me since I can't get my DS online anymore... but I use my N800 way more.
I'm going to submit the bug today, hopefully we'll get it in a following firmware update since I'm sure the new one is already in QA.
I duno if it's 802.11n but I went to university today, they got a big student wifi there but nothing "special" came up to my blind 770.
I opened my router's admin menu to check the wireless log, and I am pretty sure it was'nt my neibourgh's 802.11n's fault coz I didn't find any request conecction singal come out from my 770's mac number, which means, it's not only blind, but also dumb.
meh after reading all the problem posts here, I just feel like I brought a pda worse than anything I had before... this thing just doesn't build to be last......
I would imagine the wifi chip is somewhat embedded-
I have used and abused my 770 nonstop for a year and a half,
and its aluminum case has it's share of dents (it once bounced off concrete).
I love the thing,
but it is not for everyone.
If you are looking for a polished, faultless product,
the N770 ain't it.
What I have noticed about the hardware is that initially, when brand new, it seems a bit shaky, but after a few initial reboots, some installed apps, and a swap space set is set up, it becomes quite solid.
Since you just purchased a 770, did you buy it new?
If so, why didn't you buy the N800?

As for the OP, I'd suggest checking for errors in dmesg (you'll need to install xterm).
If dmesg appears clean, try installing wireless tools (sudo gainroot; apt-get install wireless-tools) then run "iwlist wlan0 scanning" and see what is output - you should get a list of available wireless networks. If nothing comes back, or you get an error, it probably is a hardware issue. :(

without wifi, any apt wouldn't work. however, I did find wireless tools on maemo.org with a source code package which has a full load of .h and .c files. how to install this thing without gcc and compiler available on my 770, and without wifi? thanks for the input tho, anyway if wireless tools in xterm will return a list of available wifi, why the GUI wifi manager wouldn't?
sigh, still can't believe the wifi chip can't survive a 2 hour run tho.

Ah yes, good point! :) Let me see if I can find a link for the deb - you should be able to get it onto the 770 either via MMC or USB, then "dpkg -i <deb filename>".
EDIT: Try this deb (http://repository.maemo.org/pool/maemo2.1/free/w/wireless-tools/wireless-tools_27+28pre14-1_armel.deb) for OS2006.

That I don't know, but if wireless-tools returns an error it might confirm a hardware problem whereas if wireless-tools returns a list of access points it might suggest a software bug. If nothing else it would provide one more data point.
Another place to discuss this issue would be the maemo developer (http://maemo.org/community/mailing-lists.html) mailing list as Kalle Valo (the Nokia WiFi developer) is very active here and could offer more insightful opinion.

I normally run "apt-get -d install wireless-tools" and it will list the repository, then I access the repository using a web browser (append "/dist" to URL) and drill down into the Packages file to find the full URL for the package.
In this case wireless-tools (on N800) is in the repository "http://repository.maemo.org bora/free" so I accessed http://repository.maemo.org/dists/bora/free/binary-armel/Packages, searched for wireless-tools and then enter the filename into the browser (http://repository.maemo.org/pool/bora/free/binary/libiw28_28-1.osso1_armel.deb).
There's probably an easier way but it works for me! :)
Note that "bora" is a synonym for maemo3.1.
thx a lot, and can you do me one more favor? I need the deb of becameroot to do sudo gainroot.

It should be downloaded from the repository "http://eko.one.pl mistral/user" but for some reason this site is redirecting incorrectly so I can't traverse it as I outlined above.
I've downloaded the package successfully to my N800 and uploaded it to my own web server here (http://nmacleod.com/nokia/becomeroot_0.1-2_armel.deb) - I don't think it's OS specific so should install OK on OS2006.

Actually, just came across bug #1106 (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1106) which states that iwlist may have problems finding all available access points (certainly the case on N800, possibly also 770?) in which case installing syslogd might be another option to extra more info from the GUI.
Unfortunately the maemo.org site has just disappeared off the air - as soon as I have the package links for syslogd I'll post 'em up...
alrite, the response of iwlist wlan0 scanning is "wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning." does this mean my 770 offically dead?

Isn't looking good... :( What output do you get when you run "iwconfig"? With no connection established, I get the following:

I think you need to install klogd then sysklogd.

I'm running out of suggestions... :(
Check syslog for anything useful and see if you can post to the mailing list to get the attention of Kalle as it may be interesting to get to the bottom of this, and perhaps get a fix if it is a software bug.
If it's a hardware fault and/or you don't have the time to debug this (which would be understandable) it may be necessary to take the 770 back for a replacement (assuming it's new) or send it away for repair (in which case you may want to debug the problem further as this could be the quickest solution rather than wait for a repair!)
both klogd and sysklogd lacks some sort of depencies. I hope I don't have to install the whole Scratchbox client on my 770.
alrite, thanks anyway... Now I feel like hitting the 770 couple times for a better chance to let the stoopid wifi chip come back :(
anyways, is there any solution to using usb or bluetooth via my pc to share part of it's interent on my 770? how to do that?

I doubt it's any consolation, but mine did the exact same thing. For a long time my WiFi worked more-or-less fine, except that it would freak out when there were a lot of networks in the area and would only get a link-local IP. More recently, though, it seems to have gagged its last. It scans for a network and says none are available. Then if I wait a few seconds it will scan again and find my network. When I go to connect, though, it tells me there was a connection failure. Then it scans again and says there are no networks. Rinse, repeat.
I might have really loved the Nokia 770 ... that is, if it weren't just such a crap product.
