Hi people
I'd like to get some feedback on a Theme I'm currently working on for my newly acquired N900. I saw there already are Fallout themes and I did try them both, but even as good as they are, it wasn't what I was looking for. So I started my own.

Doing it using the Theme Maker under windows, which I lately heard isn't a good choise. But it works for me so far.

Anyway here are screens from my phone using it, to see the current progress. Let me know what you think!!!

UPDATE

Just unzip into your .documents and in x-terminal do


sudo gainroot
cp -r ~/MyDocs/.documents/opt/* /home/opt/usr/share/
Then you can switch to PIP-BOY n900 theme.

It's the only way I know how to install it before I figure out how to create a deb install. :/

CHANGELOG - "b" stands for "blue"

1.0.11b - Different default wallpapers. Added chat presence icons (online, away, busy, offline). Changes to Mediaplayer widget. Color setup for SMS conversations changed slightly to better fit the theme.

1.0.1b - Added 48x48 icons of battery for the statusmenu just to see how it works. I'll change all of the menu icons, now then I know how to do it.

1.0b Lets say this is the starting point. For my personal use I would stop here I guess.

it really is encouraging. although it's basically finished for my needs, I will continue to work on it to make it as complete as possible.

if any of you guys has an idea how to pack it and make it available I will gladly share what I have.

progress won't be fast though as my time is VERY limited.

Actully I'm aware of that post, but I do not really believe it's legit. An email can be sent by anyone. So I will just continue to promote the great Fallout universe until I'm told differently thru official channels.

Can I ask what are the icons on your desktop, top left where the clock usually is. Is that a wierd clock? Or is that part of your theme? Not complaining just trying to get my head round what it is and if it is a clock how do you tell the time? Is it the binary clock thing I saw floating round once?

Also about the legal problems that might happen? Think how many people read these forums, the N900 is a minority phone, hardly an iphone app is it?

2. It's still a good publicity for the game and for the creators

Anyway I like the theme a lot... what I believe would be an improvement would be custom icons for battery and so on in the top bar. Changing the colors would suffice imho...

the top row is for hours and reads converted values are 16 8 4 2 1
you just add togeter the "on" dots and voila there goes the hour.
bottom row is the same for minutes with additional 32.

But neither one of these other two themes are complete. Joppu's doesn't work with PR1.3's keyboard and I haven't tried the other one since it was released.

Sad really, because Joppu's theme looks pretty good.

Forgot to add that this theme looks very promising so far. If it gets uploaded to devel, I'll give it a try.

I can do stuff in photoshop and I'm kinda able to adapt, but my learning curve is really slow. First, I'm not that young anymore, second, I really don't have much time.:D

So If there is some easy way to put this on devel let me know. I'm using Thememaker on windows right now...

Something else that would be cool as boot video is a vault door opening... Then there would be nothing but white light behind the door or something like that.

I guess the easiest way to do that would be to make a custom Fallout 3 / New Vegas map with a vault door rigged as you want and then record it.

@ToJa92: That might indeed look good, but not really something that I would like. For a Fallout theme, cool. But I'm upto an fully functional PIP-BOY. So an initializing video is what I'd like. Seeing as I'm not good at making videos though, I'll just stick with the one I posted. after some tweaking of course.

In the meantime if someone wants to try it, I have uploaded the theme here. updated in post #1

I just noticed the outline on the volume slider is little shifted. I'll correct that later. Let me know how it works for you.

Look at pypackager for debs but I prefer py2deb but it only does source package for repos. If you want to do the icons as a seporate package look here (http://andrewblck.com/archives/189) at for instructions. The same basic instructions work on themes also. If needed I can package it for you.

I've seen the extra d4rk themes change these. The ultimate goal would be to get it all in the style of the pip boy with no full colour icons etc.

Does anyone know a way to produce a contact shortcut that has no icon to it? The idea would be to just have a list of names in a larger font that you could click the name to bring up the contact card.

The only other option would be to have all the contacts set so the avatar was a pipboy or girl icon.

Hey,
sadly not much progress done as I really lack the time for it ATM.
Only changes done from the previous upload are the sliders, which now work and show as intended at the begining and few really unnoticable minor changes.

I'll upload the new file tomorrow and will add it to the first post. So just watch for the edit over there.

Thanks for trying it out. Any other suggestions apart from the icons? Those are on the to do list and I'm already trying to setup all stuff as per Andrew's post above.

Current Contact Widgets can't do that you would need to write a new widget. As far as the Avatar yeah you can do that just change the icon under the icon theme. I can't remember which icon it is right now but not hard to find.

If I remember right you can edit it by hand to replace the images but no I don't think there is a easy way.

What I'm going to have a look at doing is finding my old Fallout and Fallout2 CD ROMS and pop them in, find the video files and just convert them to AVI :D

You can change the operator text with "custom operator name widget"

btw: I manage to ammend the contact and web shortcuts to be completely without the avatars/thumbnails....

Slight Update.

Managed to make a battery icon with the same colour theme along with the signal icon.

Oddly the 3g bit under the signal i've not touched but it seems to have cocked the icon up, The 3g bit was ok before when it was just the signal icon so not sure whats happened there will take a look when im at home and linked to my linux machine.

Currently doing this a bit backwards haha, Im emailing myself the images editing with ms paint then sending them back to my gmail account and saving on the phone. Then copying them to the usr/share/icons etc folder via the terminal. haha.

Post #1 updated with the most recent version.

Another few small changes and one bigger... the CONTACT/WEB shortcuts are now without avatar/thumbnails. The click-able area is still the same size though, but with careful arranging it's fine. I have an idea how to
prevent that and I'll try it later. So stay tuned.

@Sash: I'll have a look at that, but there are more pressing features on the list.

Tinukedaya could you post a screenshot of how your desktop looks?

Just installed the latest version and a few things dont seem to match up so wanted to check what it looks like yours.

For example I seem to have coloured blocks in the upper left beheind the clock and biozhard symbol but they dont seem to match up with whats in front (see screenshot). Also is it meant to have the different colours now at the top bar and on the media player widget etc? Quite good but its feels a bit too much like the Startrek OS to me rather than pipboy.

How are you editing those blocks of colour behind the clock etc what file or image effects that in the zip?

Tinukedaya ive attached the icons I edited for the battery and signal meter.

I basically used the ones I found in Hicolor/icons/scalable/hildon then edited the colours and placed them into the pip-boy folder under icons/scalable/hildon.

In your theme file it has scalable/hildon with size as 64 and it made it mess up. I edited the theme file so it said 26 for the size, which worked fine when I did just the signal thing but then messed up the signal thing when I did both.

Since you seem to know what your doing a lot more than me maybe you could use the icons ive made and slot them into your theme correctly?

I only started messing about with the theming stuff when I read this post the other day so maybe ive doing something slight wrong..

I own the n900 for only about one and a half month and I actually have no clue what I'm doing and I'm learning on the go. I only have a know-how on photoshop and I managed to get proper tools I can work with. The icons such as signal and battery are however not part of those tools, so in this area you already know more then I do.

Those icons are lower on my todo list, so I wasn't checking for that yet.

Nonetheless, I'll have a look at it.

Tinukedaya what tools are you using other than photoshop? Do you use the theme builder or are you doing to all my hand based on other theme folders?

I'm using the ThemeMaker 1.2.9.
as soon as I'm done with everything that can be done here, I guess I'm gonna jump into another theme and use that as template.

The problem with ThemeMaker is, that I'm only guessing which graphic belong to what. hehe. Right now I have problem with the MediaPlayer. When choosing between Music, Video etc. the 4 big icons have overlay, I have no clue from where it's taken. According to the template it should be the same as the clock, but obviously it's not.

btw: post #1 updated with version without the overlay and also the swipe to unlock is modified.

Tinukedaya great work on the contact shortcuts they looks great and exactly what I was after :D

I've got your version installed with icons I made and managed to fix that 3g icon problem. I was saving the zip to my phone then unziping to documents then copying to the usr/share folder but the opt folder in documents already had some 3g icons in there that didnt work so they were getting copied over.

Deleted the opt folder in documents and did it again and it worked fine.

btw: You're not using the shortcut BG I see, you don't like it? Should I do it differently?

Not sure I just copied the files over as normal and thats how the shortcut looked..

All I did was save the zip unzip it add my icons to the folder then copied to the usr/share.

Where is the BG set? At the moment I seem to have the grey background to the shortcut text area like a button but was thinking it would look better the dark blue or something.

Changed it now to about half way and much better thanks.

I had the opacity set to max so it was coming up grey then set it to 0 and it had no border or background. Finally set it to about half and looks great.

The 3G etc icons written in white I might try and alter these to the light blue as well. Maybe at the weekend from home when i've got access to better image editing programs.

Just having a look at the folders within the zip file, the background for that contacts shortcut does that come from an image within the themes\pip-boy_n900\images directory?

If so do you happen to know what image name needs to be added to change the background for the converations widget? As you can see mine is currently a grey gradient but would like it to get it like your BG for the other items with the light blue corners and darker blue centre.

Or is that something thats just generated from the Theme maker? (not had a chance to install and mess with that yet)

I believe that graphic comes from the widget alone. That won't be in the theme. And not really sure if it even CAN be part of the theme.

There are more widgets that I'd like to convert the graphic to, just didn't mess with that yet... Concentrating on the theme alone for now. So feel free to find out about that..

Right now, I have an update pending. Working on the battery and signal icons as we speak. Once finished will post it.

So...

this one took a while... I always forgot something which pop out on me as soon as I changed the theme.

#1 is updated now. Quite a few changes including battery and signal status icons plus some polishing.

@WildmanUK: I checked theme files on some other icon packs and mine was missing one line in the scalable part. Changing the size did not solved all problems... work as intended now and I like my new battery icons hehe.

Oh, I didn't count the "Close" as a desktop. And the is broken. So actually AFAIK there were only three working "desktops" always.

Are you doing your theme in Photoshop/Gimp or in a Vector format. If your using Vector then all it would take is editing some numbers in notepad ot update theme to green or any other color.

@Andrew: Photoshop. It's not too complicated either. It's just complete waste of time and effort ATM. Once I'm done with the blue one, I can do it, but until then, it just has to wait.

Never played the game but I've noticed pipboy themes on some devices have moving lines in the back is that what it does in the game. Anyone thought about a live wallpaper to do that?

yep, there is an scanlike effect on the pipboy in the game.
and yep. I did thought about live wallpaper. But I don't have flash installed on my machine right now, but I'm definitely planning give it a try.

That's the QBW widget for screen custom brightness adjustment (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=64191)made by dr_frost_dk. It also turns off the light sensor which automaticaly adujst brightness depending on ambient light. That gave me a hard time really. I just made the graphic template for it to suit this theme. I believe there are 3 different looks for this theme ATM included in the download.

Anyway, how do you like the last update?

Folks, I'm having a problem with installing the theme. When trying to copy the directories with the cp-r command, I get a "no such file or directory" error. When I try to copy them manually (via cutexplorer) I get a "copy failed". I'm at my wit's end. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Hey,
cp command can't find it. The command expects you to put the insides of the file into .documents

Are you sure you extracted it into the documents as it is? In the zip, there is opt directory included so the full path should read /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/opt/* or shorter ~/MyDocs/.documents/opt/*

Also bear in mind it's case sensitive. You can check if the path is correct in the explorer. As for the cuteexplorer I guess you don't have root access with it.

It worked! I had to copy each of the two folders separately in command line (dunno what I was doing wrong when I was trying to copy them together), and now everything's fine. Excellent theme Tinukedaya! One of the best ones out there for me.

Hey I dont know if its been mentioned to you before, but my clock when the minutes change sometimes the old number doesnt go away, so I get 456 all ontop of each other.

Just a question on the new version, to install do I just copy the new files over the same way and reapply the theme?

Yes, just copy the stuff over as you did before.

The 4 buttons ctuallt grew on me a little, even that I'm not using the 4th desktop.

I made a new set of wallpapers to test the look and I love it. Next version would have those as default. For now, just fetch them from those attachements if you want to try them.hopefuly the attachement system does not reduce quality...

@Farugah I get that same problem as well with the clock. Not sure what the prob is there. It only does it if you have something open save the conversations screen maximized. If you go back to the desktop view it clears correctly.

I thought at first it might have been something to do with Theme Customizer, as i had changed the default font and size when I first noticed it but since then have gone back the default fonts but still the same prob.

On another note I noticed in the Fallout Theme post someone else had made someone had themed the conversation page so it looked more like the pipboy. Would this be something you might think to add to the theme?

Hey, that looks good. I'm gonna try to figure that out. Not anything fast though. I'm on vacation now so no access to my desktop. Only on my n900.

Although I do have Easy Debian > GIMP installed. Touchscreen is no good for the graphics. Maybe I should think about BT keyb&mouse ... + TV out = workstation on the go :D I do love this "phone".

Anyway I'll do some research on it... I do want to change the calendar as well. But it looks like those are not part of the Thememaker template, so I need to find and change the pics directly. (if anyone knows more then I do, please share)

btw: Anyone tested the wallpapers? What do you think?

Hi i love your theme, nice work so far.

I changed the background of the lockslider to that please stand by. Now i just need a apropiate slider. I have no picture skills at all. Just can change formates and rezise but there ends my skills.
I think it would suit your theme well if you implement that so i thought i like her the background i used for the lock slide screen.
i used this file and just resised it and changed to png.

Hey. Nope, it's not finished yet, As I said already, the progress gonna be real slow as I'm doing this in my free time, which is really limited. In the first post though, there are instructions how to install this WIP. It's very much usable and I can sure use some feedback so just give it a try.

well, that's actually not a problem. it's intention. You can see it in the screenshot on the first post. Bottom center, that's how I like my contacts. I'm on vacation now, so I can't really do anything, but next week I'll make an separate fix for you.

Updated the flash wallpaper.

Reduced the number of scan lines and added in some frequency jitter.

I'm sorry I didnt really pay attention to the theme color and just wend off the green from the pip boy screen shots I was looking at. So now we have blue, green, amber and red screens for those who may be using 4 screens and wish to have a different color per screen.

The phone app keys are on the todo list. But I'll only ammend them to fit the other buttons in the theme. I'm not sure I want to implement the rusty worn look. I will think about it though.

Secondly, it will still take some time for an update. I do work on it, but it's really slow ..
Thirdly, I have a little problem I need some help with.

I cannot find, where the green color shown on the screenshot is defined. In my colors.css there is no such color?!? Any idea where it is hidden?
