http://repository.maemo.org/pool/maemo5.0/free/b/bzip2/bzip2_1.0.5-3+0m5_armel.deb

download it to mydocs and do dpkg -i bzip2_1.0.5-3+0m5_armel.deb.

That should install it for you.

check your catalogs. Make sure you have extras and extras-testing enabled. And run apt-get update with working internet connection.

Execute 'apt-get update' then 'apt-get install --reinstall bzip2' then try 'apt-get nitdroid-installer' again.

@frozenholmes:
Uninstall Wgames then:
apt-get -f install
reboot
Make sure all of your repositories (extras, extras-testing, extras-devel) are on then:
apt-get update
OR:
Look at a post of mine one or two pages back, I posted all dependencies you'll need.

Dude, sorry for saying that but if you cannot dpkg a file then you have a lot of things you need to learn.
Put the bzip2_1.0blablabla.deb in the root directory of your N900, i.e. in the folder where you see Sounds, Videos, Documents, etc.. then:
root
dpkg -i /home/user/MyDocs/bzip2_1.0.5-3+0m5_armel.deb
Your repositories are all correct, otherwise, apt-get update cannot complete.

Nokia-N900-42-11:~# cd /home/user/MyDocs bzip2 -d nitdroidarchivename.tar.bz2

you have two commands on one line here, a "cd" and a "bzip2". Only the cd did anything
so do them as two commands
cd /home/user/MyDocs
bzip2 -d nitdroidarchivename.tar.bz2
Its written as two line because you need to type two separate lines

Nokia-N900-42-11:/# mount /home /and
Nokia-N900-42-11:/# cd /and
Nokia-N900-42-11:/and# tar xvf /home/user/MyDocs/nitdroidarchivename.tar
tar: can't open '/home/user/MyDocs/nitdroidarchivename.tar': No such file or directory

the tar fails because you didnt do the bzip2 in a way that actually did anything.

Oh! and where people have been putting "nitdroidarchivename" you actually need to put the right name. It will be the name of the file you downloaded for the bzip2 and the same name without ".bz2" on the end for the tar command

its a while since I did this, but, yes the unknown operand doesnt look right!

Did you go straight through step 4 in the same xterm?

The error is only for the multiboot so it might be fixable! and might be fixed by step 5.

Do the first command in step 5 and see if you get a blank file in leafpad. If it is blank then that means more fixing is required!

Not certain at this point :(! depends what has actually been missed out due to the error you got. As far as Im aware the install should have no errors, but it may depend on what else you have installed of course. e.g. the "apt-get install nitdroid-installer" you did first should have worked cleanly.

Didi you have a look at any youtube videos? This one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q1biPWvKOE&feature=related covers install of 0.0.9. You should get similar output from each command i.e. some produce big long lists other produce no output at all.

ah! you need to chaneg the file you edited with leafpad. Change the

ITEM_KERNEL=2.6.28.NIT.06
to say

ITEM_KERNEL=2.6.28.NIT.07
(as this line is what tells multiboot which kernel to use)

may as well change the 06 to 07 in the line starting "ITEM_NAME" as well

Erm!
Iif you dont have a micro SD card installed, then it sounds like the error from the "dpkg -i /home/user/MyDocs/nitdroid-kernel-2.6.28-07_rc4_armel.deb" has caused bits to be miissed out.

You could try the
dpkg -i /home/user/MyDocs/nitdroid-kernel-2.6.28-07_rc4_armel.deb again.
Youll probably have to edit the file with leafpad again as per step 4. Problem is you may just get the same error as last time!

You sure you did everything as root?
Did the tar command produce any errors?

As it says "Android not found. MUST be mounted on '/and'" you need to do all of step 4 .well you can only do the bzip2 line once so skip that, but all other steps are required.

In this case you missed "mount /home /and", but just do all the steps, skipping the bzip2 line/

when i had problems with nitdroid i did the following steps

But you have to backup your data first>

1.if possible, uninstall nitdroid with the official uninstallation tutorial
2.format your mmc (32 GB) internal memory from pc
3.format your Memory card from pc
4.reflash the n900 fw with maemo Flasher (it may work with the pc suite also (i think both do the same.

i hope this helps you all instead of breaking your heads about thing like those.

Just give it 2 minutes to load up, it will be as silky smooth as Maemo I promise. Oh and BTW did you install SetCpu? You should install it, and set the limits to 250 805 as this really gives a boost to performance.

Thanks a tonne man this is a very great contribution, but I've got some questions about swap memory. Can you post what changes have you done in your default.prop? What memory/partition are you using for swap (internal partition/mmc)? Didn't you experience any side effects by activating swap?

I heavily messed up NITDroid and I had to reflash my device that day when I enabled it (was using N11).

You cant extend the "internal phone partition" you can however wipe everything and change its size by flashing the EMMC.

The things to flash are in the Custom EMMCs section (http://wiki.maemo.org/Nitdroid_easy_install_on_EMMC#Custom_EMMC.27s)of the wiki. How to flash EMMC is also in the wiki (http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware#Flashing_the_eMMC_in_ the_N900). just use the custom bin file

Hello all,
I've got a question, maybe it's a silly one, but I can't get a way to get this sorted.

I've installed the latest Nitdroid Gingerbread, working all fine with Multiboot. :)
Now I would like to overclock my N900 in Maemo.
I downloaded and installed the 'safe' power kernel from the extras-repository, it's 2.6.28-maemo42.
I also downloaded the power kernel settings thing from the repos.

Now...when I'm in X-terminal and I want to load the "ideal" settings, X-term says: "This kernel version 2.6.28-omap1 is not supported."

I rebooted several times. I have this idea that it's because all the things I installed for Nitdroid, but as I said i'm a noob at this things.

Pleasy tell me if it's possible to get the N900 overclocked in Maemo with Nitdroid installed and if so, how can I do this?
Thanx in advance. :)

Hm, I know it's illegal to talk about that in forums (or wherever part of the world we're at where it's legal or not). But only for the purpose of an "FYI", it's actually possible with the current version of NITDroid. How, you ask? Sorry about that. Not that I don't appreciate (not my intention), I'm just being careful since I saw a thread or two where someone tried to share something similar and "got a beating", so to speak. If there's consent from the folks here, then definitely I can share. :) Also I'm not from the US so whatever has worked from where I am right now may or may not be the same for others, and I may not have enough knowledge of what's allowed and not over there.

Yup I know how to use aircrack-ng as well as WEP and WPA/WPA2 cracking. :) There are quite some posts, discussions, and debates though about that being legal or not, etc. As such I was just being cautious. But going to that topic was not my intention and agenda in the first place (there are separate threads for those kinds of discussion). As mentioned in my initial response, my intention was just to say that "free Internet" is already possible in the current NITDroid version.

You guys talking things way above my head. No. I am not talking about cracking WEP or security code for free internet. Sorry if i misled anybody. I have no intention and plain NOT INTERESTED. Period.

I meant free internet are those have been legally recruited by tmobile, I am one, to help implement/test/IPv6 to the cellular system. For those are legally in, the pool has since closed, not more, again, maemo would provide free internet/free cellular if one turned the n900 into IPv6. However, android WAS not in, at least so far not publicly. I was so excited to see the hidden built-in IPv6 cellular and allow nitdroid to tap into the IPv6 cellular. Anyway, I am way too a newby to talk about it. Full details here (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=1048350#post1048350).

Before, when I am in nitdroid, and on the street, I would have to reboot into maemo to get online. Now, with the implementation of IPv6, there is hope that I would NOT need to reboot into maemo even I am on the street. That is what I meant. This IPv6 is a big step for android/nitdroid. I have NOT actively searched about it, but is a sweet surprise to me.

I've finally done it, full HTC Sense on my NITDroid, I'm in love with it!
<yes, I'm obsessed with sense :D>
The location and temperature are also working on the flipclock, a small moon icon also appears but I'm not connected to the internet on my N900, a nice cloud and sun-glow-like animation also starts once unlocking the phone.
Gotta love Sense :)

Nitdroid phone use today: It can receive incoming phone call. You can answer phone calls or missed phone calls. Missed phone calls are listed under missing calls. And that is all about it now. That is, people can call you to your n900 and everything functioned like a phone, except audio still work in progress.

I am ready to post instructions on how to get Sensed in N12 but I fear that I'll have to post a link to a paid app which got removed from the market (it's not Fancy Widget at all) so...is this possible?

hahahaha! I think that some members here do have some minimal skills about using google. :D
I tried to test itching-thumb but the phone froze. I don't know why. I think i did not put the right preferences.

Hello all,
I've got a question, maybe it's a silly one, but I can't get a way to get this sorted.

thats an old version. find the maemo48 version.

V47 is the most recent.
I tried it with that one, but the same problem.

Anyone else has an idea?

Hey fellas, a couple of questions before I try nitdroid:

-Do I need to buy a microsd card to use nitdroid?
-Can you call and connect to the internet?
-Will all my data be lost (so do I have to backup everything)
-Is there anything I should be aware of before I install?

thanks in advance, looking forward to use nitdroid

These questions have already been answered in this thread (except maybe the first one). But I will summarize:

-You do not need a microsd card, you can install it on the emmc instead.
-You can connect to the internet. Calls are a work in progress.
-Your data shouldn't be lost. However, if you mess up the install, you might need to reflash, which would destroy your data. Always back up whether you need to or not!
-Be aware that this is still very experimental and you will likely encounter some bugs. Don't install Nitdroid unless you can deal with such.

- enable Extras-devel

http://wiki.maemo.org/NITDroid_FAQ#Answers_and_fixes_to_some_FAQs:

No it asnwers them all, I can just fill you with links and caches from the WIKI with the answers till tomorrow. Even if it doesn't, how about using the search function located up there? You know people didn't just build that for fun. This is just stupid, I'm not going to argue anymore.

By following the next steps you should be able to get the full Sense theme in NITDroid:

Prerequisites:

NITDroid
A working network connection
FileManager to install the .apks for NITDroid (or similar) or use the terminal emulator to install the .apks (if you're familiar with adb)
https://rapidshare.com/files/1391344649/Sensible.zip

Dock:

Download the Sensible.zip file, I've put in it everything you shall need.
Unzip it tyour N900, you shall see 4 folders: SenseDock, SenseBkground, Launcherpro, Flipclock.
Boot NITDroid, open your file manager, go to Launcherpro and install LauncherPro Plus v0.8.6.apk
Hard click the camera key to return back to your homescreen, you should see a dialog prompting you to choose between launcher and launcher pro. Choose launcher pro and set it as default.
Slide the lockscreen button to get to the menu, tap preferences --> Appearance Settings --> Dock background --> Custom
Gallery 3D shall open, and you shall see thumbnail of the folder SenseDock, tap it, then select dock.
Go back to preferences, then tap on Dock Settings --> Number of docks, choose 1. Go back to preferences then tap Restart LauncherPro
Back to home, you shall see the HTC dock with some icons on it, pay attention to this. Hold down the left-most icon (keep tapping it) then tap on change shortcut then choose App Drawer.
Hold down the next icon --> change shortcut --> Applications --> Phone. Repeat this step for the next two icons.
Hold down the last icon --> change shortcut --> Activities --> LauncherPro --> Preferences
Now, the icons are neatly arranged accordingly, last step is to hold down the left-most icon again --> Change icon --> Custom icon. Gallery 3D shall open, select SenseDock --> icon. This shall hide the shortcut, repeat this step for all of the shortcuts on the dock.

Sense Clock:

Open your file manager, go to Flipclock folder, install every .apk there.
Back to homescreen, hold down an empty space in the homescreen --> Widgets --> Weather & Flip Clock.
You should be connected to the internet to start the download, should take a few seconds to finish.
Choose your location preferences, and auto update interval, Save.
Open the App menu --.> Weather & Toggle Widget --> Widget skin wizard --> Install market skins --> Install clock widget skin --> H7C Clock --> Install
Back to homescreen, voila!

Background:

Open your file manager, go to SenseBkground folder, hold down sense bkground.jpg and set it as a wallpaper.

It's just a Widget Engine, and an htc dock I've gimped.
I've already tried to port Sense UI 2.1 albeit not hard, but this demands the whole htc framework to be ported which is way above my skills.

I'm getting reboots all the time. Like whenever I use Gallery it reboots while looking for new pictures. When I use the onscreen keyboard in portrait mode it will either reload Android or reboot the phone. I'm using all regular kernels and stuff.

It is guaranteed to crash each time I let Gallery run for more than 10 seconds.

Edit:

I had been using my El Cheapo eBay battery (the one NOT recommended the the superb battery thread) and when I switched to my real battery all those reboot problems went away. So any other rebooters out there: it's worth a shot.

Hi!

I've installed nitdroid on the EMMC using a custom EMMC image (5 GB for apps) and it runs beautifully but I can't install apps (it says it's downloading but then no progress bar and error later)

after searching a bit, it seems it has something to do with the home folder, where Nitdroid is installed, needing chmodding but it isn't as easy as typing "chmod +rwx /home". So I'm a clueless noob...

Some enlightenment would be very aprecciated :)

OK guys i definately need help here. I got Nitdroid N12 working, but i cant get airplane mode off! ive tried everything;

1- Pin code on maemo has always been disabled, and tried enable and disable but still didnt work
2- from nitdroid, i entered the emulator and typed "su rr" but nothing, still didnt work
3-tried holding the on off key and disabling airplane mode to off, and it shows as off but i still get no signal and when i go to settings network, it shows airpplane mode as ON
4- also in maemo, mounted mmcblk0p2 and deleted everything on "and/data"

i dont get what is wrong cuz i seriusly have tried everything...

after i deleted everything in data, it took me back to the wizard when i restarted, and i did the same thing as before, set up my google account, etc. could that be the reason? help please!! i really want to get signal and sms working!

Hi again!

I sorted out my previous problem (being installed on EMMC, I chmodded the home folder recursively and then I could install apps) but now I have issues with superuser.

I canīt install setcpu: First, it was granted access by superuser, somehow, but it hung everytime you fiddled with settings.
After uninstalling it /deleting its config, I try again but superuser doesnīt allow access anymore.

Should I upgrade setcpu? Or is something related to folder permissions again?

PD: I have Nitdroid N12 UMay, kernel rc4

Cheers!

I've done some serious testing and benchmarks for NITDroid, and the best settings I could get to were 250 805 with the conservative governor. Tuning down the up threshold a bit, and activating ignore nice load are also recommended.

Hey guys, i need to know something but because i am in cyprus i cannot read previous pages because the internet is so problematic at the moment.

a few days ago a large explosion knocked out a powerplant and other building etc, its been causing hassle ever since!

i got n12 working beautifully on the emmc, infact when i go home im going to fresh install both maemo and android however my device on android has been pretty dam hot :(

I proceeded to install setcpu but havent used it much until today, where the readout is showing 1.125ghz on the clock...

I have pushed android very hard since installing it so im garanteed for that clock to have been hit if setcpu is accurate,

i see from the above post that someone else has this very high cpu so my question is, how many people have stupid clocks??

And does running my device with clocks like that do alot of harm? hell thats nearly double ghz right there, how my machine hasnt exploded yet is beneath me! anyone put my mind at ease? ive been playing drag racing the whole day at stupid clock!

cheers,
Cata

It all depends on your particular phone. Some are more stable at higher clock speeds than others. Mine, for instance, will crash often if it is above 1 GHz. Yours seems to handle those speeds better.

Hey ammyt,

init: untracked pid 425, exited

and this way it give 4 untracked pid and then the last message it displays is

exited 4 times, 4 minutes: rebooting in recovery mode

and then it takes me to the OS selection screen

also still this is for your reference, this is a screen shot of my .item file of leafpad after I installed N12, please let me know if this helps you, I will capture a video of what I am talkling about soon and adda link in my next post, so plz plz plz reply me if this screenshot is helpful for you or not for me to put up the video on web for you to understand better :( :)

I had that too...I waited about half a minute after it booted to launch the market (to let it settle down a bit), then used it in landscape mode (so it didn't have to launch the virtual keyboard), then installed ASTRO. If that doesn't help then I'm afraid I've run out of suggestions, except to maybe get someone to make you a preinstalled image with the CPU set back - I would, but my internet is too slow.

Actually there is another way to install .apks.
In maemo open Xterminal then copy the .apk to ./and/system/app
then reboot into NITDroid an you'll find that the .apk you've copied is installed, however this method doesn't work with most games but it does actually work with SetCPU

Why not having both hardware layouts on the same boot?
Anysoftkeyboard allows it.

Install http://code.google.com/p/softkeyboard/
then install the desired language packs (you can install more than one) from http://code.google.com/p/softkeyboard/downloads/list

Once you installed everything you will need to turn on the softkeyboard and deactivate the built-in android keyboard (settings->languages and keyboards). Once you done that activate the layouts from the anysoftkeyboard settings app and you can switch between them by clicking the blue arrow and space keys.

If you think you can understand it, have a look at the keyboard mapping config file in

I want to inform you that Alexey didn't receive a community N950 device and he is kinda angry with that. Some of his tweets prove it. I don't want to predict anything or blame him but I think that nitdroid's journey is probably over. I was supporting him, still doing it and I ll be doing it, but this is my opinion. I hope he will continue to make nitdroid better and prove that my words are false. He did a great job with nitdroid for our N900 and he didn't receive a free device which surely deserves. I hope this gonna change too.

Thank you again Alexey:)

Dude WTH? If you don't like it do not install it you dumb *bleep* *bleep* *bleeeeep*
Seriously, search a bit before you start spitting crap okay? If you feel uncomfortable and you think NITDroid doesn't meet your extraordinary royal standards then reflash your device and go find a tree to bump your head in.
Otherwise, ask nicely to get answers and use the "search the thread" located just at the top of this page.
For the heating problem, install SetCPU, then open it, tap autodetect speeds recomended, slide the max slider to 805, the min slider to 250, scaling conservative.
I can see that you're a new user, so play it gentle and play it cool, otherwise, you would turn up just like alfonso.bastos and die old and sick.

u made my day!!! thx

Hi santiago, I have the same problem with my keyboard.
My layout is Portuguese, so the up and down arrows are on the same keys as the left and right arrows [amongst lots of other changes].
Did you manage to solve your problem?
Can you give me a little help about changing the HW keyboard layout to match my device?
Thanks!

papa73 this means that nitdroid is developing and sound is achieved while in a call. this does not mean that the version is ready. it means that its still developing and they successfully managed to get sound working. when the update releases, they are gonna mention it in the first post :)

I think it would have been better to wait until the "sound in phone calls" version or patch was released before renaming the thread. You're bound to get lots of queries and raise false hopes otherwise.
